Can Niacin Raise NAD+ Levels?

NIACIN VITAMIN B3 REVIEW

NIACIN REVIEW VITAMIN B3

Niacin (vitamin B3) has been a popular anti-aging supplement for years. The idea is is that it raises our production of NAD, a molecule we need to make energy. Most of the research on this involves a type of niacin called nicotinamide riboside. I've been skeptical of nicotinamide riboside because it's expensive and because I've yet to see any studies comparing it to regular niacin. In this video review, I'll present proof niacin raises NAD levels. Episode 48 of Joe Cannon Health Podcast. Subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts.

Who Did The Study

The study was conducted by people with knowledge of NAD metabolism. One of the researchers has filed a patent that allows NAD to be analyzed from the blood. Another researcher is the chief science advisor for Chromaxdx, the maker of nicotinamide riboside.

Niacin vs. Nicotinamide Riboside

So how does niacin compare to nicotinamide riboside – the key ingredient in supplements like Tru Niagan and Elysium Basis? Which is better at raising NAD levels? There are no studies comparing these two forms of niacin against each other. Why? This would be a no brainer study to do.

No doubt nicotinamide riboside has its share of research. But so too does niacin.  One big difference between these two supplements is the price you pay: I've seen niacin costing less than $10. On the other hand, nicotinamide riboside can cost almost $50 – per month!

So Does It Work?

This study, while not perfect, adds to the proof showing that Niacin will raise NAD levels. While it's interesting that it seemed to work best in people who were not healthy, let's remember this was a small study. It needs to be followed up by a larger investigation.
