Updated November 4 2024. Keep the gray at bay. Delay the gray. These are phrases that describe PHYTO RE30, touted to be the first anti-grey hair treatment that brings back color to your hair. At the heart of this cosmetic is the RE30 peptide, which I'll discuss below. I was alerted to this anti-grey cosmetic by Pia who left a comment in my review of Hair Regenerers by Serovital. This PHYTO RE30 review will focus on research. There is NO fluff and NO hype. Is PHYTO RE30 a scam or does it really work? Here is the evidence. You decide.
How Does PHYTO RE30 Work
PHYTO RE 30 works two different ways, according to this YouTube video below:
- Produce melanin in hair.
- Stops graying process by hydrogen peroxide.
Both claims are pretty bold. Let's investigate the evidence.
What Does The Name Mean?
If I were to guess, the RE refers to reverse, as in reverse grey hair. As for number 30, I have no idea what that refers to. Maybe because each bottle will last only 30 days?
PHYTO RE 30 Research
PHYTO.com mentions these two clinical studies:
- Clinical test on 32 volunteers for 3 months
- Clinical test on 32 volunteers for 12 months
I also saw no before and after pictures on the PHYTO.com website either. If it worked so well, you'd think they would post pictures.
PHYTO RE 30 Ingredients
Each bottle of PHYTO RE30 contains these ingredients:
Water | Alcohol Denat | Glycerin |
Lecithin | Fragrance | Phenoxyethanol |
Panthenol | Pyridoxine HCL | Decyl Glucoside |
Chlorphenesin | Triethanolamine | Ethyl Ester of Hydrolyzed Silk |
Maltodextrin | Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20 | Tulipa Gesneriana Flower Extract |
Citric Acid | 1393A |
Read the table from left to right. This tells you which ingredients are present the most and least. For example, since water is the first ingredient, it makes up most of PHYTO RE30. The ingredient is called “1393A” last, so it makes up the least part of the product.
Next, let's break down the ingredients are and pay special attention to:
- How the ingredients relate to melanin production in hair
- Which of these might be the active ingredients in RE30
I'll leave out the first ingredient – water -because we all know what that is.
Denatured Alcohol
They call this alcohol denat on the PHYTO RE30 ingredients list. This is alcohol that has chemicals added to it to stop people from drinking it (think alcoholics). I doubt it has any effects on hair re-pigmentation.
Glycerin
Glycerol, also called glycerol, is used in cosmetics to prevent evaporation. It has no role in PHYTO RE 30s anti-grey effects.
Lecithin
Lecithin is a fatty substance found in cosmetics and even some supplements. Like alcohol and glycerin, it is a supporting ingredient. When RE30 is rubbed into the scalp, lecithin helps the other ingredients spread well.
Fragrance
The fragrance simply makes the product smell nice. They don't tell us what the ingredients in the fragrance are.
Phenoxyethanol
As you can see, ethanol (alcohol) is part of this name. The Environmental Working Group website tells us phenoxyethanol is used a preservative. It likely plays no role in restoring melanin to hair follicles.
Panthenol
This is another name for vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid. I often see B vitamins added to hair growth supplements. The Environmental Working Group website tells us panthenol may be used as a skin conditioner. In this case, it may help the scalp feel good after PHYTO RE30 is rubbed into the scalp.
Some researchers have noted taking pantothenic acid supplements can increase the growth phase of hair follicles. This tells us the vitamin plays a role in hair growth.
Pyridoxine HCL
Also called vitamin B6 and pyridoxine hydrochloride. This is another B vitamin found in hair skin and nails supplements. Like all vitamins, B6 does many things, including helping maintain strong hair.
Here's Pyrixoxine HCL on Amazon
Decyl Glucoside
The Environmental Working Group website describes decyl glucoside as a cleansing agent often used in shampoos, bubble baths, and body washes. It helps those products to make foam. It appears to have no role in follicle melanin production.
Chlorphenesin
Chlorphenesin has antibacterial properties and is likely used in cosmetics as a preservative. It has also been used as a muscle relaxant but not used much anymore. It appears to play no role in melanin production.
Triethanolamine
Triethanolamine (tri-ethyl-an-oh-la-mine) is an emulsifier so it helps the other ingredients mix well together. It may also be a foaming agent.
US patent number US4508706A describes how triethanolamine was involved in the process of increasing melanin production in skin and hair. Triethanolamine does not cause melanin production. Rather, it's a part of a process that might do this.
I don't believe triethanolamine plays any direct role in PHYTO RE30's effects. It's used to help the other ingredients mix together well.
Ethyl Ester of Hydrolyzed Silk
This is just a silk protein. It's used in cosmetics like shampoos and skin conditioners. It may add strength to hair but has no effect on melanin production.
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is a type of sugar and is often used as a food additive and sweetener. In cosmetics, it helps the other ingredients combine together well.
An article appearing in Cosmetic Business described a “tan accelerator” composed of maltodextrin and Mucuna pruriens seed extract. This combination formed a compound, called “Melactiva” which is in some tanning lotions.
This tan accelerator also contained acetyl hexapeptide-1 which is an ingredient in SeroVital Hair Regeneres, a product also touted to reverse gray hair.
Maltodextrin, by itself, probably has minimal- effects on stimulating melanocytes' melanin production.
As an aside, mucuna pruriens (also called velvet bean) is sometimes also used in testosterone supplements like Nugenix and weight loss supplements like QuickTrim.
PHYTO RE30 Video Review
Here's a video review I created to help you understand the research. The video summarizes the research on the active ingredient. If you watch the video first, it will make all the stuff in the next section easier to digest 🙂
Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20
I believe Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 is the key anti-grey ingredient in PHYTO RE30. Could this be the “Peptide RE30” that's said to be the active ingredient?
I think it might be.
There is a clinical study on Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 and the restoration of hair color. Let's break the study down so you can understand it better. This may get a bit technical so skip to the next section for the lowdown.
The Lucus Myer Cosmetics company published a clinical study that found Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 could increase melanin production by 39% in human melanin-producing cells (melanocytes).
Researchers also state Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 increased the transfer of melanosomes to keratinocytes by 50%. Melanosomes are little bundles of melanin. Keratinocytes are skin cells that make keratin, an important protein in hair, skin, and nails. This could lead to darker hair and skin.
These researchers also stated Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 reduced hydrogen peroxide by 30%. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generates free radicals. Too much hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles can cause hair to turn gray and white.
And if things couldn't get any better, the researchers also state after 7 days of use, the bulbs of hair follicles increased pigmentation by 35%. In other words, they started churning out darker-colored hair again.
Recap Study Results
Here are the cliff notes of the study:
- 39% improved melanin production in human melanocytes
- 50% improvement in melanosome transfer to keratinocytes
- 30% reduction in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
- 35% improvement in hair follicles melanin pigmentation
All this sounds great, but…
But, There's a Problem
There's a problem… The results tell us what happened when cells were exposed to Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20.
Humans are more complicated than cells sitting in a Petri dish.
Another possible problem: The researchers state, “catalase was decreased.” Catalase is the enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Reduced catalase levels are thought to cause hair to turn white.
However, they also said there were 30% lower levels of hydrogen peroxide. That doesn't compute. If catalase levels decreased, this would lead to higher hydrogen peroxide levels.
In other words, low catalase levels = more hydrogen peroxide. More hydrogen peroxide leads to more gray /white hair. So how did both catalase and hydrogen peroxide decrease? If catalase levels went down, this would be expected to cause higher hydrogen peroxide levels.
This doesn't make sense to me. If this is true, it may be other antioxidants in RE30 (like Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20) helped keep hydrogen peroxide levels low.
Now, let's look at the human part of this study.
The Human Part Of The Study
These same researchers also mention a 3-month investigation involving 15 men with prematurely gray hair. The men applied a 2% solution of Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 to their heads each day for 3 months. The researchers say this resulted in “a decrease in L Factor by 5.3.”
What the heck is “L factor?”
I have no idea. I searched for the answer and even consulted a former esthetician (my niece) but could not figure out what it is. If anyone knows, I'm all ears.
Regardless, L factor is irrelevant because the researchers did NOT state the men had darker hair color. That's the REAL test of Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 ability to improve melanin production.
Remember, the study lasted 3 months. That's long enough to see improvements in hair pigmentation.
Study Problems
I was not impressed with this study for the following reasons:
- All researchers are associated with Lucas Myer Cosmetics.
- The study is published as an abstract. Abstracts are summaries of research – not full research papers. Abstracts don't necessarily have to be peer-reviewed.
- The human part of the study only had 15 men. That's not much.
- The study only included men. What about women? How do we know Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-20 also works for women with gray hair?
Tulipa Gesneriana Flower Extract
Tulipa gesneriana is also known as the garden tulip. Like all plants, tulips have many extracts. What extract of tulips is in PHYTO RE30? I am not sure. The PHYTO company tells us tulip extract is used to strengthen hair from the roots.
Citric Acid
Citric acid, found in citrus fruits, is also called an alpha hydroxy acid. I'm not sure what role it plays in PHYTO RE30 although in cosmetics, it may be used to promote skin peeling. In theory, this might improve cell turnover, which might help the melanin re-pigment process. I'm speculating here of course.
1393A
I have no idea what the ingredient called “1393A “is. The company does not give any indication of what this stuff is. Searching online for “1393A” does not reveal anything about it.
What Is Greyverse?
Greyverse is an anti-gray product made by Lucus Myer Cosmetics. It's a combination of:
- Glycerin
- Water
- Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20 (PTP-20 / GrayVerse)
I believe Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20 may be the secret sauce in Re30. Known as Grayverse, this compound is though to reverse gray hair by stimulating melanin production.
It appears that PHYTO Re30 is the 1st finished product to contain GreyVerse (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20).
Who Makes PHYTO RE 30
PHYTO Botanical Power is the name of the company. The Better Business Bureau tells us the company address is 301 Cottontail Ln Somerset, NJ 08873-1132. This address corresponds to Barrett Distribution Centers. Barrett Distribution may be where PHYTO cosmetics are shipped from.
PHYTO BBB Rating
The Better Business Bureau did not have a rating for PHYTO Botanical Power when this review was updated.

How Much Does PHYTO RE 30 Cost?
A bottle of RE30 costs $58. Online, the price ranged from $40 to $60. A bottle will last you 1 month if you use it once per day. At $58/bottle, this comes to $696 per year.
Where To Buy PHYTO RE 30
RE 30 can be purchased directly from Phyto.com. Ulta Beauty has it too.
PHYTO RE30 Side Effects
I believe PHYTO RE30 is safe for most people. Here are a few things to consider when using this product.
- Start with less than recommended for the first week to see how you respond. Triethanolamine has been associated with skin irritation.
- Don't use it more than once per day.
- If you are pregnant or nursing, speak to your doctor first.
- Stop using the product at least 2 weeks before having surgery.
A dermatologist or esthetician may have additional insights.
PHYTO RE 30 FAQ
1 How Do You Use It?
Apply 8 sprays of RE30 to the head and massage into the roots. You can do this after shampooing or on dry hair. Do not rinse it off. Leave it on the scalp. Use once per day.
2 How Often Do You Use It?
PHYTO RE30 is to be used only once per day. Each bottle will last a month. Each bottle contains 1.69 fl. oz.
3 Does It Contain Sulfates?
The Phyto.com website tells us RE30 contains no sulfates, paraben, silicon, phthalates, petrochemicals, talc, or mineral oil. The product is also cruelty-free.
4 What's The Active Ingredient In PHYTO RE30?
I believe Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide 20 is the active ingredient. At least one published study on this substance shows it might reverse gray hair. See above for more on that investigation.
5 Does It Work Better With PHYTO Hair Vitamins?
The PHYTO company also makes a hair, skin, and nail supplement called PHYTO Phytophanere. The PHYTO Phytophanere supplement contains various foods providing a mixture of omega 3 and omega 6 fats along with vitamins A, B, C and E.
Does RE30 work better if you also take PHYTO Phytophanere? Your guess is as good as mine. There is no proof either way.
6. Can RE30 Be Used By Redheads?
Probably, but I'm not sure. Red hair contains pheomelanin, which looks slightly different from the darker melanin pigment we usually see in hair and skin. I am not sure if RE30 research involved redheads.
PHYTO RE30 vs. Hair Regeneres
Hair Regeneres by SeroVital is another anti-gray product that tries to restore hair to its natural color.
One big difference is the price. Hair Regeners cost more ($99/month). Also, Hair Regeneres is a two-product system – a serum and dietary supplement – and you have to purchase both. That's an advantage to PHYTO RE30, which costs less and is just one product.
Lesser Expensive Options
Both of these cost less than RE30 and have the advantage of working faster. On the downside, these options only mask gray/white hair. Neither product restores natural melanin production to hair, as RE30 is claimed to do.
Even though the Control GX Shampoo is marketed to men, women can use it too. The video below gave some good tips on how to use it:
My Suggestions
If you want to try PHYTO RE30, I suggest only purchasing for 1-3 months. This should be long enough to see if it's working. If you don't see any changes in 3 months, I don't think longer time periods will make a difference. If it works, let me know.
PHTO RE30. Pro and Con
Here's a quick summary of what I liked and didn't like about RE30
Pro | Con |
Company says research has been conducted | No before / after pictures posted on company website |
Company has been around many years | Full clinical studies on product cannot be located |
Product is cruelty-free | Company has a poor BBB rating |
Product is expensive | |
Active ingredient seems to have limited proof |
These are my opinions. Your thoughts may be different.
Does PHYTO RE30 Work?
If it really works, PHYTO RE30 would be a game-changer. But I'm not ready to call it that just yet. For now, I remain skeptical of PHYTO RE30. I am intrigued but I want to see better evidence -and before and after pictures -proving it provides the results they say.

Hello during lockdowns in 2020 I experimented on my grey hairs with Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20. I made myself a hair tonic with it… just to see for myself whether it would work…
However, i agree with the study issues using only men – for them it is so easy to apply! The instructions on Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-20 are to massage it into the scalp.. how can you reach your scalp if you have long hair or even medium hair- you can’t, not easily! Not without wasting a heck of a lot on the strands.. it’s very expensive an extract, to waste on the hair shaft rather than the follicles.. and who wants to shave their hair into an army style buzzcut simply to use the product, especially as you have to CONTINUE to use it – for ever.. it’s not a done deal.
So a nice idea, but really impractical if you have hair that is longer than a few cm’s. It’s now 2023 and I’ve noticed a lot of grey roots again – so am going to make myself an experimental hair mask to apply – rooting around in my ingredients stash now.. I’ll write an report about it on my blog.

Hi Joe, really happy I stumbled across your website, some amazing and very helpful information you provide here.
Wondering if you have any info on this product called Mayraki Restore Anti-gray Hair Color Restoring Treatment. Some good reviews and before and after pics
Joe Cannon says
Hi Rah, thanks so much. I took a look at the product. I don’t see anything that would make me think it reveres gray hair permanently. If it works my guess is it’s a type of hair dye. It does have an ingredient called Polygonum Multiflorum, also called Fo Ti. There has been some preliminary research – cell culture studies – showing it may help grow hair. But I have not seen anything showing it works on people though.
If you try Mayraki Restore, let me know what happens.

Only this one, probably because I started out receiving notifications on comments from this review from the beginning. I just asked a question about nutrient testing on another Supplement Clarity thread. I can’t find it now or remember where it was, and I did subscribe to notifications. If you received it, can you manually email me the link?
Joe Cannon says
Judy yes I saw your question about nutrient testing. I guess you did not get notified of that? Here is the link and I will email it to you too

Judy says
Probably not Joanne. One bottle should have lasted me a month, but I used two bottles in a little over a month. It wasn’t any easier to apply than the Phyto RE30, of which I still have an unused bottle. Unless I buzz cut my hair, it is too much trouble to apply.
I haven’t colored my hair in almost 6 months so at this point, I am leaning toward embracing the gray.
I’ll be following this thread though to see if any other results are posted.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, that might make a good t-shirt “embrace the gray” 🙂
Joe Cannon says
Judy, did you hear anything back from Bill after you posted your results on their website?
Judy says
I have not Joe. I’m curious if anyone else on this list is trying it. I did read some positive reviews on their website though.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, I will keep an eye out. I think you may have been one of the first to try it.

Bill, your email address tells me you work for the public relations office at Reviv Serums. Is this true? Nothing wrong with this. Just looking for transparency.
Bill Henderson says
Indeed, I work in Marketing and Press Relations for Reviv Serums. My apologies if that was not clear from my post. Thanks for keeping things transparent in our industry!
Joe Cannon says
Bill, thanks I appreciate you clarifying that. 🙂
Judy Leahy says
Thanks Joe. I would like to see Bill address the questions in your Darkenyl review and provide us with more evidence on its effectiveness and safety other than the two reviews on their website. Also, what are the time and cost investment before results can be expected?
I’m still using the PhytoRE30 on only certain areas of my hair in an effort to try to space it out longer and have a better idea of where I might see new growth of non-gray hair. Nothing so far, and I’ve been using it for more than a month.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, I really appreciate you sticking with the Phyto RE30 to help others figure out if it’s worth it for them.
Joanne says
Hey Judy,
Thought I would post this just to save you some time and money. I have used Phyto RE 30 on parts of hair for more than 4 months and it didn’t show any signs of grey hair prevention or reversing. Hopefully Darkenyl is a different story.
Bill Henderson says
Thanks for the great questions regarding RevivHair REV with Grey Hair Reverse, Judy. The cosmetic claims come primarily from double-blind clinical investigations on the raw materials. RevivHair REV has a great safety profile and has been stability tested, PET/Preservative Challenge Tested, and tested for by-products and impurities. It, of course, complies with FDA and California Safe Cosmetic Act regulations.
As someone who seems keenly interested in its efficacy, if you’re willing to be rigorous with daily application, and willing to give it several months of use and report your findings here on SupplementClarity.com, I’d be happy to see about getting you complimentary packages good for at least 60 days of application.
One 60 mL bottle should last between 37 to 75 days (about one to two dropper bulb squeezes, 0.8 mL to 1.6mL, once daily). The measurement does not need to be exact, and we recommend applying enough serum for good coverage. For some, this might mean using more product than the instructions specify.
We can also supply several different optional dispensers: I recommend the optional fine mist sprayer for even overall coverage, or we can also provide a treatment/lotion-style pump. If you’re interested in this, just email me at press relations “at” reviv serums dot com (I’m cloaking the email address from crawlers). Joe, if you’re interested as well please let me know!
Best,
Bill
Joe Cannon says
Bill, thanks for replying to Judy’s questions so fast. Question for you, is there any research I missed you think I should add to the review? Did I include that double-blind study you mentioned?

Thank you. I just sent you an email.

Roseann Zinke says
Joe, I haven’t used any of these products, but I see they allegedly increase melanin production. So, if you are a blond and used this, would your gray hair turn blond again (if it works)? Or does it just darken whatever hair color regardless of what color your hair was before turning gray in places. OK, maybe a dumb question.
And what effect does it have on skin?
Roseann
Joe Cannon says
Roseann, you ask some really good questions. I have no idea of the products – if they really worked -would restore hair to its original color (blond back to blond again for example). As for skin pigmentation, my guess is they probably would not have a systemic effect since they are being used locally, on the scalp. But, given the lack of good research on these products, that’s just a guess on my part. We can only hope somebody decides to take a look at these questions some day.
Roseann Zinke says
I’m sure you get totally frustrated by the lack of (or zero) studies and clinical trials of supplements like these that have multiple ingredients. Of course, supplement companies don’t want to do clinical trials on their products-they don’t have to, it’s expensive, and it probably could show that their supplements do nothing except make them money.
Personally, I don’t want the FDA controlling supplements. The less government interference, the better. EXCEPT, there should be a site where valid complaint forms are available for consumers to complain about unregulated products, like supplements.
So, I think YOUR SUPPLEMENTCLARITY.COM WEBSITE does the best job of giving customers unbiased, researched information so we can choose for ourselves.
But the lack of a lot of before and after pictures IS telling. If the product is so wonderful, I’d think they would show many Before/Afters. Even those can be really deceiving.
I notice Before/After pictures of weight loss products. (Some claims are absurd, like losing 50 lbs in a couple months-unless someone is full of edema and take diuretics in high doses besides). It is evident that the Before picture shows a person slouching over, whereas the After picture has that person standing straight up, back curved, head up, etc.).
I digress again.
In my opinion, Consumer Labs and SupplementClarity.com are my go-to’s for me before I buy, as well as reviews by verified buyers, like on Amazon. Thanks also for providing another website-is it “Natural Medicine.com”? Is there a fee?
I’ve wasted so much money on junk products, I’m ashamed. So, now, on a fixed income, I only want to buy products I need that have a higher chance of working; so that is why I read all of your information.
Thank you, Roseann
Joe Cannon says
Roseann, thanks for your kind words. I agree the lack of before/after pictures was something I noticed too. We can only hope this changes as the product becomes more mainstream. I recently heard there are other anti-gray products coming to market. I’m looking forward to seeing what their research is.
I’m honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as ConsumerLab. Both consumer lab and Natural Medicine are fee based. Both are very reliable sites. Consumerlab is less and speaks less “sciency” which will appeal to many people.
Don’t feel bad about purchasing things Roseann. The marketing for products is very good. Did you see my little video on buying tips and things to watch out for? Here is the link

After the terrible experience I had with Phyto , I am really scared to try any new product. Phyto wasn’t available in my country but I managed to get 10 bottles of Phyto re30 and used it everyday without missing even a single day for 6 months.
Result : I have very thick hair and I do not have hair fall but while using Phyto re 30 , I had a terrible hair loss which stopped when I stopped using the product.
I experienced a slight improvement in texture.
The grey hair are right where they were.
Unless a product is fully verified and tried I am not going to test it on me 🙁 . Learnt it the hard way.

Pia, I can understand your reluctance. I felt so bad when I learned about your hair loss. Hopefully you are seeing some regrowth now?
Steve says
Hey joe it’s Steve again. It’s now been 6 months that I’ve been using RE30. I’ve been noticing that some (only a few)of the white hairs, are growing in black now. Meaning that, the tip is white but the hair is growing out black from the follicle. The root is black again! What do you think this means?
Joe Cannon says
Steve, thanks for the update! I am glad you are starting to see some hair pigment improvements. You said its only a few hairs. While this could mean RE30 is working, since its only a few hairs, do you think it’s working enough for you? Is it a significant difference for you? What are your feelings?
Judy says
Joe, I’m going to try it again concentrating on the resistant areas and hopefully I can get enough of the product to those areas to see a difference. I just completed my second application of Hairprint and although I’m happy with the results, it doesn’t last any longer than traditional hair color, and the process to have it applied at my salon is expensive and time consuming.
I’m planning to use this at least 3 months. By then, I will start to have the regrowth of my roots from the Hairprint.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, thanks for the feedback on HairPrint. I was wondering how that compared to Phyto RE30. I’ll look forward to learning what happens after you try RE30 again. I will keep my fingers crossed. If you come across any other hair regimentation products, let me know. I’d love the opportunity to investigate them.
Steve says
Hey joe it’s me Steve again. Im still using the re 30 I haven’t seen any significant change. I just wanted to add I have done lots of research on the rt1640. it looks very promising. the main ingredient is minoxidil “In early testing of the researchers noticed the drug sometimes also restored hair color, suggesting it was rejuvenating the melanocytes”. And the other one is cyclosporine A
That is an immunosuppressant
Lot of recent study showing immune response linked to hair graying. If u visit their website RiverTown Therapeutics there some recent study out. very impressive results
But what I really want to ask you what do you thing of Darkenyl™ By givaudan.
They have some very impressive statements on there website and in the cosmetic industry kind of sound to good to be true !!!! Let me know.
Joe Cannon says
Hey Steve, good to hear from you again. Sorry to hear RE30 has not been working. That seems to be the consensus from others here as well. I looked up Darkenyl. From what I could gather from their website givaudan.com – they say Darkenyl “combines Taxifolin glucoside, a stabilised antioxidant, acting as a stimulator of stem cells proliferation and maintenance and N-acetyl-tyrosine, a precursor in melanin synthesis pathway.”
This tells us the key ingredients are
Taxifolin
N-acetyl tyrosine
Taxifolin is a plant nutrient called a flavonoid. It’s also called dihydroquercetin and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica)
Taxifolin is found in onions, oranges grapes and other foods. Taxifolin is an antioxidant and may have many other benefits. Most of the research I saw was preliminary – test tube and lab animal research.
Tyrosine is an amino acid. It is involved in melanin production.
The company said the product boosted stem cells and melanin production but I did not see any clinical proof for the Darkenyl itself (I may be wrong. if you saw evidence, let me know so I can take a look at it).
I’m not sure of the price of Darkenyl. Here are the two ingredients on Amazon:
N acetyl tyrosine
Taxifolin / Dihydroquercetin
Im not sure if these two compounds would be the same or different than Darkenyl. I mention them because those were the ingredients mentioned on the Givaudean website.
If you try Darkenyl, let me know what happens. Gray hair supplements are very interesting especially as I get older too 🙂
Feierfoks says
Hey,
i use phyto re30 since 7 months, without any result.
Where can i buy darkenyl? cant find anything on the internet.
Joe Cannon says
Feierfoks, Sorry to hear RE 30 didn’t help you. Ive tried looking into Darkenyl but could also not find where its sold. I see websites talking about it but so far none seem to tell where its sold. It may be its not yet available but Im sure that will change eventually. I really want to see the ingredients in Darkenyl so I can do a review on it.
Has anyone tried Darkenyl or know who sells it?
Dar says
Would you do a review about darkenyl, the product goes by the name S3D Colourback.
Joe Cannon says
Dar, I do want to review Darkenyl. The link you provided did not work. Can you email me the link which shows the ingredients?
Judy Leahy says
Joe,
Try this
https://www.givaudan.com/fragrances/active-beauty/products/darkenyl%E2%84%A2
I filled out the “contact” form for information and a sample request. I’ll share with you whatever I find out.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, thanks! So, its looking like Darkenyl is different than S3D® ColourBack. The ColorBack product contains Darkenyl. At first glance, what seems a bit odd to me is the page you mentioned says Darkenyl contains an antioxidant called Taxifolin glucoside. But, when I go to the S3D ColorBack PDF that Dar linked to, I see Darkenyl listed but don’t see Taxifolin glucoside as one of its ingredients.
I want to look at this next week more in depth. If anyone has some light to shed on this, share away. The more help, the better 🙂
Joe Cannon says
Hey Judy, I just posted the Darkenyl review http://supplementclarity.com/darkenyl-anti-gray-hair-review/
I want to thank you and everybody else here who kept giving me info on this product. 🙂
Roseann Zinke says
Wow, Steve said RE30 contains Cyclosporine A!! This is an immunosuppressant given after organ transplants. It has been shown to stimulate hair growth, but geez, who wants to use that on your body or hair??
Maybe it’s in small amounts, and maybe applying it to your hair doesn’t cause the side effects it causes if you get it internally, but…
oh well, we are all vain.
Roseann
Joe Cannon says
Roseann, yes I agree restoration of hair color at the risk of suppressing the immune system (from cyclosporine), which might raise the risk of caner, isn’t worth it. Ironically, there are some reports of chemotherapy restoring hair color like this guy: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4718576/No-dye-Cancer-patients-gray-hair-darkened-immune-drugs.html
Roseann Zinke says
Joe, I took Methotrexate for a few years for rheumatoid arthritis. I had to inject it intramuscularly. (Now it can be given subcutaneously. It can also be taken by mouth.). My dose was far less than what cancer patients are given, but it was enough to cause me to lose some hair for a while. Not that much though, and after a while I guess my hair adjusted to it and stopped falling out.
What I found interesting wasn’t that it changed any color in my hair, but it did change the texture. I used to have totally straight hair. No curl at all. Then my hair began to have a curl to it. If I let it air dry and put gel in it, it would be frizzy-curly.
I’ve not taken Methotrexate for a few years, but my hair remains kind of curly. (Not in the best way.)
I was an oncology RN for many years way back in prehistoric days. People who lost all their hair with chemo often found that the texture/waviness/ curliness/ and sometimes color changed when it grew back.
Joe Cannon says
Roseann, that is fascinating! I wonder what the mechanism behind the change in hair texture is? Im sure stuff like this is on the radar of cosmetic companies. I’m sure they’d love to find a kinder, gentler way duplicating the effects of methotrexate on hair texture.
Roseann Zinke says
The report about hair color change says these people got immunotherapy, Joe, not chemotherapy.
Joe Cannon says
Roseann, really! wow that got past my radar. Thanks for the tip Roseann 🙂
