Update 3/9/20. Leptigen is a weight loss supplement that contains an interesting ingredient called MeraTrim. Does Leptigen work? Does It have any side effects? Who makes Leptigen? These will be some of the questions I'll try to answer in this review. Leptigen is not the same thing as Lipothin which is another weight loss supplement. See the DietSpotLight Burn review for more information.
What Does The Name Mean?
The name Leptigen is interesting because it reminds me of “Leptin” a hormone, made inside fat cells that play a role in hunger. The idea behind the name is a subtle reference that it might influence leptin levels and in doing, curb appetite and promote weight loss.
That said evidence the Lepigen alters leptin levels could not be located.
Leptigen Research
On the FAQ page of Leptigen.com it's stated that:
“we referenced 284 published scientific studies to verify the claims that we make about the ingredients in Leptigen.”
Understand that while research exists on the ingredients of the supplement, that is not the same thing as research on the supplement itself. To best understand the supplement its necessary to look at its ingredients.
Let's do that next.
Leptigen Ingredients
Each capsule of Leptigen has these ingredients:
Decaffeinated green tea extract | 200 mg |
Chromium polynicotinate (Chromate) | 100 mcg (83% DV) |
Meratrim | 400 mg |
Caffeine | 75 mg |
The label lists these 2 ingredients as well:
- MeraTrim
- Green Select EGCG
See the Research Section below.
Other Ingredients
Leptigen also contains these “other ingredients”
- Gelatin
- Cellulose
- Silicon dioxide
- Magnesium stearate (vegetable source)
- Lecithin phospholipids
These other ingredients play no role in the effects or benefits of the supplement.
Chromium Polynicotinate
This is another name for chromium. It's a combination of chromium and niacin (a B vitamin). Supplements often contain chromium bonded to vitamins to increase absorption. Chromium has been used in weight loss supplements for many years, although most research shows it does not work. See the review of chromium and weight loss .
Chromium polynicotinate is sometimes found in weight loss supplements, likely due to a study from the 1990s noting that it helped women lose weight (woman taking chromium picolinate actually gained weight).
See the review of chromium polynicotinate for more information.
Leptigen uses a trademarked brand of chromium polynicotinate called “ChromeMate” made by a company called InterHealth Nutraceuticals (now part of Lonza company). To support its effects this study noted it helped people lose weight more than a placebo.
Leptigen contains 100 micrograms of ChromeMate which is more than the above study used, so that is good.
More good news is Chromate is not expensive
Caffeine
Many weight loss supplements contain caffeine. The idea is probably twofold:
1. caffeine appears to have a small fat burning effect
2. people who are more awake might burn more calories through doing more physical activity
Leptigen has 75 mg of caffeine per capsule. That's about what is in a cup of coffee.
Green Select EGCG
This is a trademarked version of green tea found in Leptigen. This form is supposed to be better absorbed than “regular” green tea. Another name for this ingredient is Green Select Phytosome. One study showing Green Select Phytosome helped people lose weight.
MeraTrim
MeraTrim is another ingredient in Leptigen. It's composed of two separate ingredients:
- Sphaeranthus indicus
- Garcinia mangostana
There is some weight loss research on MeraTrim.
The research notes that Meratrim works when people take 800 mg per day. I'll assume Leptigen has this amount but I'm not sure as I could not determine the amount from the label.
See the MeraTrim Review

Previoulsy the BBB used to list another website for the company – “Avesil.com.” Before Leptigen, there was another weight loss supplement called Avesil. Their ingredients looked very much alike.
Leptigen and Avesil have both been promoted on DietSpotlight website. Another supplement promoted on the website is

How To Return Leptigen
The supplement came with a 120-day money-back guarantee. Before returning Leptigen call their customer service department at 800-555-3951. Oddly, The product return page stated: “We cannot accept returns on overly used products.” What does “overly used products” mean?

Does Leptigen Work?
Leptigen has no clinical studies to know if it works or not. However, there are a few studies on Meratrim which is an ingredient as well as Green Select Phytosome.
What’s the name of product that your sister is taking…thank you for sharing
Has anyone who stupidly didn’t read the fine print and tried to get their money back had any success? I’m a struggling college student and I’m desperate for that $95. I hadn’t even tried the product yet 🙁
Hi Nora, have you called the company yet and asked for a refund?
I want something that really really works! I am 5’8″ and 170lbs And would love to lose about 20 lbs . Any suggestions Joe ?:-)
Hi Krys, here is a list of supplements and other things that I feel have evidence:
http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
I’ve also known people who have lost lots of weight with both weight watchers and Jenny Craig if that helps.
I ordered the trial about a week ago. Have not had any side effects and do notice a decrease in appetite that is for sure. I called to cancel because I wanted to finish the trial and order later if I see results in another week, rather than worry about being charged.
Customer service was very nice, immediately offered me 14 more days free, and more time to think it over. If I decide I want another month, do nothing and a month supply will be shipped and my card charged only half of what a month would normally be. I have until October 29th until my card would be charged. Thought that sounded good!
I just called and ordered the 15 trial. They were actually very nice to me on the phone, very up front about the monthly billing after the trial, and told me how to cancel at any time.
I asked what promotions they currently had, in which case they offered me a $49 per/month, instead of $95 per/month, to begin billing after the 15-day trial. They also extended the trial by 3-days to allow for shipping and said I am able to call and request additional time if I want to return it after 15 days. Again, fully upfront about the billing.
Today they only charged the $3.95 s+h and they made me aware they will charge the $49 in 18 days. Unless you are unable to read, I find it hard to believe that some of these reviews say they had no idea about the monthly billing. I read it plain as day on the website and talked about with the sales rep over the phone.
What was the number you called I have tried several to return my pills and all numbers are disconnected ?
Hi Sharon, did you call 800-555-3951? that is the number I have listed in my review. What other numbers did you call?
Im in Australia so although it says they are open 8am-7pm I had to stay up till after 10pm to get through.
Joe, I love your reviews! Can you comment on the product “melt”? I’ve seen it on amazon and
was curious if you have looked into it at all.
Hi Kathy, I looked up Melt. I would not recommend it especially for those with health problems like high blood pressure or heart disease to name just two. It has several stimulants such as:
Phenylethylamine (PEA)
Hordenine
Yohimbie
Higenamine
Synephrine
I’ve covered these ingredients below in other reviews. Just enter those words in the search box at the top of my site and you can check them out. It also has another ingredient – dendrobium whcih is a type of orchard. I’ll be covering that in my next review (due out soon) on a wt loss supplement called Phen375.
Here is a list of things that I feel have some evidence. http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
that link goes to my personal website
I didn’t give any credit card details how will they charge for this
Don’t order the sample kit. They keep charging your credit card and sending you supplements that you never ordered!
I am on my 7th day trying Leptigen. From the second day I have felt somewhat less tired in the afternoon. Not like a rush just not exhausted during my drive home from work. I have not weight or measured my self since starting the product and not planning to until a full 30 days on the product.
I did call and have the trial period extended and was offered a price discount if continued. They were friendly and were willing to cancel or extend. No risks. Also, I have no side effects and feel great considering I do have some health issues. So far so good.
Taking into account all of the factors you use when reviewing a product for weight loss, what is the best reviewed product available for weight loss?
Hi Mary, I feel the best evidence is for supplements that contain fiber. Here is a link to my personal site where I describe some of those products that I feel might work http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
I started using Leptigen. I was unaware of the charge. Thank you for laying out the process. I have had less of an appetite, loss 2 lbs. And feel like my belly fat has noticeably diminished. I enjoy water more. I’m not thirsty with dry mouth. Just thirsty for water. I am happy with the results, Although I have experienced some stomach cramps and loose stool.
Very nice review and easy to follow. I feel like I have learned a lot. Thank you all for sharing.
Thank you for this informative review! I started Leptigen yesterday and haven’t noticed any side effects as of yet. So far so good!
I called to cancel my trial subscription today that I placed on 8/10 which would be 7 days ago. The lady was very nice and sent me a cancellation email to confirm. I told her I read that I would have to return the bottle and she said since it was the 15 day trial that I could keep it as a courtesy.
I was kind to her and therefore she was kind to me back. Now to see if this stuff works! If it does I may try the cheaper option of Meratrim. Has anyone tried that?
Hi Desiree, so glad they were nice to you when you called. I have not met anyone yet who has tried MeraTrim but see my review for the research on that product.
Keep us all posted on how Leptigen works for you.
Everyone takes their time to write a bad review but very few will take time to share their positive experience.
I ordered the free sample and decided to cancel since I wasn’t seeing results, the representative on the phone was very helpful and offered me a promotion that would allowed me to try another month of product for a discount. I’ve started my new product and I’m definitely starting to see changes.
PS. Terms and conditions are clearly stated before placing the order.
Hi Yvonne, thanks for sharing and I am glad you are seeing good results. Question: did you start another round of Leptigen or did they offer you a different supplement? I wasn’t sure from your words.
I wish I would have read all the comments before ordering the supposed free sample. I now have a pending charge of $95.90 which I will be disputing with my credit card company for a product that in one pill had far worse side effects than those listed! The sample request I filled out said NOTHING about having to cancel to avoid being charged!!
I will be filing complaints with the state attorney general and the federal trade commission.
Hey the same thing is happening with me right now. I am extremely upset. I will be filing fraud against them if they don’t refund my money immediately. Ridiculous. Nothing in the website states they would send more bottles and charge me.
What website ? I just ordered a free sample ekkkkk
Actually, it does…which is why I didn’t order from them. It states clearly that they would continue to send and charge, and I didn’t want that. I ordered mine from amazon, and paid less.
The free sample comes with a paper that says “CONGRATULATIONS ON CHOOSING LEPTIGEN”
On that paper there is supplement facts, directions, and a paragraph about how you will be charged for a one month supply of LEPTIGEN if you do not call and cancel the subscription.
You’re not going to have a case.
I read that too… it said it would charge 89.95 and 5.95 S&H after the free trial.
Yep they are right.
I just received my free sample and on my order it told me I had 14 days from the day I placed my order until I would be charged the full price. I also received the same disclaimer in the packaging. I only got my order today and I will say I’m not as hungry as I normally am. But, I have another 7 days before I need to decide if I want to stay with it.
It says so in the paragraph below in fine print. It says you must call to cancel after 15 days or will be charged $89.95 plays $5.95 S&H per month for a 30 day supply. Read the fine print people!
Usually an offer that is too good to be true has fine print. In this case, it was simply a matter of knowing to look for the “extra”. I called the company to cancel the subscription and they extended the trial period, threw in an extra sample and lowered the cost of the subscription.
The website clearly states, “Cancel anytime before the end of the trial period to avoid being enrolled in our Leptigen member program. As part of the program, we will automatically send you a fresh one-month supply of Leptigen beginning in 15 days and every 30 days thereafter for just $89.95 plus $5.95 shipping and handling, which you authorize to be charged each month to the card you provide today. If you’d like to change your shipping frequency, cancel your Leptigen membership, or if you have any questions, call 800-555-3951 anytime and one of our weight loss advisors will be happy to assist you.”
These are in the Terms and Conditions that you agreed to reading before you submitted your order. So you have absolutely no leg to stand on with the attorney general. It’s not the company’s fault that you did not read the Terms and Conditions.
Awesome article Joe.
I stumbled across your research because someone at the gym is trying to push ‘thrive’ patches on everyone. I hate stickers – on anything, not just my skin – so I’m reluctant to even try it.
Do you know anything about it?
Hi Michelle, thanks so much. Yes, I have reviews of a few of their products
Thrive Patch
Thrive W
Thrive Shake
Hope that helps 🙂
I just ordered the 15 day free sample. I will let you know how it goes! At the moment I am 5 8″ and 136 lbs, trying to reach a goal of 120 lbs.
You will be billed for a full bottle if you don’t cancel it. Be careful!
Very informative. Very candid. Enjoyed every paragraph. Thank you for being you and thanks for sharing.
Hi Musa, thank you for saying that. I truly appreciate it.
Wow, Joe. You are so thorough and I, like Musa, am very appreciative.
Hi Diva, you’re going to make me blush:) Thanks so much!
Thank you for such a great , thorough review. Your honesty is MUCH appreciated!
Hi Mary, you are very welcome 🙂
my sister has tried a different product and had great results with it so i was going to try it and send the leptigen back. the other product is way cheaper also. just called them and they actually cancelled my account and told me to keep the rest of the product.
What was the other products name??
What is the other product
Other product name, PLEASE!!!!
I’m also curious as to what the other product is. I like the fact that this product helps curb my appetite but the price is pretty steep!
What was the other product U tried?? Im dying to find one that actually works if there even is one that exists, so please share!! Thanks!!!
Hi Heather, if it helps, here is a list of wt loss supplements I believe might work
http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
I have tried this “super magic” pill. I knew I should have listened to my gut feeling and known better.
First of all you, literally have no time to open the bottle before you get charged FULL price upon receiving it. Since I was already charged for it I though what the heck let’s try. I was irritable, my heart rate was going up and down to the point where I though I might have a heart attack. tried it for 5 days before I knew it was not worth even 1 dime!
No results but the feeling of me being on the verge of a heart attack was scary! DON’T DO IT!!! nothing is worth sacrificing your health. Eat less and walk that always works. Yes, it won’t produce overnight results but you will be ALIVE!
I also knew better at trying a supplement that makes such strong claims. I am not over weight, but wanted to see and test this supplement to look at the active ingredients. They were offering one sample bottle for under $4.00 so I thought why not. I took one pill as prescribed and had all the symptom that the bottle warns you about and I stopped taking it immediately.
It really sent my heart racing, stomach cramps, loss of appetite and nausea. I am not touching it again.
Thank you for your informative article on the product and about the return information. They only charged me the introductory price, but the total amount is pending on my credit card statement, so I suspect if I don’t contact them they will charge me.
In my opinion it has serious side effects.
Hi Laura, you are welcome and I hope you are feeling better now.
The website is misleading, and the product is only guarenteed for 14 days. This means you purchase the product on the 1st and you receive it on the 6th you have only 7 days to try it before you are automatically charged 89.95.. Leptigen doors not give you a full 30 days to test the product and allow you the consumer to make an informed decision as to the product worthiness of continued participation.
And Hazel in customer service was very rude. But wait if you cancel you are offered a $20.00 discount additional off the 89.95 you spotted on your debit and your nectar bottle is only $39.95 (free shipping of course) for a total of $113.95. NO THANK YOU
I agree most products take some time (60 days according to Hazel) to show some change. I would have most likely been a satisfied and repeat customer had LEPTIGEN offered say fairly charge a minimal fee of $50 or so at the time of order with a FULL 30 DAY TRIAL NOT JUST 7 DAYS.
I urge everyone to rethink this company before signing up. I will be sharing my experience on social sites and blogs.
I am like you and quick to call to stop the trail and was told all the same information. But when I told the girl I would return the entire bottle to just refund my 3.95 trial amount she then said she could sell the entire bottle to me for 5.95 which I did. I just started mine today so results to follow also.
I am one of those who takes a close look at all of these supposed weight-loss products. I find your discussions with all these products very helpful. I can now understand why I DON’T send for any of them. My diet is- eat less, eat good foods in low ‘doses,’ stay away from CANDY, SODA, et.al.
In order to lose weight naturally, do just that- eat natural foods, as my wife had been doing, staying away from fatty foods, etc. She has lot 15 pounds, and I have gone from weighing 215 pounds to 185 pounds!!!! The NATURAL way. Of course, to each his- or her- own…
HI Stephen, that is wonderful – congrats to you and your wife!
There’s other blogs out there recommending this particular product. I always try and search different opinions before purchase of anything. I’m glad I ran onto this blog as I am a mother of 4 and money runs short in my house. I have been eating healthy and working out almost. Everyday but I want a little bust since I lose faith on anything really quick. Thanks for everyone’s response and sorry for you experience.
Annabelle, thanks for sharing. I had no idea so many other sites were recommending this product. Thank you for the heads up.
