HemoHim is an herbal immune supplement developed in Korea that preliminary research suggests may offer a variety of health benefits. A recent study highlights its efficacy in addressing ventilator-associated pneumonia, shedding light on dosage and implications for pneumonia patients. While popular, this supplement flies below the radar of most people. Nonetheless, let's delve into the details of this clinical research, exploring the dosage of HemoHim utilized, its possible side effects, and its significance for individuals grappling with pneumonia, colds, and flu.
What is HemoHim?
Hemohim, a natural health supplement pioneered in the early 2000s by the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), harnesses herbal ingredients that are popular in Chinese medicine (TCM) and traditional Korean medicine (TKM) and is marked to those who want immune system fortification, enhanced vitality, and increased energy levels.
Various studies (many involving laboratory animals) have demonstrated the supplement may be effective at bolstering immune cell activity, elevating white blood cell
counts, and overall immune function. Additionally, it has shown promise in alleviating fatigue and improving physical endurance during exercise. HemoHim was initially designed to help naturally strengthen the immune system of cancer patients following radiation and chemotherapy.
HemoHim Ingredients
Each packet of the supplement contains B vitamins and Vitamin C; however, the key ingredients lie in the 10 grams of an herbal proprietary blend containing these three ingredients, which are sourced from farms in Korea:
- Angelica Gigas root extract
- Cnidium Officinale root extract
- Paeonia Japonica root extract
What is Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia?
As indicated by its name, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) can affect a considerable percentage, ranging from 10% to 60%, of individuals undergoing mechanical ventilation during hospital stays. This condition commonly manifests within 48 hours of initiating ventilation support. Given its severity, VAP poses a significant threat to critically ill patients, often resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality rates.
To diminish the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia, healthcare professionals implement diverse preventive measures. These include incorporating probiotics, optimizing oral hygiene using chlorhexidine for ventilator-dependent patients, and ensuring adequate head elevation. Such precautions play a pivotal role in mitigating the risk of VAP development in hospital settings.
HemoHim Ventilator Pneumonia Study Summary
The experiment published in the Journal of Research in Pharmacy Practice and titled Efficacy of an Herbal Preparation (Atomy’s HemoHIM®) against Ventilator-associated Pneumonia: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial, sought to evaluate the efficacy of HemoHim in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia among mechanically ventilated patients.
This independent research was not sponsored by any company. No financial connections with Atomy, the manufacturer of the supplement, or conflicts of interest were disclosed. The study received support from Isfahan University in Iran.
Here's a synopsis of the participants and how the study was conducted:
- 30 men and women, ages 62 to 71, who did not have pneumonia and were on a ventilator in the hospital for more than 48 hours.
- 15 of the people received conventional treatment.
- 15 people received one packet of Hemohim daily for 7 days.
- The supplement was given orally or through a nasogastric tube.
- The patients were monitored for 14 days to determine how many cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia occurred.
HemoHim Pneumonia Study Results
Here is a summary of the results that were reported:
- Hemohim takers developed fewer cases of ventilator pneumonia than standard care receivers (8 cases vs. 17 cases).
- People receiving Hemohim spent two fewer days on hospital ventilators than those treated with conventional care (the median length was 12 days vs. 14 days).
- Hemohim did not significantly reduce the duration of VAP or the time people spent in the intensive care unit.
- Fewer people receiving the supplement died compared to those treated conventionally (10.5% vs. 21.7%).
- Hemohim increased secretion of interferon-gamma and Interleukin-2.
- Treatment with HemoHim did not shorten the time people were on ventilators.
- Hemohim did not change or reduce the microorganisms present in the lungs of people with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Statistically, Hemohim appeared to be associated with fewer ventilator-associated pneumonia cases than people receiving conventional treatment. More specifically, the supplement was associated with 36.4 cases of VAP per 1000 days, compared to 57.4 new cases per 1000 days in those who were given standard care protocols.
Study Problems
A segment of the study indicated that each group consisted of 15 patients, totaling 30 individuals. However, upon examining the Results section, it became evident that 42 patients were included. Consequently, the statistical analysis was conducted based on data from 42 participants.
