Update 3/9/20. Leptigen is a weight loss supplement that contains an interesting ingredient called MeraTrim. Does Leptigen work? Does It have any side effects? Who makes Leptigen? These will be some of the questions I'll try to answer in this review. Leptigen is not the same thing as Lipothin which is another weight loss supplement. See the DietSpotLight Burn review for more information.
What Does The Name Mean?
The name Leptigen is interesting because it reminds me of “Leptin” a hormone, made inside fat cells that play a role in hunger. The idea behind the name is a subtle reference that it might influence leptin levels and in doing, curb appetite and promote weight loss.
That said evidence the Lepigen alters leptin levels could not be located.
Leptigen Research
On the FAQ page of Leptigen.com it's stated that:
“we referenced 284 published scientific studies to verify the claims that we make about the ingredients in Leptigen.”
Understand that while research exists on the ingredients of the supplement, that is not the same thing as research on the supplement itself. To best understand the supplement its necessary to look at its ingredients.
Let's do that next.
Leptigen Ingredients
Each capsule of Leptigen has these ingredients:
Decaffeinated green tea extract | 200 mg |
Chromium polynicotinate (Chromate) | 100 mcg (83% DV) |
Meratrim | 400 mg |
Caffeine | 75 mg |
The label lists these 2 ingredients as well:
- MeraTrim
- Green Select EGCG
See the Research Section below.
Other Ingredients
Leptigen also contains these “other ingredients”
- Gelatin
- Cellulose
- Silicon dioxide
- Magnesium stearate (vegetable source)
- Lecithin phospholipids
These other ingredients play no role in the effects or benefits of the supplement.
Chromium Polynicotinate
This is another name for chromium. It's a combination of chromium and niacin (a B vitamin). Supplements often contain chromium bonded to vitamins to increase absorption. Chromium has been used in weight loss supplements for many years, although most research shows it does not work. See the review of chromium and weight loss .
Chromium polynicotinate is sometimes found in weight loss supplements, likely due to a study from the 1990s noting that it helped women lose weight (woman taking chromium picolinate actually gained weight).
See the review of chromium polynicotinate for more information.
Leptigen uses a trademarked brand of chromium polynicotinate called “ChromeMate” made by a company called InterHealth Nutraceuticals (now part of Lonza company). To support its effects this study noted it helped people lose weight more than a placebo.
Leptigen contains 100 micrograms of ChromeMate which is more than the above study used, so that is good.
More good news is Chromate is not expensive
Caffeine
Many weight loss supplements contain caffeine. The idea is probably twofold:
1. caffeine appears to have a small fat burning effect
2. people who are more awake might burn more calories through doing more physical activity
Leptigen has 75 mg of caffeine per capsule. That's about what is in a cup of coffee.
Green Select EGCG
This is a trademarked version of green tea found in Leptigen. This form is supposed to be better absorbed than “regular” green tea. Another name for this ingredient is Green Select Phytosome. One study showing Green Select Phytosome helped people lose weight.
MeraTrim
MeraTrim is another ingredient in Leptigen. It's composed of two separate ingredients:
- Sphaeranthus indicus
- Garcinia mangostana
There is some weight loss research on MeraTrim.
The research notes that Meratrim works when people take 800 mg per day. I'll assume Leptigen has this amount but I'm not sure as I could not determine the amount from the label.
See the MeraTrim Review

Previoulsy the BBB used to list another website for the company – “Avesil.com.” Before Leptigen, there was another weight loss supplement called Avesil. Their ingredients looked very much alike.
Leptigen and Avesil have both been promoted on DietSpotlight website. Another supplement promoted on the website is

Yes, the label indicates that the product contains soy. The soy may come from the Green Select EGCG extract which has a little bit of soy. Generally soy is not a problem for most people.
How To Return Leptigen
The supplement came with a 120-day money-back guarantee. Before returning Leptigen call their customer service department at 800-555-3951. The product website says you have 120 days -from the time they order the supplement- to return it.

Oddly, The product return page stated: “We cannot accept returns on overly used products.” What does “overly used products” mean?

Does Leptigen Work?
Leptigen has no clinical studies to know if it works or not. However, there are a few studies on Meratrim which is an ingredient as well as Green Select Phytosome.
I ordered my trial through PayPal ( paid for the shipping which was 3.95) now after reading all this I’m skeptical about this company. I’m calling them in the Am and contacting PayPal so they can’t charge the 89.95 membership fee. Thanks
Don’t order the product.
I tried it hoping for better energy but only received constipation. I stopped, reset my body, and tried again thinking maybe something else caused the constipation since the ingredients are supposedly so great.
During my repeated attempts at using it, I received two more bottles before getting my order canceled. When I called to cancel my order and ask about returning the unopened bottles for a refund I was told I could only get a $45 partial refund on one bottle and that the 120 day refund did not apply. The guy on the line was incredibly rude and talked over me the entire time when I challenged the refund and asked how it was fair that I couldn’t get a full refund for unused and unopened products.
I cannot recommend them for any reason. Now I’m stuck with product that doesn’t work but costs $$$.
Thank goodness for Joe’s site and for you who posted comments about the bad business practices of this company that you have encountered.
PLEASE help stop other innocent people from losing money by reporting this company to an official agency. I had a problem with a company like this, so I looked up “Scam Reporting” on Google. There are many sites available, such as the FTC, the FBI, and others on the Google pages for scam reporting, including international businesses.
Be careful even with these sites, however-if they ask you for a CC #, your social security number, or for money, that site may not be legitimate/real. Isn’t it terrible how we constantly have to distrust so much?? That is why Joe Cannon and his books and his sites are one of the most trust-worthy sites I’ve ever found. He uses FACTS with no bias and no ties to supplement companies.
Thanks Roseann! 🙂
I got a free trial of a month of leptigen. I have not seen any results. I actually have gained weight. I’m an avid athlete however so I know I’ve gained muscle. I feel great but I don’t credit that to leptigen. Perhaps if the price was within the realm of reasonable I would recommend it. But for the price of buying this product why not just join weight watchers or invest in yummy, healthy food? I think there are better ways to lose weight.
This company really puts down Body Toner Censor with Tonalin which I just purchased. any info on this product? I don’t know what to believe. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Christina, Ive heard of Tonalin, which is a CLA supplement. Ive not heard of Body Toner Censor but a quick look at it makes me think it might be a CLA/ fatty acid supplement. The idea reminded me of Ab Cuts which I reviewed previously. (click the link to read my review of that).
If you read the fine print it says you have 14 days to cancel and you will not be charged again for an auto refill. Any ‘free trial’ comes with these strings attached. Yes the company is foreign, my bank charged me for international consumer fee.
My experience was I took two a day, one before breakfast and one before leaving my office at 5pm. I have nearly lost my appetite completely and lost 4 lbs the first week. I ate salad and protein, fruit a plenty and some carbs.
I’ve canceled and paid the $5.95. its worth it to keep the bottle. Going forward I’m not sure what I’ll’ do to replace Leptigen, I’m researching now. I may buy Meratrim and add other supplements which are cheap at Vitamin world.
FYI: I am tachycardia patient, this had no effect on my heart. I also drink over 8 glasses of water a day, plus 2-3 coffee/ tea. Hydration is important in addition to eating healthier.
good luck.
Donna, thank you for letting me know that this product didn’t affect your tachycardia. I have high BP, which is stable, but I take 3 BP medications! I appreciate anyone who lets others know whether weight loss and other supplements affect their heart rate or BP, although I would still be careful because everyone is different. I always do what Joe suggests-I start out with a lower dose, and if no problems occur, I increase the dose slowly.
Hi Roseann, Leptigen does have caffeine and that can increase BP and heart rate. The label says its only 75 mg but I want to point that out if you or others are sensitive to caffeine. Personally I don’t see anything special about Leptigen especially since its almost identical to another weight loss supplement called Avisil. If this product works, I wonder if its the Meratrim ingredient? Here’s my review of Meratrim.
THIS IS A SCAM!!! I TRIED TO PLACE AN ORDER OVER THE INTERNET, AND MY BANK THANKFULLY WOULDN’T ALLOW MY CARD TO CLEAL, BECAUSE THE COMPANY IS LOCATED IN THE UK. NOT THE USA……….. ALSO, THEY KEEP TRYING TO GET MONEY FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT!! MY BANK HAS LOCKED MY DEBIT CARD FOR 3 DAYS BECAUSE OF THIS COMPANY TRYING TO CHARGE MY CARD.
BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY!! I GAVE THEM MY EMAIL ADDRESS WHILE I WAS SETTING UP TO BUY ONLINE……NOW ALL I GET IS SPAM. BE WELL AWARE OF THIS SHAM!!
Elsie, That’s interesting. Did your bank tell you the company was located in the UK? The better business bureau has their company located in Florida. Here is their BBB file: http://www.bbb.org/south-east-florida/business-reviews/health-and-diet-products-retail/green-bracket-in-coral-gables-fl-92012630
DO NOT TRY THIS PRODUCT. IT DON’T WORK AND MAKES YOU FEEL SICK. THIS COMPANY WILL TAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT WITHOUT YOU KNOWING. AND THEY ARE RUDE PEOPLE WHEN YOU CALL.
It got worse. I just called to cancel my trial and the rep said that I either have to ship it back or pay $5.95. She said it was a trial, not a free trial. What a scam!
igor, no way really! a trial not a free trial? I really hope that’s not something others are running into..
SAME THING HAPPEN TO ME. THEY TOOK 85.00 OUT OF MY ACCOUNT AT 14 DAYS AND RUDE WHEN ASKED TO GIVE MY MONEY BACK
soluble fiber is plentiful in whole grains, wheat bran and certain vegetables. It helps food run through your stomach and intestines quickly, keeping your system clean and reducing the chance of constipation.
!!!BEWARE!!! This company is a scam…it took 7 days to receive the product from them (whoever “they” are???), which only left 7 days of the “14 day trial” period (not a fair amount of time at all, to see if the product works!)…and trust me, they debited my checking account on the 14th day!
I Called “Leptigen” and spoke to rep “Meg” about receiving a refund but I was not heard and so my only option was to cancel my “Leptigen membership”…please don’t purchase this product, you’ll be sorry!!!
same thing happened to me but I’ve been trying to figure out how to cancel my membership but couldn’t. any help ?
Ziad, call the company at 800-555-3951.
Man, I wish I would have read these comments before ordering my “free” trial! I HATE shady business practices, and this place is the epitome of that! Actually tried to argue that the letter states that you HAVE to call to cancel. Well, guess what? NO it doesn’t. It says you only have to return it within the “free trial” period. Free trial my A$$!!!
Do NOT order this thinking you get a deal getting a free bottle. Usually if it seems too good to be true, it is. So I got my leptigen, haven’t took it as I am doing a cleanse and got notification I was charged $89.95 on my card! I called Leptigen customer service and the lady was arguing with me.
I told them they need to put ON the website that you are giving the customer a month supply (not just a 14 day trial) that will be charged full price if no cancellation is made within 14 days. Of course she said in the terms and agreements it states if not canceled in 14 days as well as with the shipment they send a notice.
My son got into my box and played with everything in it so I NEVER saw this insert and I don’t read the terms and conditions as I usually trust a company not to screw me over. Seems like how they get their money is from screwing people over. $90 for a month supply of something that doesn’t work is VERY pricey.
Hi Tawny, I’m so sorry that happened to you. Have you tried calling your credit card company and trying to dispute the charge?
I just ordered a bottle now I’m scared to take it I don’t wanna die I got two kids
Felicia, While I dont think its going to kill anyone, don’t take anything that you are not comfortable with. As I tried to show in my review, there is nothing special about Leptigen. To me it just looks for the most part like a new name on an old product.
If it works, I think its the meratrim ingredient. See my Meratrim review for more on this.
Please share my review with your friends.
I tried this for about a week and it caused me to have stomach cramps and diarrhea. I contacted the company to cancel my subscription, and they gave me the runaround regarding sending the product back.
Unfortunately, life is hectic as a mom of three, and I forgot to mail it within their specified time frame, and they did charge me the $89 fee. I was very unhappy, to say the least! So beware that they will hold you to it if you choose to cancel.
Hi Rachael, Sorry that happened to you. If you used a credit card, reach out to them. they may be able to help you.
I got my trial and immediately noticed on the included paperwork that I’d have to return the bottle if I wasn’t satisfied. I called customer service very upset, and the lady was really nice about it.
She said I could keep the trial bottle and I won’t be charged. It’s only been about 3 weeks, so we’ll see. I haven’t noticed a difference but I have had two people tell me I look like I have lost weight.
Hi do they charge again after a month ..? Im worried they charge my card again after the first month ..this company is a scam!
Anyone notice any weight loss with this product? I remember taking a supplement called ZXT several years ago, but FDA put a warning on it because it contained sibutramine (sorry for spelling errors) and apparently thats not good for you… anyway, it WORKED so well, I lost about 30 lbs in 3 months, ive been on the search for something similar since then, and so far, no luck, so I rodered the trial offer today. Hoping someone has tried it!!
Hi Kari, I have a few reviews on that product and others like it. You are right it was the illegal weight loss drug that caused the effects you saw, not the supplement itself.

Have you seen my review on weight loss products that do have evidence? Here is the link.
Joe, have you heard any comments about leptigen causing bloating or water retention? Im also using fish oil and a multi vitamin so i cant say leptigen is the culprit but ive noticed i feel very bloated and seem to be holding a lot of water with leptigen. Also, have you heard how soon ill notice a difference? And did people lose inches instead of weight?
Hi Kari, I dont think Ive ever heard of bloating with Leptigen but maybe others here have? Like all weight loss supplements, when it works might be based on other things we do (eat a bit less, exercise a bit more). Honestly I think the jury is out on Leptigen. Because I cant know for sure, please do keep us all updated on how it is working for you.
I ordered the “Special Trial Offer” about 10 minutes ago and THEN read these comments…..I immediately called and told them to just cancel my order before they even sent it to me. She naturally asked why I didn’t want to try it and I told her that I didn’t want to be charged for it and that I have PCOS and didn’t know how it would react so she said ok and cancelled it. They better be refunding my $3.95 too!
I did the same thing, they refunded me. Hope that is piece of mind. Except, since I saw they will actually do so, I went ahead and reordered today lol and plan to cancel it as soon as I see it shipped 🙂 I dont think you need to worry!!
I took this product and i gotta say, i did lose weight but this product feels like a lesser version of dnp (dinitrophenol 2-4)
Jettro, there is no DNP (dinitrophenol) in Leptigen. DNP is safe and nobody should use it. As this study points out, there have been over 60 deaths attributed to DNP: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3550200/
I did not say say anything about the product having dnp, however i did say it “feels” like the lesser version of dnp because i took it and the heart rate, high temperature and the headches are symptoms of this product, at least that is what i felt
Jettro, yes I know. You just got me curious and so I went back and checked. My guess is what you felt might have been due to the caffeine but other than that I, I’m at a loss.
Hi! Do you mind me asking about how long until you started noticing? I ordered my trial bottle today.. hoping ill notice at least an appetite suppressant pretty quickly!
Joe, you meant “unsafe”, not “safe”.
I meant in your first reply to Jettro, you wrote “DNP is safe and should not be taken by anyone.” You meant unsafe, didn’t you?
Hi Roseann, correct I meant un-safe. DNP is not something I feel people should be using.
Roseann, good eye! Correct DNP is NOT safe. Nobody should use DNP. Thanks for seeing my error Roseann 🙂
I ordered Leptigen, but only used it for a week. I had to stop because it was making my heart race. (I do have blood pressure issues, and pretty sure that was a cause of negative effects.) I emailed the company, and they refunded the $89.95 the very next day. Great customer service!
I am very scared that they will charge me $90! because I ordered the free trail four days ago and it came in today, shipping was fast! but reading all these comments makes my stomach drop! I am very worried, what can I do to not have them charge me $90? I don’t have that amount of money like other people do. I work part time for a few days a week because I have to focus on school more, so I don’t get paid a lot to be charged $90! someone please help.
Hi Sharon, call the Leptigen company and make sure you are not on an autoship program. when you ordered the free trial, did you use your bank card or a credit card? I often recommend using a credit card because prevents companies from taking funds directly from your checking account. Either way, call the company and make sure you are not getting automatic shipments.
Sharon I did the same thing as you. Will you let me know if they are going to auto charge us or if it was a one time thing.
I just received a shipment & it states to return any unused product w/in the 14 day trial period to AVOID being charged the $89.95 + s/h charge (need it pre-authorized 1st). Unfortunately I ordered mine over the weekend-so I lost a day for my 14 day trial! As the trial period starts from the day you place your order-NOT when you receive it!
You can call & extend your trial, I already did that once & hoping to do it again. I was told I can cancel anytime before my trial is up & won’t be charged. I’d like to avoid mailing anything back.
I received my trial today, very quick shipping. I was disappointed to see in the included leaflet that “If you decide to cancel during your trial, just ship the product back to us within 21 days to avoid being charged the Leptigen Member Price mentioned above ($89.95). I immediately called and spoke to customer service and she canceled my trial no problem, said I wouldn’t be charged, and I could keep the first bottle. We’ll see if it works.
Did it work Amber?
I have only been taking one a day (the directions say to take two) so I could make them last and I haven’t noticed a difference. I actually feel like I have gained some weight, but that may be due to another medication I am taking. I’d save your money.
