Update 3/9/20. Leptigen is a weight loss supplement that contains an interesting ingredient called MeraTrim. Does Leptigen work? Does It have any side effects? Who makes Leptigen? These will be some of the questions I'll try to answer in this review. Leptigen is not the same thing as Lipothin which is another weight loss supplement. See the DietSpotLight Burn review for more information.
What Does The Name Mean?
The name Leptigen is interesting because it reminds me of “Leptin” a hormone, made inside fat cells that play a role in hunger. The idea behind the name is a subtle reference that it might influence leptin levels and in doing, curb appetite and promote weight loss.
That said evidence the Lepigen alters leptin levels could not be located.
Leptigen Research
On the FAQ page of Leptigen.com it's stated that:
“we referenced 284 published scientific studies to verify the claims that we make about the ingredients in Leptigen.”
Understand that while research exists on the ingredients of the supplement, that is not the same thing as research on the supplement itself. To best understand the supplement its necessary to look at its ingredients.
Let's do that next.
Leptigen Ingredients
Each capsule of Leptigen has these ingredients:
| Decaffeinated green tea extract | 200 mg |
| Chromium polynicotinate (Chromate) | 100 mcg (83% DV) |
| Meratrim | 400 mg |
| Caffeine | 75 mg |
The label lists these 2 ingredients as well:
- MeraTrim
- Green Select EGCG

Other Ingredients
Leptigen also contains these “other ingredients”
- Gelatin
- Cellulose
- Silicon dioxide
- Magnesium stearate (vegetable source)
- Lecithin phospholipids
These other ingredients play no role in the effects or benefits of the supplement.
Chromium Polynicotinate
This is another name for chromium. It's a combination of chromium and niacin (a B vitamin). Supplements often contain chromium bonded to vitamins to increase absorption. Chromium has been used in weight loss supplements for many years, although most research shows it does not work. See the review of chromium and weight loss .
Chromium polynicotinate is sometimes found in weight loss supplements, likely due to a study from the 1990s noting that it helped women lose weight (woman taking chromium picolinate actually gained weight).

Leptigen uses a trademarked brand of chromium polynicotinate called “ChromeMate” made by a company called InterHealth Nutraceuticals (now part of Lonza company). To support its effects this study noted it helped people lose weight more than a 
Leptigen contains 100 micrograms of ChromeMate which is more than the above study used, so that is good.
More good news is Chromate is not expensive
Caffeine
Many weight loss supplements contain caffeine. The idea is probably twofold:
1. caffeine appears to have a small fat burning effect
2. people who are more awake might burn more calories through doing more physical activity
Leptigen has 75 mg of caffeine per capsule. That's about what is in a cup of coffee.
Green Select EGCG
This is a trademarked version of green tea found in Leptigen. This form is supposed to be better absorbed than “regular” green tea. Another name for this ingredient is Green Select Phytosome. One study showing Green Select Phytosome helped people lose weight.
MeraTrim
MeraTrim is another ingredient in Leptigen. It's composed of two separate ingredients:
- Sphaeranthus indicus
- Garcinia mangostana
There is some weight loss research on MeraTrim.
The research notes that Meratrim works when people take 800 mg per day. I'll assume Leptigen has this amount but I'm not sure as I could not determine the amount from the label.

Who Makes Leptigen?
The company that makes the supplement is called Green Bracket LLC. According to the Better Business Bureau, they are located at:
7320 NW 12th St STE 110 Miami, FL 33126-1913. This address corrosponds to a supplement review website called DietSpotLight.com
The Better Business Bureau gives Green Bracket LLC a rating of “F.” See the BBB file for updates and more information.
Previoulsy the BBB used to list another website for the company – “Avesil.com.” Before Leptigen, there was another weight loss supplement called Avesil. Their ingredients looked very much alike.
Leptigen and Avesil have both been promoted on DietSpotlight website. Another supplement promoted on the website is
called DietSpotlight Burn.

Does Leptigen Contain Soy?
Yes, the label indicates that the product contains soy. The soy may come from the Green Select EGCG extract which has a little bit of soy. Generally soy is not a problem for most people.
How To Return Leptigen
The supplement came with a 120-day money-back guarantee. Before returning Leptigen call their customer service department at 800-555-3951. You need to get a return merchandise number (RMA number) and this needs to accompany anything that is returned. The product website says you have 120 days -from the time they order the supplement- to return it.
To get a refund, you have to include a copy of your sales receipt too (or a note with your order number, name address email address phone number) and a reason why you are returning it.

Oddly, The product return page stated: “We cannot accept returns on overly used products.” What does “overly used products” mean?
How Much Does It Cost?
The supplement was about $110 for a bottle containing 60 capsules. Update, the product website also listed 3 options for buying
- Option 1: “Best Value.” $89.95 for a 90 day supply plus 5 free gifts.
- Option 2: “Most Popular.” $99.95 for a 60 day supply plus 5 free gifts.
- Option 3: ” Getting Started.” $109.95 plus 5 free gifts.
Customer service said the free gifts consisted of:
- A meal planner
- Pedometer
- Capsule carrier
- Cheatsheet
- Tape measure
Leptigen Side Effects
The supplement is likly safe in most healthy people. For those not healthy here are some things to consider. This list is not complete:
- Start with less than suggested for the first weekS
- Stop taking the product – and other supplements – at least 2 weeks before surgery
- Don't take the product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Speak to your doctor if you have liver problems, heart problems, thyroid issues, have had a stroke/ blood pressure problems or are diabetic, have depression, emotional/psychiatric issues.
- Don't take Leptigen close to bedtime due to its caffeine content
- If you take any medications, show the ingredients to your doctor/pharmacist first.
Does Leptigen Work?
Leptigen has no clinical studies to know if it works or not. However, there are a few studies on Meratrim which is an ingredient as well as Green Select Phytosome.
I signed up for the trial size bottle of 60 pills. It shipped to my mailbox within five days and I took them for one day. The amount of caffeine made me jittery and unable to sleep so I called on the seventh day and cancelled. They let me keep the bottle and told me to try taking one pill a day instead of two. The call took about three minutes, the customer service representative was very friendly and I’m still able to try leptigen.
My card was only charged the shipping fee for the bottle. Taking one pill in the morning doesn’t bother me so I am going to continue doing that and hopefully it still helps me lose weight.
Leptigen is a border line SCAM!
First, lets face the facts that no 2 people have the exact same body chemistry. So, what may work for you may not work for someone else. With that out of the way, I want to explain my recent situation with this company.
I did the FREE trial. I was on another website looking at reviews. No where did it say clearly that after SEVEN days if not returned they would charge you $90.00! Furthermore, they did not provide instructions on how to return the product.
Well, I took this product for 4 days and it did not make me feel well. Stomach was all in knots and overall I felt terrible (maybe due to my body chemistry). So I emailed the customer service about returning the product because right next to the FREE trial was a big pretty picture that says 120 DAY RETURN POLICY.
So customer service emailed me back saying my reoccurring order would be cancelled. Wait…since when did my FREE trial become a reoccurring $90 order? So I emailed them back requesting how to take advantage of the 120 day return policy. I never received an email back.
So I call them this morning and was told that the FREE trial DOES NOT have a 120 return policy. That the free trial was under different rules then the EXACT SAME product. The only difference according to the customer service rep is that one was a free trial, plus shipping, then after 7 days it is becomes a $90 dollar bottle. The 120 return policy product is the EXACT same but cost $109.
What a rip off from an American Based company.
Hope this helps anyone considering buying this snake oil in pill form.

So I ordered the free bottle. I will call and cancel my autoship/membership after it ships… so will I still get charged 90 bucks? I didnt see where it said I had to return the bottle within a few days? What the heck! So i keep the pills, but return the empty bottle the same day I get it and I wont be charged? Im super confused@
THIS COMPANY IS A JOKE AND A RIP OFF! I got a FREE trail from them and was so excited to try this. I was waiting till Spring Break to try these so I was not busy with college/life.
So I got them and they have been sitting in the back of my desk. Little did I know a month later I would get a charged 90 dollars on my card. I called them very confused to what was going on. Than they said they sent a letter with my bottle saying that if I did not like the product to send it back, or they would charge my card for the FREE trail ….I NEVER GOT THAT!

Yes I had that happen to me with other companies. If it says Free Trial, it’s not. Nothing is ever FREE.

I used Leptigen & it worked. I lost 10 pounds within 60 days. A couple days after I stopped, I gained three pounds, without my eating or excise habits changing. Not sure if that due to excess water weight after you stop.
Not sure – would like to know why you gain some weight when you stop. A dierter always fears gaining the weight back once lost – so, I hope this isn’t a way to keep me ordering after the goal was reached.
It did work though
Suzy, the only think I can think of is that the 3 pounds you regained was glycogen (carbs stored in the muscle) and water. That often happens when people eat normally after going on a diet.

Hi…i have got my trial pack.. i am mother of 1 yr old n i feed her still but only once in day n 2 times in night.. can i take this medicine as i am not a full time breastfeeding mom? I also got the 14 day trial order it on the 2/3/16 i received it on the 2/9/16 and the trial starts on the day is order i don’t think is enough time to see if it works so i send them an email to cancel . I’m waiting for a reply

Hi Alisa, speak to your pharmacist. As I mentioned in my review one of the herbs may have an effect on the thyroid. This might interact with your thyroid medication. Show the herb I mentioned to your pharmacist and let me know what she/he thinks.

I started taking it two weeks ago via free bottle and cancelled the order very easily the next day. I did notice however a change in my mood a couple days ago. I started feeling anxious, depressed, and irritated and for no logical reason.
I thought about things I had changed in my diet and such and I have been healthier overall except the Leptigen is the only new thing i have been doing. I have been up crying the past three nights with insomnia and depression. I have stopped taking the pill and will let you know how I feel in a few days.

I just received my “free” sample supply with instructions that if I don’t cancel within 14 days of my initial order date I will be automatically charged $89.95 for my next shipment. Then they give a number to call to cancel. I called to cancel as I don’t want to spend that kind of money. They have an automated system that recognizes you when you call from the phone number they have on file. Your choices are: 1. Cancel, but get one more shipment for $38.95 or 2. Cancel and send back your “free” sample bottle.
So my point is be aware that you are not getting a “free” sample that you can cancel anytime. You’re going to pay at least $38.95 to try it, or at minimum the cost to ship it back without even trying it.
I’m mad as heck at myself for falling for such a scam and hope I can prevent others from the same fate. I’m doing ok with my weight loss with just diet and exercise, so I was stupid to think I could speed things up with a free sample.

Hi I am an 18yr old from New Zealand. I am 5’3 and 125lbs but I would like to weigh 115-120 pounds ideally. I exercise 3-4 times a week and eat healthily but havent noticed any weight loss. Are there any supplements that can help me shed the last 10lbs? (Preferably that I have access to in New Zealand but don’t bother researching that aspect!)
Hi Laura, sometimes its harder to lose 10 pounds than 50 pounds since the body has a weight that it feels most comfortable at. one guess is you are very close to that set point for your body. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this review! Just as an FYI to any fellow users who may have experienced depression as a side effect…. I took leptigen for about 10 days. Suddenly I was experiencing severe depression with suicidal ideas, coupled with a sense of impending doom.
I did not link it to the leptigen until it occurred to me that was the only change I’ve made except eating better and exercising. Of course eating better and exercise elevates mood so I can only assume at this point it was the leptigen.
I stopped taking it 3 days ago now and my depression symptoms seem to be dissipating. While there is no definite proof of depression as a side effect, I can only say experimentally it must have been the effect for me. Hope this helps someone else.

Ann, there several different types of Shredz supplements. What specific supplement are you referring to?
I tried this product for the trial period and found that it was ineffective. That is, not better results than simply lowering your calorie intake and exercising.
However, what is most disappointing is how difficult (and predictably so) is their cancellation process after the trial period. Any product that is easy to buy and sign up for should be just as easy to cancel.
I was on hold for over 30 minutes with being one of two people on the line…so the recording said. After the recording told me I was next in line, the message said that the representative was unavailable. I bet they would be available if I was on the phone to buy the product.
Left a voicemail requesting to cancel my membership and not charge my account any further. Let’s see how long it takes to get a call back.
The product did not work for me…which is fine. Everyone is different. However, poor customer service is inexcusable. Even if it is to cancel my business.
I wouldn’t recommend it simply on that basis…but there is also the fact it doesn’t work.

I thought i would give Leptigen a try since the ingredients did not seam to be harmful. Ive been taking Leptigen for 4 months now and I have lost a total of 10 lbs.
I have cut back on food intake and increased my daily exercise so I cannot say the Leptigen itself helped. It does not suppress your appetite. I still get hungry at the same times everyday.
I do not think this product is cost effective for the amount of weight I have lost. I have stopped it and will continue to attempt weight loss on my own. All in all I would give it a thumbs down.
Margaret, thanks for sharing and may I say congratulations on losing 10 pounds. It’s often said that every 1 pound we lose reduces the stress on the knees by 4 pounds. So by you losing 10 pounds, each step you take means 40 less pounds of stress on your knees!
