Cant Get Rid Of Belly Bulge? Those words jump out when you go to the website of Relacore, claimed to be “Americas #1 Selling Belly Fat Pill.” It's claimed Relacore can “reduce stubborn stress-related belly fat.” Very impressive claims. So, does Relacore work? In this review, let's look at the ingrednts and research on Relacore and its ingredients. This review is on Relacore Extra, also called Maximum Strength. I'll also compare it to Relacore Ultimate Fat Burner troo. This review was created to help you cut through the hype and see if this supplement is right for you.
What Is Relacore?
Relacore is a weight loss product but but it's said to work differently than other supplements you've heard of. For example, they claim it will work specificlaly on belly fat. It's also stated on Relacore.com, the supplement is “designed to calm your stress, which reduces cortisol.” Research does indicate stress and elevated cortisol levels are linked to abdominal fat (belly fat).
So, in theory, if we could reduce cortisol, this might reduce belly fat. So, how does Relacore do this? As we will see below, the ingredients in the product are suppoosed to not only block cortisol but also ease stress and maybe alleviate depression.
Here's a video of the TV commercial which drives this message home:
Since cortisol goes up in times of stress and since cortisol can cause weigh gain and increase appetite, blocking cortisol may lead to weight loss – and maybe less bellly fat.
This is somewhat similar to another weight loss supplement called Relora.

Relacore Extra Other Ingredients
The Supplement Facts label also tells us these other ingredients are present also:
- Microcrystalline cellulose
- silica
- stearic acid
- croscarmellose sodium
- polyvinyl alcohol
- talc
- polyethylene glycol
- mica/titanium dioxide
- polysorbate 80
- FD&C Blue 1 Lake
- FD&C Yellow 5 Lake
- FD&C Red 40 Lake
These other ingredients make up the tablets and help the main ingredients mix well together. They don't play any roles in the benefits of Relacore Extra.
Relacore Extra Research
Clinical research on this supplement cannot be located. Neither the supplement's main website nor searching clinical databases reveal any studies on this product. This does not mean Relacore doesn't work. Rather, it means we need to look at its ingredients.
Let's do that next.
Relacore Extra Ingredients
I'm not convinced most people are lacking the vitamins in this supplement. Could some be “sub-clinical” deficient? Anything is possible but I doubt it. One vitamin however is worth mentioning -vitamin C.
Vitamin C
3 tablets of this supplement provide 1000 mg of vitamin C. Researchers in South Africa noticed a temporary drop cortisol levels in marathon runners who supplemented with 1500 mg of vitamin C for a week before they ran their race.
This cortisol lowering effect has also been seen in healthy people placed in stressful situations. In this investigation, 3000 mg of vitamin C was given to people 2 weeks before their stress event (public speaking) took place.
Vitamin C is often said to be a “stress vitamin.” Stress is said to deplete vitamin C levels. Since cortisol is a stress hormone, does this mean taking vitamin C can reduce cortisol levels? It’s an interesting idea but it doesn't seem to work. So far, research –what little is out there – finds vitamin C does not lower cortisol levels.
Relacore Extra Proprietary Blend
The proprietary blend used to be called “Relacortin” but this name seems to no longer be used. Three tablets of this supplement provide 240 mg of the proprietary blend.
While they do not tell us the actual amounts in the blend, we know the first ingredient (passion flower) makes up the most while the last ingredient in the blend (Phosphatidylserine) makes up the least.
Lets look at the ingredients in the blend.
Passion Flower
Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) has several lines of evidence touting its effects to reduce anxiety issues. Because passionflower is the first ingredient listed in the proprietary blend, I believe it is one of the key ingredients in Relacore. One thing to know about passion flower is it does not work instantly. It appears to take 1-2 months before it takes effect.
Magnolia
The extract of magnolia (Magnolia biondii) used in the supplement comes from the bark of the tree. That's good because the bark seems to be where many of the active ingredients are located. Some research has shown a combination of magnolia and phellodendron amurense are effective for weight loss. Here's a quick summary of those studies
- Researchers in 2006 conducted a study that showed women who took 750 mg of the magnolia / Phellodendron combination for 6 weeks lost weight.
- Researchers have also shown less cortisol and better mental outlook when they gave Magnolia and Phellodendron to women and men for 4 weeks.
It's worthwhile to note both these studies used a supplement called Relora. Both studies were also supported by the company which makes Relora too.
Here is a video when Relora was featured on the Dr. Oz Show. Relora is mentioned 11 minutes into this video:
See the Relora review for much more information.
Chinese Skullcap
The scientific name for this herb is Scutellaria baicalensis. Like magnolia and passionflower, Chinese skullcap may also have some anti-anxiety effects. Because of the lack of human weight loss/anxiety studies, I'd like to see more research.
I also saw one of Jillian Michaels's weight loss supplements containing Chinese skullcap too so check that review for more information.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is another name for the vitamin, niacin. The effects of niacinamide on belly fat and cortisol levels needs more research. Niacinamide is sometimes used to help arthritis. Since overweight people may have arthritis, is it possible this is the reason Relacore contains this ingredient?
In other words, people who are in less pain may be able to do more stuff – and feel better as a result of their greater mobility? Obviously, I‘m speculating but this makes some sense to me.
Niacinamide has become a very popular anti-aging supplement. In supplements, it's referred to as Niagen and Niacel. For more insights see these reviews:
Asian Ginseng
This is also called panax ginseng. I can’t find any good proof Asian ginseng helps reduce belly fat. As for lowering cortisol levels, one study showed it did not work.
Poria
Poria refers to poria mushrooms. It's scientific name is Sclerotium cocus. Mushrooms have many bioactive compounds. Evidence for poria lowering cortisol cannot be located. There is a lack of proof for belly fat loss too.
Poria mushrooms are different from Reishi mushrooms which have been very popular in supplements. See the Reishi mushroom review for much more info.
Jujube
Jujube -also called Ziziphus jujuba – refers to a tree which grows in different part of the world such as the US and Australia. No evidence for jujube reducing cortisol or helping weight loss or belly fat loss can be located.
Perilla
Perilla, also called Perilla frutescens is a flower that belongs to the mint family of plants. Researchers in Japan have noted the leaves of the plant have anti-anxiety effects. Lab rat research has noted perilla reduces fat cell growth. I think we need more human studies on perilla to better understand how effective it is.
Phosphatidylserine
We make phosphatidylserine. It's a part of our cells and takes part in how our cells talk to each other. There is not much phosphatidylserine in Relacore Extra because it's the last ingredient listed in the proprietary blend. Phosphatidylserine has been studied to see if it helps people with dementia.
Other researchers have noted a combination of omega 3 fats and phosphatidylserine helped depression in older adults.
Relacore Extra Active Ingredients
This supplement has many ingredients. I speculate if Relacore Extra works – lowers cortisol levels -then it the effect may be due mostly to these ingrdients
- vitamin C
- passion flower
- magnolia (and Phellodendron)
Recall from above magnolia and Phellodendron is found in another supplement called Relora. Of course, it's possible I am wrong and all the ingredients work in tandom together to produce a better effect.

Relacore Extra vs. Relacore Ultimate
Relacore Ultimate-also called Relacore Fat Burner – is another version of this supplement. How are these supplements different from each other? Here is a side-by-side comparison of each to help you decide:
Relacore Extra (3 tablets) | Relacore Fat Burner (2 capsules) |
Vitamin C 1000mg | Proprietary Blend 964 mg consisting of the following: |
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 15 mg | Citrus (fruit) Extract |
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 15mg | Coffee (bean) Extract |
Niacin 50mg | Guaraná (fruit) Extract |
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) 10 mg | Cola (seed) Extract |
Folate 400 mcg | Green Tea (leaf) Extract |
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) 10 mcg | Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) (whole plant) Powder |
Biotin 150 mcg | Fennel (seed) Powder |
Pantothenic acid 23 mg | Alpha-lipoic acid |
Calcium 33mg | |
Magnesium 100mg | |
Zinc 10mg | |
Proprietary Blend. 240 mg Blend of:
Passionflower (aerial parts) powder
Magnolia (bark) powder
Chinese skullcap extract (root)
Asian Ginseng (root) extract
Poria extract (sclerotium)
Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) (fruit) Extract
Perilla extract (leaf)
Phosphatidylserine |
So what's the difference? As I see it, the big difference between these is Relacore Fat Burner contains stimulants and -if I can inject my opinion here – trendy /untested weight loss ingredients. While they don't specifically tell us I believe the following:
- Citrus fruit extract probably refers to citrus Aurantium also known as bitter orange. It's a stimulant similar to ephedra.
- Coffee bean extract probably refers to green coffee bean. Green coffee bean needs better studies to know if it works. See the review of green coffee for more info.
- Kelp. Kelp contains iodine. Iodine helps us make thyroid hormone. Kelp may be used in supplements in an attempt to boost thyroid hormone and reverse hypothyroidism. It's debatable if it does this or not. See the black seed and thyroid review for more on this topic.
The ingredients tell us Relacore Ultimate Fat Burner is supposed to work differently. It's a fat burner supplement not a cortisol /anti-anxiety supplement. Do both supplements work better together? This is unknown. For those with heart and blood pressure problems, speak to your doctor before using stimulant containing supplements.
Does Relacore Help Depression?
If you read the comments you will see several people saying Relacore improved their mood, helping them feel better. While Relacore itself appears to have no depression research, some of its ingredients such as passionflower and Chinese skullcap do.
Might Passionflower and Chinese Skullcap be the anti-depression ingredients in Relacore? It's hard to say but, my guess is they may be.
Is Relacore: Anti-Aging?
On Relacore.com there is a page called Anti-Aging Phenomenon? This page of tries to link excess stress with heart disease, shorter telomeres and faster cellular aging. Too much stress is very harmful to or health. This is true. But without clinical proof, it's hard to know for sure if Relacore -itself- slows aging.
At the bottom of the page, they do list research to support the Relacore-anti-aging relationship:
- Research links stress to biological aging for the first time (this does not seem to be a study but a reference to something put out by the American Federation on Aging. I could not locate it).
It's worth noting none of this refers specifically to Relacore. Rather, the research only says stress can age us.
So, does Relacore reduce heart disease, lengthen telomeres or slow aging?
There is no proof either way.
Relacore Side Effects
In healthy people, I think Relacore is probably safe. I don't think most people would have any side effects. That said, here are a few things to consider. This list is not complete:
- Start with less than is recommended for the first week. this is to see how you respond
- Don't take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Stop taking all supplements -unless your doctor tells you otherwise – at least 2 weeks before having surgery
- Speak to your doctor/pharmacist if you take blood thinner medications.
- Speak to your doctor and pharmacist first if you take any medications
In theory, passionflower and magnolia may interact with sleep aids or medications/ supplements for depression.
Skullcap may interfere with supplements /meds which induce sleep. There may be an interaction with depression meds also.
Relacore has a lot of biotin. Tell your doctor you take biotin before having blood tests. Biotin supplements might interfere with some laboratory blood tests.
Doctors have reported the case of an overweight, 47-year-old woman who complained of dizziness, confusion and weakness. She had previously lost 30 pounds and was using several supplements. Relacore Extra Strength is mentioned but it's hard to pin down what the cause was due to all the supplements she was taking. She was also dehydrated as well.
In the comments below, several people have said Relacore helped them. For those who want to just try what may be its active ingredients, taking a look at just passionflower may be another option. Relora, another supplement may also be an option for those who prefer supplements with research.
Does Relacore Work?
Without proof – clinical studies – it's difficult to say although people below have said it helped them feel better. The good news is some of the ingredients in Relacore do have research showing they may lower cortisol and anxiety levels. Whether this leads to belly fat loss or weight loss though, is another thing. Hopefully, this Relacore review has helped you better understand if this supplement is right for you.
Any Comments or Questions?
Dee says
I took my first pill yesterday. When I went to urinate it was light green. The same color as the Relacore pills. That was scary. Has anyone experienced this?
Joe says
Dee, if you look in the comments, you will see Ellen, who in Jan 2015 also said Relacore made her urine turn green. I looked online for what might cause this but cant find much. My guess is that it may something used to color the pills. what that is I don’t know. I’d call them and ask. Another option is to ask your pharmacist. Since they know a lot about biochemistry, they may have an idea. If you find out, do let me know too.
susan bliznick says
can I take LivLean with relacore?
Joe says
Susan, I looked up LivLean. Its got a lot of ingredients but honestly I would not combine them. If Relacore is going to help, nothing else should be needed.
DD says
Lot’s of gas and soft bowel movements hot flash’s and ringing in my ear’s. I have read all the blogs. Can all of this be from this use of Relacore Extra? If I stop how long does it take to detox out of my body? Been using it for a month. Thank you.
Joe says
DD, I don’t know if Relacore is connected to your symptoms or not but why not stop for a few weeks and see if you feel better. Let me know what happens.
linda says
does relacore have caffeine in it,is there a cafferine free relacore,
Joe says
Linda, there was no caffeine in Relacore when I reviewed it. Has anyone seen caffeine in it?
autumn76 says
The commercial keeps repeating what causes fat build up and it is stress. That is why there are stress relieving ingredients in Relacore. I just started using it. I’m not jittery or anything. I must say it curbs my appetite better than Hoodia.
Joe says
Autumn, what causes most fat build up is eating more calories than we need. Stress eating can add to this so if relacore helps that, then I can see how it might help some people lose weight. I’m glad its helping your appetite.
Robin says
Unfortunately, the only way to lose body fat is by a reduction in calories, an increase in calories burned through activity, or a combination of both. All the products and programs that flood our t.v. screens and magazine pages are gimmicks.
What you do is google the term “basal metabolic calculator” to figure out the calories burned per day (these are the calories burned by just existing… respiration, heartbeat, digestion, etc). You then apply the Harris Benedict equation to factor in your approximate activity level for each day.
For instance if you are sedentary such as a desk job and no physical exercise you would multiply your basal metabolic rate by 1.2; if you were lightly active such as regularly climbing stairs, housework, walking the dog, standing on your feet for long periods, you would multiply by 1.35. The number you get is the amount of calories that you need to consume to maintain your current weight.
From here you deduct 20% from this number to come up with the amount of calories to consume to safely and most effectively lose BODY FAT (notice I didn’t say ‘lose weight’). So for instance if your maintain level is 2000 calories you multiply 2000 x 0.20 to get 400. Now subtract 400 from 2000 to get the number of calories not to be exceeded each day.
These 1600 calories need to be made up of about 40% lean protein (skinless chicken, unbreaded/battered whitefish, plain greek yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, etc), 30% healthy fats (avacado, coconut/olive oil, mixed nuts, salmon, omega-3s), and LOW-GLYCEMIC carbs such as vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and moderate amount of fruits. Make sure that EACH meal contains a combination of these foods.
All you need to do is read labels, (understand that calories listed on the labels is PER SERVING so make sure you find the serving amount) and calculate and WRITE DOWN your daily intake to keep track. All you need is a calculator, a notebook and a pen.
If you want to boost your metabolism a bit you can include green tea, and low calorie spicy foods like jalepenos to your diet. Consuming these things w/o calorie restriction will do nothing… absolutely nothing.
If you are significantly overweight just simply try to add some moderate exercise such as walking to your routine. Nothing strenuous but try to do it regularly. Even if you don’t but adhere to your calorie limits with the right foods and it will melt off. As you become leaner and closer to your goal weight is is important to increase the proportion of protein and up your exercise to include some moderate weight resistance to stimulate the central nervous system which tells the body that fat rather than muscle is to be burned.
As body fat lowers significantly the body will burn muscle just as fast as it would stored fat so it’s important to feed and stimulate the muscle groups at this point. Look for “core” bodyweight exercises such as lunges, squats, pushups, situps. There are a ton of great youTube videos that show how to properly do these types of routines tailored to both men and women of varying fitness levels. Just start today and you’ll drop fat like a stone.
Ellen Lloyd says
I purchased a package of Relacore a couple of weeks ago. I tried it for 2 days. One the morning of the 3rd day, I was awoken really early in the morning with rapid heart palpitations. They were so bad that I had to get up and take my BP medication in order to slow it down. That helped and I was able to go back to sleep for awhile longer. I skipped the Relacore that day. The same thing happened the next morning. I took my BP medication and the palpitations slowed down.
I decided to stop taking the Relacore after that.
Ever since I stopped taking it, I am no longer awakened with rapid heart palpitations. I noticed that the Relacore also made me dehydrated. My urine was practically green. I do not recommend this product and am glad that I stopped taking it after 2 days.
Karmin says
I just purchased Relacore Extra. I know I’m in need of weight loss. I am in Nursing school a lot of added stress. I’ve noticed I’ve gained 45 lbs 6 months and I’m only 5 feet tall so I have to do something. I do have anxiety about taking anything new. I’m always worried how it’s going to make me feel. What would a recommended dose be to start out? The box says take 3 in morning. I just wish I could overcome this anxiety I have with medication. I used not have a problem with it, but I guess now I do.
Joe says
Karmin, Because everybody is different, I always think its good to start something new with the least possible for the first week just to see how you feel and then slowly go to where they say. Good luck in Nursing school!
Pennie says
I stumbled upon this site while looking for sales on Relacore Extra. About 6 months ago, I began experiencing sudden and severe hot flashes, night sweets, sleep problems, energy loss, lack of focus and concentraction, memory issues… and the list goes on..
I just turned 45 and weigh 105 lbs. Blessed with great genetics, I have maintained a tone body, wrinkle free skin and healthy appearance. People still guess my age to be younger than 30……at least until 6 months ago. Now, my stomach and behind has lost all muscle tone and skin firmness is just gone. On my face and neck, wrinkles, ruddy, dull, sagging skin, baggy eyes, droopy eyelids. It is very depressing to see such drastic changes so quickly.
So you completely understand why I am being so descriptive, it is a hope that it may really help others going through menopause. I had a hysterectomy 7 years ago and still have my ovaries. I was also diagnosed perimenopausal in my late 30’s but was only experiencing night sweats and mood changes. I have never taken any perscribed medication for this problem.
30 days ago, I purchased and began Relacore Extra. As with any natural supplements, it takes time to build in your system to see full affects. The benefits to me, at this point, are great enough to continue. Here are the main ones:
More energy
Better concentration
Brighter Skin
No Hot Flashes
No Night Sweats
Improved Memory
Deeper Sleep
Flatter Stomach
Less Stomach Fat
Overall muscle tone
Decrease in celulite
Below are the issues I have seen little or no change in:
Baggy undereyes
Saggy eyelids
Muscle fatique
Wrinkles
Sagging butt
Skin firmness
If this only helps one person………. these sudden changes in a womans life can be horrifying and very scary. I welcome any comments.
Pennie says
I do want to clairify that I persued Relacore for relief in Menopause not weight loss. Although this is marketed as such, I have maintained my life long weight of 105-110 but I have increased protein and calorie intake.
Kari says
Hi! I was wondering if I could take relaxore extra with birth control. I’m not sure if it will stop the birth control from working or not. Just don’t wanna get pregnant haha.
Joe says
Kari, While I don’t think Relora would interfere with birth control pills, I’m not sure. Relora does have some herbs and herbs can have drug interactions. Why don’t you try this; show the ingredients to your pharmacist where you get your birth control pills and see if she/he know of any birth control interactions. Please do let me know what they say.
Susan Hare says
Yesterday was my last dose after taking Relacore for a little over three months. There were no changes in weight or mood. I experienced an increase in blood pressure, Tinnitus (chronic ringing in the ears, which became louder), pressure in my ears (like a balloon inflating and deflating) and red eyes. I’ll let you know if the symptoms subside or not as this may have been a coincidence or indication of some other problem.
Joe says
Susan, did the symptoms start as soon as you started taking Relacore?
mel says
has anyone lost hair from taking this
Sheila says
I just took one pill of Relacore maximum strength an hour ago while sitting and reading all the comments on here. When I stood up I felt weird like I had been drinking and a bit buzzed, Is that feeling natural? I took it on an empty stomach. I only took one pill. Does it make you sleepy? Maybe my body needs to get used to it.
Also, To Melissa. I take thyroid meds too and I have never had any side effects. The only thing I would do is to take the relacore and thyroid pills separate not together.
Joe says
Shelia, does the bottle say to take it with food or not? Im not sure but it may be better to take it with food. I think Relacore may make you sleepy. My guess is it may be the passion flower in Relacore that does this.
Sheila says
It says with or without food and to take three pills in the morning lol. I only took one and I’m sleepy I can’t imagine taking three and trying to stay awake. Would they still work if I took them at night?
Joe says
Shelia, Im sure any effects would be the same if taken at night. It sounds like taking them at night would be best since they make you tired. I’d stick to 1 for the time being to see if that sleepy effect keeps up.
Sheila says
Thank you for your help.
Joe says
You are very welcome 🙂
Sheila says
It says with or without food.
Melissa says
Hi ive been considering trying relacore. Im 120# but cant seem to lose my belly since i had my 2nd baby he is 2yrs old now and i get asked quite often if im pregnant or when im due. Gets kind of depressing. My question is would this be something for someone that only needs to lose a few pounds? Also would it be ok to take with thyroid meds?
Joe says
Melissa, to me Relacore looks more like an anti-depressant supplement than a weight loss supplement. I believe the idea behind the product is that if it can relieve depression, people wont feel the need to eat as much. Since depression can lead to weight gain, the idea sounds somewhat plausible, but without evidence on Relacore itself its hard to say. I’m not aware of anything that targets just belly fat.
Here is a review I wrote that covers some of the stuff that I feel has evidence, along with other stuff that may help too http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
Im not aware of any interactions with thyroid meds but as you know, a lot of things can effect that medication. Like everything else you eat and drink, I recommend separating Relacore from when you take your thyroid med by 1-2 hours just to make sure. you may also want to show relacore to your pharmacist and see what they think. your local pharmacy might also carry it so you can show it to her/him.
Have you been tracking what you eat with something like MyFitnessPal.com? have you been working out at all? I recommend that no matter what you do.
Emily says
I started taking Relacore today and became very ill!! Vomiting, severe stomach pains and severe diarrhea!! Was sick all day!! I’ll NEVER recommend this product to anyone!!
Joe says
Emily, so sorry to hear that. Did you take it with food or on an empty stomach? How many did you take?
Emily says
I took the 3 pills as the bottle stated and it also said it could be taken with or without food. I took it without food. I will never take it again!! I have never been so sick in my life!!
Joe says
Emily, thanks for getting back and again sorry that happened to you.
taivia says
Can I take relacore with garcina cambogio?
Joe says
Taivia, I dont recall seeing any studies that combined Relacore and Garcinia cambogia but that doesnt necessarily meant you cant. I suggest if you do this that you start with only 1 supplement for the first week and slowly add the second product. Also know that if Relacore really works, that garcinia cambogia may not be needed.
See my review of Garcinia cambogia for more info on this supplement.
Courtney says
Do you know if anyone has tried Relacore while taking corticosteroids like Prednisone? Prednisone is known for giving you belly fat because what it does to cortisol levels and hormones. It’s a terrible drug but I’ve had to take it for my ulcerative colitis to fight inflammation in my colon. Have you known anyone with success with this problem?
Joe says
Hi Courtney, I am not aware of anyone taking Relacore while they were also taking corticosteroids. If you find any information I hope you will let me know.
sam says
Joe, I was wondering if you have read anything or know if taking relacore will effect my birth control at all? I’m excited to try the supplement but want to make sure it’s not going to lessen my birth control hormones. Thank you.
Joe says
Sam, I really dont know. Sorry. I suggest you show the ingredients to your pharmacist and see what they have to say.If you do get an answer, please do let me know.
Michael Holliday says
Joe, curious I am one of those weird body people. I look like a stick figure, with the exception of my stomach. My question will the product attack any other part of my anatomy where I can’t afford to lose any weight from.
Joe says
Michael, I’m not aware of any supplement that will target just belly fat. You could try the product for a month but do also take before and after measures.
I have seen some evidence that strength training might help belly fat. How much though I’m not sure.
Sylvia says
I took relacore a few years back, did loose a lot of weight but it had gotten to the point of not eating anything at all in days. So I stopped taking it because of it.
