Updated 8/27/20. Have you heard of Formula 1? If not, you've likely heard of the company that sells it―Herbalife. Can Formula 1 meal replacement shakes help people lose weight? Are there any side effects? Is there any research on these meal shakes? Actually, yes, there is research on Formula 1 and that will be the main focus of this review.
What Is Formula 1 Used For?
On the Herbalife website, it's stated that “Formula 1 shakes include protein, fiber and essential nutrients that can help support metabolism, cellular growth repair, and production.” I take this to mean Formula 1 is a meal replacement shake. Meal replacement shakes are meant to be used when people don't have time to eat real food. They are often used as after-workout shakes also. I don't see any specific mention in the above statement that Formula 1 meal shakes are to be used for weight loss except maybe the vague words “support metabolism.”
Who Makes Formula 1 Shakes?
Formula 1 shakes are made by Herbalife. Unlike several supplement companies I've reviewed previously, Herbalife is a real company that has a physical brick-and- motor building. The address of Herbalife is 800 West Olympic Blvd., Suite 406, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The building says “Herbalife” on the side, so I know this is their official place of business.
If you search the Better Business Bureau for “Herbalife”, you will see a LOT of small businesses. This goes to the fact that the bulk of the selling of Herbalife products comes from people who are Herbalife distributors. Herbalife at its core has a strong multi-level marketing component. You have to search for Herbalife International of America to find the BBB report on the business.
The BBB gives Herbalife a B+ rating when this review was updated. It notes that Herbalife was started in 1980 and has been a BBB accredited business since 1990. It lists 400 employees, however, I'm sure that doesn't include the many thousands of Herbalife distributors around the world.

It's important to know that the Herbalife website also says to “remember to add fresh fruit and ice” to Formula 1. This means that the nutrition information (and calories) listed above will be different, depending on the type of fruit and amount of fruit that is added.
This idea of adding fruit to Formula 1, reminds me of Shakeology where I wondered “why would you need the extra fruit if it was already so healthy?”
Formula 1 is certified gluten-free. For those who are interested, formula 1 also contains soy protein isolate and fructose. The nutrition label does indicate that the product contains “Milk and Soy” however, soy is the first ingredient listed while casein (which comes from milk) is the ninth ingredient. I take this to mean that most of the protein in Formula 1 is derived from soy. The label does not indicate if the soy is genetically modified or Non-GMO soy.
Formula 1 also contains a fiber called inulin. The Formula 1 label calls inulin “a prebiotic that helps promote the growth of flora.”
Prebiotics are basically the food of probiotic bacteria.
While that may be true, inulin is a soluble fiber found in many foods. For example, inulin is also found in “Fiber One” cereal. According to a Nutrition Action Newsletter in 2008, (click to read the pdf file), “it's not clear if inulin is as good as a foods naturally occurring fibre.” Formula 1 doesn't have a lot of inulin since it's the 17th ingredient listed on the label.
Inulin is also in the IdealShape weight-loss shake so see that for more information.
The nutrition label also mentions that Formula 1 contains “Aminogen” This is a trademarked name for a protein-digesting enzyme complex that I've seen in a few other supplements such as Syntheriod and the Body By Vi Shakes. Aminogen is a product of another company called Triacaro Industries. I don't think there is anything special about Aminogens, especially for people who can digest protein.
Formula 1 And Weight Loss
Even though Herbalife doesn't specifically mention this, there is a lot of talk on the web about how Formula 1 can help people lose weight. So what might cause this? Looking at the ingredients, I think this is because a serving of Formula 1 only has 90 calories (170 calories, if milk was used, and more calories if additional fruit is added). So, if a person were to drink two Formula 1 shakes and then eat dinner, I'm pretty sure they would lose weight.
If I am right and Formula 1 helps people lose weight because it acts as a substitute for higher-calorie foods, then this is the same premise behind other weight loss shakes I've looked at including :
- Right Size Smoothies (100 calories)
- Body By Vi Shakes (90 calories)
- Shakeology (140 calories)
- Isagenix Shake (240 calories)
There is nothing wrong with this, as long as it does not lead to nutritional deficiencies. If a person were taking a multivitamin and eating at least halfway decent, I don't think this would be a problem. That said, I'd personally like to see more protein to Formula 1 if it is used for weight loss. Keep reading for my reasons why.
Formula 1 Weight Loss Research
On the website herbalifescience.com there is a page that discusses 3 clinical studies that used Formula 1 Healthy Meal. These studies are used to support the notion of how the formula 1 meal shake can be a healthy addition to the diet.
It appears that all 3 studies were conducted by members of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board. That's not necessarily bad. Companies that invest time, money and effort into their products is a rare thing. I actually like to see this. That said, let's take a look briefly at each study.
Herbalife Formula 1 Study #1
In a study that does not seem to be published yet titled ” Increased Protein Intake Using Protein—Enriched Meal Replacements Compared to Conventional Protein Intake and Meal Replacements in Overweight Subjects” Researchers gave 110 overweight people different amounts of protein for a year.
Formula 1 shakes ―as well as another protein supplement― were given to the high protein group. Others were just told to eat less and try to get a normal amount of protein.
The researchers noted that drinking 2 Formula 1 shakes (that were enhanced with additional protein) “lead more effective weight-management than limiting calories alone”.
While this is interesting, notice they didn't say people lost more weight. For me, saying “more effective weight management” is very fuzzy language. They might have lost more weight but I'd like to see them actually say it.
I must also note that this study does not prove that Formula 1 itself leads to weight loss because researchers gave people Formula 1 PLUS extra protein (the supplement was called “European Personalized Protein Powder.”) To me, this is a weakness of this study.
Herbalife Formula 1 Study #2
In a study published in 2008 in Nutrition Journal, titled A controlled trial of protein enrichment of meal replacements for weight reduction with retention of lean body mass, researchers gave 100 obese men and women (85 people completed the study) the same number of calories for 12 weeks. The difference: One group received more protein.
The high protein group received 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day) while the regular protein group received 1.1 grams per kilogram of body weight.
Translation:
- High protein group: 2.2 grams per kilogram = 1 gram of protein per pound.
- Low protein group: 1.1 grams per kilogram = 0.5 grams of protein per pound.
Both groups were given Herbalife Formula 1 but the high protein group had their Formula 1 shakes enhanced with another Herbalife supplement called Performance Protein Powder. Those in the standard protein group (1.1 grams per day) had a carbohydrate powder added to their Formula 1 shakes.
Study Results:
- Both groups lost similar amounts of weight.
- There were no changes between the groups in blood fats (triglycerides) or fasting glucose levels.
- There were no changes in waist circumference between groups.
- The high protein group lost more body fat.
- The high protein group had significantly lower LDL and total cholesterol.
As I see it, the major finding of this study ―as far as weight loss is concerned― is that those who received more protein lost more body fat.
A possible problem with this study was that body fat was determined with bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA). This method is often seen as less reliable than other ways such as Bod Pod or underwater weighing.
This study used a BIA device called 310e Bioimpedance analyzer which works by placing electrodes at the ankle and wrist. This is different than the hand-held devices found in health clubs around the world. Theoretically, this device might be more accurate, but I'd still expect that it could be influenced by many factors.
Also, it's important to note that this study didn't just use Formula 1 but Formula 1 that had additional protein added to it.
Herbalife Formula 1 Study #3
In 2009 a study called Efficacy of low-calorie, partial meal replacement diet plans on weight and abdominal fat in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome: a double-blind, randomized controlled trial of two diet plans – one high in protein and one nutritionally balanced was published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice.
In this 12 week, double-blind study,75 obese people were randomly assigned to either these 2 groups:
- Low calorie / high protein group (Formula 1 + Personalized Protein Powder).
- Low calorie / normal protein group (Formula 1 + milk).
The women ate 1200 per day and the men consumed 1500 calories per day.
Study Results
1. Both groups lost weight and fat in the belly.
2. Researchers noted that in those who “followed the diet most strictly, people in the high protein group lost more body fat (and less lean body mass) than the people consuming the standard amount of protein.”
In other words, people who stuck to the diet – AND ate more protein ―lost more body fat.
It's worth noting again, Formula 1 was modified with additional protein.
I also found this next investigation (“Study 4″) which is not listed on the herbalifesciences website. I'm including it because the principal author (Marion Flechtner-Mors) is also the principal author of study #1. She is also on the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board.
Herbalife Formula 1 Study # 4
In 2010 a study was published in the journal, Diabetes Metabolism Research Reviews. In this investigation, titled Enhanced weight loss with protein-enriched meal replacements in subjects with the metabolic syndrome, 110 overweight people followed for a year and were told to eat 500 less calories per day and randomly assigned to:
- A high protein group (1.34 grams per kilogram of body weight)
- A low protein group (0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight)
Translation: the high protein group received 0.61 grams per pound and the low protein group received 0.36 grams per pound ―the normal RDA for protein.
This study makes no mention of Formula 1, so I assume it was not used.
Results:
1. Those in the high protein group lost more weight and fat than those in the lower protein group.
2. Measurements of diabetes progression (CRP, A1c, HDL, insulin levels, etc.) improved in both groups although it was deemed slightly better in the high protein group.
3. Similar losses in fat-free mass were seen in both groups.
So again, we see higher protein intake was associated with more weight loss.
Study Problem: In this investigation body fat was measured with bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) which is seen as less accurate than other methods.
Summary: Formula 1 Weight Loss Research
Looking at only the 3 studies used to support the use of Formula 1 meal shakes, I come to these conclusions:
1. None of the studies only used Formula 1.
3. All 3 studies increased the protein content in Formula 1.
4. Since protein was increased in all 3 studies, Formula 1 ―alone― cannot be guaranteed to produce the same results.
5. Using Bioelectric impedance analysis to determine body fat changes may not be as reliable as other methods.
If I look only at the research on the Herbalife website, it appears that even the researchers on the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board increase protein intake when studying Formula 1 meal replacement shakes for weight loss. If that's true, why doesn't Herbalife change the formula?
The idea of increased protein intake for weight loss is not new. Several studies have noted more weight loss in those who consumed a higher protein diet.
Let me be clear. I have no doubt that if people consumed two Formula 1 shakes per day and ate 1 “real” meal, that they would lose weight. I believe however, that weight loss would occur because overall calorie intake was reduced, rather than any special properties or ingredients in Formula 1. The protein in Formula 1 might help but I see no proof that it would work as well as the enhanced-Formula 1 studies shown on the Herbalifesciences website.
Herbalife Formula 1 Side Effects
At this time I'm not aware of any side effects from Formula 1. I believe that in healthy people, Formula 1 is safe. If anyone has experienced side effects please comment below. It's possible that the soy in Formula 1 may be a problem for some people so they need to consider this.
Those who this might be an issue include those with some types of cancer like breast cancer or endometrial cancer, which may -in theory-be activated by soy. This is a common warning with soy although direct human evidence is lacking. Still, for those with cancer, its something to talk to your oncologist about.
Soy might also reduce thyroid hormone levels. This is because soy contains compounds called goitrogens. This can be a problem for people with hypothyroidism. For those with hypothyroid problems, just don't drink the shake within 1-2 hours of taking your thyroid medicine (levothyroxine). If you do this, I don't think the Herbalife Formula 1 shake will have any effect on your thyroid hormone levels.
Soy is often blamed for causing hypothyroidism but this is not true. But, just for peace of mind, those who have hypothyroidism should get their TSH levels checked after a month or so of using Formula 1 to see if their thyroid meds need to be adjusted. I doubt if they would need to.
Formula 1 Price
I did not see a way to order Formula 1 directly at the Herbalife website so I'm not sure of the price. The majority of business Herbalife generates is through Herbalife associates.
As such, it's possible that different associates may sell Formula 1 for different prices. Here is a 30 day supply on Amazon to compare prices. Various Herbalife distributors also sell on eBay. As such it might be smart to shop around for the best price.
Contact Herbalife
The address for Herbalife International is 800 West Olympic Blvd., Suite 406, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The contact number is: 866-617-4273.
If you call this number, good luck, because you are only given 2 options:
1. Are you calling about a recent magazine radio or TV promotion (press 1)
2. Are you a customer calling about an existing order (press 2)
If you don't choose an option you are disconnected! Pressing zero for an operator doesn't work either. For a company that claims to have several hundred people in the organization (BBB statistics), I wasn't happy with their lack of easy customer support.
How To Return Formula 1
If you are not happy with Formula 1, I suggest either calling Herbalife directly at 866-617-4273 or by contacting the Herbalife distributor you bought the product from. I am not aware of any problems associated with returning Herbalife products. If you have had any problems returning products please comment below.
Does Formula 1 Work?
Let me first say that I don't think Formula 1 is bad. Looking at its ingredients, I don't see anything that I would call “extreme.” So, I have no problem with people who want to use Formula 1 as a meal replacement, if they can afford the cost. Do remember that there is nothing unique in Formula 1 that I'd expect to promote better health or superior weight loss over other shakes―such as the shake recipe I make.
Remember, if Formula 1 shakes are going to help people lose weight, they should be used in place of higher-calorie meals ―not in addition to them. For people eating 3-4 meals per day, I would not recommend more than 2 shakes per day since more than this might displace other valuable foods and nutrients from the diet. I do wish Herbalife would increase the protein content of Formula 1 because that is in keeping with their own weight loss research.
Here are all the flavors on Amazon
I first started herbalife because due to my busy work schedule, I wouldn’t be able to sit down and eat a normal meal, but I needed to eat something to maintain a healthy diet. I drink the formula 1 shakes twice a day, added with the herbalife protein powder and mix with milk and sometimes fruit. I also eat a healthy snack twice a day, along with one ‘real’ meal a day.
As long as you’re meeting your calorie/protein/etc intake a day, its a good meal replacement. I wouldn’t suggest to just drink the formula 1 for two meals and just one real meal without adding milk, protein, snacks, etc.
If you drop too many calories in your diet, you’re body will go into ‘starvation mode’ and you’ll do worse to your body then good. But you also don’t want to do the shakes and then say, go to mcdonalds for your one real meal, thinking you have all those calories that you need to intake, it needs to be a part of a healthy diet if you want to lose weight, tone up or whatnot.
All in all, I agree with the writer, I don’t see a problem in using the shakes for weight loss or a healthy diet, but it needs something added to it, not just drinking a 90 calorie shake per meal.
it has fructose which is metabolized in liver and converted into fats. kindly provide clarity.
Achal, you are correct Herbalife formula 1 does have fructose. It does raise triglyceride levels in the blood. Im not sure how much fructose the product has but I did notice it is the 2nd ingredient in the ingredients list. But how much that amounts to Im not sure. I noticed cellulose powder and corn bran – which I take to be fiber – 3rd and 4th ingredients listed. Do they mitigate the effects of fructose, as fiber does in fruits? I can’t say.
Company says it has upto 5 gm fructose in one serving.
Achal, thanks!
I just started using it and my program is to lose weight. They said have to lose body fats first so my meal plan only includes rice, fish or chicken and snacks would only be banana, apple of boiled egg. I am just alowed to eat half serving of veggies at dinner. would I get proper and balanced nutrition from this diet?
Eunice, overall it doesn’t sound too bad to me although I think you can have more than 1/2 serving of veggies at dinner and that’s because veggies tend to not have a lot of calories. My question is would eating this way – without the shake – be just as good for weight loss? I think it would be and that’s because it doesn’t sound like you are eating a lot of calories. The shake wont hurt but can you get the same results from just eating more fruits, veggies and healthy proteins? I think so. That’s something to consider if money is a factor.
Hey Joe, so Cleveland Clinic has a standard range of 30 – 149 mg/dL and my level is 93. So 3 to 4 shakes a day plus two snacks and a healthy meal and exercise 5 to 6 days a week are definitely not giving me bad triglyceride levels.
Herbalife is a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The products have been used by millions of people. Management has testified before the US Congress, they have been in business for 35 years, and are the leader in meal replacement shakes. If people were going to start dropping on us I am pretty sure we would have found the bodies by now.
The problem with Herbalife isn’t the products the problem is that people use the products incorrectly (whether that is the fault of the distributor or the customer). I hope that people are aware that Herbalife is available in over 91 countries. Now I understand that some countries may have lower standards as far as supplements are concerned but really. Does anyone think that after 35 years and all the different countries that the products have been accepted into that the products are somehow dangerous?
Wibb, thanks for sharing your numbers. Im glad you are within range.

YOUR DETAILED GUIDANCE SAVES MY LIFE.
Thank You.
Sree.
Hi Sree,
Sometimes when we exercise, we compensate for overeating. I dont know if that is the case with you but I wanted to mention it just in case. Even healthy food has calories which can overcompensate for what we burn when we exercise. Also, when we exercise we dont burn as many calories as most people think. That said here are some ideas that might help:
1. Eat food from smaller bowls and plates. drink from taller glasses
2. Weigh yourself every day
3. Drink a glass of water before eating
4. Chew your food 20 or more times before swallowing it
5. When working out periodically change what you do first – cardio or strength training
6. Put salad dressings on the side and not directly on the salad.
7. Eat something before food shopping – this prevents buying stuff you should stay away from.
8. Look at the website of the restaurant before going to it. look at their menu and decide what you want to eat before you get there.
9. Tell the waitress to not add any butter or salt to your food at a restaurant.
10. Include a little protein in each meal to stabilize blood sugar and curb appetite.
11. Track not only calories but also exercise. The Fitbit can help you do this.
12. Track your progress with free websites like MyFitnessPal.com (this is also a free app for your smart phone too).
Also look at the National Weight Control Registry. They are people who have been successful at losing a lot of weight and keeping it off
As far as supplements are concerned, I would not use any fat burners or stimulants. They often dont work, lack evidence and some can have side effects that I don’t feel are safe. Supplements that I feel are safest are those that contain fiber. Here are a few that have some studies on their effectiveness:
Psyllium fiber This is what is in Metamucil
FBCX (also known as Calorease)
Glucomannan fiber (also called Konjac root)
I generally like the fiber powder better than the pills because you can mix them with water or juice or in a smoothie. This adds to volume you are eating and can help fill you up more.
The key here if you use the supplements is to use them in conjunction with the other things you are doing. Just dont use them alone or I dont think they will work.
I hope some of this helps and also hope you are getting support on your efforts from your family and friends. Keep me posted on your progress.
I want to get more clarity on fructose in formula 1. My education tells that its high and contributes to fatty liver n belly fat. Plz help.
Achal, While I don’t know how much fructose is in the shake, I did look and Fructose is listed as the 2nd ingredient which I believe means there is a lot of it relative to the other ingredients. Fructose is found in fruit. its not the same thing as high fructose corn syrup. Fructose can increase triglyceride levels although Im not aware of any instances of the shake doing this.
Anyone else have ideas on this?
I just gave blood yesterday (Ohio, USA) for a basic lipid panel which will show my triglyceride levels. I went in for a routine physical and the blood work is customary at my age of 46. I’ll be happy to share them once I get the results back. I take 2-4 shakes a day and have regular meals/snacks about 3 to possibly 4 times a day as well.
My meal (2/day) shakes are typically the Formula 1 (2 scoops) with 1 scoop of the Protein Drink Mix. My workout shakes are Herbalife 24 Formula 1 Sport (2 scoops) first thing in the morning before the workout and then a Herbalife 24 Rebuild (2 scoops) shake after the workout if it was an intense workout.
I add various fruits, Chia and Flax seeds to my shakes for added fiber, protein, and antioxidants. I have been taking the Herbalife shakes since the winter of 2013. I started out to lose weight but have now started with a muscle mass regimen after losing 40 lbs. FYI the Herbalife 24 shakes are whey protein isolate and the regular Formula 1 and PDM are soy based. In my opinion a mix of both seems to be generally accepted as effective.
My MAIN concern with my diet (I use that word to refer to what one eats in a day not diet as in Atkins) is the amount of sugar I take in. Based on what I have written above my intake with Herbalife is about 34 to 43 grams of sugars a day just with the shakes. Add the fruit and other smaller amounts from assorted other foods and that’s gotta be another 8-12 grams.
If I had a gripe about Herbalife it would be to try to reduce the sugars. At least it is mainly fructose. The Herbalife 24 line uses Stevia in the Rebuild formula. Ultimately I also realize that the typical American diet has much more of a myriad of sugars than I get with Herbalife shakes. I look forward to my test results.
Wibb, thanks I’m sure everyone would be interested in knowing your triglyceride levels 🙂
Hi Joe, congratulations for your review, I´m a herbalife member for 9 years, I drink my formula 1 shake with protein powder, I also take fiber and vitamins tablets, I used 2 shakes a day, breakfast and dinner, for lunch a healthy balanced meal.
I lost 20 kg, in a long-run diet plan and works with me, now I also take it as a portable meal replacement, when I work out, bike or go to surf.
I learn a lot in this years about nutrition and supplements, going to nutrition meetings in Herbalife, or simply by testimonials and success stories, helping people feeling better, having a healthy breakfast, changing their bad food habits.
Thanks you for your honest review, and for everyone interested in a healthy shake meal, try it for a month, follow the indications, advise with you doctor and herbalife member and don´t forget to drink 6 to 8 cups of water every day!
Rodrigo, thanks much and a big congrats on losing 20 kilograms (that’s 44 pounds for us in the USA) 🙂
Hi, great article thanks. How would you compare the formula 1 to http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garden-Life-Organic-Replacement-Chocolate/dp/B007S6Y6VS ? I am about to buy one of the 2. I am a bit worried about the soy and fructose amount in the formula 1. 🙂
Hi Gina, thanks. Ive heard of the Raw Meal but have not yet reviewed it formally. People have said that they like it but I do remember some saying they did not like the taste. That’s about all I could say about it at the moment. Glad you found my Herbalife review helpful 🙂
Thank you for your contributions of product reviews! Have you actually found ANY weightloss products/supplements that actually DO have proof they work and are WORTH TRYING? It is difficult to distinguish what products you rate potentially effective. I would really appreciate any input.
Marcia, thanks I appreciate that! There have been some products that have had some interesting research. I listed some of them on this post, which is at my personal site. I also listed other things that can help too. http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
Thank You So Much, Joe!!
Marcia, you are very welcome 🙂
Hi there, im just starting out with Herbalife to lower my body fat percentage and get more out of my workouts. however im reading a lot of negative reviews about people who have experienced serious setbacks as soon as they stopped taking herbalife.
i dont really plan on being reliant on shakes for the rest of my life, have you found any proven research on side effects once discontinuing the shakes?
Steph, for what it’s worth I’m not aware of any side effects as as to what happens when people stop herbalife formula 1 shakes. I’d think that like anything else, if the shakes are replaced by older eating habits (higher calorie foods), the weight might eventually return. For all weight loss shakes, maintaining adequate calorie intake after cessation I feel is key to long term success.
I’d like to say Steph, the reason most people see “set backs” in their weight isn’t because of the Herbalife products. It’s because they return to the eating habits that they had BEFORE being on Herbalife. I’ve been a distributor for a year and a half and have had many customers do this. Here at Herbalife we teach people how to live a Healthy Active LIFESTYLE. We aren’t just some fad or diet. We promote a lifestyle for the rest of your life. Even if you choose not to use Herbalife products after a period of time, we have at least instilled the culture of living healthy.
Also to add to the article: most consumers of formula 1 add Protein Drink Mix to our shakes. It ups the calories to about 220, adds more minerals and vitamins, and brings the protein level to 24g. Not to mention the heavenly taste it brings:)
At retail, a canister runs about $38. Now understand that Herbalife products are only available through Independent Herbalife Distributors. I HIGHLY do not recommend buying from Amazon or eBay, even if it’s a little cheaper, because there have been instances wear non distributors have gotten a hold of empty canisters and filled them with plain flour or other things. If you choose to purchase Herbalife Products please do so from certified Independent Distributors! Hope this helped!
Caleb, That’s interesting what you said about most of your customers adding protein to the Formula 1 Shake. If that’s true, why doesn’t Herbalife just add extra protein to the shake to better reflect what many/most people do?
I think that’s a bit of scare tactics about buying from Amazon and ebay. Even if it did happen, I’d bet the rate is very low and Amazon and Ebay have ways to protect customers.
I do agree that Herbalife has been around a long time.
Hey Joe, sorry i havent replied in a long time.. the reason Herbalife dosent pre mix their shakes is because different people require different amounts of protein. They leave it out so customers can better control their protein consumption, besides the regular protein mix Herbalife also has a personalised protein powder so they can adjust how muxh protein they add to their shake.
Dustin, that personalized protein powder is pretty low in protein – only 5 grams of protein per tablespoon. Considering that it would take 4 tablespoons to equal an extra 20 grams of protein and there are 60 servings per container, that means a container would only last about 15 days. Give that its about $30 per container, That’s a LOT of money to pay for such a small amount of protein (about $60/month).
I agree with Joe on this one. But like I said most people I know use the Protein Drink Mix. One serving is two scoops, just like the formula one. The two canisters together are about $90-$95 so that’s roughly $3.30 a shake. That’s pretty good for a fully balances healthy meal if you ask me.
I just think that’s a lot of money but to each is own.
True but its ment to be used as an extra additive along with rhe regular protein just to add some extra. If you wanted to add that much extra protein you would add an extra scoop of the regular protein powder.
And just what, exactly, qualifies Herbalife distributors to “teach” people about nutrition, fitness, and an overall healthy lifestyle? I’m just curious…
Hi guys. Your research was not well done and that’s okay. Herbalife has several protein enhancers which are easily added to formula 1 has a multi vitamin And so on. I atrophied after a back injury I and have since put on 78 lbs of muscle measured various ways. I also weighed over 440lbs and have lost 175lbs of measurable fat. We use a proton nuclear resonance imaging machine in our quality control processes and own our own sources of tea and soy.
We also have allergy free, kosher, gluten free, and whey based formula one. Herbalife independent distributor Billy Elder.
Hi Billy, no guys here, just me who wrote it. I appreciate your alacrity for Herbalife but I used your very own research in my review. Why should any enhancers be needed? Why not just add them to the shake during processing? Glad to hear about your good results with the product.
Thank you so much for your quick reply! I hope you don’t mind my asking these questions (and I do have more!). I’m a “geek” too, and this is the only website I’ve come across (after looking at many) with honest, comprehensive, scientifically based reviews.
I started Herbalife as a way to maintain a low calorie diet with my hectic schedule. I really love it, I think the shakes are delicious, but I don’t want to sacrifice health for taste. Can I ask more questions?
Good morning sheryl, sure thing ask away! I love talking about this stuff 🙂
Thank you! I’m so happy to have found your website… I feel no Herbalife distributor would give me such honest and well researched answers. So here goes:
1) as I said, despite the amazing taste, I don’t want to sacrifice health for taste, especially since I’m drinking the Formula 1 shakes twice a day… Would you say I should feel comfortable continuing with them?
2) What is your opinion regarding organic options like Garden of Life Raw Meal (though, again, I like Herbalife taste much better)?
3) it sounds like you trust the company and feel that the Herbalife “enhancer ” supplements are safe for a healthy individual. But do you feel they are a benefit for weight loss, in addition to the calorie reduction and regular exercise? If so, which ones? Florafiber, which contains glucomannan? or Thermabond which contains sodium choleate- is that even helpful in a person with a functioning gallbladder? Or others they sell in the various packages? I’ve also considered just shakes and separate glucomannen.
Overall I want to do something I’ll happily continue, feeling satisfied, but at no major risk to my health… What would you say?
Again thank you so much, and btw, your book looks great… It’s in my Amazon cart.
Hi Sheryl,
Let me try to address each of your questions as you asked them:
1. Overall I don’t have a problem with the Formula 1 shake especially if you are eating well during the day. Since it a bit low in protein, its good to get adequate protein at your other meals like dinner. The advantage of many meal replacement shakes is that their convenient for those with time constraints. That said I do think blending together some fruits and veggies together would be healthier overall. Here is a shake I like to make.
2. I have not yet reviewed Garden for Life Raw meal but some people have told me it doesn’t taste very good.
3. I don’t think you need the Florafiber because its probably an epensive version of glucomannan which is pretty inexpensive.
As for the Thermo-Bond, If It has sodium-chelate, I’m not sure what weight loss effect that has. I don’t think it has any. When I see the word “thermo” I think “stimulant.” I mention that because when I looked at the ingredients in Thermo-bond and I noticed they listed “citrus” as an ingredient. That was a vague name and I’d have to see the actual ingredients label to be sure but there is an ingredient derived from citrus called bitter orange. That ingredient is a stimulant that can raise heart rates and blood pressures. Again, I cant be sure unless I see the actual bottle. Even if Im wrong, it just appears to be a fiber supplement – and it doesn’t provide much fiber either (just 2 grams if you take 6 tablets).
4. for something that will make you feel satisfied (filled up) and be good for your health, Id say the best overall choice is something you can make yourself –like a fruit/veggie smoothie with some added protein. It may not be as ready made as some other shakes but I can make the shake I linked to above in just 5 minutes. Id say that would be best of all but if that’s not possible then a ready made shake this the formula 1 shake or even the Isogenix shake can be good alternatives.
I hope you like my book 🙂
Thank you again! I really appreciate the time you’ve spent reading and answering my questions. Your smoothie recipe sounds delicious, I will definitely try it!
Sheryl, sounds good Im glad to help and let me know how you like the smoothie. Have a great sunday 🙂
Hi, thank you Joe, your article and all responses are very informative and appreciated. I’ve been using the formula 1 shakes with personalized protein powder for several weeks. They are delicious and keep me satisfied which are great motivators to continue. I’ve lost about 2 lbs a week.
I’d like to use enhancers, however, as I’m doctor, I’m concerned about side effects of the supplements. I’ve researched many of the main ingredients contained in some and they do indeed seem safe.
However, as with many supplements they are not FDA approved or regulated. Can I feel confident that they are safe to take? In addition, I am curious as to your opinion on the reports regarding liver damage that surfaced several years ago. Compared to the millions of people who have used herbalife, the cases seem anecdotal, but I thought I’d ask.
Lastly, I am wondering about your take on Herbalife vs the more “natural” meal replacements like Shakeology. Sorry this is so long! Thanks!!
Hi Sheryl, If I had to chose between the formula 1 shake and Shakeology, I would pick the Formula 1 shake. While most shakes have a bit of hype about them, Shakeolgy has way too much for my taste. Speaking of taste, I didn’t like how it tasted. Here is my Shakeology review. Notice what Consumerlab found…
There is some regulation of supplements. Its called the dietary supplement health and education act. Its a very loose regulation. Basically supplements are regulated as foods. Companies are on the honor system when it comes to what they put in products. Most companies I feel play by the rules. Others maybe not so much.
I do remember the liver issues from herbalife years ago. Here’s one such review that discusses it
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3004035/
It’s hard to know what might have been the cause of it. For what its worth, I’m not aware of anything recent when it comes to herbalife and liver. Most of the liver-toxicity stuff I hear about these days concerns green tea-containing supplements.
There used to be concern over hydroxy citric acid (garcinia cambogia) and liver toxicity. There are several case reports on this. I outlined them in my review of garcinia cambogia. Here is the link: http://supplementclarity.com/garcinia-cambigoa-hca-review-weight-loss-research/
When it comes to weight loss, I think the best evidence comes from products that contain fiber. For example, many such products contain a fiber called glucomannan. Here is a link to my personal website where I discuss those products that I feel have most of the positive weight loss research: http://www.joe-cannon.com/what-weight-loss-supplements-work/
I hope that helps. Any other questions, just ask 🙂
Hi, im taking herbal shake for 3 days now and my coach check my status again, my muscle mass increased and also i gain 1lb. But for the past 2 days i dont drink too much water. Is m result okay for weight loss? Today is my 3rd day and i drunk 1.10 liter s of water already and i keep urinating.
Cess I think it’s normal to urinate a lot after drinking that much water especially if it’s a new activity. I don’t think your muscle mass increased after only 3 days though. How is your coach determining your muscle mass? Are you standing on a scale or holding a gizmo out in front of you?
I been drinking herbalife shakes for over 8 years now, the first seven months I went from size 16 plus to size 12 without any exercise, 3 years ago I join an exercise class 4 days a week for one hour, went from size 12 to 6 on a period of 4 months. I am 56 years old,
i am tone and have a lot of energy, keep exercising at least twice a week, keeping my weight and size. BUT my success is not in weight and size loss but instead on the increase of my health…before herbalife I had very high cholesterol but refuse to start medication and that same year I had 3 colonscopies due to chronic constipation…HERBALIFE was my way out of a life of pharmacos….
Still replace 2 meals for my shake, protein bar for a snack and a very healthy and colorful
meal following the plate diet.
Are you still replying to comments/questions on this article?
Vlad, of course. Ask your question or post your comment.
So i know someone who works at an herbalife club. They sell these 3 day packs for $15. Its supposed to have 3 days, 2 shakes a day of the formula 1, with added protein. Is that a reasonable price or would i be better off buying the powders on amazon myself?
Also I’ve heard/read from a bunch of people that once you stop it people tend to put the weight they lost back on extremely quickly. Is that mostly an issue of said people going back to their old diet? how likely will that happen if you maintain a healthier diet than you previously had but no longer use herbalife
Vlad, Are the 3 day packs all the formula 1 shake? So at $15, thats over $30 per week or about $120 per month. I guess it’s all about how you do the math. $120 per month is a lot in my book. I believe the weight lost will return if people go back to their old eating habits and thats true for all diets as well. How likely is it to happen, I can’t say. it would depend on the person. Id say look at how much it costs for the 3 day packs and compare that to what you see online.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QW9B5Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001QW9B5Q&linkCode=as2&tag=sgtextlink-20
I see that price roughly online, anywhere from $30-40 ish, im not sure how the amounts work, how many shakes that will make etc
Vlad, I can see how that would be confusing – the label is in Spanish. As far as I can tell the label doesn’t tell us how many shakes it would make. But, it does say say that the container you linked to has 750 grams. That is about 26 oz.
I searched the Herbalife website and found healthy meal labels that listed a serving as being 2 scoops (52 grams). That means if you used used 2 scoops, you would have about 14 servings (14 shakes) in that container. I got that by doing this math: 750/52 =14 servings (14 shakes). That is if you used 2 scoops. If you only used 1 scoop, you would be able to get 28 servings.
Does that help?
Vlad, if you know someone who works at the Herbalife fitness club why aren’t you asking them these questions? The packs you are talking about are for a three day trial pack that Herbalife makes available for people to try Herbalife products. NO WAY do you want to continue to buy those packs because they make no sense money wise.
If you plan on using Herbalife for months or years your best bet is to become an Herbalife member. You pay a yearly fee of (my wife knows this) something less than $100. With that you get the full starter pack which includes the formula product and the tea and the pills. You also start out at a discount (25% I think) that is good for the year of your membership. If you reach a certain level of purchases the discount goes up. The max is 50%.
Vlad and Joe one of the biggest things about the Herbalife system is that you get coaching from your sponsor. My wife and I spend hours every week talking to the people we sponsor making sure that they are exercising and eating right. Questions about products and discounts and possibilities to earn money and lots more is what we are there for.
Vlad, get on the Internet and search every weight loss or work-out to get fit program out there. When you find over a thousand of them then come back to me and ask me if you will gain weight after you do any of these programs. Your question seems to me that you expect to lose weight or get fit and then STOP what you have done to get you to the point of your lost weight goal.
So if that is your goal then I am willing to bet you that whatever form of weight loss program you choose to do and then STOP DOING will result in you gaining weight back. This is the biggest problem with all the books and the shakes and the whatever you can think of to lose weight. If you STOP you will gain weight again unless you change what you eat and at least try to do some moderate exercise.
By changing what you eat you need to focus on eating about 1800 calories or less a day. So in answer to your question above you can stop Herbalife and eat healthy and you will have a much better chance of keeping the weight off.
My wife and I both lost about 35 lbs each over 8 months ago and we haven’t gained the weight back. We continue to take the shakes everyday though because they are too convenient and too inexpensive when compared to trying to eat regular meals. We both work and have three kids so the shakes are just too easy for breakfast and lunch.
In the year and 4 months since we started Herbalife we started working out 5 to 6 days a week and haven’t stopped. This is key. I don’t care if you eat grapefruits and kale (obviously a ridiculous idea) all day long you need to get on a workout plan. Also plan on following this plan until they put you in the ground. That is the truth that you must understand. If you want to be in great shape and be fit then be prepared to eat right and work out for the rest of your life.
If you have more Herbalife questions I can help you there. Your fiend at the fitness club should know this stuff but maybe they are new. The products will work just don’t expect to stop taking them and go back to the way you ate before and keep the weight off.
It’s Bullsh*t to say that people gain the weight back really fast after Herbalife if you don’t explain what else they are doing. Did they go back to eating the crap they were eating before? Did they continue exercising? Find out those answers first. Don’t forget Herbalife is just food. It’s just food that has a major portion of all the vitamins and macronutrients that your body needs.
If you stop taking the shakes then you better be prepared to try and eat like you were still taking the shakes. By the way, the shakes are 150 calories each (we use water). Our day is 2 shakes (300 calories total), two snacks (100 calories each), and one regular meal (1000-2000 calories). I say 1000-2000 calories because now I am into building my muscle mass. I dropped from a 37 inch waist to a 33 inch waist and now I am building my arms, legs, back, and chest. I’ll be starting with Herbalife24 now which is designed for athletes. This is what Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi take. By the way, Herbalife does not sign endorsement deals with athletes unless they use the products.
That stuff on Amazon must come from Mexico or somewhere in South America. I don’t recommend you buy that stuff but it’s up to you. Do yourself a favor and buy from an official Herbalife distributor. That way you are guaranteed 100% authentic product.
Wibb, from what I understand Herbalife is popular in Mexico/south America and there are many distributors there. That likely explains why the product Vlad mentioned was in Spanish. As far as I know there are no counterfeit Herbalife products in Mexico etc., so I don’t think he has to worry about getting an authentic product. I believe Herbalife has good quality control of their products. While being a distributor offers some discounts, Vlad should weigh this against how deeply he wants to be involved with the company. Does he want to just use the product or be a distributor and/or recruit others to make an income for example?
I would toss in to the conversation that even though the FDA regulates supplements as food, herbalife is a supplement. It’s not food. With respect to weight loss, I do like that the uplines can offer support for those trying to lose weight or be fit. My only possible concern though is the quality of that support. Advice from uplines that have a nutrition background would be more valuable than that from those who just lost weight and may not have nutrition education outside of the herbalife world. I say that having reviewed other products where distributors say things that are just not true. Like everything, there is good and bad and Vlad should use his good judgement when taking advice.
Did you get my last question? it vanished from the site
Vlad, I just replied. Sorry for the delay, I was out all day.
I’m so glad I came across this blog. I started Herbalife at home because so many people have talked about. But I’m still confused about how to mix it. I was just doing 2 scoops of a flavor.
To Dustin, I have Formula 1 Cookies N Cream, Formula 1 Wild Berry and Protein drink Chocolate. But now I see that you have to mix 2 scoops and a shake? I’m confused please help.
Hi Gladys, Im happy you found my website too! I think I am partially to blame for the confusion you are experiencing. When I reviewed the Formula 1 research, I noticed that the researchers added extra protein to it. That said, I don’t think you have to add extra protein to it for it to work. Remember, weight loss occurs when we eat fewer calories than normal. You can track your calories by using a free app/website called MyFitnessPal.com If you want to add a little extra protein to it, that’s fine, but you can do this in many ways. You don’t need to add extra protein powder to Formula 1.
To get an idea of how much protein you might need, try this: multiply your body weight by 0.4.
If you exercise regularly, multiply your body weight by 0.6
For example, if you are 150 pounds, this would be 150 x 0.4 = 60 grams of protein per day. Since people who work out need a bit more protein (and those who are trying to lose weight might also need a wee bit more protein also), that’s why I said to multiple your body weight by 0.6. So if you are 150 lbs this would be 150 x0.6 = 90 grams of protein per day.
Odds are you may already be getting this amount so you would not have to worry about adding protein. But if you do, remember that a can of tuna fish has about 20 grams of protein.
When in doubt I think “keep it simple” is the way to go rather than worrying about how many scoops of protein powder to mix with the formula 1 shake.
Does this help?
Gladys,
First, where is your upline? Have you not asked this of them? Did they not explain this to you? I don’t understand how you are not asking them this. No wonder Herbalife gets a bad rep!!! Second, what is your goal? Before anyone can answer your question you need to be specific about what you are wanting to do using Herbalife.
Many people will assume that you are using it for weight loss but I am using it to maintain and build muscle mass. One of the difficult issues with people using the shakes is that with only two scoops of Formula One they tend to get hungry pretty quickly which reduces the effectiveness of the shakes. Why, people ask? Because if people get really hungry they will cheat. There is a specific program for people to lose weight and Gladys if your upline hasn’t explained this to you then they are not going to be a good coach I fear.
I am not going to go into the program here because that is part of what we offer to our clients. I’ll tell you right now though that at 150 calories per shake, which is what two scoops of formula one gives you, you are going to have a tough time sticking to the plan. As Joe explained you definitely don’t have to use the protein powder. Any type of protein will work and Joe has done the math for you. I would like to hear from you about how you got started and why you didn’t get this information when you started.
I’ve mention before I’m doing it at home I dont have a coach. Buying them online. Thanks
Gladys, I was mistaken yesterday. Two scoops of Formula 1 will only be 90 calories if you use water. We always recommend one scoop of protein and two of formula 1 in water. The shake is just so watery with only formula 1 and you will be hungry much faster. You can also make the shake with skim milk or almond milk (more calories of course) but we love them with water.
Good luck!
I have been taking Herbalife shakes for over a year now. In the first 3 to 4 months I lost 35 lbs. 2 shakes a day one meal of about 800-1000 calories and two snacks at about 100 to 150 calories each. My wife and I both have been doing them this long. We also exercise about 20 to 50 minutes 5-6 days a week.
The shakes work just like any similar type shake will work if you stick to a 1400-1800 calorie diet and get moderate exercise. If people are going to just take shakes and not exercise then it will be slower and harder because everyone cheats a little. Also, will you gain the weight back? Well, what are you going to eat after? For my wife and I there is no after. We’ve decided to continue and keep up with the shakes. They are just too convenient and you know exactly what you are consuming calorie and nutrient-wise.
By the way, I’m 46 and have much more muscle mass now than before. Is that herbalife? Not really that’s me and hard work. If you are looking for a fast and easy way to lose weight I’m afraid your going to be looking forever. At least until science fiction becomes a reality. You want to lose weight reduce your calorie intake and increase your calorie burn. Adding muscle will only accelerate the process. Again this all comes down to work. If it were easy everyone would be in shape and skinny.
By the way, the headaches the first several days are 100% normal. I was going crazy myself. I mean if you drastically change your diet from one day to the next is it any wonder your body freaked out a little bit.
Herbalife was our way of controlling our calorie intake and helped keep our protein up. And yes you don’t just take formula 1. We do two scoops of the flavored mix and one of the formula 1.
You want to know anything else about the Herbalife life just ask me. I’m kinda tired of people speaking half truths about it too.
To the woman in the UK who gained weight. You either have a condition that somehow increases your weight when you reduce your caloric intake or your caloric intake was too high. I mean it’s basically a numbers game – calories in versus calories burned. That’s it. All the rest is just bullsh*t and lack of discipline.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge! I started Herbalife mid December. I am 5’5″, started at a weight of 175 with a goal of losing 20lbs by my birthday which is the end of February. I’ve lost 10 so far so it looks like I’m on track to my goal. I use the Formula 1 shake and add the protein powder, take the multi-vitamin, cell activator, and their thermo tea. I also work out at least 4 days a week for an hour.
I really appreciated your review and was wondering if there are other shakes that you recommend. The total package is pricey and I keep thinking that there has got to be a way that I could make a shake on my own that would contain nutrients/protein/vitamins equivalent to a meal that I would replace with it.
Also, my recommended calorie intake is 1200 but when I use MyFitnessPal, it subtracts the calories I burn during exercise from the calories of my food intake. For example, today (I haven’t had dinner yet) I’ve consumed 964 food calories, exercised 1 hour to burn 600 so MyFitnessPall is calculating 1200 – 964 + 650 with 886 calories left for the day. There is no way I will eat 886 calories at dinner and so I usually just don’t subtract the calories burned during exercise, but then MyFitnessPal tells me I’m not eating enough….
Should the calories burned during exercise be subtracted from food calories consumed?? Just on a side note, one thing that astonished me with Herbalife is that my menopause symptoms disappeared! I’m 46 and suffered horrible menopause effects, but now no hot flashes, no insomnia, way more energy. I’m thinking that has something to do with the Soy because I’ve read that Soy is great for menopause. Thanks again for your article!!
Hi Joy,
I’ve looked at several weight loss shakes here. While I think some are better than others, all of them will help with weight loss. At the end of the day all meal replacement shakes do is get people to replace higher calorie foods for the lower calorie shake. So, all of them should have the same effect if the plan is followed.
That’s interesting about your menopause symptoms. You said you’ve lost 10 pounds so far. There is some evidence that weight loss can improve menopause symptoms. If that is true, then that might explain things. It might also mean that any shake would do the same thing (as long as it helped you lose weight).
1200 calories per day is not a lot of calories for most people. For you, I feel its too low. I wonder if they arrived at that level based on your original exercise habits (before you started working out)? since you said you burned about 600 calories in an hour (that’s a lot!), you will need more than 1200 calories per day. Why dont you redo your activity level in MyFitnessPal and see if they give you more calories per day. I honestly dont put much faith in most weight loss calculations because they are based on approximations. I’d rather you just cut back by about 300 calories what you normally eat. If you do that, it should also cause weight loss.
How’s that sound?
Thank you for your response. I checked MyFitnessPal and you are correct. The calorie recommendation is based on exercise habits before I began my get healthy plan which were none as I didn’t work out any. I edited activity level and now calorie recommendation is 1500. I also found a better calculator for calories burned that takes into consideration gender, age, weight and it looks like my calorie burn is closer to 450 rather than 600.
I will research your other reviews on shakes. I really like the shake option because I’m not disciplined about having breakfast. I was just thinking that instead of buying powders, there may be a way to use whole foods to make a shake with equivalent or similar nutrient profile. Thanks again Joe!
Joy, glad to help! 1500 calories per day still seems a little low for me. I’d bet you’d still lose weight if you ate 1600-1800 per day. Here is the shake I make myself if that helps you.
I liked your article but not clear whether it is good for diabetics to maintain sugar and lose weight: I am a Type 2 diabetics from last 7 years. Had HB1Ac of 9.9 and Fasting 180-190 and PP-240-260 about 9 months back but was able to reduce my weight by 7-8 Kgs with Diet, and walking 1 hour for 6 days.
9 months back My medicines were 850 mg 3 times Metformin + 50 mg twice Galvus (vildagliptin), Then 4 months back doctor added I mg Glimipride medicine in morning that made my fasting sugar come down to 130-140 and PP 170-210 and HB1Ac came down to 7.6. 4 days back I have started Formula 1 shake in the morning with milk, I eat lunch after 3.5 hours and light dinner (calorie intake 1200-1500), i also take Nutralite Daily one tab.
Should I also take protein powder along with shake? I have measured my sugar after 2 hours of drinking shake it was 131 and after 3 hours 99? My vitamin D and Vitamin B12 is also less. Please suggest
Rajiv, I don’t think the shake will hurt you and if it helps you lose weight, that should help your diabetes. Anything you can do to lose weight will help your diabetes. It sounds like you are making progress with the help of your medications and so that is good. With weight loss there is a chance that your medications can be reduces or even eliminated (talk to your doctor about this). The key is losing weight. Exercise -even walking – can help, but exercise plus reducing your calories a bit will work even better.
It sounds like you are doing pretty well by what you said. Have you tried tracking your calories with something like the free site MyFitnessPal? If not give it a shot. Here are a couple of other things Ive written about type II diabetes that may help you.

Yoga
Vanni, Yoga is good but it doesn’t burn as many calories as we might think. This is all the more reason to make sure you are keeping to the calories you need to eat to lose weight.
