Update 3/9/20. Leptigen is a weight loss supplement that contains an interesting ingredient called MeraTrim. Does Leptigen work? Does It have any side effects? Who makes Leptigen? These will be some of the questions I'll try to answer in this review. Leptigen is not the same thing as Lipothin which is another weight loss supplement. See the DietSpotLight Burn review for more information.
What Does The Name Mean?
The name Leptigen is interesting because it reminds me of “Leptin” a hormone, made inside fat cells that play a role in hunger. The idea behind the name is a subtle reference that it might influence leptin levels and in doing, curb appetite and promote weight loss.
That said evidence the Lepigen alters leptin levels could not be located.
Leptigen Research
On the FAQ page of Leptigen.com it's stated that:
“we referenced 284 published scientific studies to verify the claims that we make about the ingredients in Leptigen.”
Understand that while research exists on the ingredients of the supplement, that is not the same thing as research on the supplement itself. To best understand the supplement its necessary to look at its ingredients.
Let's do that next.
Leptigen Ingredients
Each capsule of Leptigen has these ingredients:
Decaffeinated green tea extract | 200 mg |
Chromium polynicotinate (Chromate) | 100 mcg (83% DV) |
Meratrim | 400 mg |
Caffeine | 75 mg |
The label lists these 2 ingredients as well:
- MeraTrim
- Green Select EGCG
See the Research Section below.
Other Ingredients
Leptigen also contains these “other ingredients”
- Gelatin
- Cellulose
- Silicon dioxide
- Magnesium stearate (vegetable source)
- Lecithin phospholipids
These other ingredients play no role in the effects or benefits of the supplement.
Chromium Polynicotinate
This is another name for chromium. It's a combination of chromium and niacin (a B vitamin). Supplements often contain chromium bonded to vitamins to increase absorption. Chromium has been used in weight loss supplements for many years, although most research shows it does not work. See the review of chromium and weight loss .
Chromium polynicotinate is sometimes found in weight loss supplements, likely due to a study from the 1990s noting that it helped women lose weight (woman taking chromium picolinate actually gained weight).
See the review of chromium polynicotinate for more information.
Leptigen uses a trademarked brand of chromium polynicotinate called “ChromeMate” made by a company called InterHealth Nutraceuticals (now part of Lonza company). To support its effects this study noted it helped people lose weight more than a placebo.
Leptigen contains 100 micrograms of ChromeMate which is more than the above study used, so that is good.
More good news is Chromate is not expensive
Caffeine
Many weight loss supplements contain caffeine. The idea is probably twofold:
1. caffeine appears to have a small fat burning effect
2. people who are more awake might burn more calories through doing more physical activity
Leptigen has 75 mg of caffeine per capsule. That's about what is in a cup of coffee.
Green Select EGCG
This is a trademarked version of green tea found in Leptigen. This form is supposed to be better absorbed than “regular” green tea. Another name for this ingredient is Green Select Phytosome. One study showing Green Select Phytosome helped people lose weight.
MeraTrim
MeraTrim is another ingredient in Leptigen. It's composed of two separate ingredients:
- Sphaeranthus indicus
- Garcinia mangostana
There is some weight loss research on MeraTrim.
The research notes that Meratrim works when people take 800 mg per day. I'll assume Leptigen has this amount but I'm not sure as I could not determine the amount from the label.
See the MeraTrim Review

Does Leptigen Work?
Leptigen has no clinical studies to know if it works or not. However, there are a few studies on Meratrim which is an ingredient as well as Green Select Phytosome.
Jenny Shapiro says
I’ve been on Leptigen for just under three months now and I am very happy with the product. I have lost almost 14 pounds and I definitely feel like the product has helped with my cravings and I really like the boost of energy I get from it in the morning.
I’ve also had a few different interactions with the company during these months and I have found them very nice to deal with. When I was in the trial period, I called and they extended my trial because I was out of town and didn’t get the package for an extra week. They also lowered my delivery frequency because during one of the months I didn’t take it as often as I should have and I had a lot left over at the end of the month.
I’ve read through a lot of the comments on this page and I am very surprised how many people feel like they got “scammed” through the Leptigen trial/free sample offer, so I went back to the page where I originally signed up, just to see, and everything looked the same as when I signed up. The language that described how the offer works is right in the middle of the page and you have to scroll right though it:
Terms and Conditions: Order a sample of Leptigen for just the cost of shipping and handling. You have no obligation to buy anything in the future as long as you cancel within 15 days. Otherwise you will be enrolled in our Leptigen Member Program, where we automatically send you a one-month supply of Leptigen in 15 days and every 30 days thereafter for just $89.95 plus $5.95 shipping and handling. To change shipping frequency, cancel or extend your trial, call 800-555-3951
Just below that, you put in your credit card info, and then immediately below that you have to put a check-mark in a box that says “I’ve read and understand the Terms and Conditions” before you can submit your order. Anyone who signs up for this offer but claims not to know how it works, or claims that they had no idea that it was something beyond the free sample either isn’t being honest or doesn’t pay attention to what’s in front of their face.
Sorry to rant but I have had a good experience with this company and I bet a lot of other people have too. You know how it is online — usually only the people who have bad experiences bother to write anything about it.
Sarah Jo says
I’m right there with you. I loved the product and the customer service. Frankly I believe the people who think they got “scammed” are probably the type of people that don’t actually read things over and understand what they’re getting into. User error right? Haha.
jennifer wilson says
I have been taking Leptigen for 1 week and have lost 4 pounds. You dont get the typical , crazy diet “feeling” with it such as rapid heartbeat or the shakes that I have noticed with other ones. A few nights, I noticed if I took the second dose after 1:00, that I had some difficulty falling asleep. But, I dont feel hungry when I take it and feel that it gives me a bit of an energy boost; not dramatic..
I called to cancel before even taking the free 1 month supply I received because it was too expensive after realizing that they were going to automatically charge me for a monthly order every month. When I did, they cut the price down to $39 per month; which isn’t bad since it seems to be working.
Jack Harris says
I’m thinking about trying this product because I have a friend who took a different product with Meratrim in it and she really did well with it. I’d take the same stuff, but her product had a LOT of caffeine in it and I think it would make me feel to jittery. I can handle a smaller amount, and Leptigen seems like it has about as much as a cup of coffee.
It gets pretty decent reviews on Amazon but the price there is higher ($109 vs $89) than through their automatic shipment program. I think I’ll try the sample offer and if I like it I’ll get it though the automatic shipping option. Wish me luck — I’ll chime in later if I have any updates.
Joe says
Hi Jack, here is Meritrim itself. It’s a lot less.
Jack Harris says
Joe, do you have any sort of impression about Meratrim yourself? I have done some research on it and I’ve found a couple of published scientific studies that have been done on real people, published in what appear to be solid scientific journals here in the US (versus journals that no one has ever heard of in India, etc.). There seems to be pretty good evidence that it works…
Thanks!
Joe says
Hi Jack, Ive probably seen the same studies you did. Here is my Meratrim review. Ive never tried it but from what Ive seen so far, studies showing it works have used 800 mg. I’d like to see a few more studies but what they have so far is interesting.
Jack Harris says
Thanks for all the info, Joe!
One last question for you sort of related to this — Meratrim is a branded ingredient, sold by a company in California. But it’s really just a combination of two different natural ingredients, one a flower extract and one a fruit extract, I think. In your experience can you do just as well as a consumer if you just look for generic products that contain the same ingredients?
My cousin is totally into supplements and he swears by something that he takes that has ‘Testofen’ in it, when really it’s just a branded version of fenugreek extract.
With these supplement ingredients, is there an advantage to buying the more expensive branded ones, are they often somehow higher quality, or is it just like aspirin, where the generic one is just as good?
Thanks again for all the great info!
Joe says
Hi Jack, yes I believe the same benefits would be obtained if someone got the ingredients that made up Meratrim. Testofen has been a a few products Ive looked at. Your right its just fenugreek. If you use the search box for “testofen” you can see the products that had it and the research.
Gael says
I just called to cancel within the 15 day trial period. The man was nice and did cancel but he did try to give me numerous ” special offers” if I stayed with it.
Just keep saying no. It went fine.
If he doesn’t really do it I’ll just call my credit card company.
Marta says
The worst sales people which they work for DietSpotlight what do you reckon they could sell?
Ignore this company and the product Leptigen, they do not know how to run a business, they sell a product which is not good for your body, side effects over the moon, if you care about your body DO NOT TAKE IT!
They don’t want to cancel your trial and they play the game of silent because they want the review from you, basically they go against your rights of cancellation, do not trust them!
NIGHTMARE!!!!!
Sabah says
Hi
I like the product and am planing to buy kindly may I know what is the source of the gelatin?
Thanks
SHERI says
This product and this company…Leptigen…is a scam. They rope you in with a “free” trial and then start charging your credit card monthly over $90. BS
Anya says
Omg. Im trying to get out of the trial. Ive been calling soo many times. They never pick up. What else can i do to stop them scamming? Its been hell
Joe says
Hi Anya, so sorry that is happening to you. Have you tried filing a complaint with the BBB? Here is the link to file a complaint:
https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/nature-of-complaint/
Cathryn says
Call your credit card company and block the ‘trial’ payments.
Nelly says
Just tell the bank to cancel that company or request a new card with a new number. That’s how I could stop a company doing the same to me.
Angela J says
If I’m going to buy something that leads to an auto-ship, I will purchase a pre-paid gift card. Like a Visa gift card that will cover the purchase amount. It will cost you like $5 to buy it – BUT… if you end up unhappy with the product, you dont have to worry about the hassle of cancelling, because the prepaid Visa card will be declined.
The company won’t ship the item to you because they can’t secure payment. They will e-mail you telling you that you need to update your payment info… ignore it. Last time, the company e-mailed me twice. I didn’t respond in any way and they didn’t contact me again after that.
Lauren says
It did seem to suppress my appetite, but I only wanted the free trial seeing as the product is around $100/month. The site subscribed me to Leptigen unknowingly through the use of shady business tactics when I signed up for the free trial. I called immediately to cancel my membership, which they agreed to do after a frustrating phone call, but this next month they still charged me again and sent me another bottle of it. Be careful when buying Leptigen.
Marta says
Hi I just wanted to say that it is working for me – I haven’t seen any weight loss yet, but it is certainly suppressing my appetite and I feel more energetic. No side effects. It’s a holiday season and I usually put on 5-7 kg during winter, but so far my weight was constant and most importantly I feel full much faster, so I have no fear of being at the Xmas table, and confident I won’t put up weight. Just wanted to counter balance so many negative comments and thank you all for being a supportive community and empowering me to take steps for my own health!
Nancy Hesler says
I had a severe allergic reaction to Leptigen- first a rash on my face and then severe itching all over.
I called and told them this – they said they would not send me any more and that they would
cancel my account. Obviously they didn’t do ANYTHING about this because today I got another
shipment of Leptigen. I will have to pursue this on the phone with them during the day.
I also hated that it made me jittery from the caffeine.
DO NOT ORDER THIS STUFF – it’s not worth the risk. They obviously won’t report that
anybody had an allergic reaction, because then nobody would order their product!!
Mel says
Is Leptogen available in any stores, or only on line?
Joe says
Hi Mel, I think at this time, it’s only sold online.
Evonne says
this was extremely helpful for me to decide whether or not I want to take this product
Cynthia says
I just placed an order for two bottles at cost of $147. I’m hoping to lose 15 lbs by February for my wedding. I’m starting back in the gym on Monday. Wish me luck!
Joe says
Hi Cynthia, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Let us know how Leptigen works for you.
Kim says
Please come back and let me know if it works I want to buy some!
Courtney G. says
I have been taking Leptigen since April. Now let me say first, I’ve tried almost EVERY weight loss pill that’s out there. Most are garbage. I’ve had SOME good results from Garcinia Cambogia (not the cheap Walmart or amazon versions) & Carralluma Fimbtiata (again, not cheap versions).
But honestly, my FAVORITE thus far has been Leptigen. I was surprised to read the negative comments above because I’ve had such amazing results. I’ve gone from 208 to 179 in about 6 months. Basically 5lbs a month. I have NOT exercised at all this entire time, although I KNOW I should for optimal results.
I have tried eating healthy portioned meals, & the biggest thing I’ve noticed is feeling full faster & no more night-time binges! I haven’t totally cut out the foods I enjoy eating, but I’ve been able to eat them in moderation, which I was never able to before. So for me, I LOVE Leptigen!!
And just so you know, if you call them after the initial trial to cancel, they (should) drop the price down to $38.95/month. At least that’s what they did for me, because I told them it was too expensive for me to continue using. So for $40/month, I’m happy about my results & plan to continue taking it! Hope this helps some people!
Tarin says
I’ve been taking it for about 2.5 months and I love it also. First diet pill with no jitters or headaches and my appetite has suppressed. I’ve lost 8 solid pounds.
Vicki Coward says
No racing heart or anything? I need to lose 20 lbs. I’m 5’2″ and 142 lbs.
Joe says
Hi Vicki, it does have some caffeine if you are sensitive to caffeine that might be something to consider. Leptigen is on Amazon and you can buy it from the company directly too.
Here is a list of other things that have research that might help too: http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
jen says
they have cafeine free too – they are sending me a sample since im sensitive to cafeine
Joe says
Hi Jen, I did not know that. I didn’t see it listed on their website. Thanks for letting me know.
Vicki Coward says
I forgot to ask where did you buy it?
CW561 says
They give you 15 day free trail and i got them on a promotion with an extra 15 day supply (AWESOME) and if you express how expensive the price is for you, they will drop the price. They have done this for me and my friend. I’m only two weeks in.. but do NOT feel gitters, anxiousness or nausea like i did with other products… hunger is suppressed and I get full faster and sleep like a baby at night… so far so good… Looking to lose 40 pds (crazy i even see those words in text, but its true.) I’m 5’6 and 170 … i work out 3-5 times a week… it truly is 80% what you eat and 20% working out. Cannot wait to shed these pounds!
Suzy says
This crap made me very ill vomiting and migraines
Minnie Senora says
I took Leptigen for about two weeks and noticed that I started losing bladder and bowel control. Mainly the bladder. The fluid flowed out in gushes and I had no control whatsoever. I mopped more floors and changed more clothes ever in my life. It was AWFUL. I decided it was working against my nerve signals that told my bladder and colon how to function. It’s not for someone with any kind of health issues.
Violet B. says
I found a Leptigen review in my school’s data base :
This is the link to the review:
http://expertratedreviews.com/leptigen-review-how-safe-and-effective-is-it/
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Joe says
Hi Violet. Honestly, I try not to comment on what others say on their websites. While they said they didn’t know who the maker was, I’ll mention that I pointed out the company in my review. I would agree that I think its overpriced, which is why I showed people what I believed was its active ingredient.
Any other questions, just ask 🙂
Audrey says
I have been taking the free sample for a week and have gained weight. Not impressed.
Lisa Ward says
I have been using Leptigen faithfully for over two weeks and haven’t notice any weight loss. No side effects have been experienced either. I spent $200 on two bottles on Amazon and feel like I am taking a placebo.
Sydney R says
I find your review interesting, simply because your label of ingredients differs from the label of ingredients on the sample bottle I received of Leptigen. According to my label the only ingredients are (not decaf) Green Tea Extract 200 mg; MeraTrim 400mg; ChromeMate100mcg; and natural caffeine 75mg.
And the “other ingredients” that are typically what the capsule itself is made of. No Avesil/Avisil or Ashwaganda Root. I’ve had the sample since August, so I wonder if they’ve made changes since the review or not providing full disclosure of the ingredients??
Joe says
Hi Sydney, that is interesting. Thanks. Sometimes companies do change formulas. I will take a look at my notes next week and compare to what they list now.
