Update 12/6/22. At one time, Anatabloc was a SUPER popular anti-inflammation supplement. It was sold online and at GNC and elsewhere. It was touted to help reduce pain, help joints and arthritis pain, and reduce chronic inflammation. Anatabloc was unique. It contained an ingredient not found in any other supplement I've EVER seen in over 20 years of investigation. This unique ingredient also contributed to its own downfall. In this unbiased, updated review, I reveal everything you need to know about Anatabloc, from its rise – and fall – to the research and proof and the company which made it. I'll also shed light on other anatabloc supplements too.
What Is Anatabloc
Before we talk about Anatabloc (sometimes misspelled Anatablock), I need to tell you about Anatabine (also called anatabine citrate). Anatabine is the active ingredient in Anatabloc. Anatabine is a chemical found in
- eggplants
- potatoes
- green tomatoes
as well as tobacco and tobacco smoke (remember this).
Chemically, anatabine “looks” like nicotine. Because of this, it was also used some anti-smoking supplements. Anatabine has a longer half life than nicotine, so it stays in the body longer. That's why it was thought it might help people quit smoking.
How Does Anatabloc Work?
Here is the way Anatabloc was supposed to reduce chronic inflammation:
1. Anatabine enters the cells of the body where it…
2. Deactivates a protein called NFkB.
3. When NFkB is deactivated, it can't enter the nucleus of the cell (the brain center of the cell) to cause excessive cellular inflammation.
Inflammation is thought to play a role in MANY diseases, such as:
and many others.
So, if Anabloc worked, it might have disease-modifying benefits. If you read the comments below, you will see some people have said some pretty amazing things too.
Anatabloc Ingredients
Anatabloc contains these ingredients
Anatabine | 1 mg |
Vitamin A | 500 IU |
Vitamin D3 | 40 IU |
This review will focus only on Anatabine because this is “secret sauce” in Anatabloc.
Other Ingredients
These other ingredients are also found in this supplement: Mannitol, natural and artificial mint flavors, sucralose, silicon dioxide, stearic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide (color), natural glaze, methylparaben, propylparaben, triethyl citrate, citric acid, BHT, mono and diglycerides, and polysorbate 80
These ingredients played no role in the results or benefits of Anatabloc.
Anatabloc Research
When this review was originally created, the proof for Anatabloc was mostly on lab animals. There is now human proof. This review will focus only on human research. Much of the research is on Anatabine, which is an active ingredient in Anatabloc. Still, proof for anatabine is proof for Antabloc.
Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals (more on them below) supports and plays a role in much of the research.
Studies On Anatabloc
In one report, researchers in the US gave Anatabloc or a placebo to 146 people with Hashimoto's disease – the most common form of hypothyroidism. People were given 9-24 mg of anatabine in the form of lozenges. Those taking Anatabloc saw a significant reduction in thyroid autoantibodies.
Some people saw over a 20% decrease in thyroid autoantibodies. This means better working thyroid glands.
One small study (10 people) noted a face cream containing anatabine improved skin appearance, reducing redness and blotchy skin appearance. This does make some sense. Niacin, which looks a little bit like anatabine has been used in skin creams for years.
Niacin is also VERY popular in the anti-aging world. See the Niagen review for more on this.
Anatabine cigarettes have been shown to reduce nicotine levels in smokers significantly. This study reflects the interest in using anatabine to help people quit smoking.
Because inflammation follows exercise, researchers were interested in seeing if anatabine would reduce inflammation after people worked out. In this study, 18 men were given either a placebo or 6-12 mg of anatabine per day for 10 days. They also performed an intense exercise program.
Unfortunately, this noted anatabine did not reduce pain, or swelling or help muscle strength. This is noteworthy, given TV commercials featuring pro golfers John Isner and Fred Couples.
In another exercise study, researchers gave Anatabloc or a placebo to 17 men. The dosage of Anatabloc used was 6-12 mg. While these researchers saw that Anatabloc did not reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, it did appear to reduce markers of inflammation such as C reactive protein (CRP). That is interesting.
Preliminary research suggests anatabine activates NFR2, a substance that raises naturally produced antioxidant defenses such as superoxide dismutase (SOD). This is at the heart of some proposed anti-aging supplements, such as Protandim and PB125.
There are also several lab animals and test-tube studies involving Anatabloc/anatabine. I won't cover them here because we are people and not mice, rats or test tubes.
Summary Of Anatabloc Research
Here is a summary of the Anatabloc human research:
- Anatabine reduced thyroid antibodies in people with hypothyroidism
- Anatabine lowers nicotine levels in smokers
- Anatibine did not reduce muscle damage, pain, or swelling but may lower CPR levels
Anatabloc Questions
Let's now answer some common questions people have asked me about this supplement.
Can Anatabloc help muscle soreness?
Muscle soreness after exercise (DOMS) is very common. Currently, the proof seems to show Anatabloc doesn't reduce muscle soreness, swelling or muscle damage. It may reduce a blood test marker of inflammation called CRP. I think we need more exercise research.
Can Anatabloc Help Concussions?
There is brain inflammation when someone gets a concussion. But there is no proof that taking Anatabloc:
- reduces the risk of getting a concussion
- improves recovery time after getting a concussion
- reduces brain damage from concussions
I cannot find any research involving anatabine and concussions.
In December 2013, the FDA sent a warning letter to Star Scientific – makers of Anatabloc – telling them to remove references on their websites which gave people the impression the supplement might help concussions and other forms of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
For more on concussions and TBI see these reviews:
Can Anatabloc Help Multiple Sclerosis?
The proof that Anatabloc can help MS is in its infancy. There is some mouse evidence it may help, but no human studies have been conducted yet.
What About Anataboc and Weight Loss?
Websites might discuss how anatabine/Anatabloc can help people lose weight or reduce weight gain, which sometimes happens when people quit smoking. But there is no good proof for this. No study has looked at reducing gaining weight after quitting smoking.
What is CigRx?
This is the anti-smoking product Star Scientific was developing before it began researching anatabine for arthritis pain and other health problems. CigRx contains anatabine too.
Anatabloc Dosage
The general recommendation is to take 2 lozenges per day. Do not use more than 6 lozenges per day. Another dosage recommendations= take your body weight into consideration. Here the Anatabloc dosages would be:
- 100-120 lbs: 2 lozenges 3x per day
- 121-170lbs: 2 lozenges 4x per day
- 171-220lbs: 2 lozenges 5x per day
- over 220lbs: 2 lozenges 6x per day
I've never seen this dosage regimen used in human studies. So, I'm not sure how accurate this is.
Who Makes Anatabloc?
Anatabloc is a product of a company called Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals. Another name for this company is Star Scientific. Star Scientific was the original name of the company. When the research changed directions from looking at Anatabine as a cure for smoking to helping arthritis pain, the company changed its name to Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals.
The phone number for the company was 800-778-2031. The company website was Anatabloc.com (the website no longer works). When this review was originally created, the Better Business Bureau listed the company address as 4470 Cox Rd Ste 110, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
There is also a connection to another company called the RosKamp Institute, located in Florida. Some of the research on Anatabloc has been conducted by this company too.
The company has since filed for bankruptcy and is no longer making Anatabloc supplements.
Should I Invest In Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals?
Star Scientific formally changed its name to Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals in 2014. Its stock symbol is RCPI. It's a publicly traded company. Regardless of what you invest in, do your homework.
Be careful with “gurus” who talk stocks up on websites, as you don't always know who you are dealing with. Sometimes unscrupulous people say things about a company to create interest so they can pump the stock price up so they can dump it for a profit. This trick is sometimes called “pump and dump.” Unless you’re an investing pro (think Warren Buffett), I recommend you talk to a financial advisor before risking any money.
Anatabloc And The FDA
Many people think the FDA does not regulate supplements. Anatabloc is proof it does. Almost from the start, the FDA claimed anatabine contained a new dietary ingredient (NDI). A new dietary ingredient is any substance that was not sold as a supplement before 1994.
Products containing new dietary ingredients need to prove to the FDA they are safe. There is also the issue that anatabine is found in tobacco. Tobacco cannot be called a dietary supplement. I think this may also have played a role in the demise of Anatabloc.
Rock Creek pharmaceuticals state that because anatabine is found in things like peppers and eggplants, it is not new and can be sold as a supplement. In the end, the FDA won, and Rock Creek stopped making Anatabloc.
Calls To Bring Back The Sale Of Anatabloc
Problems with the FDA have not stopped people from hoping for the return of Anatabloc.
This has not stopped people who loved Anatabloc from continuing to hold out hope. Former customers have launched a petition at Change.org to petition the FDA to reverse their decision and let Anatabloc be sold again.
They created the website BringBackAnatabloc.org where you can share your testimony of how the supplement helped you, sign an FDA petition to bring Anatabloc back, and read news about the supplement.
How To Buy Anatabloc: Can You Still Purchase It?
While this supplement was once VERY popular and sold at GNC and other stores, it is no longer permitted to be sold in the US. The FDA forced Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals to stop the production of Anatabloc.
Anatabloc Supplements
While Anatabloc is no longer able to be purchased in the US, I did notice other companies selling supplements said to contain anatabine.
One such company is HydraPharm (PredatorNutrition.com). They sell a supplement literally called “Anatablok” which they say contains “pure anatabine.” Predator Nutrition is not based in the US. I am not sure if they are allowed to ship their Anatablok supplement to the US.
The supplement is marked as an anti-inflammatory nootropic (brain enhancer) used to support memory and attention.
The Va Governor Controversy
As if things could not get worse, Rock Creek Pharm found itself at the center of a very public controversy involving the former Virginia governor, Robert McDonnell, and his wife. It's alleged Rock Creek gave $165,000 in gifts to the former Va governor and his wife in exchange for helping Rock Creek's development of Anatabloc.
Anatabloc Side Effects
Anatabloc is probably safe for healthy people, at least for short-term use. Human research shows no significant negative side effects. Mild to moderate side effects reported have included:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Tingling feelings
- Insomnia
In the comments section below, one person reported feelings of depression. This has not been observed in clinical studies.
Does Anatabloc Work?
Despite the problems with the FDA, several people swore Anatabloc worked. I never experimented with it when it was being sold and the only person I knew who did try it told me it did not reduce his pain. Pain is complicated and its possible others may have had better results.
Unfortunately, Anatabolc supplements are no longer available in the US. While, in the past, I have been rather hard on this supplement and Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, I was sad it was taken off the market. I am happy to see some human research on anatabine, look forward to more and hope one day to see it sold once again.
Carl I have just ordered the anatablock sample. They assured me, I would not be on auto bill program, and that they have terminated that. Will let you know.
Personally my health is not all that bad, but I hope and feel that this can get rid of some of my aches and pains.
To start with my wife and I both have, what I would call probably a chronic sort of hip condition. We both go to chiro once a month and immediately feel better, but the effects are not lasting as the out of place gets back out of place fairly quick. It holds for here better than me. Mine has got to the point that sometimes it almost adjusts itself as soon as I get on the table. What I have concluded is that the muscles no longer hold in place and need to exercise those muscles, but do I know. I also know that area tends to feel inflamed often, so I am hoping that the antabloc will reduce that inflammation and thus allowing the muscles along with some light stretches etc allow this whole area to actually begin to heal some.
Additionally, I have chronic headaches that always start on the left side and move up through the left temple and ear and manifest them in the left forehead area and other spots, occasionally there is some variation but mostly its as described. Again the chiro will adjust a lot of this out but sometimes its better than others even though he does pretty much the same thing. But there have been times when the results are out of sight. The headaches are also made worse or actually triggered with alchol. This also has variations.
Sometimes beer one 16 ounce glass will not bother, but almost always hard liquor or wine will trigger something, sometimes it comes soon after I have it. Other times it does not come till early in the morning typically between 3 and 5 (my chiro things there could be an emotional tie in there but have not resolved yet.) Usually 3 walmart headache pills ie Excedrin migraine will know this in 3 -5 minutes. Occasionally nothing works.
Additionally I have the low grade acid reflux if you will where a light amount works its way up the esophagus and rests on top of the vocal cords. This results in an irritation in the throat that we (my entire family i think is afflicted with this.) all think is sinus drainage. It may be some but the problem is the natural response is to cough. Simple coughing does nothing and so we have to clear our throats. However over time a simple throat clearing does not do it, instead it has to be a deep gutteral clearing that is very loud and very disconcerting to those around us.
Other than that I have some arthritis in my left wrist and a little in the neck and knees. And I like to eat ie graze all the time. Fortunately my weight is not that far out of line for a 70 yr old active male of my ht.
I tell you all of this so you wll be pre aware of my afflictions so that when I begin to participate in this dialogue, you will be aware of my history.
Additionally, my wife’s sister in law has had her body ravaged with Parkinsons i think, initially we thought it was ms but think Parkinsons is more accurate. It may be do far down the stretch for her but if this helps me, I am going to have a sample sent to her.
Joe
I have osteoarthritis in multiple joints(hips shoulders hands).I have had 3 hip replacements and my primary pain problem has been my shoulders.I work out on the eliptical almost every day and am an avid golfer.
4 days ago I started Anata Block and the results have been terrific. Shoulder and hand pain are substantially reduced and my usage of anti inflammatories has been cut in half.
My question is as to the best time to take the anatablock. I feel it is after exercise or golf and not before. Does this square with any of the responses you have received.
Jerry, in all the research I looked at, I never saw any mention as to the best time to take anatabloc. I’d say if its helping you, do what you have been doing or do a little experimenting to see if you get better results.
Jerry, 3 Hip Replacements, 1 just about has done me at 72 the complications have been unbelievable…but Anatabloc is helping with the “burning” from the complications, IT band damage and roaring spinal stenosis, all from hip replacement…I take 2 loz in AM, 2 in afternoon and 2 at bedtime, right when I hit the pillow… One has to take enough for their bodyweight as I understand it..some days I take 7 in total. You need to let the folks at: Totally Hip Support group know about this supp…talk about horror stories over there and all the replacements.
Jerry ——-
The Anatabine that is in Anatabloc has a half life of 8 hrs. So the Co.’s Dr.s recommend that one should determine the number of tablets that is appropriate for one’s weight and then split those 1/3 when you get up in the morning, 1/3 say in the middle of the afternoon and the remaining 1/3 at bedtime.
The most important of the above three times is at bedtime because the body will repair more damage while you sleep than during the day.
I am an avid user of Anatabloc for over a year and a half and because of that, I own stock in Star Scientific. I am a financial person, not a Dr.
Good luck,
Allan
Hi:
I just read about Anatabloc on Mary Shoman’s Thyroid newsletter on About.com. I did order the trial and then found your site when I was looking around for more information. To update the information about their policy for auto-ship: As of this week, they DO NOT automatically keep sending you the product. It states that on the trial offer page now. And, I did call the customer service number to verify that to be the case. If it works, it will be worth the money!
Cat T, I covered the study Mary Shoman mentioned in her newsletter, Its a mouse study. Just because it might help mice doesn’t mean it helps people. Did she say this in her newsletter? Im going to email you privately and ask you forward me her newsletter. Id like to take a look at what she said.
Joe you said that mary’s article was a mouse study but this is part of that article> Specifically, the ASAP (Anatabloc Supplementation Autoimmune Prevention) Human Thyroid Study — conducted at nine centers around the country – is analyzing the impact of anatabine dietary supplementation on thyroid health. The study is a three-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the impact of anatabine in people with autoimmune thyroid disease of the thyroid. Initial results for all study subjects are suggesting that dietary supplementation with anatabine reduces the immune system’s targeting of the thyroid gland in autoimmune thyroiditis.
The study subjects all had active autoimmune thyroid inflammation, based on sonograms, antibody levels, and measurement of cytokine levels. The study subjects then received Anatabloc treatment for three months, and evaluation showed statistically significant differences in the treated group as compared to the placebo group, including declines in anti-thyroglobulin antibody levels.
Dr. Paul Ladenson, who is serving as senior endocrinological consultant for the study, stated, “Data from this rigorously conducted, placebo-controlled, double blind trial show that anatabine-treated subjects had progressive decreases in circulating thyroglobulin antibody levels, which became significant by the end of the trial. Current treatment for autoimmune thyroiditis is limited to end-stage disease when irreversible gland damage necessitates lifelong thyroid hormone replacement. The prospect of a novel nutritional or pharmaceutical intervention that could preserve thyroid health represents an encouraging advance. Further clinical studies are now warranted.”
Am I reading this wrong are these humans or mice! Frank L
Frank, Mary quoted a published study on mice and what you are talking about are preliminary results from an unpublished study. When the study is published I will look at it. Until that happens, I wont consider it. I know those are hard words because a lot of people are putting a lot of faith in anatabloc but I prefer to stay on target and look at the published studies, with an emphasis on published human research. I’d still like to see her newsletter that discussed anatabloc.
Joe, don’t MOST pharma drug trials start with mice? Mice are in all the labs…
Joy, yes pharma does start with mice studies but those drugs are not rolled out to the public based on only mice studies. Anatabloc is marketed to people based on results from mice studies.
Joy can you email me Marys newsletter that discusses Anatabloc?
Joe, Pharma rolls out drugs every day, and 1000’s are dying from drug S/E interactions, etc…I haven’t met a drug without a S/E, we’re their guinea pigs…expect Armour I think…I’ll work on sending you Mary’s online newsletter… jm
Joy, everything has side effects but shouldnt there be better supplement research. set aside how you say it helps you, wouldn’t you like better anatabloc research before they rolled it out to the public?
I got it thanks 🙂
Hi Joe,
Here is the link to the full article by Mary Shoman:
nahypothyroidism.org/an-immune-system-and-thyroid-upside-for-tobacco/
You keep referencing the “mouse study” as if it is not really a worthy scientific exercise. But the fact is, scientists do clinical trials on mice because there is valuable data to be collected.
Also, Mary’s article serves as a timely reminder to us all that there was another Anatabloc-related thyroid study which for some reason is conveniently omitted from the discussion. It was a double-blind HUMAN study. Fortunately, Mary does not omit it from her article.
Thanks Joe!
John I appreciate that thanks. So the article you referenced is Mary Shoman’s newsletter? I just want to make sure the article and the newsletter are the same thing.
As for the flight attendant anatabloc study, Mary doesn’t tell where its published so I will conclude it is not a published study and as such, is interesting but not relevant. I understand that sounds hard and cold and nobody wants to hear it but I have to base my conclusions on published peer reviewed research. That is my litmus test for research.
As for the human thyroid trial (I apologize, omitted what you wrote because it was already covered and I am trying to cut down on people reading duplicate material), as I mentioned previously, the results are interesting and and when its published I’ll be very glad to read it.
John, your link is the NAH newsletter and NOT Mary’s that arrived in my email yesterday…the NAH info is one thing, and then there is Mary Shomon’s newsletter she sends to all on her email listing. I’m attempting to get it to Joe, if someone has not already….Anatabloc also has a published article on the 3 month study trials….
Just received Mary Shomon’s online newsletter:
About.comThyroidDisease and she is discussing
Anatabloc…Mary was my FIRST source back in 1991,
actually I met Mary’s work in 1999 when I struggling
with sluggish thyroid and could NOT get my MD to help
me…I now know that “NORMAL” mantra can be cwap dx.
Check out: thyroid.about.com
Oh, I’m taking 30mg less Armour now since on Abloc. jm
Turmeric side effects. I can take a low dose but when i up the dose, it irritates my stomach, a pharma anti inflammatory put me in the ER yrs ago, so I have a weakness in my stomach and turmeric irritates it. Turmeric usually does not cause significant side effects; however, some people can experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea.
Let me say I am a physician and find your analysis even handed and thorough. I have tried to access the portal for physicians, which asks me for a code I don’t have, and does not explain how to obtain one. It instead posts a reply saying my request will be “considered”. Fishy. Like you, I await the clinical trial… what are the side effects?
I find it unethical that a company would produce, market and sell what is essentially a relatively expensive drug without any mention of side effects as if they don’t exist. People have a right to know any risks they may be taking. The term “supplement” doesn’t mean it can’t harm you.
Gene, thank you very much for letting know about that Anatabloc health care professionals portal!
I received access to the physicians website which has an extensive “Terms of Use” agreement, so I can’t post any of it, but I will say GI upset, CNS complaints of headaches dizziness and insomnia, MSK complaints of back and joint pain, hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, and abnormal liver function tests were among the most common observed with the use of Anatabloc.
There are others, and I say more human study is needed to elucidate the benefits (if any) vs. the risks of use of this “supplement” before I could recommend it.
Gene, thanks for the follow up on that!
Joe, you have more experience in this stuff than I do, so let me ask you a question in reference to Dr. Quirini’s comments on side effects of Anatabloc. What kind of a company hides from its consumers possible deleterious side effects from the use of its product? Is this standard practice? I don’t recall seeing any such notice when I bought it.
John, all products have side effects. It’s just a matter of how likely they are to occur. As for how prevalent the side effects Dr Quirini said he saw at the anatabloc health care portal, I cant say. Since I am not a licensed health care provider they wont let me look at their data. I can say that I don’t recall anyone here reporting anything out of the ordinary.
John ——–
I suspect that Dr. Quirini looked at the details of the human thyroid study which is pending peer review and publishing.
Keep in mind, I believe, the thyroid study in humans consisted of therapeutic levels of Anatabine, which means the study subjects received MGs of Anatabine, per their body weight, greater than what is recommended for individuals using Anatabloc. Under such studies there could be determinations quite different from the currently available Anatabloc,
Also, keep in mind, that the subjects in this study all had some form of thyroid problem at the time the study was started. So again, looking at the study results, Dr. Quirini did not quote any %s or indications of how prevalent the effects he sited actually had in the study subjects.
If you care to go to the Co.’s website and research the history of Anatabloc, you will find that this product was well vented before it was available in the market place. I strongly believe that there is NO effort by Star Scientific to hide “side affects” from anyone using Anatabloc.
Hope the above helps.
Good luck,
Allan
Alan, Dr. Quirini said he was prohibited from posting anything from the medical portal because of Star Scientific legal prohibitions against doing so.
As for speculation that he saw data on a study that is pending peer review, I really hope star scientific isn’t posting non-peer reviewed data in their section for health care professionals. I think that’s bad science.
But MD’s out there every day write scripts for drugs with long lists of potential side effects and MOST patients end up with those Side Effects….I see only integrative MD’s and steer clear of pharma drugs if at all possible..
My mild complaint is a bit of constipation, but drinking extra water during the day and hot water with lemon before bed is correcting any issues…otherwise for the 2 months I’m doing good….and taking extra magnesium as I do anyway…how many MD’s out there tell patients about the magnesium deficiency issues in our population? joy
Tumeric Curcumin is also a reported anti inflammatory that I have used recently for a sore knee on the advice of a Chiropratic Dr who is also a Naturopath. I can now walk 18 holes of golf pain-free. It has the advantage of being 1/3 the cost.
The head of Star Scientific (STSI) has an unsavory past, see here: http://www.thestreetsweeper.org/undersurveillance/CIGX_Leader__Blowing_Smoke_While_Investors_Choke_
Much of the recent research on anatabine has been conducted by the Roskamp Institute, a financially-strapped research institute which is compensated by Star Scientific for their work on anatabine. This is not a reassuring source of unbiased information.
The anecdotal testimonies, however, are enough to give an optimist reason to give this a shot. Based on what I read here I bought a bottle today at GNC. The manager of the store says that the dosage recommendation has been changed from what the bottle says. He showed me the new promotional material which recommends 2 tabs 6x per day for someone 170-220 lbs. That’s a major annoyance, but it’s not the first time I’ve blown $100. I’ll report back in a week. Btw, I bought the last bottle in the shop, so maybe word is getting out.
My comment relates to your observation of no proof shown that Anatabloc is anything other than a bandaid. I have visible evidence. I have several autoimmune issues – type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, arthritic joint pain and Psoriasis. Other than insulin I take no other medicines. I used to take an Advil everyone morning for relief of the joint pain. I am a creature of habit and do not deviate from my routine. I eat and exercise no differently today than 10 years ago. I had damaged my knuckle with a hammer 5 years ago and prior to starting anatabloc the knuckle remained red, swollen and warm to the touch. My orthopedic Dr. was unable to treat and stated that I would need to live with the arthritic condition. The advil was the bandaid allowing me to get through the day. Since taking Anatabloc, the knuckle has returned to normal. All of my arthritic issues gone. Celiac issues have greatly improved after 30 years. Psoriasis greatly improved and dandruff condition is gone. The only difference in my routine is anatabloc and I no longer need the advil bandaid. This product is the real deal for me. I have been on for 12 months and indeed feel 10 years younger.
I appreciate you writing and I am happy you say anatabloc is helping you. While I am sure you are telling me the truth, what you say is basically a testimonial. that is not to to downplay the significance of what you say is happening but until peer reviewed scientific studies are published, I am still forced to conclude that there is no good scientific proof that this can occur. Maybe it does and maybe it doesn’t. I continue to hope better research is published and when it is I will update my review.
A friend of mine, a medical doctor, introduced me to Anatabloc. I am an active 64 year old male prone to over-exercise. I workout on a 3 days-on,1 day-off protocol of high intensity interval training. This is an intense training regimen that I have adapted from CrossFit (www.crossfit.com see my website @ http://www.thesamsonoption.com).
I am a physical education teacher and coach in a California high school. I have been taking Anatabloc for 7 weeks as part of a study my friend and selected patients of his are participating in. I was hoping for our American concept of success, instant results, but was disappointed. I noticed no significant changes in DMS or in workout longevity in my first or second week.
At 2 1/2 – 3 weeks I began to notice that something was different but couldn’t put my finger on what. By the middle of week 3 I had a marked improvement in recovery and willingness to follow my training protocol without having to talk myself into day-3.
Prior to taking Anatabloc I was not recovering like had over the last 2 years. I chalked it up to age and contemplated changing my workouts as well as the sequence of days. I noticed that each birthday came with a new physical surprise. I found myself constantly sore or felt like I had over-trained and was not recovering.
At 7 weeks I find that joint pain, particularly knees and shoulders, albeit not severe but constant, has significantly diminished, workout recovery and stamina are markedly increased, muscle soreness is akin to my 50’s, and my back, fused through the lumbar region, is becoming less painful and slightly more flexible.
Please feel free to contact me at my email for updates. I am due for blood work ups as per the study requirement.
In Him-Ruc1
Robert, thanks for chiming in and Im glad you are feeling results. Thats a heck of a website you got and since you mentioned crossfit, do take a look at this review of rhabdo I wrote, just in case nobody ever mentioned it to you
http://www.joe-cannon.com/rhabdomyolysis-personal-trainers-exercise-review-symptoms-negatives-eccentric-fitness-bootcamp/
Thanks for the info. I have studied rhabdomolysis and subsequently ere on the side of caution with my students. I want them to work hard but come back to work another day. Each of our WOD’s, Workout of the Day, has a novice, competitor, and elite protocol; scaled to beginners, intermediate, and advanced trainees. I cannot control on-line participation but continue to warn about over training. I will post a link to your article: it is clear and well done as well as necessary. Now, if I could heed my own advise. . . Ah, the wisdom of age.
Joe, Thank you and the others for the helpful suggestions. Just to clarify my message about the PT. PT gave me some good exercises and recommended meditation. I do them daily and believe both exercise and meditation give me the best relief. I will try to up dosage to 8 anatablocs a day as I’m over 225 lbs but in relatively good physical shape except for the back. I’ll post again later about results.
On Mary Shomon:

I have a hard time posting things here oftentimes…
Joy, thats likely because links sometimes go to spam esp strange looking links like what you posted above and if you posted something that somebody else also posted I try not to duplicate content.
JOE,
I am interested in what you have to say each time I Google something and find my way to your website. I was schooled to be a respiratory therapist and now spend some of my time helping people stop smoking so they can live their life without the troubles of that addiction.
I say this because my medical background gives me some good insight into so much of the science behind medications and some supplements. However, I am also a human that falls prey to advertising (maybe when we are in pain or sick we aren’t as careful to analyze what we are reading). I was sick for years with what my doctor finally figured out was Hashimoto’s thryroiditis. This is an autoimmune disease that finally killed my thyroid and now I take a thyroid supplement to replace what my body doesn’t make.
But since this is an autoimmune disease I have been warned that I am at a greater risk for other autoimmune diseases. My first reaction is to watch everything I eat and to make sure my food is as unprocessed as possible and that I stay clear from all the genetically modified food that has been coming out lately.
Now comes the human part of me, after I hear or read about some new product that has “helped” another hypothyroid sufferer (this time antabine) I tend to follow my emotions instead of my head (I guess both have their place). Which is why I write you, to thank you for doing the research on my behalf so that I can think before I plop down $100 without all the correct knowledge.
What your research has found is concerning to me; the tobacco company that makes this product, having to search for the actual building where it is made, as well as the people reporting problems with the “free” trial and immediate charges to their credit cards. I understand using animal studies as a beginning but I guess I was wrongly informed that an actual human phase 3 trial had been completed.
So, again I thank you for being my ‘brain’ at times when mine is being ruled by my emotions; it is in this state that so many fall prey to individuals out to make money only. I have no problem with people making money; my problem is with the ones who want to make it at the expense of our health and well being, especially when we are anxious or sick and willing to believe almost anything.
So, if I do decide to try antabine it will be because I have read all the information and made a clear decision; and if it works for me I will let you know in a follow up reply.
Mara, thanks for letting me know I show up so frequently for this topic! I feel your pain and struggles with this issue and I wish I could offer some advice. I dont know why it took years for your doctor to figure out you had Hashimoto’s disorder. Im no doctor but a simple blood test would show it.
I continue to be intrigued with the thyroid-anatabloc research and I really do hope they do large scale human trials. If you do try it, can I suggest you get your thyroid antibodies measured first and a month later. that would help tell if anatabloc was helping you or not.
Received my 2nd bottle A-Bloc this time unflavored. This version stopped my gas issue from the sucralose in the minted variety. So after 45 days I have had no major sciatica back pain as I was having for the previous 4 months. I do have what I will call a dull ghost feeling sometimes just to remind me of the harsh stabbing pain I used to get before I started using the Anatabloc. I
am running around and going up and down the stairs like I used to without any pain. I still take 2 Ibuprofen once in a while. That’s down from taking 6. I am 59 yrs old weigh 240 lbs. I am 6 ft tall and I am taking 2 Anatabloc 3 times a day. About every 6 – 8 hrs. Sometimes I take them with a lifesaver candy or mint to let them dissolve. This is my follow up from a previous post. I am very pleased with this product. I have noticed 1 or 2 other personal body functions that seem to be improving but I will report on that later if there is continued progress in those departments. PS. I do not invest in anything except myself.
Great overview Joe, wish I had found this blog earlier as I would have saved a ton of time doing the same research as you have so thoroughly reported on.
No doubt, there is much to be learned, but given my issues, I ordered product after verifying much of what you reported, and given the fact I have an open mind to trying natural alternatives to drugs for years, I placed my first order four months ago.
What I have experienced is the following. With my first issue being the usual aches and pains of getting older, 64 in my case, I found I was feeling more and more pain after long walks or physical activity from exercising, and in particular, being on my feet all day at conferences I attend, my ankles would be swollen for days after such events I attend.
Well, after three months of use, and my last conference where I had to stand for eight plus hours, no more swollen ankles or the same pain from standing in my lower back. Is this scientific, no, just a personal overview which to me was conclusive since I had not changed anything else I was doing. I am against any drugs, and stay away from even aspirin, so I am convinced there is more to Anatabloc than the mice studies to date.
Having pushed my physical activity to new higher levels, I have seen far less pain and shorter recovery time, and having had a bum knee since a motorcycle accident as a teen, I know pain and my limits, but amazingly, I have not been hindered by this knee even after recent move where I was lifting heavy objects I would always regret even when I last moved a dozen years ago.
Are these improvements due to Anatabloc, I don’t know for sure, but suspect it has improved my condition, so I will stay on it and see just how things go. Arthritis is a real threat for everyone who has had an active lifestyle as they age, and I am certain my aches and pains were increasing over the past five years, and if I can stop it, I am willing to try anything which is a safe alternative over drugs and pain relievers which I won’t consider.
Now here is where it gets interesting. I have been overweight for years and having tried every known weight loss product and diet on the market, nothing worked for me. I have always had problems, when I was skinny as a kid, no matter how much I ate, I would not gain weight, then as I got older and did gain weight, I couldn’t lose it no matter how much I tried or worked out. Strange, and given thyroid disease runs in family, I suspect I have a thyroid disorder impacting my metabolism, but never went to doctor to have my thyroid checked., I just resigned myself I was 30 lbs. overweight and figured I could live with it.
Long story short, not until I read your review that there were some claims of weight loss, so I may have discovered why I have lost 16 lbs. over the last three months while doing nothing different other than Anatabloc. Could this be the reason for weight loss? I had not been on a scale for years, but having seen my pants constantly falling down, I was curious. Sure enough, I have been dropping a couple pounds a week and did not associate it with Anatabloc until today reading your review.
As a side note, I was sent the new skincare product gratis as a thank you for being a customer for three months, and this new product is $299.00 retail. This blew me away having never received anything for free before from any company. In addition, this past months supply was increased to 300 tablets up from the 200 at no increase in cost??? What company gives you more product for free in the world of economic collapses? Now for the real kicker. I was going to be traveling for next couple months and called customer service to suspend my autoship. I had a pleasant experience and was offered an option to stop two months auto delivery and was given a $10.00 discount to continue when I return, which obviously I wanted to do anyway when I returned, so given this experience, I am impressed more than ever.
Thanks, Mike
Mike thanks. I’m inclined to think your weight loss may be due mostly to your greater level of physical activity but as long as it helped, I’m good with it 🙂
Please DO get your thyroid levels checked Mike. If you are really low in thyroid hormone it can lead to MANY problems down the road including heart disease and senility. Please get it checked.
Mike, that’s all good news from you and did you read the link from Mary Shomon who is an expert on the thyroid, she’s written books and has an online health letter and writes for many groups…she’s come out endorsing Anatabloc on the thyroid tests….I’d bet money you need thyroid support MILLIONS do, don’t get it or get inferior treatment…I’m been down that road….believe me. Since I’m taking Anatabloc, I’ve reduced my thyroid by 1/2 grain…
So, it’s all connected….
Joe,
My wife and I have taken Anatabloc for a year and a half. Results for me are the elimination of pain from an old joint injury, disappearance of mild peripheral neuropathy, and noticeable improvement in a subjective sense of general well-being. My wife has had a significant improvement in a chronic thyroid problem and a corresponding reduction in prescription medication dosage by her doctor, greatly reducing the side-effects from the prescription medication.
In the 2 months since you wrote your review there has been new publication of human clinical trials.
Will you be updating your review?
Thanks for your efforts, Ubu.
ubutranscendent I have google alerts set up for the research but have not seen anything new. what studies did I miss? please give me the names of the published studies.
Joy, I always enjoy reading your notes because I believe you are honest in your evaluations. I’ve only used Anatabloc for 2 months and I’m hoping for results. I currently take an aspirin in the am and one before bed and I still get muscle spasms due to inflammation. I’m hopeful that Anatabloc will help curb those inflammations and I will share my experience on Joe”s page. . I’m a big guy and maybe 2 pills 3 times a day isn’t enough. Any thoughts on dosage by a person’s weight? Also, I’ve had back spasms for over 30 years but xrays show no structural damage other than I have a spine that looks like an I with no curvature at all. Even my PT said that exercises probably won’t help because I don’t have any curve to my back.
Jay, just because your PT said exercise wouldn’t help, doesn’t mean it wont help – or help in other ways. I do hope you are doing some sort of physical activity. You said you are a “big guy” but I don’t know if that means you have a high percent of body fat or not. Body fat releases inflammation chemicals which might aggravate your muscle spasms – and cause other problems too. Weight loss – if you need to do it – could help. If you try Anatabloc I really do hope it helps you. But I must point out that that there is currently no proof that Anatabloc is anything more than a band-aide (in other words, it masks pain I see no good proof it improves/cures the condition).
Combine anatabloc with other healthy choices to get the most benefit.
Joe, MOST everything is a bandaid, but many bandaids don’t work, many do a lot of damage and I see Abloc as one that does no damage….unless one chooses to become a purist with foods, etc…than pain will live in our bodies…
The way I understand it, it works on reducing the body’s low grade chronic inflammation. I may be on it the rest of my life, I’ve had a lot of damage done to my body and a lot cannot be reversed, structure/alignment. But NOW, I’m walking better, sleeping MUCH better and taking less pain meds…how I’ll advance down the road, will unfold. I’m much older too, but so many have so much damage young or old…
JOy, I hear you. I just don’t want people to rely only on Anatabloc. Whatever it does, I’m sure people will feel better when they do other healthy things also. 🙂
Jay for the correct amount per the new guidelines you should get thru your shipment and now listed on the new bixes of 300 pills is the following
100-120 lbs.2 tabs 3times a day
121-170lbs 2tabs 4times a day
171-220 lbs. 2 tabs 5times a day
221lbs and over 2tabs. 6 times a day
They just came out with the new guide lines a few weeks a go ,probably due to more of the testing going on with the product! Hope this helps Frank
Jay, for me Anatabloc is the icing on the cake..I take a lot of other supps for years…magnesium is critical for relaxing the body/muscles…concentrate on meditation too to help relax the body….get some massages if you can, break up the spasms…..6 is probably not enough for you, go to 8 or 10 for a time….but one needs to do other things too, Anatabloc isn’t going to change everything, a body that is so tight and “broken” as mine has been for a LONG TIME….years of peeling the layers of damage….Vit B supps are good for relaxing too, getting off topic a bit and I’m not a doc, but have been using supps for 20+ yrs…and have a messed up body from OA, Fibro and hip surgery complications…so hope this helps some. joy
Jay, talking to my gf this morning who is not on Abloc but I’m talking to her about it, she has concern since there is Alz in her family genetics…she said this today:
Like you, I suspect A. could be HUGE! My last lecture for nursing credits mentioned nicotine as helping the brain.
Jeri
Mike L…just thinking about this, is there any idea how many out there taking Anatabloc out of the 300M+ in our population here….
I’ll bet it’s pretty low since SO MANY have no idea about it..
Joy, Not really. One time I read that over 100,000 had tried it but I wasn’t sure that was valid and couldn’t verify it. Their facebook page has 62,602 likes to there credit. It’s not likely you would vote to like something if you hadn’t tried it but it’s possible. Additionally not everyone that has tried it has gone to their facebook page. It’s fair to say that more and more are trying it each day.
Today I read about the scientific interest in their facial cream. Not my big concern but many have mentioned rosacea, acne and sunburn relief. Even laser “peels” relief. Users of Abloc tablets also have indicated success with rosacea, acne and even psoriasis. Before the cream people experimented with homemade ointments. My wife crushed anatabloc into aloe cream and we had luck with it on her rash and bee sting swelling. It all ties together under the “inflammation blanket”, “Inflammaging” and “anti-inflammaging”.
Last week their was a new U. S. patent application for anatabine as a tobacco additive/fortifier that lowered TSNA. That’s part of the bad stuff that cause tobacco related cancers. Star Scientific has a history of attempts to make tobacco safer.
Next we have to get the science all verified for Joe so he can get off the fence. Right Joe?
Mike L, no fence. I’m just stating the facts as they exist now.
I got that from you. 🙂 “Still, the scientist in me needs better proof than what I see so far. So, I’m hoping that people write and let me know if Anatabloc helped them or not. Right now, I’m on the fence.”
Joe, just thinking, for someone to be convinced of “anything” doesn’t that person need to experience whatever that thing is….. I gather you don’t “test” the products you post here yourself…
I can’t say how much I love kiwi’s if I never ate one…
Joy, I test a few things but so far have not tried anatabloc. won’t rule it out. Predominately though I like to stick to the science
Joe, I like science too and since there is so much science behind all the pharma drugs, why did I end up in the ER with a stomach ulcer from an anti inflammatory drug some yrs back…not to start any debate, for sure…but pharma and all their science can’t give us a drug without S/Effects…I could NEVER figure that one out. Perhaps it’s their plan, more drugs on top of drugs….
Joy sorry to hear about that. there are drugs that are not appropriate for everybody and sometimes even in the right people, bad things happen (because we are all different). Not to defend them or depricate what you went through but they do have more testing that supplements do. Because of that I can only go by the science
Gotcha, and I’ve been taking supps for 20+ yrs and no side effects EVER..one particular supp I’m going on 18 yrs of taking it and it has been lifechanging…so, we just see things differently, now thank goodness for advil which is a pharma drug, but now on Anatabloc, I take 2 less per day…which is HUGE for me, hope I’ll get to less in time…we’ll see…
Has anyone tried Anatabloc for relief from neurapothy?
I don’t see why not, Anatabloc addresses all inflammation
Connective tissue disorders and chronic inflammation
Connective tissue disorders and chronic inflammation cause direct and indirect nerve damage. When the multiple layers of protective tissue surrounding nerves become inflammed, the inflammation can spread directly into nerve fibers.
Wayne, I’ve got this about that but I didn’t put it on the list because it is not a first hand account.
“my aches are gone, 27 holes is no problem, and i have seen diverticulitus, rashes and neuropathy in feet all go away with 3 different users.”
Neuropathy is related to NF-kB transcription going haywire in the body. That would be right up Abloc’s alley. If I had it I’d try it but remember that there are those who claim no benefits among the many that do.
This just in today:
This is interesting the whole history of Anatabine testing which came out today.
