Update 3/12/20. Juice Plus is one of the most popular whole food supplements out there. It's been around many years. In the past, I have taken it and am familiar with it. I am not a Juice Plus distributor or associated with the company. In this review, I'll attempt to answer your questions. I'll also take a look at what's out there on Juice Plus side effects. If you have a question, post it below and I'll try to help you.
Does Juice Plus Have Side Effects?
For the vast majorly of people, Juice Plus is very safe. It's just-food. I've taken Juice Plus for over a year and did not notice any side effects. Most people also report no side effects either. That said, when you have a supplement that millions and millions of people take, from time to time, some may report side effects. Below is a list of those which have been reported in medical journals
In one report, a 51-year-old woman with endometrial cancer developed liver problems after starting Juice Plus. The liver problems got better 4 weeks after stopping the supplements. Did JP cause this? This is difficult to say since this was just a report of one person who had these symptoms. Also, the person did have cancer, and this may have played a role.
Here's a short list of things to think about when taking this supplement:
- start with less than recommended for the first week to see how you respond,
- taking it with food may help absorption and reduce any GI effects you may experience,
- if you take blood thinner medicine, talk to your doctor first. Juice Plus has vitamin K. Vitamin K plays a role in blood clotting. In theory, it may reduce how well blood thinners work.
- If you take any medications, talk to your doctor. There's a lack of research in drug interactions.
- Stop taking the supplement at least 2 weeks before surgery.
Does Juice Plus Sponsor Research?
Most of the research on the supplement is supported or sponsored by National Safety Associates (NSA), the company that makes this product. This is a legitimate company that's been around since 1993. It’s because of this that some people wonder if Juice Plus is a scam. Detractors say “they sponsor their own research.” To that, I say, “if they don't do it, who will?”
I appreciate it when a company puts in the time and effort to test its supplements. I can tell you most supplement companies do not do this.
The company has said they do not influence the outcomes of Juice Plus research. Some of the people who have done Juice Plus research have had ties to NSA. People might argue this opens up the possibility of bias on the part of the researchers. That said, I am not sure how strong this argument is because some of the studies seem to contradict each other. If there was a big conspiracy to hide the truth, then the research would be in more agreement.
Bottom line: I don't think the supplement is a scam. I'm OK with company-sponsored research as long as its quality. What I see in this case is quality research for the most part.
Is It FDA Approved?
No, it's not, and here's why. The food and drug association (FDA) does not approve dietary supplements. No supplement is FDA-approved. There is FDA regulation, however. FDA Approval and regulation are different. The regulation of dietary supplements is called DSHEA. You can learn more about DSHEA on my FAQ page.
Does Juice Plus Cure Disease
No study has ever shown the supplement has cured any disease. The company that makes JP does seem to be directing its research toward showing how it can reduce the risk of disease. As Ben Franklin once said, An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
Juice Plus vs. Vineyard Blend
The flagship JP supplement contains extracts of many different fruits and vegetables, while the Vineyard Blend has extracts from different berries and grapes.
Grapes and berries are healthy and contain healthy phytonutrients like resveratrol. That said, the majority of research is on the original Juice Plus – the stuff that's been around since 1993. Personally, I'd like to see more research on the Vineyard Blend.
I'd love to see a study comparing regular JP to the Vineyard Blend to see what their differences are.
The Juice Plus Enzymes
There do appear to be enzymes added to the supplement. I don't think the enzymes add anything to the benefits of the supplement. Enzymes are proteins. Just like other proteins, the enzymes would be destroyed in the stomach. For those with digestion problems, they may help. But for most people, I'm skeptical.
What About Weight Loss?
This is not a weight loss supplement. The supplement is not promoted to help people lose weight. I've taken this supplement for up to a year and did not notice any reduction in body weight. If the supplement gets you to start eating more fruits and vegetables, then I can see how it might help. But, that's because you'd be reducing calories more than anything else.
Is It The Same As Fruits And Vegetables?
They often call Juice Plus “the next best thing to fruits and vegetables,” but this is basically a marketing slogan. It's meant to drive home the message the supplement comes from real foods. To their credit, even the company website says it's not a substitute for eating real fruits and vegetables.
One difference is the JP supplement has practically no fiber. Fiber is very important for health. Also, research notes people who eat more fruits and vegetables get fewer diseases. If taking the supplement gets you to think about eating more fruits and vegetables, then that is a very good thing.
Since its inception, there have been many green foods and other supplements out there. Are they better or different? Here's a quick rundown of some of the popular competitors.
Does It Make You Poop?
The research does not show a change in bathroom frequency, but it's possible in some people this may occur. While the supplement has very little fiber, in theory, JP may alter gut health. By altering the microbiome, more frequent trips to the bathroom may occur. This is speculation, though. If the supplement changed your bathroom trips, leave a comment below.
Does It Have Iron?
No. There is no iron added to the supplement. If its present, it's in very low amounts and due to naturally occurring mineral in the foods that make up the supplement.
Does It Contain Magnesium?
The magnesium present in the supplement comes from what is naturally found in foods. Generally, foods that contain fiber and/or are green will contain magnesium. The amount of magnesium will vary between bottles due to the supplement being a powder. Some bottles may have more or less magnesium than others.
Does It Contain Soy?
There is no soy in the flagship JP capsules or Orchard Blend. The protein powder, however (Juice Plus Complete) does contain soy. Each scoop of Complete has 13 grams of protein.
Does It Have Folic Acid?
Yes, it does. Folate – the natural form of the vitamin -is found in the supplement. The amount of folate will vary from bottle to bottle because the supplement is in powder. Juice Plus does not contain any synthetic folic acid. Folate is the natural form of this vitamin. Folic acid is the synthetic form.
Juice Plus vs. MonaVie
MonaVie is another popular food extract supplement. In my view, the biggest difference between Juice Plus and MonaVie is the research. Juice Plus has several human studies. There is less research on MonaVie. More than that, however, there seem to be no clinical studies comparing them to each other. For more insights, see:
Juice Plus vs. Juice Festive
Juice festive is another popular whole food supplement, often found at Cosco, Sames Club, etc. I'm not aware of any head-to-head comparisons between these two supplements.
See the review of Juice Festive for more information about that product.
Juice Plus vs. Texas SuperFood
Texas superfood is another whole food supplement people often ask about. Like Juice Festive, I'm not aware of any studies comparing these products to each other.
See the review of Texas SuperFood for more about that supplement.
Does Juice Plus Work?
To be honest, I like Juice Plus. It's just the extracts of several fruits and vegetables in powdered form. It doesn't have anything crazy in it, and there are various clinical studies showing it may have benefits. For me, it's the research that's most important. While it's not a substitute for eating a salad, my hope is if you take it, you'd eventually wonder what else you can do to improve your health. If this gets you to eat that salad, then it's a step in the right direction.

I have been taking Juice Plus for seven out of the last 10 years. In the seven years I have taken it I get some form of cold or other bug once every 18 months for the three years I was off of it I was sick about six times that’s enough research for me to prove it works.
Joe Cannon says
Hi Rob, I’ve heard others say JP helps protect them from getting sick too. I’m glad it’s working well for you.
DAySi says
I like to know is my product is good to eat if the expiration date was in December year 2017
Joe Cannon says
DAySi, how long Juice plus is good for after the expiration date will vary by how well it was stored -away from heat and moisture for example. That said 2017 was quite a long time ago. I can say. Are there any JP sellers here who can shed light on this question?
Becky says
I’ve taken JP since the mid-90s. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my health, because I don’t eat like I should, consistently. It’s also the best thing I’ve done for my family’s health. My mother continually said that JP & JP Complete had kept my dad alive for 5 years more, due to the whole food nutrition, as other than JP, he lived on a banana sandwich for lunch, & Burger King hamburger & fries for dinner.
My niece, who had always been on the constipated-side, even as a toddler, called me after she’d been on JP for a month or two. She said I’m going to the bathroom regularly!!! When I checked with a doctor in my up-line (I’m a distributor, but don’t get out & market it), he said that it was the enzymes from the whole foods, regulating her system.
Like you, the research has always been important to me. And the fact that they use only organically grown produce. And a low-heat dehydration process which doesn’t kill the nutrients & enzymes.
And most important of all? My mother’s 4 sisters all died from breast cancer, & my first cousin had breast cancer at age 40. Mother’s mother had uterine & cervical cancer. Other than God, of course, I give Juice Plus ALL the credit for keeping my mother & me free of breast cancer!
God gave us everything we need to be healthy on this earth, but in America, our foods are so adulterated. It is hard to find TRUE fruits, veges & grains, that haven’t been genetically altered, sprayed with glyphosate (Round-Up), or otherwise tamped with so that our bodies don’t even know what to do with them — unless you grow your own, that is. Juice Plus gives me the assurance of ingesting QUALITY foods, & getting the great nutrition from them.
Thank you for your review!
Joe Cannon says
Becky, Thanks for sharing and I’m SO GLAD juice plus has helped you and your family so well. It’s definitely a quality supplement and I’m glad to learn taking it regularly has benefited you and your mom and dad and niece so well. I’m also very happy to learn you and your mom are breast cancer-free!
Jill Barrett says
When using Juice+ I do find that I have to go to the bathroom a lot more frequently. After stopping for a couple of weeks I go back to normal.
Joe Cannon says
Hi Jill, that’s interesting. I wonder if that may be due to Juice Plus improving your microbiome health? I don’t think I’ve seen anything on how Juice Plus helps the microbiome but it just occurred to me. Are there any juice plus ambassadors here who can add anything?
Siobhan Farrell says
Hi when you stop taking juice plus fruit and veg can it put on weight ?
Joe Cannon says
Hi Siobhan, I’ve never heard of people gaining weight after they stop taking juice plus. Has that happened to you?
Emily says
I have a bottle of juice plus that is expired. I’m assuming I should throw them away. Yes? Or would it be ok?
Joe Cannon says
Hi Emily, did you buy it from a JP distributor? if yes they may be able to help you figure that out. how long has it been since it expired? if its a few months, my hunch is it should be ok.
Becky says
Actually, the company once told me it’s good 2 years past expiration. 🙂
Joe Cannon says
Becky thanks for letting me know this! I appreciate it. I will remember that for when others ask about juice plus expiration dates.
Joan says
I’ve been taking Juice Plus for 10 years. I hardly ever get sick. Before Juice Plus, I got sick every winter.
Joe says
Hi Joan, thanks for the feed back. Im so glad to learn Juice Plus has been working well for you 🙂
Katherine Hickey says
I agree completely!!!
I started taking Juice Plus about 2 years ago and stopped. Just recently I would say the last 6 months I have been taking it every day. The shakes in the morning and my servings of vitamins, both my daughter and husband got Phenomena and the flu and other issues and I NEVER got sick not once and i am very susceptible to phenomena considering I have had it twice….
I remember my Juice Plus journey 2 years ago and I remember distinctly not ever getting sick so now I have my daughter taking the chewables and drinking a shake because I know it works.
SO far SO good for my little one – no sicknesses from school. unfortunately for my husband though lol he keeps forgetting/ not caring to make it a daily routine and he is still getting sick.
Joe says
Katherine, thanks for sharing your story. Glad your daughter is doing well. Keep working on your husband 🙂

FYI: The Juice Plus Complete and chocolate fig bar is labeled with a cancer causing warning under California law. Proposition 65 (which is warning for California consumer and not consumers in any other state or country) provides more testing on products then any other research in the USA. Under their reports these products haven’t passed their safety regulations and contain cancer causing agents. The webpage for Juice Plus has this warning on their page as well. Even though its reported and regulated in California doesn’t mean it can’t harm someone in Texas!
Nicolle says
FYI: “ALL JP+ products meet ALL safety guidelines for the FDA, USDA, TGA, Health Canada, NSF, USP, WHO & EU – the strictest quality organizations.”
“California proposition 65 is a law known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. … It is significantly out-of-step with health regulations everywhere else in the US and around the world. It is NOT a reflection on the safety and efficacy of products. They test for more than 900 different substances.
“Almost all foods contain some level of one or more of the over 900 substances impacted by Prop 65. In most cases, the exposure levels established by Prop 65 are less than what occurs NATURALLY in fruits, vegetables, grains, and even drinking water. Natural foods such as yams, apples, tomatoes, artichokes, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, and corn provide exposures in excess….
“Prop 65 limits for lead are so low, almost ALL foods contain amounts higher than allowed by this California law. To put this in perspective: 3-5 servings of vegetables daily could contain up to ten times more lead than the maximum allowed by California prop 65….
” Yet, food producers are not required to provide Prop 65 notices. …
“How does this affect Juice Plus+ Naturals Products? IT DOES NOT AFFECT JP+ CAPSULES, GUMMIES OR CHERRY BARS. Any amount of lead listed by the State of California found in Juice Plus+ Complete or Chocolate Fig Bar occur as a result of the natural state of the ingredients in the products. Prop 65 states that no warning is required when the listed substance occurs naturally in a food product, and not as the result of “known human activity”. We believe all our products should be exempted under this “naturally occurring allowance” exception. However, until this exception is more clearly delineated by the Courts and the State of California, we will comply with the notice requirements. ..
“BOTTOM LINE: You can’t go into a Starbucks, grocery store or restaurant in California without seeing a Prop 65 warning sign. To avoid any lead you will have to stop eating produce, which would obviously not be good for your health. Plants contain lead along with other metals and trace minerals, taken up by plants from the soil. Therefore, if you eat plants, or products made with plants, you will consume miniscule (micrograms) amounts of lead and other minerals. A person eating just 3-5 servings of vegetables daily would consume up to ten times more lead than the unrealistic, stringent maximum recommended by California.
“Rest assured ALL JP+ Products – including Complete and the Bars – are safe and effective, based on both consumer usage and acceptance and our rigorous testing every step of the way…
” ALL Juice Plus+ products fall within FDA, USDA, USP, NSF (and guidelines for every other state in the union and country in the world) suggested guidelines for any/all of the chemicals listed by Prop 65 and can be safely consumed.
P.S. Joe, sorry for the length. I tried to shorten it.
Joe says
Hi Nicolle, no worries. I’m pretty wordy myself 🙂

I started taking JP capsules in April of 2016. By September 2016 I was having surgery to remove uterine polyps. I started having The irregular bleeding in April, the same month I started JP. I thought nothing of taking the JP capsules and didn’t put two and two together until December.
Even after my surgery I continued to have irregular bleeding and extremely heavy periods. I didn’t take any capsules the month of December and my cycle returned to normal. In January I started back on my JP capsules and again started having irregular cycles again. I am convinced the JP capsules are causing my irregular bleeding.
After doing some research on the internet It looks like I am not the only one having problems. Both of my children are the JP chews and I am very concerned for their well being. I am taking them off of the JP chews and will not endorse these vitamins to anyone.
My body is very sensitive to vitamins and medications, so for me, JP is not a good option. I don’t believe JP caused my uterine polyps. However, I do believe it is what caused my irregular bleeding, which led me to find my uterine polyp.
In some ways I am thankful because JP helped me find something that could have been cancerous. I am not happy with JP products and in a few years I believe we will hear more stories like mine. If they work for you, great! However, if you notice your body reacting differently stop them immediately.

Hello I have been taking juice plus for six months, I don’t think it is any good, well not for me I only take it because people said it was good. I suffer from lupus I have to take steroids and my immune system is very low. does anyone no what I can use to lose weight and be healthy? many thanks
Joe says
Hi Ann, are you having any side effects from juice plus?
Walking can help your immune system as can most any other type of exercise. Eating more fruits and vegetables can also help your immune system stay strong and can also help you lose weight. If you dont like to eat those, you can make a smoothie out of them and drink them. Here’s a smoothie recipe I like to make.
There is some research that turmeric (the spice) might help lupus symptoms: Here is a video that discusses it:
http://nutritionfacts.org/video/fighting-lupus-with-turmeric-good-as-gold/
Here is a list of things that might help weight loss. Notice how many of the things contain fiber.

Any other questions, just ask. I hope you have a wonderful christmas!
Jamie says
I’d like to second this. The first paragraph was on my mind especially. Diet and exercise are your main weapons. It’s not easy at first, but change takes time. Keep working at it.
Nicolle says
Hi Ann,
I’ve had Lupus since the age of 13 ( I’m 51 now). So I know a “little” about taking steroids and immunosuppressives. I had a kidney transplant 5 years ago, and am now taking anti-rejection medication. I just wanted to give you a little about my background first before I say what I’m going to say 🙂
First, Juice Plus is NOT a miracle pill. It is NOT a cure for any disease, and we both know that there is no cure for Lupus. But what we do know, is that Lupus is all about inflammation. So, we need to make diet and lifestyle (like exercising) changes that will help reduce that. Steroids will cause salt and water retention, so you know you have to reduce your salt intake. Don’t shy away from water, you need that to flush your body. Steroids also increase your craving for sugars, which all of this will cause weight gain. (I know, I’ve been there). Refined sugars also cause inflammation. Instead of refined sugars, go for an apple, or some red grapes (nature’s candy), or some other fruit for that sweet tooth.
I agree with Joe about the Turmeric, also Omega 3’s, they both are valuable in reducing inflammation. You see, it’s all about putting more anti-inflammatory foods in your diet. Not only with fruits, but Adding more vegetables to your diet – go for the colors of the rainbow – everyday. Sometimes its easy to do, sometimes its not so easy, but as you do it, you will find yourself slowly feeling better. I remember telling my husband some years back, If someone would just put vegetables in a capsule, I would take it, and guess what, someone did…..
ALL Juice Plus IS, is powdered fruits and vegetables and some grains in capsule form, and THAT’s IT – nothing strange added (and I’m assuming you are taking the capsule). They just found a way to make juicing easier. They’ve done the juicing for you, but retained the fiber that usually gets wasted, made it into a powered form and put it in capsules.
It’s not a replacement for fruits and vegetables but it helps to bridge the gap on those days that you don’t eat what you should (7-13 servings), BUT, the thing is, you have to be consistent and take it EVERYDAY, and for people like us who are taking medications to that lowers our immune system, we may not feel the changes right away, but know that it is working in your body, it just needs more time.
It took time for a disease to manifest itself in our body, its going to take time for doing the right things for our body to start healing. I had been taking JP for a year and the things that I was hoping for didn’t happen like other people, but then a Nutritionist told me to double my dose, and it was after that was when I started noticing little changes. (like my having a negative ANA) (I’ve now been on it for 2 years). It’s the same for others who have lupus as well, they just started doubling up and noticed changes. Talk with your rep, and she can provide more information, and possibly connect you with other “Lupies” and medical professionals.
Simple changes – Exercise, drink more water, get at least 7-8 hours of sleep or more (learn how to listen to your body), Get more Fruits and Vegetables in your diet. Juice plus is just a way to help jump start that.
If you are tired of having to take so many pills, just add open up the JP capsules and add them to your smoothies. Sprinkle turmeric over your salads.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Oh, and here’s a book you may be interested in reading, it’s called:
The Inflammation Solution: When Everything Works and Nothing Hurts Paperback – August 25, 2015 by William Sears MD (Author), Vincent Fortanasce MD (Foreword)
It’s an easy read, and everything is in layman’s terms
Debbie says
Nicolle, Thank you for sharing! I am curious how long have you had your transplant? I have had a kidney/pancreas transplant in 1992 and have been on JP almost two years.

Great info, Nicoll! My sister-in-law, 23 years ago, had a Multiple Sclerosis “episode” in which she went blind in both eyes for a day or so, then was left blind in one eye. She started on Juice Plus, & for 8 years had no more episodes. She stopped JP for few months, & again ended up in the hospital with a second MS episode!!
She went back on JP, taking 3 caps a day instead of 2, & has never had an episode since. She is a BELIEVER! And so am I. She mostly takes 2 caps, now, as she makes sure to eat a balanced diet each day.
As you pointed out, our health is all about inflammation. Sugar is the worst culprit, & is my biggest challenge. Being born in the south, in 1955, sugar was a huge part of my diet, as were fried foods. I don’t do fried foods much, these days, but I still have an issue with sugar.
When I first started on JP, 25 years ago, I actually lost my urge for sugar. I was naturally eating healthier. It was fantastic! I dropped 25 pounds, due to not eating the junk, & as I lost weight & kept getting the great nutrition of JP & my healthier diet, I gained energy, which helped me lose even more weight. At that time, I was living in Utah, and with such a great climate, low-humidity heat & cold, it was easy to be active.
15 years ago, I moved back to NW Georgia. When the humid heat begins, I’m inside. And I’m not out in the humid cold, either, as it’s so icy feeling. Too, I got back to snacking on sugary snacks. I moved for the right reason, to be here for my elderly parents as they aged, but my heart was still in the west. Just wasn’t living my best life, here. Gained weight back. (Though I retired last week, so I expect to eat less sugar. I snacked when I was bored at work, eating Riesen’s & other candy throughout each day.)
So, I’m now in the process of trying to wean my body off sugar, & eating healthier. I buy Einkorn Wheat (the only non-hybridized ancient wheat) from Jovial Foods, & make my own Einkorn bread (SO simple, no kneading, even, start to finish in under 1.5 hours!). I slice & freeze it, then pull out a slice when I’m hungry but not yet time for a meal.
I drink JP Complete every morning for breakfast. I mix the powder up 7 days at a time, in those little 8 oz Ball Plastic Freezer Jars. I put my scoop of Complete, then a tablespoon of CVS Original Coarse Fiber Supplement, then a scoop of Dr. Axe’s Vanilla Multi-Collagen Complex, then a heaping tsp each of turmeric powder & Ceylon cinnamon, then a 1/4 tsp of black pepper. THEN…I empty out 3 each of the JP capsules — fruits, veggies & grapes/berries. Haven’t yet started the Omega 3 formula, due to cost. Then I blend all this with a whisk & stack the “jars” in my cabinet.
Each morning, I dump one of the jars into my vanilla almond milk & that’s my breakfast. And if I’m not in the mood for anything for dinner, I mix a scoop of Complete in almond milk & drink that.
It’s true that there’s not a lot of fiber in JP, otherwise, all those fruits, veggies & grains wouldn’t fit into capsules! As a doctor once told me, the human body, when cremated, can fit in a small urn. This is due to the body being 60% or so of water. Fruits & veges, on the other hand, are up to 95% water!!
I will stand by JP till the day I die. I KNOW that I would be FAR less healthy without it!
Joe Cannon says
Becky you might be interested in reading a book Im reading now called The Fat Switch. It’s written by a doctor who researches sugar and fructose. He makes an interesting case linking fructose to elevations in uric acid levels which turns on the switch which causes us to gain weight – and develop several other diseases. I’ve thought about reaching out to him and inviting him on my podcast.

Great article. Thanks. You’ve got me thinking though.
As background: I’ve been taking Solgar Earth Source Multi-Nutrient tablets with Fish Oil tablets daily.
I’m wondering if instead of Solgar multi Nutrients, if something like Juice Plus / juice Festive is better for me with the fish oil?
Either that, or, with my current fish oil/solgar mix, is it even better to also top up with juice plus / juice festive?
Honestly, way too confusing reading what’s in them all so I wanted to ask as it looks like although some cross over in ingredients they’re not the same.
Joe says
Hi Paul, Im not familiar with whats all in the Solgar brand. If it has fruit/vegetable extracts, then maybe there might be a cross over effect (I’m not sure though). Juice Plus does not contain fish oil so if you are seeing benefits from that, Id continue taking that supplement.

I have no patience for Juice Plus..
I know a family who sell and recruit people to sell it.
Representatives at the top o promote a cure all that will transform everyone’s life and even solve world hunger (tower gardens.)
They believe they will be rich and have quit their jobs.
Anecdotal evidence is used as proof .
The answer I get when it comes to addressing the criticism against the product is answered by “look at us,” or “what is more important your health or your money,” Critical thinking is more important.
If Juice Plus does all the things it claims to do, why isn’t the Mayo Clinic on top of it.
I am leery of clinical trials made by the company alone. Put it out there for everyone to test and make more money.
People are gullible and placebo effects are a scientific fact.

Hey there! I’m not sure if you know this but there are a lot of University’s and colleges, like Georgetown, Toyko’s Women’s Medical Univ., Vanderbilt, and Univ. of Texas Health Science Center, even a study funded by the National Cancer Institute! All concluded benefits to taking JP+! I’m sorry if you had a bad experience from your neighbors, but it doesn’t seem like you gave it a shot yourself. But regardless, there is definitely science to back it up.
Cheers!

Hi Skye, are there any newer studies I missed in my review of Juice Plus Research
A.P. says
Hi Joe,
There is actually over 30 studies now.
Joe says
A.P. Thanks A.P. I will have to take a look at them. Do any Juice Plus people have all the studies they can show me so I can see which ones need to be added to my review?

Hi folks, I’m a former user and distributor of Juice Plus+ and became seriously ill. Now I’ve liver-cancer. My doctors at the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS departement MD-ANDERSON-CANCER-CENTER in Houston, Texas, told me, that I had immediately to stop taking these products. And they told me why. In the following link to the American Journal of Medicine (AMJMED) you find a study, where these doctors describe, that you may get liver-cancer from this powder:
http://www.AMJMED.com/article/S0002-9343(09)00712-8/abstract
So it seems, that these powders were not good for me and I regret that I’ve eaten them and recommended them in all my ignorance.
Meanwhile I searched through the internet, what I didn’t do during the times before. And folks, what I read on the websites of JUICE PLUS-REVIEWS, FOODUCATE and especially in JUICEPLUS-DOCTORS-CRITICS changed my opinion and gave me information, that I didn’t have until that day.
So, now I know, why my doctors in the University of Texas, one of world’s best cancer institutes, warned me. Thank you!!

Cris, did you see my full review on juice plus research? Its a deep dive into what the research shows.
Heres the full Juice Plus Review Let me know if you have any questionions or thoughts
Joy, how are you doing? I re-read what you said about having liver cancer. Are you doing well?
Becky says
I am so sorry that you’re dealing with this cancer. I pray you’ll get through it & regain your health!
As for the JAMA article, I would be more suspicious of the IBUPROFEN that was a regular part of the patient’s regimen. That is TERRIBLE for the liver!
I took it for a year or so, for back pain. My brother warned me against it, but I kept on. The next year, my annual blood profile showed my liver numbers WAY out of whack! Also, I had gotten to the point of being almost “rigid” in my joints — I was stiffening. Couldn’t even stand up straight, after sitting for a minute.
I stopped the Ibu cold-turkey. Gradually, I regained my flexibility, & the next year my liver numbers were back in the normal range. Scary!
I cannot see how simple fruits & veges, organically grown & picked at the peak of ripeness (allowing all the nutrients to build up), with nothing else added, could do anything but HELP the body be healthier. Good nutrition can help anything at least be better, & that’s ALL Juice Plus is.
Gotta wonder if Big Pharma is factoring in, here. It’s all about the profits, unfortunately, just as what’s going on with Covid-19.
Kristen says
Hi Everyone! I m wondering if anyone has any knowledge on Melaleuca’s supplements Vs Juice Plus? Or since they ship you a 4 month supply, if the chewables loose any of their nutrients in the time it takes to get through the 4 month supply? TIA
Joe says
Hi Kristen, as far as I know Juice Plus has not been compared to Melaleuca in a head to head comparison. As far as the expiration date, I believe most things are good for a period of time after the expiration date expires.
Becky says
The chewables definitely do not lose nutrients in 4 months! The expiration date is usually at least a year ahead, sometimes more, & they’re just as potent far beyond that.
Sandra Mickelson says
I know I should consult my doctor before using anything like this, but it is HIGHLY unlikely that she will know anything about it, so what is the use?
I have Crohn’s disease and have only 1/2 of my colon left and also have had 25″ of small bowel removed and am unable to eat/digest many important vegetables. I take a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement as well as a B-Complex and B-12 along with various other supplements already.
Do you know of any reason not to give this a try? I am concerned about 2 things that I have read about “side effects”. #1 is diarrhea for the first month or 6 weeks.
#2 is the increase in TNF, also just for a time.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Joe says
Hi Sandra, I dont know if anyone really looked at TNF levels over time. The study you are reffing to was done in 2006 and I dont think it was ever replicated. As such I am not sure if it it increases TNF or not. Ive only seen this in 1 study and not any of the others. Since JP is basically ground up foods, I honestly am skeptical that it does it.
Why don’t you show the ingredients to your pharmacist and see what they think. Do you see a dietitian? if yes, I’m confident they know about JP and can offer guidance. While I have not heard anything negative about Crohns and juice plus, if you try it start with the least amount possible for the first week. That should cut down on any side effects you might experience. If you try it, let me know what happens.
Anyone else have guidance for Sandra?
Neveen Khouzam says
Hi Sandra, the capsules contain the live enzymes which eats away at the parasites that are in your intestines, hence the gas/bloating and or diarrhea. The chewables do not contain the live enzymes and don’t give you that same reaction from the start.
I would recommend if you were to try Juice Plus, to start with the chewables as an introduction to your body, then in the future, you can switch to the capsules.
I hope this answers your concern!
Joe says
Hi Neveen, how long do the enzymes in juice plus stay alive? Are there any studies that show the enzymes in Juice Plus reduce parasites in the intestines? if yes, can you show me the study or let me know which parasites they break down. Thanks.
Becky says
Sandra, I would recommend starting with one capsule per day for a few weeks, then progressing to two. My late uncle had Ulcerative Colitis, & this worked for him, & even helped his condition immensely!
Zizi says
Hi Sandra,
I use juice plus and I honestly think that you should give it a try! I personally don’t know anyone with the same problem as yours, but I know people who have gotten better since using it, myself included!
Evi Paris says
Hi sandra, My mom in law suffered with crons for 3 years and she nearly withered away to nothing. Summer of 2016 I introduced her to jp and jp complete and she swears by it. Even her doctor has confirmed her incredible turn around. She has gained weight and not having as many flare ups. She’s able to keep food down. She started with the capsules and shakes. The capsules we did an introductory schedule of one capsule a day, keeping the same flavour for at least a week. She gradually began to mix and gradually started taking multiple a day.
The shake though is what she loves he most. She has one every day. Again we tasted with a smaller dose and worked our way up. She’s got more life and light in her from what I see. The results were almost immediate. Within a month she started calling me and telling me how many people are noticing her change. Best of luck to you. Love and health.

sue says
It’s just whole food, it’s a nutrition label, NOT a supplement label. MD Anderson has clinical trials that include JP
Joe says
Sue, juice plus is a dietary supplement. I’m sure most JP distributors, like yourself, would agree that its meant to supplement the foods you eat and hopefully make up for what you might not be eating. Since juice plus contains extracts of a variety of foods -whole foods or not – I dont know if we can call JP “whole food.”
Zizi says
It is whole food based! Not just a supplement
Joe says
Zizi, yes, it is a dietary supplement based on food.
Skye says
She’s saying, unlike supplements, JP has a nutrition label. This means unlike anything with a supplement label, the FDA recognizes it as food!
Joe says
Hi Skye, yes I understand that its a “Nutrition Facts” label vs a “Supplement Facts” label on most supplements. As I understand it, its still a dietary supplement though. My guess is because it lacks the fiber and water that those foods would have in their natural state.
Terri says
I am having cosmetic injections done in 5 days and was told to get off all supplements for bleeding concerns. I hate not to take them for they keep my immune system up and since it is whole foods and not considered to be vitamins if I had to get off of them and if Juice Plus would thin out your blood.
Appreciate any help in this matter asap.
Joe says
Terri, listen to your doctor and stop taking them before your procedure. The good news is JPs own research shows levels of antioxidants stay in your system for at least 30 days after you stop taking it. Your immune system will be fine.
Skye says
Agreed. Because JP is the phytonutrients it goes right to the blood stream when consumed to get to work right away! This isn’t usually what you want when you’re under anasythiea lol. Don’t take JP the day of a procedure, but it’s great to take days before and after a surgery for recovery!
-cheers!
Lourdes says
I had a full knee replacement in September 2017. I doubled up on my juice plus a week before through a week after my surgery. My surgeon and therapist were amazed at how quickly I recovered. My therapist said most knee replacements take 6 weeks of therapy. I only needed 3 weeks. On the last day I was there (still having 3 more weeks of appointments) the therapist told me ” You’re done, you don’t need to be here anymore”.
I believe flooding my body with the extra nutrients helped me heal and recover so quickly. I don’t think a placebo effect can contribute to healing from such a major surgery.
Joe says
Hi Lourdes, thanks for sharing that. I’m so glad you healed up so fast after your surgery 🙂

I now have JuiceFestiv review posted. Sorry to everyone that it took so long. Here is the link: http://supplementclarity.com/juice-festiv-review/

I feel like I could do a commercial for Juice Plus, the gummy form of the vegetable and the fruit. It was by chance that my Cousin had ordered it for herself and for her grandchildren. She had been taking it for awhile now , she feels great ! Her grandkids started taking it, but their parent was not giving it to them and you know how younger people now days, act like they don’t have the time to give out 2 simple things to the kids !!!
Well anyway My Cousin was upset, and has all these orders, getting delivered and she says would you take these ?,since she already has her own order for herself, I know you would be pleased , since you have so many ailments with immune problems and severe pain from osteoarthritis?!! So of course, not to waste her efforts, I took the boxes and started taking them every day !
Without thinking about it, “ALL OF A SUDDEN ONE DAY A WAKE UP WITH OUT PAIN !! I HAVE HAD SEVERE PAIN IN JOINTS , WRISTS , KNEES , FOR OVER 5 YEARS NOW, and I think , oh my god, It has to be that Juice Plus !! I am not on any other meds or vitamins , for about 5 months before taking Juice Plus, so I no it is that, and not something else or coincidence !! My neighbor even notices it on me, because I always looked drained from all the pain, and just tired from it.
So anyone out there, who is maybe lacking something in their system or just something not right with pain in bones or aches from osteoarthritis …..PLEASE GIVE JUICE PLUS A SHOT AT HELPING YOUR BODY !! I HAVE BEEN TAKING, 4, A DAY, MEANING 2 OF THE FRUIT AND 2 VEGGIE FAITHFULLY.
When I noticed something was different and great about my bones, WAS AFTER ABOUT 5 DAYS !!! I am telling you, it is not in my head or wishful thinking… I only took these because my Cousin had them and it was free at the time, and also just thought , “What could hurt by just taking a vitamin or supplement..??!! It works and what do you have to lose ??
Please , I hope You at Juice Plus , never change the ingredients in the gummy form, it is perfect !! I only say this because in the past I have had things ( for other ailments that worked and then the next time I buy it , it is a new improved formula and was not working ) Thank you everyone for listening.

I suffer from Fibromyalgia and started taking JP capsules in January. I have had constant re-flux and heartburn and no increase in energy whatsoever. I am seeing a rheumatologist next week as I have been unable to go to the gym or work out, my weight has increased and my aches and inflammation worsened tenfold. I don’t think these are for everybody, I have a healthy diet and may be intolerant to some of the inclusions in the JP’s.
Joe says
Hi Kylie, ask your rheumatologist her/his thoughts on ribose helping your fibromyalgia. It’s marketed to help people with fibro.
Here is my review of ribose/fibromyalgia research
Katie says
I have been on JP for a month. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, arthritis, GERD, Migraine, chronic sinusitis and IBS (and that’s only naming some of the health issues I battle). Because of these illnesses I have also developed depression from chronic pain and have started having problems with anxiety and panic attacks to boot.
I am completely exhausted mentally and physically from fighting to try to live somewhat of a normal life while battling 24/7 to feel well enough to do so. As I am typing this, I have been battling severe gas, bloating and heartburn ever since I started cooking dinner last night (which seems to be a daily ritual).
I also have daily bouts with intense nausea and I never know when it’s going to hit or what will trigger it. I am on a special anti inflammatory diet which excludes almost everything I enjoy eating and I am seeing no changes so far from taking JP, in fact some symptoms have worsened.
I have signed up for a year. That was the only way I could do it and I was desperate but now I see no way out. Any suggestions?
Joe says
Hi Katie, I truly hope juice plus helps you.
Rebecca A Burns says
Well, actually while it’s not whole food, it’s not exactly considered a supplement, but rather, a whole food product.
Personally, I don’t consider it an extract, since it is literally, whole foods, juiced, dehydrated with low heat to preserve nutrients, then put into capsules. Just like I used to do, when I juiced many different veges, then added a couple of apples for sweetening.
Jay Kordich, the Juiceman, learned the value of the live enzymes from juicing, after being healed from cancer by the Gersons. I juiced for years, & still LOVE drinking the juice when I do this (though I have a Vitamix, which leaves the fiber intact, I prefer juice from the juicer). I don’t juice regularly anymore, as I get those nutrients & enzymes from Juice Plus.
Whatever term it’s given, I’m grateful to God that I was introduced to Juice Plus 25 years ago!!

This comment was NOT a reply to Katie, but to Joe on Sue’s comment, up the line — not sure how it got here!

No worries becky, I saw it. Im glad Juice Plus has been adding quality to your life 🙂

Katie, how is your fibromyalgia doing? Have you ever tried ribose? its a type of sugar. Some people have reported ribose improved their fibromyalgia pain. Here is my review of ribose and fibromyalgia

I also did a podcast on it too: http://supplementclarity.com/podcast/ribose-supplements-treatment-for-fibromyalgia/

Melanie says
I thought Juice plus would help my immune system. I’ve been getting sick every 2 weeks for 4 months. I already ate healthy and exercised but was still getting sick. I started taking juice plus about 3 weeks ago and I am sick again. In my opinion at this stage my body must not be absorbing any nutrients and juice plus for me is a waste of money.
I already see an integrative doctor and taking other specially formulated supplements but they don’t seem to work either. It’s all rather frustrating and I don’t know what to do. How can a healthy person be so unhealthy?
Joe says
Melanie, Im sure you are absorbing nutrients. If you weren’t you’d be in big trouble in many ways besides getting sick. Have you ever had your immune system cells checked when you were not sick (and when you are sick) to see if their levels are in normal ranges? Its possible that 3 weeks might not be enough time to know if its helping or not.
You said you are working out… how long and often are you working out? I ask because exercise can have both a positive and negative effects on the immune system. For example the effects can become negative when we work out hours a day for several weeks. One of the signs of “over training syndrome” is getting sick a lot. While you probably don’t have this, I thought I’d mention it, just in case.
Louise says
Juice Plus is just food so it takes time for it to get in the cells and rebuild them. It actually takes 120 days for all your red blood cells to be renewed and replaced with new cells so don’t give up yet Melanie!
Cheryl says
Melanie, I just saw you comment and wanted to reach out. I have been sick off and on for years and went to multiple doctors for help. Finally saw a doctor that ran additional blood work on me and tested for CVID, Common Variable Immune Disorder. I have it and will start getting infusions soon which will bring my levels back up to normal. I’m so happy that someone finally found what has made me sick for decades.
Hope this helps.
Kat says
I have been taking Juice Plus for about 10 weeks. I am sleeping better without frequent waking during the night and when I do wake I can go right back to sleep. Before JP, I woke up at least 3-4 times per night and would take awhile to get back to sleep. I’ve also lost 14 lbs, 1 dress size and 1 inch in my waist.
This I attribute to the JP making me more conscious of what I’m eating so I’m making healthier food choices. My craving for unhealthy fast junk food and sugary soft drinks has completely gone away! I believe in this product so much that I have become a distributor.
