What Is Relaxium?
Relaxium is not a prescription drug but a sleep aid dietary supplement. According to the company that makes this supplement – American Behavioral Research Institute – its Tripple Action Formula is touted to address 3 key areas that keep you from getting a good night's sleep:
- regulating your natural sleep cycle
- relaxing the body
- calming the mind

Relaxium Ingredients

Passionflower | 75 mg | |

The other ingredients are rice flowers and vegetable cellulose. Melatonin is the final ingredient listed. Melatonin has a long history of use in sleep aid supplements, which may make some wonder if it is the main ingredient in Relaxium.

The cost is about $35 online. What Is Valerest?
Valerest is the name of the proprietary blend in this sleep aid supplement and is a registered trademark owned by the Relaxium company – also called the American Behavioral Research Institute.
Valerest is said to induce sleep safely and naturally and is composed of two ingredients: valerian root extract (Valerina Officinalis) and hops (Humulus lupulus). Valerian extract is listed first, making up most of the 228.9 mg of the Valerest propriety blend.
Valerest Clinical Study
The company states Valerest's effectiveness is backed by a university clinical study where it was compared to melatonin, a popular pharmaceutical drug. The company's results showed Valerest “significantly improved the quality of life through better sleep.” While this is encouraging, there are several problems, such as:
- Where has the full Valerest University study been published? It can't be located.
- Was the study peer-reviewed? They don't tell us.
- What university conducted the study? It's not listed.
- How long did the study last? They don't say.
- How many people were in the study? They don't tell us.
- Did the study contain both men and women? Unknown.
- What was the dosage of Valerest used? The amount is not listed.
- How much melatonin was used? They don't tell us.
- Did Valerest induce sleep better than melatonin? They don't say.
- What was the pharmaceutical drug? It's not mentioned.
- Did Valerest perform better than the prescription drug? They don't mention that either.
Without seeing the actual university study, we cannot know how well Valerest performed. Another question is if Valerest performed so well, why does Relaxium Sleep also contain melatonin and other ingredients?
Relaxium Sleep Research
To prove the supplement really works, the company supported a clinical study. At one time, bottles of Relaxium Sleep indicated these results:
- Fell asleep 140% faster
- Slept longer by 266%
- Woke up alert and refreshed 69% better
- Showed 80% better concentration
However, bottles no longer show the percentages next to the benefits. Oddly, improvements in concentration are no longer displayed on bottles.
The Relaxium clinical trial's title is A Study to Evaluate the Effects of Relaxium in Subjects with Sleep Disorders. It involved 35 men and women with insomnia. The study lasted two weeks and was published in the Journal of Insomnia and Sleep Disorders (vol 1 issue 1), published by Annex Publishers (annexpublishers.com).
During the first week, people took 2 placebo capsules before bed, and in the second week they took 2 Relaxium capsules each night at bedtime. The people kept sleep diaries and underwent before and after sleep tests. Sleep quality and duration were measured using a Fit Bit Inspire fitness tracker.
Relaxium Clinical Study Results
Compared to the placebo, people rated on diaries Relaxium Sleep better at:
- improving the quality of their sleep
- making it easier to fall asleep
- having improved daytime concentration
The results sound impressive. However, problems include:
- It was a small investigation containing only 35 people.
- Difficulties were reported using the Fit Bit tracker, which may have impacted sleep quality results.
Also, for the people who they had complete data sets for, Relaxium was only shown to be significantly better than placebo for improving daytime concentration. In other words, in that group, Relaxium did not improve sleep. Is it possible this due to difficulties with using the FitBit?
Bottom line: this study needs to be duplicated.
Does Ashwagandha Help Sleep?
Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng), one of the ingredients in Relaxium Sleep is an adaptogenic herb touted to do many things including helping improve the quality of your sleep. Does it work? Here's a quick video on the ashwagandha-sleep research.

Relaxium Side Effects & Contraindications
No side effects were reported in the Relaxium Sleep clinical study. If you are going to try this insomnia supplement and want to ensure you have the best results with the most safety and have minimized side effects and possible drug interactions, here are some points to consider.
- Start by taking less than recommended for the first week. This might reduce GI upset and diarrhea if they occur.
- Speak to your doctor and pharmacist if you take any prescription medications such as blood thinners like warfarin (coumadin), blood sugar medications like metformin, and high blood pressure medicines like beta-blockers.
- There's no proof Relaxium Sleep helps sleep apnea.
- In theory, the ingredients may be inappropriate for those with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
- Animal research suggests ashwagandha may not be safe during pregnancy. Avoid if you are breastfeeding.
- Passion flower may not be safe during pregnancy.
- Stop taking Relaxium at least 2 weeks before surgery unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Avoid combing with alcohol-containing beverages.
- Don't drive or operate motorized equipment while taking.
- Don't combine with prescription sleeping pills like Ambien or over-the-counter sleeping pills or dietary supplements.
- Ashwagandha may lower blood sugar levels and/or interact with diabetes medications.
- Ashwagandha may raise thyroid hormones and reduce TSH levels.
- While rare, melatonin might be associated with heart palpitations in those with heart problems such as irregular heart rhythms.
Relaxium Lawsuit
A class action lawsuit (Aimee Lomedico vs. American Behavioral Research Institute LLC d/b/a, Relaxium) was filed in July of 2022 over false and misleading claims made about the supplement being “clinically proven” to help sleep. The company reached a settlement in December 2022 year, although the terms of the settlement are not known.
Relaxium and The FDA
No FDA warning letters to the company were discovered. Likewise, no warning letters from the Federal Trade Commission (FCC) were found either. This is good as it implies that the company is complying with federal dietary supplement guidelines.
Relaxium Sleep vs. Relaxium Calm
Here are the ingredients in the sleep and calm supplements side-by-side:

It is not known if Relaxium Calm works better or if the Sleep and Calm supplements work better together.
Relaxium Max Focus Ingredients
The Max Focus supplement contains several different ingredients than the Relaxium Sleep. Most notable is caffeine, which is the first ingredient listed for the proprietary blend. Caffeine makes up most of the 550 mg blend of ingredients. Do not take Max Focus close to bedtime or it may keep you awake. Caffeine as well as both bacopa monnieri and huperzine A have some memory and focus research. Speak to your doctor and pharmacist if you take any medications.

What Do I Suggest?
Of all the ingredients in Relaxium the two that caught my attention the most are melatonin and ashwagandha. If you're looking to save money, consider one of these by itself to see how it works for you. Here are two brands I like:
Does Relaxium Sleep Really Work?
The ingredients make sense for asleep supplement, with ingredients having various degrees of support. It is good that the company has sponsored a clinical trial, although it needs to be replicated. While I'm sure it will work for many people, with respect to Mike Huckabee's TV commercial claims, I wonder if Relaxium Sleep may be an expensive melatonin supplement.
Check out what customers are saying.
GARY FLOYD says
need a refund and a return label, called and cancelled my account and still got charged and a shippment.
Joe Cannon says
Gary, Did you call the number listed above in the review? This website isn’t associated with Relaxium but I do suggest you call again and try to get a refund. Does anyone else here have insights to help Gary?
Gene Empey says
I got sick like food poisoning and thought it was something I ate. Didn’t take for several days, then next time (maybe 5 days later) I got sick again. I thought maybe it was Relaxium but not sure so several days later I took it again. Same result except worse nausea. There is no doubt in my mind that Relaxium made me sick. I will never take again. Pass this on to Mike Huckabee please.
Joe Cannon says
Gene, so sorry to hear that happened to you! Did you take Relaxim on an empty stomach or not too long after eating? Stomach upset/GI problems are something Ive noticed with supplements when they are taken on an empty stomach. Just wondering if maybe that might be the cause. It may be a long shot but I thought Id ask. Has anyone else reading this gotten sick after taking Relaxium supplements?
Gene I don’t know Mike Huckabee and don’t know anyone at the company but my hope is that they are aware of what people here are saying and make the necessary adjustments.
Miguel Flores says
I like other people ordered relaxium because of the free 30 day trial, and because of Mike Huckabee being a sponsor. I was never informed of the unannounced $119.00 charge prior to the 30 days. We are on a fixed income and cant afford this charge. The $119.00 could be used for medication badly needed every month. Please respond and give us our refund of $119.00 and also cancel our order. I can send back both bottles if you need too.
Joe Cannon says
Hi Miguel, I’m so sorry to hear what you said about the company not telling you about the $119. I suggest calling the company at the phone number I listed above in this review. If that does not happen, you might try filing a complaint with the better business bureau.
Rachel S James says
I can assure you this product is absolutely a miracle for my husband. 40 years ago, my husband and his late first wife lost a full term daughter in the womb. From that night until the second night he started using RELAXIUM he had not rested he slept 7-9 hours a night and woke up feeling like he did not rest a minute.
I saw the commercial and believe me we have tried a bunch of products NONE WORKED. But RELAXIUM did! The first night he felt the same I told him to take 3 not just the 2 he woke up the second morning looking like I had not ever seen him in the morning READY TO BEGIN HIS DAY!
I asked did you rest he said “YES and I did something I have not done in 40 years, I had a dream!!!” Folks I am telling you this is no fake! My husband and I stood in our dining room that morning and cried he has had restful nights ever since!!! You can not lose a thing if you try it you will not regret it!!! God bless you all!!!!
Lorraine StOnge says
Order #1416437. I ordered one bottle of relaxium, I received it. Today I received another bottle, why?
Please do not send any more. I do not want them.
Joe Cannon says
Hi Lorraine, if you contact the company they can help you figure that out. The contact number for the company is above. Also look over the details on the free bottle offer. Several people here have been surprised by the $119 charge to their credit card if you do not cancel within 17 days.
Jenny BayleSS says
Did nothing for me then you charged me $111.95 and to get anyone on by phone Is impossible. I do not recommend this company at all.
Joe Cannon says
Jenny, so sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. The part about not being able to reach the company to get a refund is something others here have reported as well. I have no idea why that is happening. Are you calling the same number as when you ordered Relaxium?
carol Grimaldo says
This product leaves a burning feeling in my stomach when I take it, Do not send me anymore of this product and tell me how to send back the unopened bottle that I have and I don’t want to see any more charges on my credit card. Thank you, but it just isn’t for me.
Joe Cannon says
Hi Carol, so sorry to hear you are having that reaction. Scroll up to the customer support phone numbers. I’m sure they will stop the credit card charges.
Tom Peck says
Fake product sold by a fake person
Jack Deriso says
To think I actually fell for this and paid shipping to receive something that absoulutely does not help me go to sleep is embarrassing. Scam, scam , scam.
Mary ann germeyer says
Horrible customer service if you can even get someone to answer, I have called over 9 times only to be put on hold for 20 minutes than I am cut off, it does not work for me and I want to send it all back but you cannot get them to send you what you need to do that, I had to call my credit card company to block any charges..
Joe Cannon says
Mary ann, I am awfully sorry to hear about the customer service! Were you calling the number I listed above? Have you tried filing a complaint with the better business bureau? Mary ann, this is not the Relaxium company but rather a website that reviews dietary supplements according to their claims and evidence. I am not associated with the company.
Rita Hensley says
I have tried all day to cancel this product but no one will answer the phone. That is poor business practices. I do not want any more of this product so you had better not charge my card or I will reverse the charges. If this is not a scam then why don’t you answer your phones?
Joe Cannon says
Hi Rita, is it Relaxium you are trying to get a hold of or another supplement company?
Willis McDowell says
Ripped Off BY on TV Preacher
I did not authorize Preacher Huckabee to take money from my bank account for the tune of $119.00 and I want my money back. His Miracle pill made me sick
Joe Cannon says
Willis so sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. Have you tried reaching out to the company?
Sharon baxter says
Relaxium Sleep did NOT work for me. I left a voice mail and tried many times to call to cancel but was on hold so long I gave up each time. I would like to cancel and get my money back because it didn’t work for me. Order # 899493611 Date 6-16-2022
Joe Cannon says
Hi Sharon, sorry to hear you are having difficulty contacting the Relaxium company. Did you call the customer service number I listed above in the review?
W Eaddy says
I tried relaxium for 4 nights. woke up very groggy, light headed, nauseas. I felt drugged. I have always admired Mike Huckabee but I am disappointed in his product. Lies. Do not bill or send men any more. I have returned unopened bottle to you.
Joe Cannon says
W. Eady, scroll up to see how to contact the company if you need to.
Jim wilson says
I have no idea how I have ordered and received Relaxium Calm when I thought I was ordering Relaxium Sleep. I did not know there were two different products. I want to return the Calm and get my free bottle of Relaxium Sleep.
Are these products made by the same company? If not please let me know immediately.
Thank you.
Jim Wilson
Joe Cannon says
Hi Jim, if you call the Relaxium company they can help you with returning Relaxium Calm and getting Relaxium Sleep. The customer service number is 888-353-1205
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Roberta Buxman says
You sent this to Henry Buxman and he has been dead for 6 years.
Joe Cannon says
Roberta, I’m SO sorry! If you reach out to the company I’m sure they will fix this.
charles garnett says
Mike Huckabee claims on TV ads along with a friend with both of them holding a guitar
that relaxicum works the first time they tried it. That is not true .I have made a request and recieved credits 4 payments of $44.93
I have received 4 refund payments of $44.93 for a total of$179,72,
I am entitled to receive$ an additional $314.69 which was charged on my credit card.
I am prepared to file a complaint against Mike and all parties concerned if this is not done .
This includes the FTC(FEDERAL TRADE COMMISION) and all other state and federal agencies that deal with fraud.
kenneth connolly says
I will never listen to Mike Huckabee again. I should have known, a politician who preaches about God. I only tried it because I believed him. What a fool I am. He had some problems in Arkansas and now his daughter is running. She did a nice job for Trump but I wouldn’t trust her either. I wasted a lot of time, I got super aggravation, All I wanted was to try the free bottle for the shipping charge, just as Mike said. But NNOOOOOO! If you want to keep your word, and send me one free bottle for the handling price, with NO OTHER GIMMICKS OR STRINGS ATTACHED, then I will try it, If it works, I will be a lifetime customer. Politicians are the last refuge of a scoundrel! What are you going to do? Kenny Connolly
Joe Cannon says
Kenneth, thank you for sharing this! So sorry you had to deal with such a hard time to get the free bottle. Hopefully, Mike sees this and brings it to their attention.
Gracie says
I agree with Kenneth. I hope the money Mike Huckabee is paid by Relaxium is enough to compensate for Mike’s complete loss of credibility. After the disgusting experience ordering, etc I completely cancelled my order. Wish I had read these reviews before dealing with that company. Sad that Mike Huckabee and Larry Gatlin are that hardup for money.
Joe Cannon says
Gracie, so very sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the Relaxium company.
Virginia Riso says
Yes I sent for 2 free bottles and they said they would charge me 7.00 shipping I told them I was just trying two free bottles to see if its good for me , and it wasnt left me drowsey all day .So today I look at my on line bank statement and they Charged me 119.90 they never told me I had to pay 119.90 first time they said just shipping thats not right I bought because I trusted Mike Huckabee saying try free bottles but I guess cant trust anyone I want my money back
Joe Cannon says
Virginia, I am SO sorry that happened to you also. As I mentioned in the review you have only 17 days to tell them to stop or they will charge you $119.90. Im not happy with that free trial period. I wonder how many are aware of it. When you ordered the free trial did they mention the 17 day time period?
Gracie says
I should explain that the “Free Trial” actually meant that first I had to pay around $119 90 day supply. Also they had personal information (such as my first name) which I never gave nor mentioned.
Joe Cannon says
That’s interesting Gracie, so they knew your first name before you told them? Maybe they had caller ID?
Gracie says
My first name was not on caller i.d. I placed the order using my middle name (which I go by and is on credit card). The order confirmation that was emailed to me had my first name, not middle name.
Joe Cannon says
wow Gracie, that is spooky! It shows how much info about us big tech already knows.
Bella Fortez says
Thank you Joe for this post. I think some of the ingredients interacts with the meds I’m taking. I’ve tried almost all of these natural sleep aids, spent & wasted money & since I’ve taken zolpidem for over 10 yrs none of these will ever work. Besides i have no co-pay, i get 6-7 hrs sleep, I’ll stick with zolpidem until the end. Have a great day!
Joe Cannon says
Thanks Bella, I understand. The good news is 6-7 hours sleep a night is in the range of what many say is healthy
Pat Comiskey says
Relaxium is a waste of money. They did give us the refund.
Joe Cannon says
Thanks for the feedback Pat. I’m glad to hear the company stood behind their product and got you a refund.
Brydee says
Hi there,
I am trying to initiate a refund by this company. After speaking to a live person (Courtney) she said they do not provide return authorization labels. Also, it is up to me to pay for the return and would take a month. Also, didn’t guarantee a full refund. Said, once they received product they would inspect and check that all bottles were unopened and able to be stocked back to their inventory.
Is this similar to how your refund was handled?
Thanks,
Joe Cannon says
Brydee, wow so sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. The 17 day refund policy is crap in my opinion. This site has hundreds of supplement reviews and the Relaxium guarantee is by far one of the shortest I’ve seen. They don’t give you a return authorization label? how then do they know the bottles came from you?
I understand you having to pay to return the items to them – that is pretty standard – but taking a month to get you a refund sounds fishy to me.
I hope Pat can shed light on this for you and you keep us all posted on how your refund goes.
