Vegan Slim Shake Benefits
From the manufacturer, the shakes are supposed to:
-
- curb appetite
- help with weight loss
- control blood sugar levels (good for diabetes)
- provide a good source of protein
Vegan Slim Research
The best way to know if it works is to test it in the laboratory. Unfortunately, no clinical studies for Vegan Slim shakes could be located. This means it's not known if the shakes curb appetite, help people lose weight, or help diabetes problems like high blood sugar levels. However, this does not necessarily mean it does not work. The supplement does contain several ingredients that may indeed help. Let's look at those ingredients next.

Other ingredients: cocoa processed with alkali, natural flavors, potassium citrate, organic stevia, xanthan gum. These play no role in how well the supplement works.
- Percent Daily Value (DV). The percentage of the daily value of what is recommended. When reading Percent Daily Values, remember 5% or less means it's low and 20% or more means it's high.
- N/A = no daily value determined
- mg = milligrams
- mcg = micrograms
What Does All This Mean?
If we look at the vitamins and minerals, here are some takeaways:
1 It's high in vitamins in minerals. The shake provides between 33% and 100% of different vitamins and minerals. Anything over 20% is considered “high.”
2 It's high in sodium. Every 2 scoops of Vegan Slim has 640 mg of sodium which comes to 28% of the total amount recommended per day. Health authorities recommend Americans consume less than 2300 mg of sodium per day. Most Americans consume too much sodium which can raise blood pressure.
3 It's high in fiber. Every 2 scoops of Naturade Vegan Slim shake has 4 grams of fiber which is 21% of the daily value. Anything above 20% is considered high in fiber. So this is a high fiber shake. The shake mix has a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber which can help lower cholesterol and may benefit the microbiome.
4. There is a daily value for added sugars. The supplement facts label incorrectly states there is no daily value for added sugars. The daily value for added sugars is 50 grams per day for adults. Two scoops of Vegan Slim provide 3 grams of added sugars. Granted, that's not much.
5. There's a lot of B12. The Vegan Slim contains 375% of the daily value of vitamin B12. While this may seem excessive, it makes some sense. One of the goals of Vegan Slim is to help people with type II diabetes and prediabetes. Some people with diabetes may be deficient in vitamin B12 because metformin – a popular diabetes medicine – can reduce B12 absorption. Some older folks may be deficient too.
Naturade Vegan Slim Blends
In addition to the vitamins and minerals, Naturade weight-loss shakes also contain 6 proprietary blends. Let's take a look at them:
Vegan Protein Blend (29.4 grams)
Composed of the following:
- Pea protein
- Potatoe protein
- Chlorella protein
- Chia protein
- Quinoa protein
From this blend, we see the protein come from 5 different vegan sources. Since pea protein is listed first, it makes up most of the protein. Oddly, this blend is said to contain 29.4 grams of protein yet the supplement facts label above states the shake has 25 grams of protein in two scoops.
Fiber Blend (6 grams)
Composed of:
- Inulin (from chicory)
- Flaxseed powder
- Bamboo fiber
- Pea fiber
- Apple fruit fiber
- Borage oil
Inulin is listed first so it makes up most of the fiber blend. Inulin (also called chicory root extract) is a soluble fiber. Various studies have shown Inulin can help constipation, lower cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and help people lose weight. Like all fiber, inulin can help us feel full and reduce the desire to eat. In one study, people using 10 grams of inulin fiber for two months lost about 6 pounds. Because inulin is a fiber, it will likely help improve gut health too.
Flaxseeds contain a variety of plant compounds including alpha-linoleic acid. Some research suggests alpha-linoleic may help weight loss. Flax seeds contain fiber which may also help with weight loss. Other research suggests flaxseeds may lower blood pressure too.
Vegan Energy Blend (4 grams)
Composed of:
- Organic cane sugar
- Sunflower oil
- Medium-chain triglycerides
- Organic rice syrup solids
Since cane sugar is listed first, it makes up most of the energy blend. Organic rice syrup is also sugar. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat that the body can break down easily. As such they are more easily transformed into energy and less likely to be stored as fat. Some research suggests medium-chain triglycerides can help with weight loss but more studies are needed.
Weight Loss & Appetite Control blend (4 grams)
Composed of:
- Super Citrimax Garcinia Cambogia extract
- Rhodiola Rosea root extract
- Ashwagandha root extract
Let's take a look at each.
Super Citrimax
Super Citrimax is a patented form of the fruit, Garcinia cambogia. Garcina containers a compound called hydroxy citric acid (HCA) which is thought to be responsible for its weight loss effects. Unlike the natural fruit, Super Citrimax combines Garcinia Cambogia with minerals, calcium, and potassium to increase its absorption. So, does it work? In one study, people given the Super Citrimax supplement (or placebo) along with a 5 day a week exercise program.
After 8 weeks, people taking the Super Citrimax supplement lost about 5.4% of their body weight. In that investigation, the people were given 4600 mg a day in three equal doses. No bad side effects were reported. Many studies involving Garcinia Cambogia and weight loss have been conducted although not all of them show it works.
The Liver Controversy
In some circles, Garcinia Cambogia is a controversial weight loss ingredient due to at least 10 reports alleging the supplement is linked to liver toxicity (elevated liver enzymes and liver failure). While alarming, it's important to know most reports involve supplements that contained many different ingredients. This makes it difficult to pin down which ingredient actually caused the problems.
Another possibility is whether the liver problems were due to impurities that were accidentally added to supplements during manufacture? Further complicating things is the report of a 34-year-old man taking a Garcinia Cambogia supplement who needed a liver transplant. The supplement he used only contained garcinia Cambogia and nothing else. So, is Garcinia Cambogia bad for the liver? This is open to interpretation.
Vegan Smart uses a brand called Super Citrimax. On the plus side, the results of one study noted no liver problems from Super Citrimax garcinia.
Rhodiola
The Rhodiola herb is not traditionally used for weight loss. Rather, it's used to reduce fatigue and depression. The idea is if you feel less fatigued and less depressed, you might do more physical activity and burn more calories. Long term, this may help you lose weight. In one study, Rhodiola reduced anxiety levels in college students prior to taking exams. In another study, Rhodiola was effective at helping people dealing with feelings of burnout.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is an herbal ingredient used often for its adaptogenic anti-stress properties. While not a traditional weight loss herb, the results of one study noted ashwagandha was effective at preventing people from gaining weight when they were under stress.
People with hypothyroidism usually gain weight because they make less thyroid hormone, which helps regulate metabolism. Some research suggests ashwagandha may improve thyroid hormone production. If this occurs, you might burn more calories – even at rest – which may help weight loss. Here's a video on ashwagandha and hypothyroidism.

Digestive Enzyme Blend (300 mg)
Composed of:
- Bromelain
- Protease
- Amylase
- Lipase
This is a combination of enzymes that break down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Healthy humans make enzymes that do this too. For those with digestion problems, the enzymes may offer some additional help.
Blood Glucose Balance Blend (210 mg)
Composed of:
- Gymnema Sylvestre extract
- Banaba extract
- Cinnamon extract
- ChromateMate (Chromium Polynicotinate)
Each of these ingredients has been studied to reduce blood sugar levels and help diabetes.
Gymnema Sylvestre
Gymnema Sylvestre has been shown to lower blood sugar and maybe help weight loss. In one study 600 mg of Gymnema caused people to lose more weight than placebo after 4 months of daily use. This study used the Swanson brand of Gymnema.
In another study, the combination of 100 mg Gymnema Sylvestre, 2800 mg hydroxy citric acid (Garcinia Cambogia), and 400 mcg of niacin-bound chromium in addition to a daily exercise program were shown to work better for weight loss than garcinia Cambogia and exercise. Vegan slim shakes contain all of these ingredients.
Cimmamon
Cinnamon has a long history of helping lower blood sugar levels. Various studies have documented that cinnamon can:
-
- lower blood sugar levels
- reduce cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels
- lower triglycerides
One investigation has also demonstrated cinnamon can reduce hemoglobin A1c levels too. In that study, people with type II diabetes were given 1000 mg of cinnamon daily for 3 months. Results showed cinnamon reduced A1c levels by 1%, which is a meaningful amount. The study used the Puritans Pride brand.
Chromium Polynicotinate (ChromateMate)
This is a popular form of the mineral, chromium that is said to be better absorbed than chromium by itself. ChromateMate is the version used in Vegan Slim shakes. ChromeMate is chromium combined with the vitamin, niacin. Several studies have documented chromiums ability to:
- lower blood sugar levels
- reduce hemoglobin A1c levels
- improve insulin sensitivity
- lower cholesterol levels
All of these can benefit people with type II diabetes and prediabetes (metabolic syndrome). Studies have used at least 200 mcg a day to achieve these effects. One problem with the studies is they don't contain many people. This makes it difficult to know how well chromium works. While chromium supplements are sometimes used to help with weight loss, several studies show it is largely ineffective.
Who Makes Vegan Slim Shakes?
The company is called Naturade and it's a company that has been in business since 1926! That's much longer than most supplement companies on Earth. Another name for the company is Prevention, LLC. Naturade produces a variety of supplements ranging from cold and flu products, meal replacement bars, and gut health supplements to name a few. Natureade is also the company that owns the Ageless Foundations and Symbiotics brands.
In 2012 Naturade was purchased by Kareem Cook and Claude Tellis, businessmen who previously founded Healthy Body Products, a healthy vending machine company aimed at providing better food choices for public school students. A central focus of Naturaade since being acquired is to create products that address the growing problem of diabetes and prediabetes. Very laudable. NBA legends Magic Johnson and Grant Hill, have since become investors in Naturade.
Natureade is located at 17875 Von Karman Ave Ste 150 Irvine, CA 92614-6212. To contact Naturade, call (800) 421-1830. The website is Naturade.com.
Buy Vegan Slim Shakes
You can purchase it almost everywhere. Vegan Slim can be purchased at Costco as well as Walmart, Target, CVS, Sam’s Club, Meijer, Harris Teeter, and Publix to name a few.
Vegan Slim Shake Cost
Prices can vary so shop around. On the Naturade.com website, a bag costs $39.99. A bag has 14 servings and a serving is 2 scoops. So, if you use the recommended 2 scoops a day, a bag will last you about 2 weeks. At 2 scopes per day, your monthly cost will be $80. If you belong to Costco, a bag costs $32.99. Tip. if you use 1 scoop, a bag will last you almost a month.
The shake may also be found on Amazon too.
Different Name At Costco
If you shop for Vegan Slim at Costco, be aware they call it by a different name. At Costco, it is called “NATURADE Plant-Based Weight Loss High Protein Shake.” Why is it called a different name? Costco thought Naturade Plant-Based Weight Loss High Protein Shake was a better name. its Regardless of what you all it, it's the same thing. All of the ingredients in the Costco weight-loss shake are the same as Vegan Slim.
What Flavors Are Available?
Vegan Slim comes in both vanilla and chocolate fudge.
Vegan Slim vs. Vegan Smart Shakes
Vegan Smart Shakes is another brand made by Naturade. Even though their names sound similar they are not the same. The amounts of vitamins and minerals in Vegan Smart shakes are different and it has a tad fewer calories. Vegan Smart also contains a blend of fruits and vegetables. Vegan Smart shakes do not contain garcinia Cambogia or chromium polynicotinate (ChromateMate).
Vegan Slim Shake Side Effects
For most people, side effects will probably be rare. Mostly, the Vegan Slim shake is vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. Here are some things to consider if taking this supplement. This list is not complete so check with your doctor if you have any health problems.
- Start with less than recommended for the first week
- Ask your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding
- Stop taking Vegan Slim at least 2 weeks before surgery
- If you take any medications, ask your doctor
- Stop taking a couple of days before blood tests. Biotin may reduce TSH levels and interfere with hypothyroidism treatment.
- Some of the ingredients can lower blood sugar levels. For people with diabetes who take medicine, the combination of the shake + your medications may make your blood sugar go too low.
- Several reports have linked garcinia cambogia to elevated liver enzymes and liver failure. To be fair, the number of reports is low compared to all the people who have used garcinia over the years. This topic needs more research to better understand what is happening. Speak to your doctor if this is a concern to you.
Vegan Slim FAQ
How Do You Use It?
Mix 2 scoops into 9 to 11 oz of cold water, juice, or non-dairy beverage twice a day. You can add it to your smoothies recipe too. The company also states that the best results are seen when Vegan Slim is combined with exercise and watching what you eat.
What's its Glycemic Index?
The glycemic index is 28 so this is a low glycemic index supplement. Eating low glycemic index foods can help you control your blood sugar and diabetes.
Does It Have Omega 3 fatty acids?
The label indicates the supplement has 200 mg of omega 3 fats. Because this is a vegan supplement, the omega 3 fats does not come from fish oils (EPA & DHA) but rather alpha linolic acid (ALA). Some ALA can be converted into fish oils in the body. ALA can also benefit the brain, nervous system, and blood pressure. Some studies show alpha linolic acid can assist with weight loss too.
Does Vegan Slim Contain Lead?
The package states the product can expose you to lead. California has a very strict lead policy called proposition 65 (Prop 65) also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Any supplement or food sold in California must mention Prop 65 if it provides at least 0.5 micrograms per day of lead even if it is from natural sources. I reached out to the Naturade company about this and they tell me the lead is naturally occurring in the environment.
Any Artificial Flavors?
There are no artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, or preservatives. The supplement has no MSG or Acesulfame K. Likewise, Vegan Slim is also gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free, yeast-free, and contains no nuts. That said, those with allergies should understand the supplement is produced in a facility that also processes milk, soy, wheat, and eggs.
In addition, the pouch/bag that contains the powered shake mix is environmentally friendly and does not contain BPA. This is good because BPA is known to disrupt hormones.
Returning Vegan Slim Shakes
Returns are pretty straightforward. If you purchased it from a retail store (Costco, Walmart, etc.) return it there for a full refund. If you purchased it from the company, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all unopened items. It's recommended you call Naturade first at 800-367-2880 so they can give you specific instructions. Return the unopened products with a copy of your receipt to this address:
Prevention, LLC
17875 Von Karman Ave.

Irvine, CA 92614
Where Is It Made?
The supplement is made in America using both US and foreign ingredients.
What Do I Suggest?
If your using Vegan Slim shakes to help blood sugar levels, remember that for best results, you need to also lose weight and do some exercise. Even losing a few pounds and walking can make a big impact on helping – and may reversing – type II diabetes and prediabetes. If you want to try a supplement but feel Vegan Slim shakes are too expensive for your budget, here are some things that may help:
- Cinnamon
- Inulin fiber
- Psyllium fiber
- Eating more fruits and vegetables, which are naturally high in fiber.
You could mix the inulin in your coffee or add psyllium fiber to a smoothie. Adding fiber to your diet will help your blood sugar levels and curb your appetite too.

Do Vegan Slim Shakes Work?
While the supplement lacks clinical studies, several ingredients are known to lower blood sugar levels. Based on this, it's possible it may help some people with pre-diabetes and type II diabetes. The shake mix also has some fiber which can help curb appetite. If you use Vegan Slim shakes in place of 1 or 2 meals a day, it's possible you may lose some weight. Also encouraging are online testimonials of people saying they have lost weight. Weight loss can also improve blood sugar levels and help diabetes. If you are just looking to lose some weight, then the shakes may help if you use them in place of higher-calorie meals.
