Collagen is very popular in the world of dietary supplements but if you are looking for a collagen supplement for yourself you need to know how to the difference between the different types. Different types of this protein have been studied for different things (wrinkles vs arthritis for example). In this quick video, I'm going to show you how to tell the difference between type I, type II, and Type III collagen. So what's the best type of collagen? It really depends. Once you know the right type, you can more easily find a supplement for skin health vs. arthritis.

So, Does Collagen Work?
Preliminary research suggests this unique protein may aid arthritis and even help reduce wrinkles. Some of this research involves humans. That said, there's much that's not understood. Many studies are conducted /supported by supplement companies. While there are 29 different types of collagen, it seems that different types (mostly type I, type II, and type II) have different effects. Type II may help arthritis while types I and III may help the skin.

What can I give my dog for arthritis in her hips?
Joe Cannon says
Hi Patty, so I dont specialize in supplements for dogs, some have said they had good responses with glucosamine and chondroitin. I’m sure your vet could give you more insights on this. Let me know what you decide and how it works for your beloved dog.

I would be interested in the effect collagen supplements would have on dupytrens contracture which is a collagen disease? you have to be careful. When you take supplements like these the body starts balancing out , and slows its own collagen out put. So when you stop ….
Joe Cannon says
Richard, that’s an interesting point. the body does like to maintain balance. I have not seen any research on collagen supplements slowing natural collagen production. Next time I run into a dermatologist I will bring this up. As for Dupuytren’s contracture, I did a quick search and didn’t see anything on collagen supplements. Until more is known, this is definitely something considering for those with this condition.
Richard Fowler says
Actually Joe
I can tell you one of the best supplements to keep Dupuytren’s contracture at bay, keeping it soft, (it will not cure it ) is serrapeptase which you no doubt are aware of. I am interested in supplements and or natural products ….that do more than one thing or have more than one use.
It is interesting to note Chinese medicine never contains just one component, whereas modern medicine reduces it to just one medicine. So for example would be Statins against a natural product like Rice Bran Oil. It is only in the last few years that supplement companies are promoting vitamins working synergistically with others
Joe Cannon says
Richard, yes I have heard of serrapeptase. So far I have not reviewed it though (I’ll add it to the list). I know its an enzyme. I agree, companies tend to reduce things to single-action products. Like you, I’m a fan of supplements that research shows can do multiple things.

Joe,
I use Great Lakes unflavored Collagen hydrolysate and Reserveage Collagen Replenish Powder
with Hyaluronic acid and Verisol. I looked into their sources of their collagen and testing, which is one of the reasons I felt comfortable purchasing them.
The Great Lakes is undetectable in foods and liquids and the Reserveage contains stevia. I’ve used some of the Ancient Nutrition products, but they are pricey.
Looking forward to your other review.
Joe Cannon says
Judy, thanks for the tip on the great lakes and Reservage brands. The next video will be out soon 🙂
Judy Leahy says
Thanks Joe. Will check out your new review.
I used my gmail this time and still received no notification of follow up comments, even though I checked the options to notified.

Hey Joe
Loved this on Collagen. I’ve been putting collagen peptides in my coffee every morning for several years. 20grams a day. I love that this is good for my skin but I’m really looking for joint pain relief. Do you know a good brand to source this collagen 2 type from chicken because mine is bovine. I love that word bovine so people think they are having something more fancy than a cow.
On another note yesterday’s zoom meeting was not very informative. I’m sure Dylan had great intentions but I think you and Anne could have done a better job. He should have done two different programs for us. One last week for beginners and another one more advanced to help us with room set up. I finally ordered a mixer in hopes I can blend my music and Mike better. Those of us doing movement with music need better direction. Ok I’ll stop whining now.
PS you have such a great radio voice!!!!! Very soothing and enthusiastic at the same time!
Joe Cannon says
Kris, yes I smile at the word bovine too 🙂 Thanks so much about my voice. I’m told I have a voice for radio 🙂
about the chicken collagen here is a brand of chicken collagen I found
Yes, we all had different backgrounds with zoom. If you have any questions about zoom, etc., just let me know and I’ll be glad to help 🙂
