Update 3/10/23. What is skinny fiber and does it work? To me, the name skinny fiber is ironic because I thought all fiber was supposed to help people lose weight. I did some digging into Skinny Fiber and discovered that there is some research on some of its ingredients. That will be the focus of this unbiased review. Does it have a secret ingredient? People may have heard about the enzymes in Skinny Fiber. Do they help with weight loss? That will also be addressed in this review. This review will help you decide if Skinny Fiber is right for you. See the Skinny Body Max review too.
What Is Skinny Fiber?
Skinny Fiber is exactly what the name says: a fiber pill supplement that is touted to help with weight loss. There is research on some of its ingredients, and those clinical studies will be summarized below.
Skinny Fiber Research

Is there any clinical evidence showing Skinny Fiber really helps people lose weight? Searching the product website reveals no research studies on the product.
Likewise, searching the National Library of Medicine (Pubmed.gov) for “skinny fiber” and “skinny fiber weight loss” reveal no studies either.
Fortunately, for this review, there are weight loss studies on some of the ingredients in this supplement.

Other Ingredients
The product also contains these other ingredients:
- Gelatin capsule
- microcrystalline cellulose
- magnesium stearate
These additional ingredients likely play no role in the effects or benefits of Skinny Fiber. Because gelatin is the first ingredient listed, it makes up most of these ingredients.
Let's look at each active ingredient in Skinny Fiber separately.
Glucomannan
Glucomannan (also called Konjac root) is a fiber that helps people feel full. It's in many weight loss products I've previously investigated, including:
This fiber is added to weight loss supplements because there is indeed some research that shows glucomannan can help weight loss. Studies usually use about 1 to 3 grams per day. Two skinny fiber pills have a 1.15 grams total of its proprietary blend of ingredients.
Since glucomannan is listed first in the blend's ingredients, I take that to mean it is mostly glucomannan fiber.
For those who want to compare prices, here is glucomannan capsules and glucomann powder on Amazon.
Caralluma Fimbriata
This is a cactus-like plant, rumored to have appetite-suppressing effects that grow in India. The idea behind how it works is that chemicals in the plant are said to reduce chemicals in the brain that cause us to want to eat. That is the theory anyway.
The plant is sometimes called a “famine food” likely because it's used during times of famine when there is not much food to eat. Given that it might reduce appetite, some suspect it may also help weight loss. Does it?
Here's what the research says:
In one study involving 43 people, researchers noted that 1000 mg Caralluma fimbriata per day, given for 12 weeks, caused a 2.2-inch reduction in waist circumference relative to placebo and a decrease in the waist-to-hip ratio. Those taking Caralluma Fimbriata also appeared to have a decrease in the smell, taste, and look of food. That of course could lead people to eat less.
The people in this study also followed a lower calorie eating plan. People ate 500 fewer calories than normal. It's also interesting to note that both groups lost similar amounts of weight. Also, those taking Caralluma Fimbriata did not lose more weight than the placebo group.
In another study involving 50 men and women, those who received 1000 mg of Caralluma Fimbriata per day were noted to significantly reduce waist circumference and hunger levels compared to those who received a placebo. There was no clinical difference in body weight.
In this investigation, researchers saw that rats given Caralluma Fimbriata experienced less food intake and reduced body weight gain than rats that did not receive Caralluma Fimbriata.
In a small study conducted on 15 kids with a rare genetic disorder called Prader-Willi syndrome that causes excessive appetite, 1000 mg of Caralluma seemed to reduce appetite when given over a 10-week period. Even though this study lasted 10 weeks, the study does not mention if body weight was reduced.
On the flip side, a study published in 2015 that noted Caralluma fimbriata did not work. This study involved 89 overweight people who were randomly given either a placebo or 1000 mg of Caralluma per day for 12 weeks. Those taking Caralluma did not have any improvements in weight loss or reduction in appetite.

Chá de Bugre
Also called Cordia ecalyculata and Cordia salicifolia. The Skinny Fiber website says that Chá de Bugre can “support a healthy metabolism” and is an “appetite suppressant.” Is there any proof it does this?
No human evidence on Chá de Bugre and weight loss could be located. A mouse study published in 2017 noted that Cha de Bugre, both alone and when combined with Spirulina, reduced appetite in mice.
Another mouse study noted that acha de bugre did not reduce body weight or food consumption.
The Enzyme Blend
When Skinny Fiber first came out, its website said this about the enzymes:
“The biggest CHALLENGE to losing weight is that most of us are NOT getting enough enzymes from our food to properly DIGEST what we eat.“
That working has changed and they now say that:
“When we don’t get enough enzymes from our food, our bodies can’t properly digest what we eat, causing use to often have a weaker immune system and gain weight.”
But it's important to know that our bodies make enzymes. While there are enzymes in food, they are quickly digested in the stomach when we eat them. Might enzymes help someone with digestion issues? Maybe. But for healthy people, evidence that they help weight loss is lacking.
The label says that 2 Skinny Fiber pills contain 260 mg of the following enzymes:
- Amylase (carbohydrate digesting enzyme)
- Protease (protein-digesting enzyme)
- Lipase (fat-digesting enzyme
- Glucoamylase (sugar-digesting enzyme)
- Papain (protein-digesting enzyme)
- Cellulase (carbohydrate digesting enzyme)
- Bromelain (protein-digesting enzyme)
One thing to remember is that enzymes that are eaten are quickly destroyed by the stomach's acidity soon after they are consumed. Because of that, those enzymes don't get into the blood to do anything.
Enzymes are safe and won't hurt anyone. They might add a little bit of protein but as for helping with weight loss, it would take human studies to know for sure.
How Much Sodium?
If you looked closely at the label above, you saw that 2 capsules contained “5 grams” (5000 mg) of sodium, which the label also indicates is less than 1% of the Daily Value for sodium. But 5 grams is not 1% of the Daily Value for sodium. In fact, 5 grams is far
more than most people should be consuming. Most medical experts advise people to keep sodium to 1500 mg to 2300 mg (1.5 to 2.3 grams). If Skinny Fiber really has 5g, this would put people way over what they should be getting.
Could this be a typo and that the product really has only 5 mg of sodium rather than 5 grams?
If I am wrong, and Skinny Fiber really has 5 grams of sodium (in only 2 capsules), then people watching their sodium intake should be aware of this.
Skinny Fiber Active Ingredients
Looking at the research on each of the ingredients in Skinny Fiber, I see two ingredients that might help people lose weight:
And of those two ingredients, I feel glucomannan has the most evidence.
Ingredients With Limited Evidence
No human weight loss evidence could be located or the following ingredients in Skinny Fiber:
- Enzymes
- Chá de Bugre
This review will be updated as it becomes available if the evidence is found. If anyone is aware of the evidence for any of these ingredients, please share in the comments below.
Skinny Fiber On TV
On January 22, 2014, Skinny Fiber was featured on The Balancing Act, a TV show on the LifeTime Network. The interview featured the CEO of Skinny Fiber and a woman named Kayla, who lost 40 pounds while taking the product. Kayla has a Facebook page where she lists she is a Skinny Fiber distributor. Nothing is wrong with this, but it was not mentioned in the Balancing Act segment.
In the Balancing Act interview, when speaking about why Kayla was able to 40 pounds, the company CEO said:
“The reason that this product was able to work is because the enzymes were able to get her body in a condition where losing weight was possible.”
But, as already mentioned above, there is a lack of evidence that enzymes help weight loss. In fact, the very name – “Skinny Fiber” – tells you that it's the fiber -not the enzymes- promoting weight loss.
Think about it, they don’t call it “Skinny Enzymes” do they? The simple answer is that Skinny Fiber is a fiber supplement.
Segments seen in the Balancing Act are called “Branded Entertainment Segments.” In other words, the segments feature different brands (products) in a way that is meant to both inform and entertain people.
When I called The Balancing Act, I was told that while the Skinny Fiber segments are not “infomercials,” the companies featured on the show do pay a “pre-production fee” prior to being on the show.
I was told that companies that do not pay this pre-production fee would probably not be featured on The Balancing Act.
So how is this not an infomercial?
There is nothing inherently wrong with this partnership between companies and broadcast media. I bring this up for those who didn’t know what they were watching.
Protandim has also been featured on The Balancing Act, so see that review for more information.
Skinny Fiber 90-Day Challenge
There is a Skinny Fiber 90-Day Challenge. To quote Ben Glinsky, in the Balancing Act interview, the reason for the 90-day challenge is that:
“the enzymes that we have in this product have to build in your body and until your body gets healthy enough with those enzymes to be able to let go of that extra fat, losing weight is almost impossible.”
What enzymes is he talking about? He doesn’t tell us.
In my opinion, the reason for the Skinny Fiber 90-Day Challenge is to get people to do something on a regular basis. If they do something regularly, it becomes a habit.
If people spend 90 days trying to lose weight, many of those people will be successful to some extent. There is nothing wrong with it. It gives people goals to aim for, and that is a good thing.
Many weight loss companies offer a “challenge” that lasts about 90 days or so. In my opinion, this can all be traced back to the book Body For Life by Bill Philips, which got people to exercise, eat well, and take supplements made by EAS (Bill Philips was the owner of EAS).
It was a win for people because many lost weight, and it was a win for EAS because they made a lot of money from people who purchased their supplements. For those who are curious, the supplement company, EAS, was later purchased by Abbot Labs, a pharmaceutical company.
How Much Does The 90-Day Challenge Cost?
Let's do the math for those who are thinking about doing the Skinny Fiber 90-day Challenge:
1 Bottle of skinny fiber costs $59.95. 1 Bottle has 120 capsules which is a 2-month supply (if taking only 2 pills per day). If you take 4 pills per day, a bottle of 120 pills will last a month (120 ÷ 4 = 30 days).
If taking 4 capsules per day the 90-day challenge would cost:
59.95 X 3 months = $179.95 (shipping and handling might be extra).
I believe glucomannan is the active ingredient in Skinny Fiber. And Glucomannan is a lot less expensive.
How Many Pills Per Day?
Some distributors advocate taking 2 capsules daily Skinny Fiber at least 30 minutes before eating. This should be done with the biggest meals of the day. For some, this might be 4 pills per day. Take pills with 1 -2 glasses of water.
As with any new supplement, it's best to start with less than is recommended. For example, starting with only 1 pill per day for the first week, followed by 2 pills the following week, and so on until reaching what the company recommends.
How Much Water?
People need to take Skinny Fiber with enough water to swallow the capsules completely. This is to ensure they don't get stuck in the throat. Drinking water during weight loss programs is also advocated because it can also help curb appetite.
Water is good, although it should be remembered that drinking so much water drinking too much is not always the best. There is a medical condition called hyponatremia (high-poe-nay-tree-me-ah). Also called “water intoxication.” This condition results when too much water is consumed.
Basically, the water consumed dilutes the electrolytes in the blood. This can cause headaches, fatigue, confusion and even loss of consciousness. In rare cases, people have died from hyponatremia. This very rare condition is mentioned not to scare anyone, but to rather give people something to think about if they encounter advice that places an unusually high emphasis on drinking water while taking weight loss supplements.
As a rough estimate, aim to drink half your body weight in water per day. So, for someone who is 180 pounds, this would be 90 oz per day. Looking at the color of your urine can also give an indication too. Yellow urine might mean you are becoming dehydrated.
While the urine test is popular, it should be remembered that the vitamin riboflavin can also make urine look yellow too. Those who are taking multivitamins should check how much riboflavin is present if using the urine test for hydration. Skinny Fiber does not have riboflavin.
Does It Contain Caffeine?
Skinny fiber has no caffeine or other stimulants. It is basically a fiber pill supplement.
Does It Contain Gluten?
Skinny Fiber appears to be gluten-free.
Is It Organic?
There is no mention of whether or not Skinny Fiber is organic.
Does Skinny Fiber Contain HCG?S
Skinny Fiber does not contain the HCG hormone or any other hormones. Here is the review of HCG diet research for those who want to know more about this.
Skinny Fiber vs. Metamucil

As stated above, it is believed that glucomannan (konjac root extract) is the main active ingredient in Skinny Fiber. Metamucil is another fiber supplement that is marketed to help people lose weight. Metamucil contains a fiber called psyllium. As mentioned in the Metamucil review, there are studies that psyllium fiber can help with weight loss too.
So what's better: Skinny Fiber or Metamucil? At this time, there are no head-to-head- clinical studies comparing these products to each other. There are also no studies comparing glucomannan fiber to psyllium fiber either for weight loss.
Could the other ingredients in Skinny Fiber make it better? Of course, it's possible. But that would take clinical studies to prove.
Skinny Fiber Customer Complaints
When looking at online complaints about any product, ask yourself if what you are reading is reasonable or not. For example, someone might complain that they did not receive a product on time. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the person complaining and ask yourself if what they are saying would be a problem for you.
The Skinny Fiber Lawsuit
In the comments section below, I was made aware of a lawsuit involving Skinny Fiber. It appears to involve another company called Master Strategies LLC which it said, owns the trademark to Skinny Fiber. Instead of going into detail here, I'll just refer you to the bloggers website to read more about this. Update. It appears the judge has dismissed this lawsuit.
Skinny Fiber Side Effects
Skinny Fiber is likely very safe for most healthy people. That said, here are a few things to consider if you are not healthy. This list is not complete.
- Stop taking Skinny Fiber at least 2 weeks before having surgery.
- Speak to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Drink sufficient water to completely swallow the pills. This is to reduce the chance of choking if the capsules get stuck in the throat. This is a remote chance but it should be kept in mind. Remember, glucomannan expands when it comes in contact with liquids.
- One mouse study noted that at very high levels, Chá de Bugre might break chromosomes. That would be bad if it did because it might lead to conditions like cancer. However, another mouse study noted that Cha de Bugre – both alone and when combined with Spirulina – did not have any effect on chromosomes. Better research should be done to resolve this issue.
Skinny Fiber And Breast Feeding?
Women who are breastfeeding to speak to their doctor about the supplements they take. This is because of the possibility that some supplements may pass from the mom to the baby in the breast milk. It's probably wise to not use this product while they are breastfeeding.
Who Makes Skinny Fiber?
The company is called Skinny Body Care and its website is SkinnyBodyCare.com. This website now redirects to another site called Valentus which has its own dietary supplement line. Update. The Skinny Body Care website no longer appears to be working.
The company address was 341 W 6100 S Murray, UT 84107. MS #1420.
423 Bussen Underground Rd St. Louis, MO 63129.
It's not known if these addresses are still valid.
How to Return Skinny Fiber?
The contact page of the product website does not list a phone number. They do, however, list this US address: 423 Bussen Underground Rd St. Louis, MO 63129. This address corresponds to a company called United Fulfillment Center. This company may take orders and ship Skinny Fiber to customers. The phone number to the fulfillment center is 314.894.3200.
This address is different than the original address found for this product: MS #1420 341 W 6100 S Murray, UT 84107. For those who purchased Skinny Fiber from a distributor, it's best to get return information from the distributor rather than just send the product back for a refund. There may be extra steps needed to return the product.
Does Skinny Fiber Work?
Skinny Fiber is a fiber supplement. Because it uses a type of fiber that has been shown to help weight loss, I would not be surprised if some people said it worked. The main active ingredient in Skinny Fiber is likely glucomannan (konjac fiber). Depending on cost, that might be the lesser expensive way to go.
Heres glucomannan/konjac on Amazon
Joe, why must you constantly refer to SF as SK?? Are you a scientist, a Medical Dr.? Or are you just trying to rain on the many people’s parade who this has truly been a godsend? Bet you wish you had discovered SF??!!
Sissy, I will say you are right and I mistakenly refer to SF “SK” sometimes. I probably do this subconsciously because SK are the first letters in skinny. Ill make a note not to make this mistake anymore. To be fair you also had a typo in your comment (which I corrected) so don’t judge me too harshly.
if you read my about page you will see I have a BS in chemistry and biology and a MS in exercise science. I dont see how showing the research on the ingredients in SF is raining on anybody’s parade.
I’ve actually known about glucomannan for several years before SF was on the scene. I covered glucomannan in my book Nutritional Supplements What Works and Why.
Joe..I’m glad I read your review.. I started to order SF but didn’t due to the price.. Your review was the first on Google..Thanks for the information… It pays to read the reviews..
Paula, glad you found me so easily 🙂
I would like to comment on skinny fiber. I stuck with the product for 50 days. Took 2 before lunch but never felt we’ll enough for my dinner dose. Caused a dull headache I was told was from not drinking amounts but I drank over 90oz a day.
Also had two instance my throat swelled up completely. Everyday felt the swelling in my throat but bearable, minus those two days. I also experienced a flu like day which I was told was detox. Stuck it out to let my body adjust.
Also had bladder issues running to pee every half hour. Not a pleasant experience. I might try to take one pill before lunch and one before diner, as now that I have been off it for a week my appetite came back double!
I did have positives with the appetite but no weight loss. I hope this helps as there are so many positives out there. Doesn’t work for all!!
Danielle, your throat swelling up is not a sign of detox and honestly I am quite surprised that the skinny fiber distributor would make a medical diagnosis about something that I feel is quite serious.
While I cant be sure, sometimes its possible to drink so much water that bad things can happen. This is called hyponatremia (high-poe-nay-tree-me-ah). headaches might be a sign of this. I’m totally guessing here because 90 oz per day might not cause this, unless, maybe, if you drank it all at once. While its usually only seen in high performance athletes (think marathon runners etc.) I’ve heard of a few people who were not athletes.
Regardless of any of this, your throat closing concerns me very much. If that happened to me, I would not take SK again.
Thank you so much for this review. The product is newer and in searching I have been finding not to many negatives! Became depressed that it wasn’t working for me, like what is wrong with my body? The headaches, lethargy, throat swell, potty running I dealt with because I so desperately wanted to loose weight.
I lost 15lbs prior by eating clean and purchased this product to help me if I “cheated” during the summer months. I do not think I will continue to use this product any longer.
In your research, have you found a good appetite suppressant? Coming off this product has made me crazy hungry! I am currently back to eating clean and working out.
Hi Danielle, I’d start with just glucomannan powder. its less expensive and I think this is one of the main active ingredients in most fiber supplements. Here is the power form on Amazon people seem to like
A side effect is throat swelling. Nervous that’s what cause my throat swelling from sf!
Im not sure what ingredient in sk that may have caused it. Ive never heard anybody say that before. Its best to steer clear of it just to be safe.
I take Skinny Fiber and have lost 16lbs so far. I am not trying to lose it fast, I am learning to eat healthier and with the help of Skinny Fiber I can do this. I will be able to keep the weight off.
We have been told that in January, Lifetime will be having the company on the balancing act for the 90 day challenge!! Then maybe this will be cleared up. But for now what do any of you have to lose, it comes with a 30 day money back guarantee!!
the people you see in the pictures are not actors, they are real down to earth people like you and me! If you think this is a miracle worker then I’ve got some land to sell you. I do not diet, I just eat different than I did, I haven’t been able to exercise because I had to have a pacemaker.
And yes I will go back to exercising only because it gets me out of the house and around other people. It does make you feel full but could you stuff yourself, well yes you can , and if you don’t have a mind changer when you order it, you will never, no matter what you do, lose weight!
I know people who have had the bypass, and the other one(sorry name of it just left me) but I have seen them get just as fat if not fatter on those . It is all in what you want to do with your life! Skinny Fiber doesn’t claim to do anything but help make you feel full and lose weight.
The most places I see people lose it is in their face, under their chin, and their stomach!! Look at the photos again, if they do not look like the same people then ask for more information on them, heck they might even call you!!! We are not scared nor ashamed of our business.
I will be proud when I reach the heights that some of the others have reached, but I know that I am helping people with their weight problem and as long as they help themselves they will lose it and keep it off. And by the way I am 66 years young and have not had so much fun posting and talking to people in a long time. LOSING WEIGHT AND GETTING PAID FOR IT!!!
Sue, congrats on losing 16 lbs.
does skinny fiber care offer education on how to eat better?
Will the Lifetime network be doing any research on Skinny Fiber? when will that be airing?
Yes. Skinny Body Care offers healthy diet & exercise tips for people participating in the 90 Day Challenge. They have a back office where they can track their results and there tips in regard to diet and exercise posted.
The show on Lifetime approached Skinny Body Care about being on their show. They researched several companies and products and felt Skinny Body Care was the best fit for their audience.
Thanks Coach, appreciate that!
There is in fact a customer care number listed on the website, there is also an email as well as a live chat available to assist with any concerns.
There are many many many distributors that offer weight loss support and how to eat healthier all the way around. I do not personally know any who encourage people to continue to eat unhealthy. I know in my support group I post healthy low fat, low carb, low sodium, paleo, vegan and vegetarian recipes. I do however stress that if you eat anything unhealthy to do so in moderation. I have work out challenges and clean eating challenges. I don’t sell to make the money I sell to help people.
Skinny Fiber will be featured beginning Jan 2014 on the Lifetime Network show mentioned. I’m sure they have done their research.
CB, thanks I’ll be looking forward to seeing it!
If you are forced to eat healthy all the time you will feel deprived. I enjoy an unhealthy food from time to time
Kyle, I think its about how you view food. If you know the healthy food is helping you on the inside then that might help people enjoy it more. That said, I think its ok to splurge once in a while. Its about what we do most often that counts.
Kyle everyone does.. It’s not forcing you to eat healthy all the time. I don’t know a single person that doesn’t enjoy bad food from time to time. It’s about moderation. We do 7 10 and 21 day challenge where we remove certain types of unhealthy food from our diet for that time frame. No one is forced to participate it is optional.
With Skinny Fiber I can indulge myself from time to time and not freak out that OMG all that hard work I’m going to gain it all back. I eat bad foods i moderation, I enjoy them, I don’t deprive myself. My point was more you can’t eat junk, fried foods, sugar, sodas and fast food ALL the time and expect there to be any magic pill to make you lose weight while doing that
CB, while Im glad its working for you, I think people can indulge from time to time regardless of whether they use SF or not, as long as calories eaten overall are not too much for the week.
You are reading wayyy more into what I said than I intended. Of course anyone can indulge in moderation. As i said before I have PCOS which makes those indulgences a lot harder for me.
CB, I do apologize for that. Because I really am something of a science geek in real life, I pick up on words like miracle, amazing etc. no offense intended.
I understand that… however I said there is NO MIRACLE PILL

NotBuyingit, wow those are very specific claims! For example, to say skinny fiber “reduces cholesterol” is a drug claim, which is illegal to say under the dietary supplement health and education act (DSHEA). I don’t think the Skinny Fiber company would be happy with that distributor making such specific claims about their product.
Hey skinny distributors. I’m curious, does the company education distributors what can and cant say about the product?
During a recent training event, Distributors were given direction about making claims in regard to health. Those types of claims should not be made since Skinny Fiber is a dietary supplement and not a drug. The reps will receive more training on how to market Skinny Fiber as being dietary supplement that helps with weight loss.
Coach, thanks I’m glad to hear that 🙂
Although I will not be buying Skinny Fiber as I think it is over-priced, they do name a couple of enzymes in the video. I know amylase is one for sure. But, like you said, there is no evidence that these enzymes are doing any good. I know we used amylase in biology class for a lab, but can I remember what it was used for? NO lol
Brennamarie85, good memory on amalyase! It’s a carbohydrate digesting enzyme. Carb digestion actually starts in the mouth because we have amalyase in our saliva.
Bernie Madhoff would be proud of this pyramid scam sorry scheme..
Joe, anybody can make up any name they choose on Amazon 🙂 j/s My friend ordered some from there and they were nothing like the pills I had ordered from the actual site, luckily it was Amazon and they helped her get it returned. I suffer from tachycardia and almost every supplement out there makes my heart go crazy…even green tea, which I never exected til I tried it.
I took the ingredient list to my doctor before I ordered and I was given the go ahead…and haven’t had a single problem. The rep I ordered from is very honest and open (and even helps people go together in group orders, splitting the larger packs which btw if you do makes it as cheap as many you get in Wal-Mart and for me much more effective).
Anyhow, I’ve been on it 2 months and love it. It’s helped with issues outside of just weight loss, but I have lost 24 pounds
Mary, Ive never sold anything on Amazon so I didn’t know sellers could make up their own names. So the seller known as ‘skinny fiber” on Amazon is not the maker of Skinny Fiber huh. That’s interesting. I would have thought that Amazon would try to stop that sort of thing.
I’m glad I found you! Thank you so much for your review on Skinny Fiber. Somewhere I read that its ingredients are very similar to the ones in PGX, which is a lot cheaper. Have you ever done a review on PGX? Also, do you have a website where you list all your reviews? Thanks again for your time and effort in helping people! I’m curious about your background and credentials. Your reviews sound much more credible than the company’s. Do you have a science background?
Hi Mary Anne, I’m glad you found me. Yes this website has ALL of my supplement reviews. There are currently over 150 supplement reviews on this site (SupplementClarity.com).
Yes I do have a science background. I have a BS in chemistry and biology and a MS in exercise science. I’ve been investing/writing about supplements for about 15 years. Before this site was created, I wrote a book called Nutritional Supplements What Works and Why.
I’ve listed some things about me on my About Page and you can read more about me at my personal site Joe-Cannon.com
About PGX – this is another name for glucomannan, one of the main ingredients in Skinny Fiber. Glucomannan has several names including Konjac root. Different supplements list it as different things 🙂
Hi Joe,
I once heard a dr on tv (Dr. Red Duke) say, “If someone doesn’t do everything possible including shouting from the highest mountain that their weightloss product is a miracle then don’t believe it.” I’ve stuck by those words all my adult life and they have helped me to not believe the hype. Thanks for everything Joe!
You’re welcome Lorelie 🙂
There are other higher fiber products that work great. .I would recommend Fibra Kania. It comes in a powder form (more like small grains) tastes better mixed with orange juice. It helps reduce cholesterol. ..etc kinda the same benefits skinny fiber lists.
I love this product I just honestly hate drinking it I prefer taking 10 pills of it lol. Im not a rep, nor a promoter for this product. Its made in Mexico and the only place ive found it is at a health food store in Tijuana. Last time I took it 2 years ago I lost 20 pounds in 2 months. I will be starting it again very soon. This product goes for about $22 for a large jar…worth the try , it honestly works great 🙂
My distributor also stated that SF sold on AMAZON is not the same product. Yes, it has same appearance on the outside of the container making it look exactly the same, but it’s the capsules that are different. Pictures of the two different capsules were posted on FB. The darker capsule from AMAZON is a fraud, while the lighter capsule is the real thing. At least that’s whats being said on FB.
tropicalparadise2013, while I would not rule out the possibility of counterfeit SK, the seller listed for SK on amazon is Skinny Fiber.
I’m just stating what’s being said regarding Skinny Fiber sold on Amazon from all FB distributors. That it is NOT the same product. As far as the product itself. It has not helped me in the least with weigh loss or decreasing my hotflashes. Instead, it has caused me to gain weight. And that right there is enough to put an end to SF. The sad thing is, is that I still have 2 unopened bottles left. What a waste of money!
tropicalparadise2013, I wonder if the SK distributors are saying that the Amazon skinny fiber is fake, to increase the odds of people buying from an SK distributor? Im no expert on selling on Amazon but I find it hard to believe Amazon would let a seller call themselves “skinny fiber” if they were not in fact the company.
Amazon does not have you to provide any proof of what you choose to nickname yourself when you set up as a seller. There are some legitimate distributors that sell on Amazon HOWEVER, Skinny Body Care does not allow it’s distributors to sell on places like Amazon or Ebay for a discounted price for a few different reasons.
There have been many occasions that people have purchased on Amazon thinking they were getting the real thing and were actually receiving counterfit pills that made them ill. People have even gone as far as creating “trial packets” which Skinny Body Care also does not sell. They do however offer a 30 day money back guarantee.
I researched Skinny Fiber for many months before taking it as I have PCOS which is a metabolic disorder and even went as far as ordering and taking the bottle of capsules to my dr. My dr. reviewed the ingredients, researched them thoroughly and when he was done came back to me and told me he thought the product would be a fantastic thing to try out.
In the 3 months that I have consistently taken it I have lost almost 30 lbs over 56″ total off of my body and a total of 4 pant sizes and that was with a break in taking them because of a surgery I had to have. Is it for everyone? No probably not. Do I know exactly why it works the way it does? No and I don’t claim to.
What I do know is it has worked for me, it has worked for several friends that have tried it and it is working for my dr.s mother and wife. I am now a distributor but not because of some of the ridiculous claims that were made in other places in these comments. I am a distributor because I found a product that finally worked for me, a company that strives for nothing but HONESTY from its distributors.
The photos are NOT stock photos they are photos from distributors and customers and yes all distributors are allowed to share them. We do not ever intentionally misrepresent the product or anyone’s results and the company is VERY strict on this.
I love that Skinny Body Care has given me an opportunity to help other people get healthier. I have a weight loss support group. I post tons of healthy recipes, I research any product that any of my members ask that I do and I do so unbiased. I don’t care what people use to lose weight as long as it’s not endangering their health I just know what works for me.
CB, other SF distributors have also said they researched SF for months before trying. Can you show me some of the research/insights you turned up and what about that research said to you that skinny fiber would help you?
The research is contacting an talking to the people, WHO ARE REAL, who have the courage to post their before an after pics for all to see. Skinny Fiber DOES NOT claim to help with hot flashes, acid reflux, diabetes, etc. it is the REAL people who has used it that say they are now off their diabetes meds, blood pressure meds, etc since taking the product.
THAT people is how you do research, not sit on the internet searching different names an then piecing this part an that part together to create a BLOG because that is basically all this is…..a BLOG.
Robin, I’m guessing you are taking a shot at me personally with your comment about “a BLOG,” which is fine, but I must disagree with you 100% by your idea of what is “research.” There is NO research on skinny fiber. You only have testimonials to tell me skinny fiber works. I showed people published, peer reviewed research on the ingredients in skinny fiber.
Fact. Skinny Fiber has ZERO published peer reviewed research it works better than glucomannan
Fact. Testimonials do not carry the same weight as published peer reviewed research
Fact. Skinny Fiber has a better business bureau rating of “F”
With all respect to people who it has worked for, nobody has shown me any proof that SF is more than an expensive glucomannan product.
Actually Robin, what you claim to be research does not take into account variables or the placebo effect. The power of the human mind is incredible. Peer reviewed studies do use a placebo to separate this phenomenon from the actual product benefits. These studies also eliminate as many variables as possible or at the very least make note that the variable was present and may or may not have had an impact.
Finally the study is reviewed by the studiers’ peers to make sure it was conducted correctly. Yes there is a lot of fiction on the internet and yes its easier to find but peer reviewed studies and other forms of fact can also be located on the internet by those who care to take a little extra time to find them.
Hi Joe.. I totally agree with this statement. It’s just like hairdressers telling you that the shampoo you find in grocery stores are not the same product you find in salons. Personally, I think it’s SF distributors trying to make more money, even though they are told not to. I appreciate your research.
My boyfriend got pulled in on FB with “good recipes” and found the SF link, saw the before & after photos and bought the 3 get 3 offer. We will give it a try, Only because he’s already bought it. I think everyone’s body handles everything different. Who knows, maybe it will work for us, I will let you know.
I also find it funny that people who did not buy this to loose weight actually gained weight… I’m curious about this… Anyway, thank you again for your research. If I wanted testimony I would have gone elsewhere.. I was looking for a breakdown of ingredients and you did a great job… Honoree
DuchessJordan, you are very welcome and for what its worth, I do hope it helps you and your BF.
I just saw Skinny Fiber on Facebook and also did a search on the ingredients listed on their website. There was some useful info on WebMD. Although WebMD had no info on Cha` de Bugre, they did have 3 reviews from people who took it. All 3 said it caused migraines or uncomfortable fogginess.
WebMD had some other health benefits listed for Glucomannan that intrigued me though…they stated it helped with: increased circulation, vascular disease, certain heart conditions as well as lowering blood sugar.
As for Caralluma, I wasn’t liking the side effects listed.
Great review! Your info on the company itself really threw up a red flag for me. Glad you were Google’s #1…lol
Ana Little, thanks for the heads up on the Web MD info. I will take a look at it – its nice to be #1 🙂
I just wanted to say a few things. First, I just started taking SF about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I was completely stalled in losing weight. I have had this problem for the last couple of years where I could not lose more than 10 lbs on any diet. I had even gone to a weight loss clinic where they put me on phentermine. I had managed, with drugs, to stall at 12 lbs instead of 10. Woo hoo!!!
I took SF with no illusions that it would help…it did. It took about a week before I managed to start losing, but I have now lost about 5 lbs while on it. I also saw someone leave a comment about stock photos. I will say that I joined as a distributor (after I saw that it was working) and I was on a page just last night where we were showed a pic of a man who had lost a considerable amount of weight. They were warning distributors to TAKE THIS DOWN because he did not lose his weight through SF and they didn’t want to lie about it.
It had been mistakenly sent around, and they wanted it off all the sites. This was in a private group that only distributors see, but they wanted what was on our sites to be truthful. That says more to me than hearsay that “they are all stock photos” (which I know for sure is untrue).
Finally, I have read some studies on enzymes, and when I find my book I will get back to you on them. They were not talking about enzymes and weight loss, rather it was more concerned with kids with ADHD, Aspergers, and other disorders. They have added digestive enzymes to these kids diets with great results.
It seems that if we don’t make enough enzymes (whether from bad diet or whatever) adding those enzymes can only help (even in weight loss). But, since I don’t have those studies in front of me, I will refrain from continuing until I do.
As for the price….$2 a day…..if you buy just one bottle. I have gone to GNC and paid almost that much for one meal replacement bar. If you have walked into your local health food store, I think you will see that it is among the more reasonably priced supplements.
Now, I know that I am no one, and have given you nothing more than my opinion, but as far as I can see, opinion has flown freely on this site, so here is just one more.
wvsigngal, thanks for sharing your thoughts. While I did try to keep my review to science, I did say that I didnt rule out how SK might help some people lose weight. I did think it had more to do with 2 of its ingredients but I can understand how some might prefer a prepacked supplement as this would be more convenient.
Im curious what SK distributors feel about the mouse study linking Chá de Bugre to chromosome damage? It really is just a mouse study (that used a LOT of Chá de Bugre) and who knows if that is even relevant to people or not. But, is there any talk of taking Chá de Bugre out of SK esp since there is no published peer reviewed studies that it helps weight loss?
Again, just curious.
Thanks for the reply. I can’t reply thoroughly right now, but I will answer one question. The chromosome study in mice that are taking a huge dose. My dog got deathly sick from chocolate, but I definitely will not give up chocolate because of it! I have not heard anyone talking about the study (I did see the study when I myself was studying SF before taking it….yes, some of us really don’t go in completely blind), so I can’t tell you how others react to it, but mice and humans are different, and the doses are so different that this study doesn’t seem relevant in the big picture. Of course, again, that is my opinion alone.
Yes I mentioned that the Chá de Bugre / chromosome study used a LOT of that ingredient – 2000 mg per kilogram of body weight. As I said I dont know what that means to people. Can you show me evidence that Chá de Bugre helps weight loss in humans?
So glad I found this review on SF, was seriously considering it, but the price was holding me back. I’m on three distributors pages for the recipes, tips, and support. They all use SF and post none post the same success stories. Lots of folks are saying how much they have lost in pounds and inches, but they all are dieting and exercising as well. Anytime you cut down and exercise you are going to lose weight. Anyway, thanks for doing the review. It saved me some money.
Thanks Donna!
I can assure you they are all real people — I am the top rep in the company and do most every before and after of our customers !!
I have 20+ years in the health and nutritional supplement industry—researched for 4 months before I took the chance- YES big skeptic!!!!– But Skinny Fiber works for more people than any other product I have tried or even sold in all the health and nutrition stores I managed owned.
Skinny Fiber really has helped me finally lose weight after gaining from thyroid disease and pre-menopause! I am also just about pain free from arthritis— Fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease with sciatic nerve damage!! Before SF I dieted and exercised a lot and still could not lose a pound!!!
With my issues took like 4 weeks to lose- but had great effects in other areas right from the start!!! With SF no diet or exercise and I have gone from a tight 14 to mostly size 10. Have lost 4 inches from my waist and do not have painful IBS anymore. I have more energy and now I am going to start working out–oh yeah–I did not even change my diet or work out to lose it! It took me 4 months to finally give in and take the chance–with the 30 day money back guarantee I had nothing to lose if it didn’t work!!
Now my whole family uses it–Dad is almost 85 and his diabetes is finally under control.
My Mom’s cholesterol went from 317 to 244 in 2 months with Skinny Fiber and
2 of my sisters no longer need meds for migraines!!
I am now off my thyroid meds and take no pain pills!
princessjacklyn, While I can see how losing weight would reduce cholesterol levels and help reverse type II diabetes (its the weight loss and not SK that does this) I cant see how weight loss – or skinny fiber – can reverse a low thyroid (hypothyroidism). Most cases of this are due to an autoimmune issue. Yes weight loss might reduce inflammation and in theory that might have some effect on the immune system but I cant find any proof that it happens. Since you did some research on SK can you show me studies linking weight loss to improved thyroid function?
Joe, thanks for setting the record straight re: hypothyroidism. As an auto-immune condition it is mutually exclusive from one’s diet (except, perhaps in the case of ingesting large quantities of seaweed or other iodine rich foods). For a ‘health’ practitioner to even make that claim calls into question her entire ‘testimonial’.
It Is What It Is, yes its odd to me also – and somebody else also just said SK helped hypothyroidism. I don’t get it. hoping somebody can show me evidence.
My Dr was also unsure how it helped but do not need meds– not going to question it– I have never felt better — I really do believe the absorption of our nutrients when taking skinny fiber has made the difference– I am not trying to sell anyone — But have made it my mission– vowed at the age of 8 years being teased for being fat- to share something that works wonders for me and my family— Not going to question it just love the difference in me and my entire family!!!
princessjacklyn, Its never nice when people get teased about their weight. Its good to have a mission in life isn’t it 🙂
Yes it does feel good to know I am making a difference 🙂 thank you!
“The Use of Konjac Glucomannan to Lower Serum Thyroid Hormones in Hyperthyroid” Azezli AD et al., Journal of the American College of Nutrition. 26(6), 663-8. 2007.
In this study the investigators explain that in persons with hyperthyrodism, there is often excessive circulating or peripherally stored thyroid hormone, which leads to continued symptomology, despite prescription drug treatment (such as antithyroid drugs). In these cases, bile acid sequestrants, such as cholestiramine, the same drug used to bind cholesterol in the gut and draw it out of the body to lower blood cholesterol levels, is also useful for blocking the gut-liver exchange of thyroid hormones and thus reducing blood cholesterol concentrations (and elevation of symptoms).
With this in mind, these investigators looked at the use of glucomannan, the most viscous soluble dietary fiber found in nature, that is also used to lower blood cholesterol, to lower blood thyroid levels in persons with excess thyroid found in the gut-liver circulation.
What they found was that in 48 patients with hyperthyroid disease, after two months, has significantly lower thyroid hormones (T3, T4, FT3, FT4) that persons who took a placebo.
Thus, the conclusion was that glucomannan can be used as a safe and effective natural adjunctive treatment (i.e., used along with oral thryoid-reducing meds), for hyperthyroid diseases.
Now, with this said, you might think that is has the potential to lower thyroid levels in euthryoid or hypothroid (normal or low) persons. But this is incorrect. The reasoning being, as explained above, in persons with hyperthryoidism, there is excess thyroid spilled out into the gut, but in normal and low thyroid cases, this does not occur. Thus, if you have normal to low thyroid levels, you are not at any risk of lowering your thyroid levels if you use glucomannan.
princessjacklyn, thanks for that study. So were you hyperthyroid and thats why you said SK helped your thyroid issues?
Can I also point out that this is still just about glucomannan….Which is not $60 a month.
Skinny Fiber is a wonderful product and I personally use it. It does have health benefits and it does help you loose weight.. Have you tried the product yourself? Many of my friends take it and are having wonderful results. I would do more homework on it before i posted all these facts you think you know
another friend posted about this page. Sounds like someone who is burnt on it……..I know it works I see it working and I wont waste my time reading crap like that.
Ladybird, So if somebody says SF doesn’t work for them then, then you discount their testimonial. How logical is that since all SF sellers tell me about is testimonials that it works.
If SF works for you then I say great, but don’t disparage others who may not have had the same results as you say you did.
Hi , I also googled SF reviews & yours was the very first one on the list.
I wanna say thank you because you saved me money.Last night I was seriously about to order it from a “friend” on FB. This is the second time I have almost ordered it and stopped myself. I wanted to read about it. I thought her pics didn’t look right. And she always advertises recipes for high fat desserts on her fb page.
If I sold a weight loss product shouldn’t I promote a healthy eating life style too.
I really appreciate your article & that you reply to the comments.
I’m just gonna join the gym with my husband. Maybe get me a trainer there too 🙂
Moria, thanks for the feedback – nice to know I ranked #1 in Google 🙂
As an aside, If you get a trainer at the gym, be sure to ask him/her who they are certified by -but don’t accept the letters (ACE, NASM etc.) ask them what those letters stand for. They should be able to tell you in 1 second. if they cant, then walk away. Its not fool proof but that’s my “1 step test” for how to pick a personal trainer. 😉
Who knows if it’s the same facebook person, but the one that I know has 1428 “memebers” on her facebook page, and is always posting high fat desserts. Hmmmm… I wonder…
Hey. Looks like I found your review 3 days late. I’m just wondering if you have done any researching on the garcinia cambogia? Can I mix these? I mean mix the SF with the GC?
Hi Dani, I have a whole review on garcinia cambogia (click the link). As a rule Id stick with just one supplement at a time to cut down on any side effects that might occur. since you already have SK, Id say try it for a week or so. You’ll know by then if its helping or not. If it helps – or doesn’t – let me know.
Here is the list given…
Enzyme Blend (Digestive Enzymes)
Skinny Fiber also has an Enzyme Blend that consists of Amylase Powder, Protease Powder, Lipase Powder, Glucoamylase Powder, Papain Powder, Cellulase Powder, Bromelain Powder
Amylase Enzyme breaks down carbohydrates into energy.
Protease Enzyme helps with the digestion of proteins.
Lipase Enzyme helps with fat digestion.
Glucoamylase Enzyme breaks down starch to glucose.
Papain Enzyme helps break down proteins.
Cellulase Enzyme helps breaks down plant fiber.
Bromelain Enzyme helps digest protein and anti-inflammatory.
Janice, Thanks for the heads up on the enzymes in skinny fiber! Few things about them that occurred to me:
Amalyase – we make it. its actually in our saliva so we start digesting carbs in the mouth.
Protease – we make that too.
Lipase – we make that too.
Cellulase – we don’t make this enzyme if we did, we would be able to digest – and absorb -the energy (calories) in fiber-rich foods (we could even digest paper!). If that so, then the question becomes, does the cellulase in skinny fiber help us absorb MORE calories from foods? I highly doubt it but I also don’t see any proof cellulase helps people either.
Im still not aware of any evidence that enzyme supplements. help people lose weight or if lack of enzymes in food hinders weight loss.
Sooo glad I found your review. I can now put this SF to rest as I will NOT be purchasing this product. Thanks for the review!!
Dee, thanks for writing. I’m glad I was able to help you.
Joe,
It was great to read your article!
I had a friend that had been talking about the Skinny Fiber and wanted me to become a distributer. I had not tried the product, but was told by the my friend that it worked wonders. Go to find out, I had two other friends distributing for Skinny Fiber that tried to get out and had a horrible time doing so. They tried cancelling their monthly shipments and asked to collect there final monies owed from the company. The company did not respond to the multiple emails requesting the cancellation for over month! They did eventually stop the shipments, but they were never paid out there final checks.
Both of my friends stated that all of the before and after pictures were stock photos that everyone in the business has access to and when they figured out what a scam it was they were appalled!
So, of course the Skinny Fiber company and its distributers are going to claim it works because they are making tons of money on anyone that signs up.
The Skinny Fiber website is made by a company that promotes multi-level marketing. They have created several similar websites including the “myitworks” website. They advertise to individuals that want to start a business and teach them how to make a huge profit on products with little cost to them. They show you how to create a tier system that makes the “owner/founder” millions! Not one of these products are approved by the FDA nor do they have any clinical research to back them up!
I guess my point is, why would you want to spend unnecessary money on a multi-level marketing scam? You can go to the nutrition store and by the actual raw products over the counter for a fraction of the cost! Not to mention that the products from store are from reputable companies that have been bottling supplements for years!
Anonymous, Thanks for your words and I’m glad you were able to find me. I didn’t know the people from Skinny Fiber were also involved with ItWorks. That’s for the heads up and really sorry to hear about the ordeal your friends went through.
I would love to know where you get the idea that SF and ItWorks are involved with each other. That is news to me, and trust me, I know a good bit about both. I actually did go to the GNC and get the “raw product” (for about the same price), and it TORE ME UP!! Even with lots of water, I had some major issues with it. Just thought I would let you know. And, as I stated before, I know for a fact that not all the pics are stock photos. I can’t say that none of them are, because I don’t post them all, but I do know many of them are real people who have really lost weight while taking this product.
As for those people who have been making supplements for years. I have tried many of them…this is the first thing that worked. Again, I know that different people have different opinions, but I wanted to just voice mine here–again. 🙂
Wvsigngal, if you scroll up somebody mentioned that that both it works and skinny fiber were from the same company. I took it as faith value since I no nothing about it works other than people keep asking me to look at it. If you as a sk distributor say they are not from the same parent company then I will take your word for that since you know better than I do about it.
Anonymous,
You should really check your facts. First of all Skinny Fiber is NOT associated with any “MYITWORKS’ websites. Second yes we use before and after photo and they are of REAL people, including myself, I assure you I am no Stock photo. I love my skinny fiber because it has helped me lose weight and it is an all natural product. We do not make the claim you will make huge money either.
As with any other business you are only going to make the money you earn. The harder you work the more you will make. That is with any business. When my husband started detailing cars he started at min wage but as he has shown his awesome work he is now one of the highest paid detailers in town.
