Update 8/21/19 The Plexus Slim Accelerator Plus supplement (Accelerator +) is said to have “Synergistic benefits help increase the effectiveness of Plexus Slim.” The product is also claimed to “increase energy”, “suppress appetite” and “speed up weight loss and fat inches.” Sounds good, but does it work? Is it safe? Accelerator Plus is a new formula that is significantly different from the original Accelerator formula. It contains new ingredients. By the end of this review, you will have a better understanding of whether Accelerator Plus is right for you.
Who Makes Accelerator Plus?
The Accelerator Plus supplement is a product of Plexus WorldWide Inc. which is located in Arizona. I cover the company and other things in my review of Plexus Slim so do read that for additional information. When this review was created, the Better Business Bureau gives Plexus WorldWide a rating of A+. See the BBB file for updates and more information.

Accelerator Plus Research
I searched the Plexus Slim website for research on the Accelerator but did not find any. The product website has stated that:
“When taken with Plexus Slim, the Accelerator + helps speed up weight loss or helps people overcome weight plateaus.”
But, they offer no proof that the combination of these products provides any added benefits over Plexus Slim alone. If we go back to the In the non-published clinical trial on Plexus Slim, it appears that the 8 people in the trial did not use the Accelerator but rather only Plexus Slim alone.
Tip. For more on the Plexus Slim clinical trial, see my review of Plexus Slim New Formula.
So, where is the proof that the Accelerator Plus adds any benefits to Plexus Slim alone?
Since the Accelerator Plus supplement appears to have no published peer-reviewed studies on it, let's now analyze the product by its ingredients and see what we can learn. I will show the weight loss research on each ingredient ―with an emphasis on the Accelerator's proprietary blend ―and in this way, hopefully, shed some light on what might be going on.
The Vitamins and Minerals
The Accelerator Plus supplement contains these vitamins and minerals:
I don’t believe any of these ingredients contributes significantly to the product. That said, I do want to touch on a couple of the ingredients because they show up a lot in other supplements.
1. Niacin
The form of niacin used in Accelerator Plus is niacinamide. Some people report flushing of the face after taking niacin but niacinamide should not do this.
Niacinamide is getting very sexy in the anti-aging world. See the Nicotinimide Rriboside review for more insights.
2. Vitamin B12
The Accelerator Plus supplement has 500 mcg of this vitamin which is 8334% more than people need to be healthy. In some circles, vitamin B12 is thought to help people lose weight ― despite any proof that it does. For more info see my review on Vitamin B12 and weight loss.
Vitamin B12 might also be found in weight loss supplements because some medications that treat diabetes can deplete B12 levels. Since people who take weight loss products may have type II diabetes and take these types of medications, on the surface, it might seem logical to add vitamin B12. That said since we store vitamin B12, it often a couple of years for a deficiency to show up.
While the lack of B12 may make people feel tired (due to anemia), vitamin B12 supplements do not boost energy levels in those who are not lacking in this nutrient.
2. Chromium Picolinate
Chromium is often used in weight loss supplements because of some evidence that it might help insulin work better, and in this way help reduce blood sugar levels. This is actually somewhat controversial because not all research supports that chromium works. For example, in this 2012 study, insulin was less efficient (in other words, insulin didn’t work as well) in those who received chromium picolinate.
For more information, see my review of Chromium Picolinate and Weight loss.
Accelerator Plus Proprietary Blend
I will list the relevant weight loss research on the ingredients in the proprietary blend in order as they appear on the Accelerator Plus label. This is because ingredients are often listed in order of abundance. In other words, since yerba mate is the first ingredient in the list, the Accelerator Plus likely contains the most of this and the least green tea extract, since this ingredient is listed last.
Yerba Mate
Its scientific name is Ilex paraguariensis. In some studies, it's also called “yerba mate.” I searched the national library of medicine for:
- “Yerba mate and weight loss”
Most of the studies I saw involved giving yerba mate to lab rats or mice. Since I'm not a big fan of mice or rat studies as the sole basis for the use of supplements, I'll only briefly list them here:
What about people? I didn’t see any human studies showing that herba mate helping people lose weight. What's up with that? Herba mate contains caffeine and this may be why it's in Accelerator Plus.
In this 2001 study titled, Weight loss and delayed gastric emptying following a South American herbal preparation in overweight patients, a solution containing yerba mate, guarana and Damiana, was noted to help people lose weight. But this study isn't relevant to our discussion because it involved the use of other herbs that are not found in Accelerator Plus.
Higenamine
This is a phytochemical that is also a heart stimulant. It is also sometimes called Norcoclaurine. Searching for clinical databases for:
- Higenamine and weight loss
- Higenamine obesity
- Higenamine metabolism
does not show any studies showing this compound works.
In one investigation, researchers noted that a supplement that contained higenamine, given to 16 healthy people, increased calorie burning and the amount of fat being used for fuel. While this is an interesting study, the supplement used also contained caffeine and Yohimbe. Since Accelerator Plus does not contain Yohimbe, this study is not relevant.
Tip. For more on yohimbe, see my review of the male sex supplement Androzene.
Another reason why I don’t feel the study is relevant is that the people tested were “healthy” and in their 20s. What about people who are not healthy and older?
Hordenine
Hordenine is also a phytochemical extract. It's derived from barley. It scientific name is Hordeum vulgare. Hordenine is a stimulant. Technically, compounds like this are called sympathomimetic because they mimic the effects of adrenaline. This means hordenine seems to have some stimulant properties. In an attempt to determine if hordenine helped weight loss, I searched clinical databases for:
- Hordenine obesity
- Hordenine weight loss
- Hordeum vulgare weight loss
- Hordeum vulgare obesity
I found no studies showing if hordenine helped weight loss in humans or lab animals. Granted, lack of evidence does not necessarily mean something doesn’t work, but it makes me wonder if hordenine was chosen to be an ingredient in Accelerator Plus specifically because of its alleged stimulant properties?
See this for more insights on hordenine
Hawthorne
The scientific name for this herb is Crataegus monogyna. Accelerator Plus actually lists “hawthorn leaf extract” as an ingredient, but they don’t tell us what extract of the hawthorn leaf they use. This makes evaluating the herb difficult because different extract might have different effects.
Hawthorn is said to make the heart pump better and because of this, the herb was used in some settings to help, a serious medical condition called congestive heart failure. How much it helps is open to debate. In one study, hawthorn appeared to make heart problems worse.
Warning: Do not self medicate with hawthorn if you have heart problems. Speak to your doctor first. See the side effects section for more information on hawthorn.
While there is no evidence that hawthorn helps weight loss, because of its effects on heart pumping, I speculate the idea behind why this herb is in Accelerator Plus is for this reason: A heart that pumps more blood also pumps more oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs, in the hopes that this will give people more energy. This is my guess given the premise of what Accelerator Plus is supposed to do.
I've seen hawthorn in other supplements I've looked at before such as:
- Zi Xiu Tang (weight loss supplement)
- Slim Trim U (weight loss supplement)
- Avalowerin (blood pressure supplement)
I've also written a review of Hawthorn as well.
5-HTP
The scientific name for this is 5-hydroxytryptophan. As the name suggests, 5 HTP is derived from tryptophan, a non-essential amino acid that we naturally make every day. 5 HTP helps us make a brain chemical called serotonin. Elevated serotonin levels appear to improve mood as well as reduce appetite.
In fact, some weight loss drugs such as Belviq, and the now banned drug, sibutramine, function by raising serotonin levels.
There is some evidence that 5 HTP might help weight loss in people. In a small 1998 study titled Effects of oral 5-hydroxy-tryptophan on energy intake and macronutrient selection in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients, 750 mg of 5HTP a day for 2 weeks, lost weight and reduced their intake of carbs and fats.
These results were similar to a small 1992 study involving 20 overweight women, where 900 mg of 5 HTP for 12 weeks resulted in weight loss and carb intake.
In a 1989 study titled, The effects of oral 5-hydroxytryptophan administration on feeding behavior in obese adult female subjects, 19 women were given 5 HTP or a placebo for five weeks. In this study 5 HTP caused the women to lose weight and eat less food. The amount of 5 HTP used in this study was 8 mg per kilogram of body weight.
Tip. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds. So, for a 200 pound person in this study, this would equal 200 / 2.2 =91 kg and 91 kg x 8 mg = 727 mg per day.
How much 5HTP is in Accelerator Plus? They don’t tell us but I'm guessing it is less than used in these three studies. This because the entire proprietary blend of all the ingredients in Accelerator Plus only adds up to 950 mg, and 5HTP is near the bottom of the ingredients list. This says to me that there is probably little 5HTP. Maybe less would work just as well, I don’t know?
Green Tea Leaf Extract
Green tea contains many compounds and we are not told what extract of the green tea leaf Accelerator Plus contains. Could the extract used by caffeine? Green tea also contains other compounds such as theobromine and Theophylline which have some structural similarities to caffeine.
See the supplements and liver damage review.
Accelerator Plus Stimulant Ingredients:
- Herba mate
- Higenamine
- Hordenine (maybe)
- Caffeine (if it contains caffeine)
Summary of Ingredient Actions
Looking at the ingredients in the proprietary blend as a whole, they seem to fall into two categories:
- Those that act as stimulants
- Those that might raise serotonin levels
This is analogous to how some weight loss drugs work are supposed to work. That said, how effective the combination of ingredients in Accelerator Plus would be, I can't say since there doesn’t appear to be any published research on the product.
Ingredients With Evidence
Based on the research, it appears that 5 HTP has the most human evidence that it might help some people lose weight. That's not to say 5 HTP is a slam dunk because there aren't a lot of studies, but there is more in support of 5 HTP than the other ingredients.
Theoretically, is possible that weight loss benefits might be greater with the combination of ingredients in Accelerator Plus but without proof, it's hard to say.
Accelerator Plus And Plexus Slim: Better Together?
On the product website, the claim was made that Plexus Accelerator Plus has “Synergistic benefits help increase the effectiveness of Plexus Slim.” But the company provides no proof that this is true. Even in the clinical study used to tout the effectiveness of Plexus Slim, there is no mention of any Accelerator used.
Theoretically, if the Plexus Accelerator plus does what it's touted to do, there may be an enhanced effect, but until somebody tests the combination against Plexus Slim alone, it's anyone's guess.
Accelerator Plus vs. The Old Accelerator
Remember, Accelerator Plus is the new version of Plexus Accelerator. I cover the ingredients in the original Plexus Accelerator, in my review of Plexus Slim, so read that for additional information, but here is a quick side-by-side comparison of the old Accelerator vs. the new Plexus Accelerator Plus for those who were curious:
Accelerator Plus ingredients |
Old Accelerator formula |
Niacin (Niacinamide) | Calcium |
Vitamin B6 | Magnesium |
Vitamin B12 | Dark chocolate |
Calcium | Natural caffeine |
Chromium picolinate | Green tea extract |
Yerba mate leaf extract | Vanadium chelate |
Higenamine | B-Phenylethylamine HCl |
Hordenine | Gerana X* |
Hawthorne | |
5 HTP | |
Green tea leaf extract | |
*See my review of Plexus Slim for more about the ingredient called Gerana X
Comparing both old and new products side-by-side, it appears that the only ingredients that the Accelerator + has in common with the old formula are:
- Green tea
- Calcium
Buy Accelerator+
Plexus Accelerator is not available in stores like Target, Walmart, Costco, CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid. It can only be purchased by Plexus Ambassitors or on the Plexus website.
How Much Is Accelerator+?

Accelerator Plus Side Effects
I'm not a fan of stimulant-based weight loss supplements. I think the risks outweigh the benefits. I feel the same way about stimulant weight loss drugs too. If you are have experienced any side effects from Accelerator Plus please leave a comment so others can benefit.
Here are some things to consider when taking this supplement. This list is not complete:
- If you have any problems with your heart, blood pressure, kidneys or liver, speak to your doctor first. Show them the ingredients. If they are not familiar with the ingredients, show them to a pharmacist or dietitian.
- If you take ANY medications, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or dietitian first.
- Stop taking at least 2 weeks before having surgery
- The product may cause irregular heart beating
- Don't use if you take any blood thinner medications
- Don't take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Since Yerba mate contains caffeine, it might increase blood pressure in some people. In a 2013 review of Yerba mate and cancer research studies titled Maté consumption and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a meta-analysis, researchers noted that consumption of yerba mate was associated with cancer of the esophagus.
There is some evidence that hordenine might cause a false positive test result for opiate use. Because hordenine can have a stimulating effect, theoretically, it might increase heart rate and blood pressure, although I can't find any evidence that it does. See the Kratom review for more insights.
Some research suggests smokers who use yerba mate may be at a greater risk of cancer than non-smokers. Would capsules that contained yerba mate for short periods of time do the same thing? This is unknown.
Higenamine can accelerate heart rate, and as far as I can tell, it has not been adequately tested in humans for safety.
The Plexus Slim website has said this about the Accelerator Plus:
Warnings: Plexus Worldwide, Inc. products are not intended for expectant or nursing mothers. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or any other cardiovascular condition, please consult with a physician before taking this product. Not intended for children under the age of 18. Avoid taking Plexus Worldwide, Inc. products with cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, PPA, or products containing high amounts of caffeine. Before starting this or any other supplementation, consult a physician first. If unpleasant effects occur, discontinue use.
Given the ingredients in the product, I think these cautions are appropriate. Here is a shortlist of theoretical issues that occurred to me as I was writing this review.
Hawthorn can interact with high blood pressure medications. I believe people who have:
- Heart problems
- Blood pressure problems
- Kidney problems
- Liver problems
or who take medications for these health issues, should speak to their doctor before taking hawthorn or supplements that contain this herb. Since many of those who take this Plexus Slim supplement may be overweight, it's possible they may have some of these health problems.
Some people have reported heart palpitations and dizziness after taking the hawthorn. Hawthorn can also interact with many types of medications such as those used to treat high blood pressure. Because Plexus Slim does not tell us the hawthorn extract they use, or how much is in the Accelerator Plus, it's impossible to know what side effects ―if any ―people might experience.
Because 5 HTP can raise serotonin levels, theoretically it might interact with antidepressant medications that also raise serotonin. This combination might ―in theory ―make serotonin levels go too high and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms of this condition can include but are not limited to:
- Rapid heart rate
- Elevated blood pressure
- Vomiting
- Muscle twitching
I can't discuss 5 HTP without mentioning Eosinophilia–myalgia syndrome (EMS), which is a very rare disorder characterized by debilitating muscle pain and high levels of immune cells called eosinophils. This disorder was big news in the late 1980s because it resulted in the deaths of over 30 people. All of these people were taking the amino acid, tryptophan.
While it is still debatable what caused EMS ―tryptophan itself or a contamination product in the tryptophan ―I mention this because there is speculation that 5 HTP itself may also raise the risk of EMS. Given how many people have taken 5 HTP over the years, I think the risk ―if it really exists ―is pretty low. See the EMS Network website for more information.
Does Accelerator Plus Work?
I can't find any good proof that the Plexus Accelerator plus raises the metabolic rate in humans or that it causes extra calorie burning or weight loss. If you read the comments below, take note that some say Accelerator Plus doesn't work. Interestingly some say the same thing about the new Plexus Slim formula also.

Kelly says
I am from Canada and just finished a phone call with customer service. When I tried the old product 1 year ago, I lost 17 pounds in one month. Then I got the reformulation and ended up in ER with 180 BPM and a red burning flush on my body. I was pretty sure I was going to die.
The rapid heart rate had me vomiting and I was told the ingredient niacin was responsible. I found some old bottles of the previous formulation and continued with those to lose 30 pounds. Then this new boost came out and I thought I would try that….High heart rate, the flush….just being on the drink, I have gained 20 pounds and crave carbs more than I ever have.
So until they go back to the old formulation Plexus will not work for me. I am now at the biggest I have ever been and am so unhappy. I found something that worked and they changed it.
Kailey says
This is the second day i have taken plexus accelerator and second day i feel like my heart is beating out of my chest. I will not take the accelerator again. Thank you for the information.
Joe says
Kailey, I’m glad to help and sorry you are having that problem.
Michael says
Kailey, this stuff is dangerous. To begin with, it’s a stimulant. Plexus has not been forthright in letting consumers know where this stuff is manufactured and they have “reformulated” this product. If people knew the damage that stimulants can do to their bodies, they might think twice. Athletes have died from taking stimulants – they only do one thing and that is increase your heart rate by chemical means. Stay away from this stuff.
Susan Pohlman says
Although you furnish all the information it may be a bit misleading, especially because I don’t see where you have used the product., I am a Plexus Slim & Accelerator user and love it, and an Ambassador. I have lost weight, I don’t get the shakes like over the counter pills give you, and I don’t have the cravings like I used to.
The Plexus Slim helps rid your intestinal tract of the bad bacteria that builds up in your system and replenishes the cells with more oxygen because it helps flush the dead cells from your system.
I’m a medical professional and this has been the best product I have ever used, and I’ve tried just about all of them.
One of the best parts about any of these products is there is a 60 day money back guarantee. You don’t get this if you buy from Amazon, though. So, if you don’t like the product and don’t have results, you can simply return it with no questions asked. It’s not for everyone, but it has helped tens of thousands achieve great results.
Joe says
Susan I like to keep to the science for the most part because if I said it worked… or didn’t … how would you know for sure? I prefer to show you the evidence so you can make a more informed decision and let you decide for yourself.
Michael says
I’d prefer that Mrs. Pohlman not advertise herself as a “Medical Professional” when she is in reality studying nursing. In addition, she seems to not have her products straight. It is the ProBio and BioCleanse that supposedly deals with intestinal tract issues.
Theresa says
I tried the plexus and accelerator for one week. I ended up with my hands and feet itching so bad ,then I started to get a rash that was hives it would go away after using gold bond cream I stoped using the products 5 days ago. I still have some hives through out the day but they do go away. From what I have read the niacin in the product was the type that should not cause hives. I don’t want anything to do with this product. Thank you for all your work in the research.
Joe says
Theresa, so sorry that happened to you. It might be the niacin or the itching could be due to an allergic reaction to something else in the product. I’m glad you are doing better now.
Kylee Reed says
I used Plexus Slim and Accelrator for 21 days after a friend who is an Ambassador convinced me to do so. My first day I was very anxious and dizzy. I expected there to be side effects since I usually do not drink caffeine. I shrugged it off and after a few days I was fine. I lost 3 pounds in the 21 days and was told by my doctor to stop due to a family history of heart problems and the fact that I take Celexus.
Now that I am off the product, I am experiencing severe headaches that last all day and do not ease even with medication. I suppose it is from the caffeine withdrawal but no where have I seen this listed as a post-product side effect so I wanted to share.
Joe says
Kylee, I do appreciate you sharing that and hope the headaches go away soon. They shouldn’t last long if it is due to caffeine withdrawal. If they dont get better soon, I think you should go back to your doctor.

Questions: RE: LABEL.. perhaps a question elsewhere, but putting it out there anyway for you.. The labeling on the “Accelerator+” states: “Plexus Worldwide, Inc. products are not intended for expectant or nursing mothers.
– See more at: http://www.plexusworldwide.com/products/accelerator#overview”
1) Should this be interpreted as on overall blanket statement for all products they sell?
2) They have changed their name, so does this even apply?
3) The people in the “testimonials” were the same people in the testimonials before this product was in the companies hands, so how can they falsely advertise and get away with it. (yes, I contacted bbb)
Michael says
carrie,
You pose great questions. The problem with this product, and most every other “supplement” is the lack of regulation and standards. Look no further than the recent issue with the Sensa product. These folks were allowed to run commercials that implied if you simply shake this product on your food, you will lose weight.
After all the catchy jingles and incessant commercials, the FTC finally got around to slapping Sensa with an order to return $26.5 million to consumers for misleading statements.
In addition to the weak oversight on this industry, the larger concern are the people who actually believe you can sprinkle something on food and magically lose weight. These same people are allowed to hold a driver’s license, vote, and procreate, which is even more frightening.
Are we to believe that these same people would stop and adhere to warning labels? No, but they sure as heck will fall all over themselves when they see “testimonials” that litter their Facebook page on a daily basis.
And with the added propaganda of making big bucks for selling this stuff, the lemmings flock in droves.
I applaud you for contacting the BBB. Maybe that will start the ball rolling on something.
Joe says
For those who missed it, Here is my review of Sensa.
April says
I have been taking Plexus faithfully for 30+ days and have noticed a racing heart, shakes, and I become easily agitated. After speaking with my husband I decided to stop Plexus to see if that was the culprit. I’ve read several of the comments above but not all…I’m curious if this is something others have had problems with.
Also, today is the first day I have not been on it…I’m wondering when this stuff will be out of my system and I won’t have these symptoms. Any thoughts?!
Joe says
April, yes some people have reported having higher heart rates while on the accelerator. Based on what you stated, I would not recommend using it anymore. I’m honestly not sure how long it takes to get out of your system. I recommend not using any caffeine until you feel better. If you feel worse or you dont feel better soon, I also recommend going to your doctor.
Also see my review of Plexus Boost as this contains several similar ingredients
Rebecca Burton says
I had that problem too and finally realized that the 5-htp (trytophan) adds too much serotonin because I’m already on an SSRI antidepressant. That causes serotonin syndrome and the racing heart is one of the first signs of that. By the 2nd or 3rd day off of plexus I was feeling much better.
Joe says
Rebecca, glad you are feeling better. 5 HTP is an interesting supplement but I advise people who take antidepressants to speak to a doctor first, because of what you stated.
Gabriela says
Joe, my ambassador is a great person, she make sure to educate me. She herself took the Boost, but she said she did not like the way she felt, so she stop taking it and she does not recommend it to any of her customers but if they still insist she warns them about all the possibilities.
As stated before she has been on Plexus as well as her followers (facebook) for over a year and they love it and swear by it. She only recommends the accelerator for 30 days and then off, she stated is not for long term use. I took the 3 day trial, I felt very sleepy an hour after taking it, but after reading your review I can blame the 5 HTP, though the only medication I take is Gapatin (something like that).
I am going to try it for 30 days..let’s hope no funny stuff.
Joe says
Gabriela, I truly do hope plexus helps you. For what its worth I recommend starting any new supplement with less than is recommended for the first week, just to see how you feel and cut back on any potential side effects that might pop up. Hopefully there are none with you.
Joe says
Here is my review of Plexus Boost http://supplementclarity.com/plexus-slim-boost-review/
Kelly says
Have you done a review on the new product yet?
Joe says
Kelly, I just learned that it has an official name -Plexus Boost. Ill try to get my review posted sometime this week.
Megan says
Its nice to see that I’m not the only one experiencing these side effects from the accelerator +. I have spoken with my up line about it and all of them say it is just me.
My story is similar to many of the other posting on this site. I’m 28, healthy and not on any medications. I Started out with the original accelerator and slim and it worked great, I lost 20lb in 3 weeks, felt good, no food or sugar cravings, I was even exercising again.
Then the new accelerator came out. The first day I took 2 pills because that is what I was taking with the original accelerator. What a mistake, 45 min in my heart started beating so hard I could feel it in my chest and all over my body.
Then it began beating faster and faster and I couldn’t get to calm down so I decided to try eating (even though I ate when I took the pills) but when I stood up I started to black out, I thought it may have been from standing up so I tried to give it a minute but it just got worse, then I got jittery and my hands started to shake, I was thinking I might have to go to the hospital. I had my boyfriend make me something to eat and 30 min later my heart was back to normal.
I was bound and determined to make this work so for the next two weeks I tried everything I could think of to be able to take it. I started with just one pill (same result just minus the black out), tried with food, without food, different foods, different amounts of food, different time of day, mixing into the slim, nothing helped so I stopped taking it.
I tried contacting Plexus about it but they never responded.
Now they are coming out with a new product, no ingredients are listed and right now it is only called pre launch product. I was so excited when I saw it, I thought they were finally listening to all the issues people have been having and decided to change the accelerator +.
I took 1 pill yesterday and its worse, IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS TAKING THE ACCELERATOR+, DONT TRY THIS NEW PRODUCT. Just like with the accelerator + 45 min in the heart problems started but the jittery feeling got so bad I almost couldn’t walk, then I got cold sweats and started to black out, on my way to sit down I started vomiting, after that I felt a tad better but was really cold, I crawled into bed and just wanted to pass out I was so exhausted but had to go to work. No more Plexus for me thanks.
Joe says
Megan, really sorry that happened to you and I appreciate you taking the time to alert people about this. I believe the many of the side effects people are experiencing with the Accelerator + as well as with the new pre-launch plexus product (THBV2 as they call it for now) are due to ingredient called “higenamine.” Both products contain Higenamine. This ingredient is a stimulant and increases heart rate and blood pressure. This effect may be greater when combined with caffeine (herba mate which is also in THBV2 has caffeine and does green tea also). While I try not to be a “bomb thrower” I’m starting to wonder if higenamine is the new “DMAA” substitute in supplements?
Because of the lack of human research, I can’t recommend supplements containing Higenamine. Your experiences reinforce my opinion on this.
Rebecca says
When is this magic weight loss supposed to begin? I have been on Plexus Slim and the Accelerator for 2 weeks now and have not lost any weight and my heart feels like a giant is squeezing the life out of me.
Joe says
Rebecca, STOP TAKING Plexus slim if you feel like your heart is squeezing together! I’m VERY uncomfortable with any squeezing heart pains. People having heart attacks often report it feeling like squeezing pains. Some say it feels like an elephant sitting on the chest. I dont know if that’s whats happening to you but I’d fell better if you just got off all of it. Its not working, so why keep doing it?
As an aside, I’m analyzing the new plexus product right now (the one they call THBV2) and I can tell you that I do not recommend it either. It contains the same ingredient as in the accelerator plus – higenamine. I think higenamine is one of the reasons you are feeling squeezing pains. I’m not comfortable with higenamine.
Regardless of all of this Rebecca, no weight loss is worth feeling the way you are describing. Since you are not losing any weight, its not worth it. Rebecca, I just want you to be safe.
carriesterma says
I agree with Joe. Stop taking this product. I have read dozens of people stating they are having issues like this and rapid heart beat … My suggestion: contact Med Watch 800-332-1088 or the consumer complaint coordinator in your state. A list of the coordinators can be found on the FDA website.

Please stop taking the accelerator+. According to the information that I have found, it would be the problem, not the slim. The accelerator+ works for me. I have no side effects from it, but I have hears others say differently.
I have tried the newer product that has been released for the ambassador level customers, it doesn’t work for me. I am starting to believe that both work very differently inside different bodies.
I didn’t like the way the newest version made me feel and I had more cravings. I think the important thing is to listen to your body. You don’t have to take anything to supplement your weight loss, but if you are feeling bad, definitely drop the accelerator+.
I agree with Joe too, you do not need to continue with it, if it makes your heart feel bad.

I took the original plexus slim and accelerator and lost 37 lbs in about a year. The weight didn’t come off quickly, but Plexus allowed me to keep it off. I didn’t exercise much and I pretty much ate what I wanted, but I could eat a bite of something and I was full. I had no cravings. I loved it.
The new formula doesn’t work for me at all. It doesn’t stop the cravings, it doesn’t make me feel satisfied, and I stay bloated. The old formula worked so well! I hate that they changed it.
Joe says
CS, I would not be at all surprised if they changed the formula if what Im reading here is any indication.
Anna says
Sounds like a new product is in the works!! It is already getting great reviews from the ambassadors!!
Joe says
Be on the look out for my review. I know what’s in it. As soon as it has an official name Ill release my review.

I agree with CS. I started taking PS and the original Accelerator and lost 20 pounds in 2 months. No cravings at all and easily satisfied with much less food. I LOVED it!! I have ordered 2 more months worth and it is horrible. All I crave are sweets and my appetite is not suppressed at all like the original was doing. Not sure if I’ll order any more Plexus. They had better get back to the original or something with the same benefits or they will be out of business sooner than later.
CS says
Same here! I have never craved sweets the way I craved them when I started taking the new formula..I had to quit taking it.

Just A Note That Niacin, While Natural, Opens Your Blood Vessels. As Well As The Vitamin Bs People With Bleeding Disorders Should Not Take Plexus Ever! I Have A Bleeding Disorder And While I Have A Mild Form My Hematologist Says I Shouldn’t Take Things That Open Up My Blood Vessels.
Im Not Sure What Niacin They Use But You Have To Do Your Research As Most Don’t Work As Well As Pure Niacin Alone. Niacin Also Causes Liver Damage. The Only Healthy Way To Lose Weight Is Eating Healthy And Exercise.
Once You Go Off Thus Product You Will Most Likely Gain All Your Weight Back And Then Some.
Joe says
RN, good points. My rule about supplements is “when in doubt, assume its a blood thinner until proven other wise.” A lot of things (vitamin E, glucosamine, fish oil etc) have blood thinning properties.

How do you eat “healthy”. Everything contains something that’s bad for you! It’s mind blowing just trying to figure it all out. You have to be a pharmacist or nutritionist. Ugg!
Alyssa Benson says
You can speak to a nutritionist or dietitian or even take a nutrition course online at your local community college. Online research from reliable sources helps. Many nutritionists and dietitians have blogs you can read or books.
Michael says
Alyssa, those are great suggestions. Sensible and logical. The issue with people who sell or jump on the Plexus cult train is that they do not want to invest any time or effort into doing things sensibly or logically. They simply want it right now. They want to mix a powder, pop a pill, and be on their merry way. They do not have even a basic understanding of how the human metabolism works, they simply buy into what they hear at an ambassador meeting or what they see on Facebook.
What is more attractive to these kinds of folks, spending time and educating themselves about how to eat sensibly and exercise or taking a selfie while posting “rockin’ the pink drink this morning!” for all of their friends to “like”? It is much easier to turn off your brain and blindly follow the allure of miracle results (unsubstantiated) than it is to do some true investment in one’s health.

Hi I was wondering if you have references for the statements you’ve made against this Plexus product. I am interested in reading more in depth about it. Thanks!
Joe says
Anonymous, I’ve linked to references in my review so you can check them out. If you have specific questions I can try to address them here also.

Hello! I started the accelerator about 3 weeks ago. I’m healthy, I have been working out for 2 years. I tried this product to help lose my last 15 pounds. I’m 26. The first day I tried it I thought I was having a heart attack. I didn’t link the product to my symptoms and tried it again the 2nd day. I thought maybe after a couple weeks my symptoms would stop. It hasnt.
I have lost 4 to 6 pounds. But I’m not sure if it’s directly correlated to this product. I am anemic and around the same time I started the he product I found out so started taking iron, stress b complex along with a probiotic. In addition I started taking an adrenal supplement. So all of these could be playing a role in weight loss.

I have been on the accelerator and plexus slim for 3 days. I want to lose weight but I was mainly going for the entire energy thing. I should have known better. I couldn’t keep my eyes open with either. Part of my problem, is I tend to have low blood sugar. I can’t eat high carb meals or a lot of sugar because it drops my blood sugar then raises it back up.
I was also extremely nauseated, to the point it felt like morning sickness. As soon as I stopped taking it, that went away. I also had cramping in my abdomen. I will admit I lost 3 pounds in those 3 days, but I’m pretty sure it will come right back on if I’m not careful because I could barely eat anything because I was so nauseated.
Pat Smith says
Please check for diabetes. Low blood sugar is the result (not cause) of high blood sugar. You need to look at your diet carefully.
Amy R says
Actually it’s not. Some people actually have low blood sugar. I’ve been checked by my doctor, and an endocrinologist. My pancreas actually secretes too much insulin in response to large meals and sugar.
Unfortunately this may lead to diabetes in the future for me, and I know this. Low blood sugar occurs in diabetes due to a side effect of the medication they are taking. Sometimes if they are on a high dose or don’t eat enough, the medication lowers their blood sugar too much and causes low blood sugar.

I started taking the Plexus Slim/Accelerator combo March 1, 2014. I am a type 2 diabetic on metformin, glimiperide and Bydureon….I could not get my blood sugar readings under 200! As of the end of March I have lost 31 pounds and my blood sugar average is 96! Life saving numbers! I have more energy, sleep better, and believe this product is adding quality years to my life. I am also on Prozac and have not had any side effects.
Joe says
Mary, thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you are doing better. continued success 🙂

I started taking the new Accelerator Plus and Pink Drink and after 3 months, I have lost absolutely nothing! I am hungrier than ever. Also, I had a VERY hard time sleeping at night when taking the Accelerator Plus. It was horrible! I didn’t see anything positive out of it so I’m done!
Worried says
I ordered the 7 day trial combo pack and was feeling pretty good with it and lost 2 lbs. So I decided to do the 30 days. Something was definitely not the same! I am fine with the plexus slim however the accelerator Made me feel like I was having a heart attack!!
My heart was beating so hard I felt like it was gonna pound out of my chest, I started shaking and sweating. Will NEVER take the accelerator again! Please note I have no health problems am 40 years old and am not sensitive to caffeine. Something in them is NOT SAFE!!!
Gabriela says
Worried, did you take one or two pills? Are you still taking the product?
Annabelle says
I have been on PS and accelerator combo for about a month and 1/2. I then added their cleanse and probio5. I think it has been pretty nice. I’m a working school teacher and mother of 2 under 4 years of age. I have enjoyed the effects. I am running and/or exercising again every other night. I am thinking of dropping the accelerator.
I had worked my way up to 2 accelerators, at a time. I do get heart palpitations when taking stimulants, but I haven’t had any with this. I have lost about 10-15 pounds. However, I had been having RA flare ups and I haven’t had any since being on the PS product. I have backed off on the accelerator.
I’m not taking any now, and I am still okay. I am not a big caffeine person, but I have a cup of coffee in the morning. I am curious to continue following this informational site!! Thank you for presenting the facts! I really appreciate it.
Joe says
Annabelle, thanks for saying that and Im glad you are feeling better now 🙂
