The original paper, published in 2011, showed that yerba mate, given to mice for three weeks, reduced food intake and body weight and raised GLP-1 levels. This is good; however, benefits seen in mice do not necessarily mean yerba mate raises GLP-1 levels in humans.

How Much Yerba Mate Might Raise GLP-1 In Humans?

The initial mouse study demonstrating the improvement in GLP-1 with yerba mate utilized dosages ranging from 50 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg, adjusted according to the animal's weight. The investigation revealed that consumption of yerba mate tea resulted in notably reduced levels of blood sugar, insulin, and glucagon compared to periods when participants abstained from the tea.

However, the study also observed a decrease in GLP-1 levels associated with yerba mate consumption. In essence, if yerba mate acted as a natural GLP-1 agonist, one would anticipate an increase in hormone levels rather than a decrease.

Does Yerba Mate Tea Have Side Effects?
