Update 4/7/24. Does Viviscal help thinning hair grow thicker and stronger or is it a scam? Viviscal is one of the best-known hair growth supplements. And for good reason. There are several clinical studies on this dietary supplement. In this review, you will learn about the research on ViviScal to help you decide if it really works or not. In addition, I'll address the side effects some people are reporting. Does it really work? Let's see.
Viviscal Ingredients
According to the Supplement Facts label, 1 tablet of Viviscal Extra Strength has the following ingredients:
Ingredient | Amount per serving | Percent Daily Value |
---|---|---|
Total Carbohydrates | <1 g | <1% DV |
Vitamin C | 59 mg | 98% DV |
Niacinamide (Niacin) | 12 mg | 60% DV |
Biotin | 120 micrograms | 40% DV |
Iron | 10 mg | 56% DV |
Zinc | 11 mg | 73% DV |
AminoMar Marine Complex | 450 mg | N/A |
Horsetail Extract | 36.7 mg | N/A |
Millet Seed Extract | 7.5 mg | N/A |
No prescription is needed to buy Viviscal.
AminoMar Marine Complex
The AminoMar complex is said to be the main key ingredient. The AminoMar Marine Complex is composed of:
- Shark Powder (shark cartilage)
- Mollusk Powder (from Oysters)
What parts of sharks and mollusks are used in Viviscal, I can't say. But, these ingredients do come from “sustainable marine sources.”

I called the company that makes the supplement and was informed shark cartilage is part of the AminoMar complex. The name “AminoMar” complex is the name the company gives to the shark and mollusk powder combination.
Horsetail Extract
The scientific name for this is Equisetum arvense. While they don't tell us what extract of horsetail Viviscal contains, we are told it comes from the stem. What I can say is that when I searched the National Library of Medicine for “Horsetail and hair growth” and “Equisetum arvense and hair” no studies showed up.
Horsetail does appear to have some anti-inflammatory properties and I wonder if this might help “support” hair growth. I am speculating about this.
Millet Seed Extract
The scientific name for this is Sorghum bicolor. It's also called “broom corn,” a reference I believe comes from when this stuff was used to make brooms. The role it plays in human hair growth, I can't say.
Vitamin C
I located one study on vitamin C and hair growth. Technically this study was on a vitamin C-like compound called L ascorbic acid 2 phosphate. Basically, the compound caused the elongation of hair shafts in mice and also in isolated hair follicles in a test tube.
This is intriguing but as far as can be determined by this reporter, no study has shown that L ascorbic acid 2 phosphate caused hair growth in a human. What about vitamin C itself? Does vitamin C grow hair? Well, it does help us make collagen. Collagen is a protein in our hair. But, I could not find any direct proof for vitamin C supplements promoting hair growth.
Viviscal Before & After Proof

Watch on my Youtube channel if you prefer
Niacinamide
This is the type of niacin found in the product. My guess is niacinamide is used because it does not cause facial flushing and redness.
Some may have heard of an anti-aging supplement called nicotinamide riboside (NR). While NR is not in Viviscal, it does contain one of its building blocks – niacinamide.
See the nicotinamide riboside review for more on that supplement.
Biotin
Biotin, a B vitamin (sometimes called vitamin H) is found in many shampoos and other hair products. While a lack of biotin may lead to hair loss in some people, I'm not convinced that most of us are lacking in it because many foods provide it. Bacteria inside of us can make it too. Either way, while a lack of biotin might lead to hair loss, I'm not aware of any evidence that biotin supplements grow hair.
Iron and Zinc
Viviscal provides a good amount of both of these minerals and both of these minerals have been linked to hair loss. For more on this see this review of iron and hair loss and zinc and hair loss.
There is a Viviscal for Men but it does not have iron. I think this is wise because too much iron may not be healthy for men.
Other Ingredients
Viviscal also contains these “other ingredients” according to the product website:
- Microcrystalline cellulose
- Maltodextrin
- Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose
- Silicon dioxide
- Magnesium stearate
- Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
- Glycerol
- Artificial orange flavoring
- Modified starch
Ingredients are listed in order as they occur as they appear on the label. These ingredients don't play any role in the hair growth benefits of Viviscal.
ViviScal Research
Let’s review the Viviscal research next.
Pilot Study #1 (not published)
Study title. “A 10-week pilot consumer perception test to evaluate the overall acceptability of a viviscal oral supplement when used by females with self-perceived thinning hair.”
This study involved 40 women and lasted 40 weeks. Results indicate that Viviscal reduces hair loss by 46%.
Problems with this study. This investigation does not seem to be a published peer-reviewed study Also, it's said they started with 40 women, but only 16 completed the study. Why did so many drop out? This high dropout rate reduces the significance of the study.
Clinical Study #2
Researchers in Finland published what appears to be the very first published Viviscal clinical study. The investigation lasted 6 months and involved 40 young men. Half the people got ViviScal and half received a placebo (fish extract).
After 6 months, those taking Viviscal had a 38% increase in non-vellus hair (in other words hair that’s not “peach fuzz”). Those getting the placebo saw a 2% increase in non-vellus hair. That's pretty good.
Clinical Study #3
Study title. Treatment of Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis with Oral Viviscal® for 12 months.
This study appears to have been conducted in 1994.
Study problem. This does not seem to be a published, peer-reviewed study.
Clinical Study #4
Revista Brasileira de Medicina. 1997. Vol 53; No. 3; p 1-5. Pareira, Jose Marcos.
This study does not appear to be in English and can’t be located.

From what I could gather, researchers looked at 200 men with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). After 6 months of ViviScal treatment, 75.3% had decreased hair loss. 14.6% of men showed partial hair re-growth.
2012 Study
Researchers in the US conducted a small study of 10 women aged 21-75 years of age who had thinning hair. The women took either Viviscal (10 women in this group) or a placebo (5 women in this group) twice a day for 6 months.
After 6 months, those taking Viviscal showed significantly more hair growth compared to the placebo group, which showed more hair loss. Those taking Viviscal also reported more hair shine and skin improvements.
2015 Study
This investigation lasted 3 months and involved 60 women (21-65 years of age) who were either given Viviscal Extra Strength (2x per day) or a placebo. After 3 months of use, women who took Viviscal:
- Had more hair in the areas of their scalps measured
- Had less hair shedding
Women also reported they felt better also. It's possible they felt better because their new hair growth helped their confidence and outlook on life.
2016 Study
This investigation involved men with thinning hair. For 6 months, 60 men with thinning hair were given either a placebo or ViviScal. After 6 months, men taking the supplement were shown to have significant improvements in
- total hairs counted
- density of hairs
- more terminal hairs (terminal hairs are the thick hair on the head)
When researchers performed the “hair pull test' fewer hairs were removed. This appears to show ViviScal strengthened hair too.
See the video review of ViviScal for before and after pictures.

Viviscal vs. Viviscal Extra Strength
There are different types of Viviscal. When I called Viviscal, I was told that this mostly has to do with the number of Amino Mar complexes they have. Here are the differences between them:
- Viviscal Extra Strength: 450 mg
- Viviscal For Men: 450 mg
- Viviscal Professional: 475 mg
When I called the company, I was told the professional version (Viviscal Pro) was not to be sold to the public. it's only available through doctors or salons.
Viviscal For Men
I get a lot of questions about which hair growth supplements are best for men. Here are the ingredients in Viviscal Extra Strength vs. Viviscal For Men side by side:
Viviscal Extra Strength | Viviscal For Men |
---|---|
Total carbs <1g (<1%DVP | Total carbs <1 g (<1%DV) |
Vitamin C 59 mg (98%DV) | Vitamin C 30 mg (50% DV) |
Niacin 12 mg (60% DV) | Zinc 8 mg (53% DV) |
Biotin 120 mcg (40% DV) | N/A |
Iron 10 mg (56% DV) | N/A |
Zinc 11 mg (73% DV) | 8 mg (53% DV) |
Amino Mar Complex 450 mg | Amino Mar Complex 452.9 mg |
Horsetail 36.7 mg | Horsetail 24.5 mg |
Millet seed 7.5 mg | N/A |
Flaxseed extract 50 mg |
In the table above % DV = percent daily value. “N/A” = does not contain that nutrient.
As can be seen, both the men's and women's versions are very similar. They both have the same key ingredients. In fact, the Male version has a tad more of the Amino Mar Marine complex and Horsetail extract compared to Viviscal Extra Strength. Also, note that Millet Seed Extract has been replaced with Flaxseed Extract in the Men's version. I liked that the Men's version did not contain iron. Too much iron might not be good for men.
Bottom line: I believe men could take the women's version and have the same results as if they took the men's version. Since the men's version may be more expensive, this is something to consider.
Viviscal vs. The Competition
Let's now take a look at how the supplement stacks up to other popular hair growth supplements.
Viviscal vs. Nutrafol
Nutrafol is another very popular hair supplement. Like Viviscal, there is a version for men and women. Nutrafol is said to work by reducing inflammation and inhibiting a hormone called DHT. Nutrafol has more ingredients than Viviscal. Nutrafol does have 1 clinical study showing it might work. So which is better? It would be nice to see a head-to-head comparison of Nutrafol vs.

Viviscal. I won't hold my breath for that to happen anytime soon.
Watch this video: Nutrafol vs. Viviscal
Viviscal vs. Provillus
The Provillus website (Provillus.com) states that it is “Clinically Proven and FDA Approved.” And they are correct. It is. This is because Provillus is minoxidil (Rogaine), the hair growth drug we've all heard of. Provillus is not a supplement. Provillus is a 5% solution of minoxidil that's applied topically to the scalp. It's no different than any other kind of minoxidil you've seen.
In theory, Viviscal might work better with minoxidil. They both have studies showing they can help women and men. Fortunately, Rogaine (minoxidil) is available without a prescription and it's not too expensive.
Viviscal vs. Keranique
Keranique is touted as a hair growth system. There is Keranique shampoo, conditioner, Keranique Regrowth Treatment, and hair spray. The Keranique Regrowth Treatment contains “the only FDA-approved and clinically proven non-prescription ingredient to regrow hair and revitalize hair follicles.” It does – the ingredient is minoxidil (Rogaine). Keranique may be a fine product that can help support hair growth, but it's the minoxidil in it that regrows hair.
While there are no head-to-head studies comparing Viviscal to Keranique, in theory, they may work better together when combined with the minoxidil in Keranique's Regrowth Treatment serum.
Viviscal vs. Halo Beauty
Halo Beauty is a skin, nails, and hair supplement by YouTube star Tati Westbrook. Halo Beauty is a combination of various vitamins, herbs, and other compounds. While there is a little crossover between these two supplements (Halo Beauty has vitamin C and horsetail, too), it doesn't have the Amino Mar complex. So, how they stack up to each other is unknown.
Viviscal vs. Joyome
Joyome is an anti-wrinkle cream developed by the makers of Plexus Slim. As far as it can be determined, Joyome has no effects on hair growth or hair loss. As such, I don't think these products are comparable to each other. Here's my video review of Plexus Joyome:
Viviscal Side Effects
I believe Viviscal is safe for healthy people. Few side effects and adverse reactions have been reported. Here is a brief list of things to consider when taking this supplement. This list is not complete:
- Start with less than is recommended for the first week to see how you respond.
- Speak to your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Stop taking at least 2 weeks before having surgery.
- Show the supplement to your pharmacist if you take any prescription medications like blood thinners.
- Avoid this supplement if you are vegan.
- Speak to your doctor first if you are allergic to fish. Viviscal contains shark cartilage and mollusk powder.
- Viviscal has iron and vitamin C. Speak to your doctor if you have hemochromatosis (iron overload disease).
- There's no good proof that Viviscal causes liver damage. However, if you have liver disease, speak to your doctor first.
In “scientific study #1” summarized above, there is mention of a study participant getting headaches which caused the person to drop out of the study. In the Pdf file of this study – which you can view on the Viviscal website – they make reference to “Appendix V” which lists the reasons why people dropped out of the study. Unfortunately, Appendix V is not part of the Pdf file.
Viviscal And Sleep Problems
If you read the comments below, you'll notice several people reporting that Viviscal may cause insomnia. I saw no mention of insomnia in any of the Viviscal clinical studies so it's not known how common this is.
Horsetail does contain small amounts of nicotine. It's very little, but could this cause sleep problems? I can't say. For more on this topic, read the comments section below.
Does Viviscal Contain Mercury?
I called the company that makes this supplement – Church & Dwight Co. I was told that Viviscal does not contain mercury. The controversy over this involves shark cartilage powder. Previous research has noted that shark cartilage supplements may contain toxic mercury. But this doesn't mean Viviscal has mercury. When I called the Viviscal company, I was told their latest testing showed levels of mercury were 0.02 mg per kg, which is lower than the amount permitted by both US and EU standards.
I was also told the version of Viviscal sold on Amazon does not contain any mercury at all. It's at a zero level. This is because of the rules Amazon must follow when shipping internationally. Church and Dwight formulates a different version for Amazon that does not contain any shark cartilage, a source of mercury. Because the Amazon version does not contain shark cartilage, this means it also does not contain any mercury.
Does Viviscal Contain BMAA?
β-Methylamino-L-alanine, also known as BMAA, is a brain toxin that is produced by some types of bacteria (called cyanobacteria) and other microorganisms. BMAA has been implicated in the development of Parkinson's disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Because BMAA has been found in shellfish, this is of concern to some who use Viviviscal. Thankfully, this is not a problem. I called the Church & Dwight company and asked about the amount of BMAA in Viviscal. I was told Viviscal does not contain any BMAA.
Viviscal And Gaining Weight
Some people have also reported Viviscal has caused them to gain weight. None of the studies reported this side effect. I am not sure how common weight gain side effect is or if it might be a fluke? See the comments for more on this.
Who Makes Viviscal?
Viviscal is sold by Lifes2good (Lifes2Good.com), a company that markets many health and beauty products. While the global corporate office is located in Ireland, in the US, they can be found at 355 N Canal Street, Chicago, IL 60606. They also have an office in London.
Lifes2Good is part of a larger company called Church & Dwight Co., Inc, located in New Jersey. This organization has several familiar brands including OxyClean, Kaboom, Orajel, and even Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Church and Dwight is a publicly-traded company (stock symbol CHD).
I was told they are phasing out the Lifs2good name and just using Church & Dwight in the future.

The Lifes2good company has been in business since 1997 according to the Better Business Bureau. The BBB gave this company a rating of A+ when this review was updated. See the BBB file for updates and more information.
Church and Dwight has an D rating with the BBB. See the BBB file for updates and more information.
Contact Viviscal
According to the company website, customer support can be reached at 877-333-4581. The Better Business Bureau also provides this number: 312-454-6167. The address for Viviscal is 355 N Canal St, Chicago, IL 60606-1207. The product website states the supplement is made in Ireland.
Church and Dwight, which now owns Viviscal, is located at 500 Charles Ewing Blvd Princeton South Corporate Center Trenton, NJ 08628-3448. The phone number is 609-683-5900.
Finola Hughes And ViviScal
Previously, actress Finola Hughes has appeared in Viviscal ads. She is listed on the website as a spokesperson. I assume this means she’s a paid spokesperson.
Viviscal And Molly Sims
Actress, model, and author Molly Sims is also a spokesperson. She is listed as a 20-year user of Viviscal. Her story of how she started losing her hair in her 20s is on the product website. I assume she is a paid spokesperson.
Buy Viviscal
This supplement is VERY popular and can be purchased at a wide range of stores like Walgreens, Costco, BJs, Sam's Club, Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Ulta, and Target as well as on Amazon. Here is Viviscal on Amazon
Viviscal Cost
Viviscal extra strength costs $99 per bottle according to the supplement's website. There is also a scalp lotion which is $19.99 but it doesn't have the same ingredients as the pill– and there is no good proof that the scalp lotion helps re-grow hair. The same thing is true for Viviscal shampoo and other products.
My advice: stick with Viviscal tablets. Don't worry about the shampoo or scalp lotion.
Interestingly, the shampoo does not contain caffeine, which is part of Thicker Fuller Hair I reviewed previously.
Viviscal Elite
The Elite supplement contains an auto-ship program where they send you a 90-day supply every 3 months (90 days) so you don't run out. Shipping is free with the Elite program and some free gifts are included also. It looks like the Elite program is for combo products. There seems to be no proof the Elite program offers clinically proven advanges over the regular viviscal formula.

Other Hair Products
Several people have told me that they have gotten good results using a product called Toppik. This is not a hair growth supplement but rather a fine powder that binds to existing hair, making it look thicker and fuller. I have met people with thinning hair who have used this product, and they give it high marks.
The Church and Dwight Co. now owns Toppik (smart move if you ask me).
Does ViviScal Work?
Viviscal has various clinical studies to prove it grows thinning hair and/or slows hair loss. For the most part, the studies appear to be well done. In the testimonials below, several people have stated it does work. Based on the research and testimonials, this may be something worth trying.

I was gifted a 3-month supply of Viviscal Professional by my girlfriend back in July. Her dermatologist recommended it. I’m 31 and have a receding hairline. While I’m not completely sold on the product I did just order another month’s supply – and I’m an anti-supplement guy.
My girlfriend swears there’s a big difference. I’m not as convinced. Having said that; my hair has never felt this good. When I run my hands through my hair it feels extremely healthy. I’m a skeptic that’s coming around.
Its been two months almost i started taking viviscal tablets for men
I cant see the results infact my hair fall is same i just hope i see some good results after three months
Piyooo, I’m keeping my fingers crossed it works for you. Keep us updated
Hi. The reviews were a lot to read. I couldn’t read it all. You also can’t tell from the way things are described whether this product grows hair or simply stops hair from falling out. Does viviscal for men grow hair or not? If it does, how many months after you begin the regimen will you notice hair growth?
Does one need the extra strength or regular strength?
Before i spend money on this product, Just tell me if it works or not. Why are placebos ( sugar pill) even used in clinical tests anyway? The only time i think a sugar pill should be used is when its a psychological issue where doctors think your issues are in your mind. Please let me know. Thanks.
Hi Chi Chi, I very much understand. I often have a lot to say and it can seem complicated sometimes. And there are also a LOT of commments here as well (over 700 as I write this). Let me see if I can address your questions here
1. does Viviscal grow hair or stop hair from falling out? Im not sure. There are people in the comments who have said their hair was regrown. Others have said they saw no regrowth but just a slowing of hair loss. Becuase of this, I think this will vary from person to person. The Viviscal research does seem to show it helps hair growth. I covered the research in the review so you can see that for more insights.
2. extra strength vs regular strength. I personally dont think it matters. Extra strength has 450 mg (as does the mens version) and the professional version has 475 mg. Ive never seen a study comparing them to each other. Prices will likely vary so check local stores and online. Here’s all the Viviscal versions on Amazon.
3. does it work or not? I cant say. Some people here have said yes, very much so. Others have said it didnt work for them. I wish I could give you a firm yes or no but I cannot.
4. Placebos. Placebos are a very important part of research. They let scientists test the effectiveness of a treatment against a treatment that should not do anything. Placebos are used in many different types of studies -psychological and otherwise. Studies that do not include a placebo group are inferior to that’s that do in my opinion.
I hope that helps clear things up a little better Chi Chi.
My hair fell out by the half-trash basketfuls and, after 18 months of following the instructions below, the bald spot is filled in and my hair is as thick as it’s ever been! I think that products like this MAY have some small effect, but tn my opinion, the high cost isn’t worth the relatively insignificant result. I GOT MUCH BETTER SIGNIFICANT RESULTS BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:
1. Use only phosphate-free shampoo;
2. Employ a shower water filter (screws right on existing fixture);
3. Take microlingual instant dissolve biotin (Amazon.com) daily, along with a quality multivitamin (I use Youngevity Tangy Tangerine);
4. Use a boar bristle hairbrush (Amazon or beauty supply store);
5. Use minoxidil foam or liquid (the one formulated for men is stronger and I use it, but that’s up to you) without skipping a day (Walmart). It probably will cause mild scalp itching but that’s part of your hair regrowth process; and
6. Do not put stress on hair by pulling it back too tightly.
Forgot to list one important thing…if you’re 50 or more, take a digestive enzyme capsule (Youngevity has the best one…Amazon.com). This will enable your body to absorb the nutrients you take (see my list above). My hair is now thick and I am an older GRANDMA!!
Hi Gigi, thanks for taking the time to write what is working for you. What phosphate free shampoo do you use?
Any phosphate-free shampoo is fine (amazon.com). Note, however, that MY HAIR GREW BACK IN and is now as thick as it was ever before! Oh, and I prayed first of all.
Thanks Gigi, so glad it has helped you. Yes prayer always helps 🙂
I am currently taking a probiotic now would I still need to take a digestive enzyme?
Hi Kristina, can you tell us why you are taking a probiotic? Is it for hair growth? Has a doctor ever said you have low digestive enzymes or have trouble digesting food? While some people do report feeling better when they take them, other than that, Im not sure if you need the digestive enzymes.
I was given viviscal as a gift. I was extremely skeptical but I was also desperate. Since I turned 40 I’ve had problems with hair loss and thinning. Within 4 yrs time my hair had become noticeable thin threw out my bang and temples. My ponytail had lost half its girth, and every time I washed my hair I had hand fulls of breakage and hair loss.
I was given the shampoo, conditioner, elixir and pills. After the 1st use of the shampoo, conditioner and elixir, my hair looked fuller and thicker, but I still wasn’t convinced. I can get the same visual appearance with moose and a blow drier. What really sealed the deal for me what the fallowing day. When I washed my hair for the 1st time after started this process I had only lost 7 strains of hairs. I was shocked ! Normally my drain would be filled !
I know I sound like an infomercial, but it really works as far as strengthening hair and giving the appearance of thicker hair. As for growing new hair? I’ll have to get back to you since I just started. So far I’m impressed. Here’s to hoping it grows hair as well.
Hi Leticia, glad you are having good results so far with Viviscal. Let us know how it works for hair growth.
I am disgusted that this product contains shark cartilage. I called the hotline and asked where the sharks come from but the rep could not tell me. I would never exploit any animal especially for vanity. I am a animal rights activist and his really bothers me. It should not be legal. Human’s are killing everything off to distinction its absolutely sickening! Did you know Japan kills sharks just for their fins to make soup. VILE! I will take BIOTIN and L-LYSINE instead and use good shampoo and conditoner.
It has to be assumed that the “cartilage” in this product comes from shark fin which is mostly cartilage. Fishermen cut the fin off the living shark, then throw it back in the water. It should be illegal, and all products sold should be illegal. In the meantime, boycott any and all products containing this vile product. See pictures online of shark fins–criminal!
Doubt you’ll see this but it’s China and Vietnam that make Shark Fin Soup, not Japan. Watch the slander.
You’re correct. Japan trap and kill dolphins. Called the dolphin drive hunt or dolphin drive fishing.
Please help. My hair has always been my pride and joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it.
I just don’t know what to do. My hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair?
Hi Nathalie83, So sorry to hear this happened to you! The first thing I would do is make an appointment with a dermatologist. They know about hair. They can give you some good info about how bad this is and your options.
Right now monixidil is the only drug that has been approved to treat hair loss. It’s available over the counter and its the active ingredient in many “grow hair” formulas you may have heard of . The Cosco brand (“Kirkland”) of monixidil is usually least expensive here it is on amazon
You can try Viviscal too. From the people who have left comments here (over 700 of them so far as I write this), some are really happy with the results and others less so. So I cant say either way whether it will help or not. It cant hurt though.
Definitely see a dermatologist about this. If you have any other questions, just ask. And keep us updated on how you are doing too.
VivaScal has cartilage from shark fin in it. Don’t buy it! The fishermen cut the fins off the living sharks and throw them back. Stay away from anything containing shark unless you want to support this cruelty against living animals. Look at the pictures online and then make a decision.
Hi I’ve been reading all the information on viviscal and have one question. When one stops taking the pills does your hair fall out again? I was on rogain and after stopping it I lost all my hair again. So is it the same with the pills.
Hi Marie, as far as Ive seen none of the viviscal studies have addressed what happened when you stop taking it. That said, I believe if its working for someone and they stop taking it, eventually hair would start to fall out again. Can anyone here confirm this for Marie?
Pretty sure that’s what happened to me. I took it for 6-9 months and saw tons of growth. I ran out of it and stopped using it for about a month. Within weeks my hair has been falling out in droves…. I’m so bummed!! I’ve ordered it again and I won’t stop using it this time. Lesson learned.
Melissa, thanks for confirming that. Sorry you had to go through all that after you stopped.
I can’t confirm but I think anything you take for hair loss once you stop your hair will revert back to it’s previous state. Rogaine is supposed to regrow hair and that regrown hair needs Rogaine as it’s lifeline.
In my experience, It’s only been 4 months but I don’t think Viviscal really regrows hair but it just helps support the hair you have which seems in line with studies, it helps stop shedding.
I used to have very thick hair and started losing it in the temple and top area, I think it had to be hormonal related because it started right around menopause, and some years later, I was diagnosed with hashimotos hypothyroid. In the beginning it was right in the middle front, a big chunk of hair just seemed to have disappeared, which really bothered me, then to the top and then temple areas.
So I started viviscal about 8-9 months ago, twice/day. I have to say that I think viviscal was instrumental in two things, one which seemed to stop hairless, and the second that my ‘bald spot’ in the middle front seemed to fill in somewhat so it is much less noticeable (at least to me).
But then two things happened, and I don’t know if they are related to the viviscal or not. One is that, without actually noticing hairless (e.g. in the shower), my temple area became much thinner, especially on the right side.
Second, that my bloodwork showed in urine sample some slight elevation in the results that made it look like a urinary tract infection. I went to the GYN who said I had a UTI and he put me on antibiotics. However, I later took another urine exam and the results are the same if not slightly worse. Again, I don’t know if any of the ingredients have suddenly caused this or not but I decided to go off the viviscal until I have some results or opinions.
I have been on thyroid meds, Thyroid-S, which is a natural pig-thyroid med from Thailand, since I had very adverse reaction from Synthroid. My TSH has always been off, but at least I feel better on this.
But perhaps I need to regulate my thyroid, and as well my hormones, I take progesterone cream periodically but not oestrogen.
I am so anti-doctor that I tend to self-medicate, which also could be a mistake.
So, it seems I am a bit hopeless.
Hi Ann, please dont be anti-doctor. I think your doctor is key to helping you regulate your thyroid hormone levels. I really think that will help your hair too. Keep us updated on how you are doing.
I want to know too, Stephanie, Which Vivical are you taking?
Are there any contraindications if used when on other meds? That would be my major concern. Thanks so much
Hi Nicki, Im not aware of any contraindications with meds but here’s what I’d suggest. If you take any meds, show the ingredients in Viviscal to your pharmacist and ask them what they think. If I remember glucosamine might have a mild blood thinner effect so, for those who take blood thinner drugs, that might be something I’d consider.
Let us know what your pharmacist says.
It works. It gave me acne really bad for the first three months and made me gain weight, also made my boobs go up a cup, so despite what they might day themselves it definitely does something to your hormones.
I don’t care, my skin settled after 6 months and I’m exercising to combat the weight, I’d rather have a weight issue than a bald one.
It has either slowed down my loss or awoken my resting hair, whatever it’s doing I’m a fan and it works.
I have several auto-immune diseases which are causing my THIRD bout of baldness. Not sure if Ill recover this time due to my age & rapidly failing health. Question: Do u know what is causing your hair loss? Do you have an auto-immune disease. Thank you, if u feel free to answer.
Laura, very sorry to hear about your health problems. What are the auto-immune problems you are dealing with?
I have been taking viviscal almost 1 year. It is difficult to determine if it alone is effective as I am using several different treatments. I had hair loss due to a traumatic horse accident and 2 surgeries and age is a factor also.
I am in my sixties and I have noted since taking viviscal my face starting breaking out frequently which have not experienced this in the past. Not sure which ingredient would trigger this side effect
Ruth, so sorry to hear about your horse accident and surgeries. Stress like that can cause hair loss. since you said the accident was traumatic, I wonder if PTSD might also play a role?
Has anyone else here broken out on the face after stopping Viviscal?
Thank you for the information on Viviscal. I have been researching it a bit and am glad to see your info compiled here as well as some user experience in the comments.
My one criticism of your article is the link you provide to purchase Viviscal Professional on Amazon online.
The beauty industry and the supplement industry are both rife with the problem of product diversion and knock-off items being sold as the real thing. This is a problem on Amazon. Professional or prescription only items found online are often past their use by date, or have sufffered a storage issue which has compromised them in some way, worse they have been stolen. Or you might get an actual fake product. I would love to see an article on this site specifically focused on diversion and how to safe guard consumers against this huge and growing issue.
Hi Ajp, thanks for sharing. While I’m sure there are knock offs of various products out there, I can say is that I’ve never become aware of any issues with Viviscal sold on Amazon. When checking stuff on Amazon I encourage people to look at the “verified purchases” and not just those that give 5 star or 1 star ratings. Look at the 3 star ratings too as these often give more than one sided points of view.
Ive tried minoxidil in pill form, it works but side effects were a burning scalp at night. Tried the topical minoxidil and it was good but facial growth started plus it’s difficult to style your hair after putting the drops in, also it dries your scalp out. So now these last 4 months Ive been on viviscal , no thickening of hair is evident however i have grown my fringe to my chin, first time in years i can tuck it behind my ears! I’m thrilled about this. And the rest of my hair has lengthened below my shoulders, also Ive had compliments that my hairs looking really good. I’m walking around with a lot more confidence. I’ll continue with viviscal as a simple pill is very easy to take ☺
Thanks for sharing Leighann, I’m glad viviscal is helping you.
Hi Joe,
I am happy i came across your page!
I have been using Viviscal for 2 years now and i find that it really hasnt change my hair much at all. i am quite dissapointed.
i contacted Viviscal customer care with a few questions…
Firstly i expressed my disappointment in the overall results after religiously taking the supplement for 2 years, twice per day.
They told me i need to visit a doctor to have my blood checked if i haven’t seen results by now.
i replied to them that my blood was fine and that i was a very healthy individual overall, i am just born with fine blond hair! And i asked perhaps it comes down to genetics ? And we cant change the genes we are born with? To this i had NO reply.
My second question to the Viviscal customer care people was : Who is the Scandinavian Professor that studied the Inuits ( in Greenland) in the 1980’s and succeeded in isolating some protein molecules of their fish and protein rich diet, after all it is from his findings and origins that Viviscal was created. Why is his name not mentioned anywhere ? Should they give credit where credit is due ?
Their answer :” In regards to the Scandinavian Professor, unfortunately, we are unable to disclose his name”
I found baffling, after all they are going to great length in their advertising to write about “The Scandinavian Professor” . its good marketing, to talk about a Professor, but does he really exist ?
Hi Agneta, thanks for sharing your experiences with Viviscal and I’m sorry it has not helped you. I also appreciate you sharing what happened when you called their customer support people. That is so interesting they didn’t disclose who the Scandinavian professor was.
I used to work at a vitamin store and we sold only the pink box for women. And many customers swore that it worked. Especially a woman in her 60s who lost all her hair to cancer/chemo. I honestly think for the price you might be best just buying biotin to help hair grow, horsetail (aka silica) to help strengthen hair and follicle. EFAs-essential fatty acids from fish or plant to help with shine and inflammation of follicle. And a shampoo and conditioner with biotin, rosemary and peppermint to stimulate scalp.
You can make your own as well with essential oils from your local vitamin store etc. just add to shampoo and conditioner or put few drop on head and massage in. You could probably have a 6 month supply for a quarter of the cost you would spend if you bought 6 months supply of viviscal. Avoid shampoos with SLS- sodium laureth sulfates. It’s an ingredient they use to degrease engines. It strips hair and skin of nutrients and healthy oils.
Really thank you
I have been using Viviscal for a month. I heard about it from a coworker. I was very skeptical but willing to try it. I’m 49 years old. My hair is very fine and has been thinning for years to the point of small balding spots. My two year old granddaughter has a fatter ponytail than me! I have noticed a dramatic change in my hair loss. I haven’t noticed any hair growth yet but even if I don’t get any, I’ll take the reduced hair loss (even though now I’m very optimistic on seeing hair growth).
Hi Linda, thanks for sharing that. I’m really happy you have had some success with Viviscal slowing your hair loss.
Hi Joe,
I have been having the problem of shedding/thinning hair for so long now & have tried many hair supplement pills. Some of them worked at the beginning and stopped; others didn’t work at all. I was tempted to use Viviscal as I am desperate but after reading someone’s review about having kidney stones due to the shark cartilage, I am now hesitant to use it. Any advice please?!
Hi Dalia, I know some people have mentioned it but I didn’t see kidney stones mentioned in any of the research. As such, I dont know how common it is. I think the risk is pretty low for what its worth. That said, if you try it, drink fluids (water) and eat more fruits and veggies which can lower the risk of them developing.
If you try Viviscal, let me know what happens with your hair – and any side effects you might notice.
Thank you Joe! I will give myself some time to think about Viviscal before trying it..Will keep you posted if I decide to take it 🙂
Has any one gained weight with this product? I noticed it was talked about in the study, lost 50 pounds in 3 years NOT trying to gain it back due to trying to help my thinning hair.
Over the last few years or so I’ve gone through a lot of stress; last year I became disabled and now am awaiting surgery; my appetite & diet are poor d/t prescription pain medication; about 6-9 months ago my hair started falling out; I turned 50yrs old;

I love your post Tamara! I needed that!!
Also, great article!
Thank you Tamara for your comment. Your comment just makes my mind stronger.
Not sure if I agree with your comment, “no medical reason for hair loss (alopecia). ” The following cause documented hair loss, some temporary, some possibly permanent: pregnancy, post -pregnancy, menopause, hypothyroidusm, ANY auto-immune disease – MS, Fibro, IC, MS, Lupus. And then thete is ALOPECIA AREATA & UNIVERSALIS, an auto-immune disease which specifically causes BALDNESS. Oh, I am an RN,BS.
That was a really nice review, thanks. Assuming the active ingredients are the shark cartilage, mollusc extract and horsetail extract, let me make the following points.
Leaving aside the science, the product immediately stinks of a gimmick. Horse hair extract? Really? This ingredient is clearly trying to imply that the characteristic strength or horses extends to their follicles, and that it can be harnessed by you with this “one miracle pill”. Disgraceful.
2. The theme continues with the next ingredient – shark cartilage! SHARK cartilage!? Cartilage is a ubiquitous, chemically homogeneous tissue in many animals. There is nothing special about shark cartilage, except that it again has underlying implications of strength and vigor. These people should be ashamed of themselves. They are con men victimizing desperate people.
3. Mollusc extract. How vague can one get? Is it mussels or squid? Land snails or oysters? They may as well have said “animal extract”. In this ambiguity they hope balding people could project magic. Another con.
4. On the “scientific studies”, more horse… hair. Published in either low impact or non peer reviewed journals with tiny populations and insufficient control groups. I would have thought a cure for baldness would be big news!? Did the authors not attempt to publish these revolutionary findings in Nature or Science? No, because they are biased, fake studies used to peddle lies.
is it easily found online and mentioned in the article that horsetail is another name for “Equisetum,” which is a plant, and not horse hair, so there’s that.
I love your reply, im one of the desperate fools that is currently trying it…i won a 6 months supply, so i thought, why not! Ive been taking it for 2 months now. the only difference I can see is my natural hair growth anyway. Ive not experienced any side effects, but then Im not experiencing any effects at all. Im just glad i didn’t pay a fortune for it because i would be bitterly disappointment.
I believe it references horsetail which is the name of a plant… Not an actual horse. Duh
Wow…finally someone with a voice of reason. Horsetail is a plant..however, from a marketing aspect, it does make a person think of horse tail being long and thick..so I get it. What happened to the time when 1 could grow old with pride…creepy skin and thinning hair. Supplement companies use peoples’ insecurities against them. Can’t gain weight, can’t get gray hair, can’t get wrinkles..man that just adds more stress to us.
I am on my 4th month of using this Viviscal. I have thyroid issues and have lost most all of my body hair and the hair on my head was horribly thin….so much so that the doctor even said how thin my hair was. I am a vegan but was so desperate to have hair back on my head, I decided to try it. Well I have to say, after the 1st month there was a noticeable amount of growth, so I went for month two. 4 months in and I can actually part my hair and not have any bare spots visible at ALL. I am thankful I am not one of the people that this did not work for.
Stephanie
Which viviscal did you get?
hello, I also have a thyroid problem, hyper….my question to you was did you have any weight gain?
I had my thyroid removed and would like to know as well if you had any weight gain
Hi Geannene, for what its worth, Im not aware of any issues with viviscal and being hypothyroid.
Joe,
I also have hypothyroidism. I would also like to know which one you suggest to use. Thanks!
Hi Chantel, for what its worth I dont think either version of Viviscal would impact your thyroid. Like everything else, Id seperate it from your thyroid meds by 1-2 hours to play it safe. If you are still losing your hair while you are on your thyoid meds, get your TSH levels measured by your doctor again. Lets see if you are taking the correct dosage.
Thank you!
Stephanie which viviscal did you get?
I want to know too, Stephanie, Which Vivical are you taking?
which type of viviscal did you use? and did you notice any weight gain??
Hi Kathy, in case Stephanie doesn’t see your question, in the review I break the different types of Visiscal down according to its active ingredient.
Viviscal Extra Strength: 450 mg
Viviscal For Men : 450 mg
Viviscal Professional: 475 mg
As you can see, there is not much difference. I’m not sure if adding an extra 25 mg to Viviscal professional means it will work better than Extra Strength or the Mens version. I have not seen any studies showing it does. So, I’m neutral on this for the moment.
But, lets see what Stephanie -or anyone else who wants to chime in – wants to say they used.
