My Biotin Pro Clinical Ingredients

The Supplement Facts Label tells us that My Biotin is a clean supplement containing only three ingredients.

Amount Percent Daily Value
Biotin (from magnesium Biotinate 10,000 mcg 33333%
MB40X (composed of Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate & magnesium biotinate) 160 mg N/A
Astaxanthin (AstaReal) 4 mg NA

Notice both biotin and the MB40X ingredient contain magnesium biotinate. This common trait tells us magnesium biotinate is essential to My Biotin Pro Clinical. It's actually called “super biotin” in the TV commercial. Magnesium biotinate is a chelated form of the vitamin and is composed of 93% biotin. This form of biotin is also patented. The magnesium biotinate patent number is WO2018045244A1.

Other Ingredients

Vegetable cellulose (for the capsule), rice flour, vegetable magnesium stearate. These ingredients don't play an active role in the hair and wrinkle effects of the supplement.

My Biotin vs. My Biotin Pro Clinical

There are two versions of this supplement. Here is how they compare to each other:

My Biotin (1 capsule) My Biotin ProClinical 1 capsule)
Biotin 10,000 mcg 10,000 mcg
MB40X 160 mcg 160 mg
Astaxanthin (AstaReal) 4 mg

As you can see, both supplements are almost identical to each other. The only difference is My Biotin ProClinical contains 4 mg of astaxanthin. While astaxanthin has benefits, if you are having trouble deciding which to purchase, go with the regular My Biotin supplement if it's less expensive. My Biotin ProClinical is part of Purity Product's “My Line” of supplements, including My Vitamin C and My Keratin.

What is MB40X – And Its Real Name?

My Biotin Pro Clinical 30 capsules

MB40X is an invented abbreviation probably created for marketing purposes. MB40X  refers to the combination of magnesium biotinate and inositol arginine silicate.  Purity Products states this combination is 40 times (40X) more soluble than regular biotin (sometimes called D-biotin, vitamin B7, or vitamin H). The important thing to know is that the actual name of MB40X is Lustriva. This is the compound listed in the MyBiotin Certificate of Analysis and what was tested in the Clinical study summarized below.

Lustriva is a supplement ingredient from a company called Nutrition 21 (Nutrition21.com). Nutrition21 develops and supplies nutritional components to other companies – such as Purity Products.  Nutrition21 also makes an extra effort by sponsoring many clinical research studies you will read about below. Nutrition 21 was a subsidiary of JDS Therapeutics, which sold it to another company called Everwell Health Holdings (also called Everwell Health or Everwell) in 2021.

Other supplements that contain the Lustriva ingredient include:

40X more Bio Soluble? What Does That Mean?

If you saw the MyBiotin TV commercial, you heard – over and over again – that the supplement is “40X more bio soluble” than regular biotin. Even some clinical studies mention this statistic. The word soluble means the ability to be dissolved. Bio-soluble refers to the capacity of a substance to be dissolved in a biological system – like you. The impression this gives is that bio-soluble means better absorbed by the body.

Some research suggests magnesium biotinate – the form of biotin used in MyBiotin – is better absorbed. But does that mean it works better than regular biotin seen in other supplements?

My Biotin Pro Clinical Ingredients Research

Here's a summary of the clinical investigations on the ingredients in MB40X (also called, Lustriva). MB40X is a combination of

  1. Magnesium biotinate
  2. Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate

Most of the research on these substances was conducted at Firat University in Elazig, Turkey, and supported by grants from JDS Therapeutics / Nutrition 21.

Study 1

Source: PurityProducts.com

In this investigation, the ingredients in MyBiotin (magnesium biotinate and arginine silicate inositol complex) appeared to improve hair density in rats better than rats receiving no treatment.

Study 2

Researchers conducted this study showing that My Biotin's ingredients protect the skin of rats from UV radiation damage and improve the elasticity and appearance of rat skin in addition to reducing skin inflammation.

Study 3

A topical ointment using the arginine silicate inositol complex was shown to speed up the healing of skin wounds in rats.

Study 4

This interesting study sought to determine magnesium biotinate's impact on social behavior problems. Researchers noted that magnesium biotinate improved learning and behavior in rats. In addition, the magnesium-biotin combo reduced inflammation. It also increased the size and number of Purkinje fibers in the cerebellum area of the brain. Serotonin and dopamine, and antioxidant enzymes like glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase were also increased.

Study 5

In this analysis, researchers revealed that magnesium biotinate was more effective than regular biotin at reducing blood lipid levels in rats.

What Is Inositol Stabilized Arginine Silicate?

As the name suggests, this is a combination of the amino acid arginine, the mineral silicon, and inositol, a type of sugar. It is a fundamental component of the MB40X compound. Arginine is well-known in the exercise world for its cardiovascular benefits. Silicon is also necessary for hair, skin, nails, and bone health, and some research suggests silicon may also increase the absorption of arginine.

Inositol stabilizes or preserves the arginine-silicate combo to make it more effective. In other supplements, the inositol-stabilized arginine silicate complex may also be called Nitrosigine. Think of Nitrosigine as like MB40X but without the biotin. Like  MB40X, this combination of nutrients also has its share of clinical research. Financial grants from Nutrition 21/ JDS Therapeutics have supported much of this evidence.

Study 1

In this investigation, 1500 mg was given to healthy men (aged 18-35 years) for between 3 and 14 days. Results showed that the arginine silicate inositol complex increased the speed the men could perform complex mental tasks. Keep in mind that the dosage used in this study was much more than found in My Biotin, which has 160 mg.

Study 2

In this experiment, 26 video gamers in their early 20s were given 1600 mg of the inositol, arginine, and silicon complex. They then played their favorite video game for one hour. Compared to those who took a placebo, those taking the supplement showed some improvements in short-term memory, concentration, reasoning, and reaction time.

What Does My Biotin Astaxanthin Do?

Astaxanthin appears to be used to help with the anti-wrinkle effects of MyBiotin. Astaxanthin is a type of carotenoid phytonutrient. Unlike other carotenoids, astaxanthin does not raise vitamin A levels. Despite this, astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant being 40X as potent as beta-carotene. As a natural red pigment produced by bacteria and algae, astaxanthin provides color to foods like lobster, salmon, and Atlantic trout. Its most popular sources are krill and krill oil.

In the MyBiotin TV commercial, Dr. Baum states that astaxanthin allows you to “drench your skin from the inside out” and that it provides “70 times” greater skin hydration than a placebo. Dr. Baum explains that astaxanthin helps the body hold on to hyaluronic acid (HA). This substance helps the skin retain moisture.

Preliminary research appears to show astaxanthin reduces DNA damage to the skin. Inhibiting DNA damage would be expected to help skin stay healthy looking. In one study, women taking 6-12 mg of astaxanthin showed reduced inflammation. However, there were no changes to skin moisture or wrinkles. Wrinkles and hydration did not get worse, either.

A review of previous studies concluded that oral and topical astaxanthin might be effective at helping skin aging. However, the researchers also cautioned more research was needed.  One possible alarming astaxanthin side effect is that the substance may change your urine color to red or orange. This outcome is harmless, however.

The astaxanthin used in the My Biotin formula is called “AstaReal.” AstaReal Inc, a subsidiary of Fuji Chemical Industries CO. in Japan, bills itself as “the worlds leading producer and innovator of natural astaxanthin.” The company extracts its sustainable astaxanthin from non-GMO freshwater green microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis).

My Biotin Pro Clinical Clinical Research

As proof of its effectiveness, The Purity Products website mentions research showing that the active ingredients in MyBiotin increase hair thickness by 20% after three months of use. They say the active ingredients also reduced facial wrinkles more than the placebo after 3 months too. While there is indeed a clinical study, the researchers did not test MyBiotin Pro Clinical. Rather they examined the substance called Lustriva, which Purity Products calls MB40X. Lustriva and MB40X are the same thing but are simply referred to by different names. Purity Products calls it MB40X.

Here is a summary of the study, which is titled a randomized, double-blind evaluation of a novel biotin and silicon ingredient complex on the hair and skin of healthy women. The investigation was supported by JDS Therapeutics/Nutrition 21, the company that makes the Lustriva compound.

The women were split up into three groups:

  1. Placebo group
  2. Low dose MB40X (Lustriva) group
  3. High dose MB40X (Lustriva) group

How much did they take?

Results:

  1. Both low-dose and high-dose Lustriva (MB40X) showed a significant reduction in facial wrinkles after 3 weeks. However, by the end of the study, only the high-dose group showed a significant decrease in wrinkle depth.
  2. The high-dose group showed significant improvements in skin texture (less roughness) after 3 weeks
  3. The high-dose Lustriva group (high dose MB40X) showed significant improvements in terminal hair and vellus and terminal hair percentages
  4. Neither supplement dosage appeared to have improved nail growth or strength
  5. Those taking the placebo saw no improvements in any parameter measured

Study problems

  1. The supplement combo was tested against a placebo only. How does MB40X compare to regular biotin?
  2. This investigation tested the ingredients in My Biotin – not My Biotin Pro Clinical (which also contains astaxanthin). This is an important consideration if you are unsure which version to purchase.

The supplement is vegan and organic.

Is it Kosher?

The company reports that MyBiotin is not Kosher certified.

What about Halal certification?

Will it return hair to its natural color?

This is a hair growth and wrinkle supplement, not a gray hair restoration supplement. There's no proof biotin or “super biotin” rejuvenates hair to its natural color.

Is it independently tested?

While the FDA does not routinely test dietary supplements, Purity Products indicates MyBiotin is NSF certified. NSF is a respected independent 3rd party company that tests nutritional supplements, ensuring they do not contain contaminants or ingredients not listed on the supplement facts label. In addition, you can download and read the Certificate of Analysis for My Biotin at the Purity Products website.

How does it work?

The mechanism is unclear; however, it's speculated that arginine improves blood flow to the skin and hair because of its ability to raise nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator. As such, it's able to relax muscles in the blood vessels and allow for greater blood flow. This may provide more significant amounts of oxygen and nutrients to hair and skin. In addition, hair contains protein, and magnesium is a mineral that aids with protein synthesis. It's noteworthy that many Americans do not consume adequate amounts of magnesium.

Overall, this looks like a vitamin C supplement with added ingredients. Unfortunately, this reporter is unaware if it works better than other vitamin C supplements.

Calling Purity Products Customer Service

The customer service people are helpful and polite. They even called me back when they thought a previous call was disconnected – though I did not share my phone number with the company when I called. One customer service rep who this reporter spoke with asked many questions and offered supplement solutions without me initiating an interest. The rep offered discounts and even provided his phone extension in case I was interested in purchasing supplements in the future. It was all very polite, but I got the impression he wanted to make a sale. To be fair, other customer service reps I spoke with were not like this. On two different occasions, the representatives answered my questions and did not inquire or make supplement suggestions.

My Biotin Pro Clinical Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

This supplement is likely safe for most people. A toxicological study using rats found no harmful effects even when extremely high doses (39 grams of biotin for a 154 lb human) were used for three months. A toxicity study using the inositol arginine silicate complex showed no problems when men took 500 mg for two weeks. Similarly, the human trial involving 89 women who took the key ingredients in My Biotin for 3 months did not experience side effects either. While this is encouraging, there are some necessary things to know before taking this or any biotin supplement.

My Biotin Pro Clinical vs. Nutrafol & Viviscal

Nutrafol for Women Supplement Facts label

The ingredients in the popular Nutrafol hair growth supplement differ from the Purity Products supplement. However, one similarity is that both contain biotin Four capsules of Nutrafol provide 3,000 mcg of vitamin B7. This is a lot less than My Biotin, which has 10,000 mcg.

Unlike Nutrafol, My Biotin does not contain saw palmetto, which some research indicates has hair growth-promoting effects.  On the downside, some women feel saw palmetto is controversial, which may be why Purity Products did not include it in their formula. Another difference is the Nutrafol company makes no claims about improving fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Click here to see Nutrafol's before & after pictures.

Viviscal is another top-rated hair growth supplement. The company making this supplement makes no claims about reducing facial wrinkles. Viviscal has only 120 mcg of biotin, which is far less than either My Biotin or Nutrafol. That said, there are at least 5 clinical investigations indicating the effectiveness of Viviscal. This is more proof than its competitors. Ironically, even the Purity Products website references a study conducted on Viviscal! Another difference is that Viviscal costs less, which puts a smaller dent in your wallet.

The Verdict: Does My Biotin Really Work?

The My Biotin supplement has at least one clinical investigation, which appears to show the ingredients in the supplement -what Purity Products calls MB40X – work as advertised. While the study seems to be well done, the results need to be verified by other researchers. That's how science works. Unfortunately, the researchers did not compare the MB40X compound to regular biotin to see if it was better. Despite what you saw in the TV commercial, the clinical study used the ingredients found in the regular MyBiotin supplement – not the Pro Clinical version. Consider this when making your purchase.
