Kilgour MD is a hair-loss system created by dermatologist James Kilgour, MD. Its main products are the Prevention Scalp Serum and Treatment Scalp Serum. The company also sells shampoo and conditioner. The serums contain several ingredients commonly promoted for hair growth, including Capixyl, Redensyl, Procapil, AnaGain, caffeine, pumpkin extract, rosemary, and saw palmetto. Kilgour MD also has something most cosmetic hair serums do not have: a published study of the finished two-serum system. That sounds impressive. The details matter, though. I did not personally use Kilgour MD. My conclusions are based on the research, product information, and customer reports available as of August 1, 2026.
Quick Answer: Does Kilgour MD Work?
Kilgour MD may reduce shedding and improve visible thinning in some women.
In a four-month company-funded study, 43 women used both Kilgour MD serums every other day. Average shedding during a standardized combing test fell by 33.8% after 45 days, 51% after 90 days, and 60.3% after 120 days. Dermatologist ratings of visible hair loss improved by 11.1% at four months.
The results are encouraging, but the study had no placebo group, randomization, or blinding. It tested both serums together. Researchers visually judged whether the hair looked denser, but they did not measure new hair growth, hair count, or hair diameter.
My opinion: Kilgour MD has preliminary evidence that its combined serums may reduce shedding. The study does not prove that the system regrows hair or works as well as minoxidil.
What Is Kilgour MD?
Kilgour MD separates its system into two leave-in scalp serums:
The Prevention Scalp Serum is intended to reduce shedding and support the scalp.
The Treatment Scalp Serum is intended to encourage thicker, fuller-looking hair.
The company currently instructs customers to apply about 1 mL of each serum every day. The women in the published study applied 1 mL of each serum every other day after washing their hair.
The shampoo and conditioner appear to be supporting products. They do not appear to be the products tested in the published Kilgour clinical study.

Is There Research on Kilgour MD?
Yes. A study of the combined Prevention and Treatment serums was published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2026. The study title is Efficacy of a Dual-Serum Cosmetic System in Women With Female Pattern Hair Loss. Dr James Kilgour is one of the authors of the study.
What the Kilgour MD Clinical Trial Found

Results
Average hair shedding fell:
- 33.8% after 45 days
- 51% after 90 days
- 60.3% after 120 days
The dermatologist’s rating of visible thinning did not change significantly at day 45. It improved by 8.2% at day 90 and 11.1% at day 120. In my opinion these are modest improvements. No adverse effects were reported during the trial.
The improvement over time makes the study more interesting than a simple customer survey.
What the Kilgour MD Study Does Not Prove
The trial does not prove that Kilgour MD works better than minoxidil.
It also does not prove that 98% of typical customers will regrow hair.
Study Problems
The study had no placebo or comparison treatment. Without a control group, we cannot measure how much of the improvement was specifically caused by the serums.
There are five other limitations:
- It's a small study that included only 43 people.
- All participants were women.
- Both serums were used together.
- The company funded the study.
- We do not know whether the results continue after four months.
The published Kilgour MD study did not include a minoxidil group. So there's no proof that Kilgour works better or as well as minoxidil.
Bottom line: The study is a reason to take Kilgour MD more seriously than many cosmetic hair serums. However, the research presented is not the same quality of evidence as a large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Caffeine, Pumpkin Seed and Rosemary Hair Research
Caffeine
Topical caffeine has some supportive research. It is not as well proven as minoxidil.
Kilgour MD contains caffeine in the Treatment Serum, but its concentration is not disclosed. Therefore, we cannot tell whether the dose resembles the 0.5% caffeine used in published research.

Pumpkin Seed
The Treatment Serum contains pumpkin cotyledon extract.
This should not automatically be treated as the same ingredient as pumpkin seed oil. Some research suggests pumpkin seed oil may be effective at regrowing hair. Some suggest that oils in pumpkin seeds inhibit 5-alpha-reductase. This is an enzyme implicated in hair loss. Pumpkin seeds also contain beta-sitosterol, a plant compound that also inhibits the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. Rosemary
The rosemary study is often described online as proving rosemary oil works as well as minoxidil. That is an exaggeration.
The study most people refer to found no statistically significant difference between rosemary oil and 2% minoxidil after six months. A finding of “no significant difference” does not automatically prove the treatments are equivalent.
The study also used rosemary oil. Kilgour MD lists rosemary leaf extract.

Saw Palmetto and Piroctone Olamine
Saw palmetto inhibits 5-alpha-reductase. In one study of a standardized saw palmetto extract (containing 2-3% beta-sitosterol), both topical and oral versions reduced hair fall by over 20% after one month.
As for Piroctone olamine, a six-month study noted increased hair-shaft diameter, although it did not significantly increase hair density.
Kilgour MD Side Effects and Complaints
No adverse effects were reported in the 43-woman clinical trial. That does not mean side effects are impossible.
Kilgour MD products contain fragrance. People with eczema, fragrance allergies or a highly sensitive scalp may want to perform a patch test before applying either serum over a large area.
Stop using the product and contact a healthcare provider if you develop severe itching, burning, swelling, sores or rapidly worsening hair loss.

Is Kilgour MD a Scam?
I would not call Kilgour MD a scam.
It is a real company selling clearly identified products. Its two-serum system has been tested in a published human study. The formulas do not secretly contain minoxidil.
The strongest evidence supports the possibility of reduced shedding after several months of combined serum use. Claims implying that Kilgour MD is proven better than minoxidil are not supported but studies at this time.

Does Kilgour MD contain minoxidil?
No minoxidil appears in the company’s ingredient lists for the Prevention Serum, Treatment Serum, shampoo or conditioner.
Can men use Kilgour MD?
The ingredients are not inherently limited to women, and some ingredient studies included men.
However, the Kilgour MD clinical trial included women only. We do not know whether men would experience the same results.
How long does Kilgour MD take to work?
The Kilgour MD study reported reduced shedding after 45 days. Visible thinning did not improve significantly at that point. Dermatologist-rated improvement became significant after 90 days and increased further by 120 days. Expecting major regrowth after only a few weeks is not realistic.
Can Kilgour MD be used with minoxidil?
The company provides information about combining its products with other treatments, but using several products at once makes it difficult to know which one is helping or causing irritation.
Ask a dermatologist before combining treatments, especially if you have heart or blood-pressure problems, use prescription hair-loss medication or have an inflamed scalp.

Does Kilgour MD work for telogen effluvium?
The finished-product study enrolled women with active shedding and female-pattern hair loss. It did not establish Kilgour MD as a treatment for every cause of telogen effluvium.
Telogen effluvium can be triggered by illness, rapid weight loss, childbirth, stress, iron deficiency, thyroid problems and medications. Treating the cause matters more than choosing a cosmetic serum.
Does Kilgour MD work for GLP-1 hair loss?
Kilgour MD markets its products to people who notice shedding while using GLP-1 medications. However, the published clinical trial was not specifically designed to test GLP-1-associated hair loss. Claims like this may be more hype than actual proof.
What happens when you stop using Kilgour MD?
The published study followed women for four months and did not establish what happens after the serums are stopped.
Hair benefits from most topical treatments usually require continued use. Therefore, if it works for you, it makes sense that benefits would stop after you stop using it.
Are the shampoo and conditioner clinically tested for hair growth?
I found no peer-reviewed human study of the finished Kilgour MD shampoo or conditioner.
The published Kilgour MD trial tested the Prevention and Treatment serums together. It should not be used as proof that the shampoo or conditioner regrows hair.

Kilgour MD Review: My Verdict
Kilgour MD is more interesting than the average botanical hair serum because the complete two-serum system has been tested in women with active hair loss.
The results suggest that consistent use may reduce shedding and gradually improve the appearance of thinning hair.
I would still like to see:
- A larger study that included a placebo group
- Studies that test each serum by itself
- A direct comparison with minoxidil
- Published ingredient percentages
- Longer follow-up to see what happens after treatment stops
- Trials in men and younger women
The current evidence does not prove Kilgour MD works as well as or better than minoxidil.
This also does not mean the products do not work. There is a published human study, and the results deserve attention. They just need to be kept in perspective.
My opinion: Kilgour MD may be worth considering for someone who wants a drug-free topical system, understands the limits of the research and is comfortable with the cost. I would not use it as a substitute for finding out why the hair loss is happening.
